Of evidence given so far, Phil says: “I think that, scientifically, the company seems to have left major questions unanswered.”

He says TTR’s request to engage in two years of fieldwork after consent is given, and before mining begins, is a backwards way of doing things.

“You have to do the groundwork before consent.

“They are expecting us to rely on the small amount of fieldwork they have done, and mostly computer modelling, where as Kasm experts, fishermen, divers, iwi, all presented actual evidence.”

Phil says one marine mammal expert gave evidence of what she believes to be a Taranaki-based population of blue whales living in the area that TTR proposes should be mined.

The presence of blue whales were monitored at five sites using microphones and “almost every day blue whale calls were picked up”, says Phil. During a nineday survey, 68 blue whales were spotted in 32 sightings.

“The sound from the activity would be a like a constant drone, persisting for days, weeks and sometimes months on end.”

Phil says the stress of the noise and the sediment created from mining would affect feeding, mating and the rearing of young.

Another expert presented evidence that little blue penguins were travelling 150km from the Marlborough Sounds to feed in the proposed mining area.

“The conclusion I am coming to is that the … area performs a unique function in the greater environment. There are a lot of fish there, penguins there, so lets go wreck it!

“The bottom line: My view is I don’t know how the decision-making committee can give them permission.”

Phil says he felt that the EPA was squeezing its schedule too tightly “purely for convenience and to the save the company some money”, and the decisionmaking committee wasn’t engaging as http://www.weathermap.co.nz/?p=ragla fully with the submitters as it should.

avier Fournier knows first-hand the perils of mountaineering.

The Swiss mountain guide, who is living in Raglan for a year with his family and commutes to Wanaka for his work with Aspiring Guides, was the “tramper” who recently found the remains of a body on Fox Glacier.

Two weeks ago today, Xavier was working with four clients – “doing some ice climbing work” – between Pioneer Hut and Chancellor Hut when he “saw some weird stuff on the glacier”.

He says what turned out to be bones, pieces of skin and clothing were in the middle of a serac, which is a massive block or column of glacier ice and dangerous because they may topple with little warning.

“I had to set up a fixed rope because it wasn’t easy to access … to make it safe for me to go over there,” says Xavier, who has been mountain-guiding fulltime for more than 15 years and doing search and rescue work for 10 years.

News stories about his find stated that it was thought the “body” may have been in the ice for 30 years or longer, preserved, but Xavier says there was “no body”, just a few scattered bones – “the kea can make a big mess” – and the clothes he found did not look to be very old.

Xavier called the Department of Conservation on his satellite phone and they contacted the police, but the weather was turning so he flew out later that day after photographing his find and telling search and rescue of the location.

The remains were finally recovered on Monday last week and flown to Christchurch for an autopsy and formal identification.

Xavier’s wife, Sandrine, says it will be nice for the remains to be returned to the family, and off the glacier.

The couple knows what it is like.

They’ve had friends and known guides who have died in the mountains.

A colleague of Xavier’s was killed in an avalanche while working with a client in Mt Blanc, France, and his body was never recovered from a crevasse.

“We know where he is,” says Xavier.

“There are a lot of people like that in the mountains.

“If the rescue operation is dangerous and you know someone could not have survived then it doesn’t make sense to take the risk to remove the body.”

He says in the mountains, it can go very quickly from “dream to nightmare”.

One of his search and rescue jobs back at home involved a group of friends caught in an avalanche just before a wedding.

Everyone survived but the groom, whose body was dug out of the snow two days later – his avalanche transceiver had failed.

Another time he was climbing the Weisshorn, a major peak in Switzerland, with a client when they met two other climbers.

“They were happy after summiting, nice guys, good skills”. The weather was great!

Then, right in front of Xavier and his client, one of the men fell down an easy climb and in less than a second had pulled his companion with him.

“They fell down a 400m cliff of rock and ice and died certainly after the first hit.

“My client was pretty shocked. That was a hard time for both of us,” says Xavier, who organised the recovery of the bodies.

“Too many funerals and not enough weddings,” says Sandrine, who is a teacher

back home in Valais, where the mountains are in Switzerland.

Xavier, who has also been involved in search and rescue operations with happy endings, chuckles. You get the impression that this is a well-discussed topic. “Sandrine doesn’t like it when I work winters because she scared of the risks of avalanches,” Xavier says.

The risk of avalanche is very difficult to assess, and “you never know 100 per cent how close from an accident you are until you are caught in a snow slab”.

Also, on the mountains, like on the sea, weather is always an issue.

“If you are in trouble and you have crappy weather, everything is very complicated: the cold, hypothermia, no helicopter for transportation. In New Zealand, the weather is changing very quickly and when the weather is bad it’s often very bad. In Europe, or other places in the world like the Rockies, Nepal, the weather is more continental with less moisture and less wind.

“I’m always having a lot of respect with the Kiwi weather and I try to avoid to climb when the conditions are bad. It’s pretty common to get stuck in a mountain hut because the weather is bad … sometimes even getting to the toilet is a big deal!”

For his part, the father of two – Lily, 9, and Zian, 13, attend Raglan Area School – is always trying to minimise any risk, and not just to placate his wife.

“I really like the risk management part of the job. The older I get, the more margin I take to stay safe. I love my job. Climbing and spending time in the mountain is my passion so I would like to do it as long as possible without accidents … but it’s such a nice lifestyle that it makes sense to accept some risks – everybody will die once.”

However, for now he is working the summer season in New Zealand so the risk of an avalanche is low –and living in Raglan is “great fun because I can enjoy the sea and the mountains down south”.

Taylor Hutchison and Indica Ratima cleaned up their respective under 20 divisions and Brie Bennett the under 14 girls’ division at the final event of the Billabong Grom Series, held in strong onshore winds at Mount Maunganui last weekend.

New Zealand representative Hutchison’s outpointing of Northland surfer Manu Scott-Arrieta in his final and Bennett’s edging out of Taranaki’s Ariana Shewry in hers earned the Raglan pair overall series titles.

Ratima’s win, meanwhile, was her first at national level. The goofy foot, who had shown glimpses of form over the past few years, put it all together to hold the lead over her biggest rival – Piha’s Claudia Fraser – throughout the 20-minute final.

The previous weekend, Raglan surfers came away with no fewer than four wins at the Rip Curl GromSearch held at New Plymouth’s Fitzroy Beach.

Caleb Cutmore took out the under 17 boys’ final in the dying seconds.

His 7.23 point ride saw him leapfrog Ohope’s Jared Gebet – who’d led the final from the outset – and in the process earn a mystery trip to the international GromSearch final.

Two of Raglan’s other wins came in the under 14 divisions. Kora Cooper cruised to a comprehensive victory in the boys’ section after posting a perfect 10-point ride on the first day, while a last-minute interference by Shewry gifted Bennet, who was only just behind her, a win in the girls’ section.

The under 12 boys’ division saw Raglan’s Navryn Malone dominate the final to take his first national win over the other form surfer from day one, Taranaki’s Ryder Pennington.

DOC has invited members of Raglan’s scientific community and national experts to share the current state of knowledge at the Social Club tomorrow at 6pm.

“We will take a look at the environment we share with Maui dolphins from land to harbour to sea,” says DOC ranger Danielle Hart.

That includes a talk by Dr Wendi Roe from Massey University, who will be discussing her research into how cat poo could be affecting these dolphins.

“There is still a lot we don’t know about Maui dolphins and together with many stakeholders we conduct a wide range of work to increase our knowledge about Maui dolphin ecology, conservation status, life history, and threats,” says Danielle.

“Join us at the Raglan Social Club at 6pm tomorrow to dive deeper into the issues and explore areas for positive action together.”

With fewer than 100 left in the wild, Maui dolphins are a New Zealand treasure and need help to survive.

Danielle says DOC is proud to support Maui Dolphin Day and a Raglan community that cares – it will be there this Saturday at Te Kopua Domain, sharing its work and sharing in the fun.

New business offers natural nutrition for your pets

wo Raglan locals and good mates have started a natural pet food company right under our nose. Dave Smith and Frank Bellerby launched ‘Good Noze’ this week and we caught up with them to check it out.

Where did the idea to start a pet food line come from?

Born partly out of frustration really.

Being an owner of some fussy pets and a pantry full of partially eaten pet food I realised that there was potential to come up with a new product to remove the stress and waste from daily feeds.

Turns out, they weren’t fussy at all - I was just feeding them the wrong stuff.

So you were trying to solve a problem?

Pretty much. But I couldn’t solve it on my own because I knew nothing at that stage about animal nutrition. Frank, an animal nutritionist, was already in the animal feeds business and he was up for

the challenge and liked the direction for his own business.

We felt there was a gap in the market for a 100% natural and easy to handle product.

Plus we convinced ourselves that it was possible to make pet food more attractive with the right product, packaging and marketing - kind of like how Eco Store transformed the way people looked at cleaning products.

What was the goal in terms of the type of product you produced?

The aim was to produce a sure thing!

A natural product that no dog or cat could resist, but more importantly, one they should and would consistently eat.

Once we discovered the freezedrying process and understood it, we had our solution and were sold.

The product is nothing but real meat that has been freeze dried, so the nutrients and taste remain, just the

water is removed and with it the smell, refrigeration and handling issues.

How long has it taken you to develop the product?

From the genesis of an idea it’s taken us just over two years to craft, refine and test the product to the point where we know its totally pukka for pets.

Your packaging is really cool, especially for pet food. How did you come up with the idea?

We decided to ask our dear friend and artist Hayley Hamilton to create some characters that we could use. Hayley went totally above and beyond the brief. She provided a series of sketched images to choose from, then fleshed out characters, before finally delivering hand painted works of art.

I recognise a few Raglan locations and locals on the website. Who did your website?

Actually Maki from Raglan Ink designed our website... she’s awesome to work with.

We wanted to showcase Raglan with all it's beauty and character. Turns out Raglan was the perfect backdrop when trying to capture people and their pets hanging out together. Local Leanne Roughton, the photographer, was fantastic to work with in terms of interpreting our vision and nailing the shoots quickly. Huge thanks to Karamea of Raglan Ink, Ray at Raglan Barber, Steve and Candide of Raglan Kayak, Rach from The Social Club and Sarah at Rockit for helping us out.

We have more photo shoots planned so the website is a work in progress.

What are the benefits of the product?

I

n recent years, we have seen a growing awareness of the importance of good nutrition. Eating a diet based on locally sourced, organic and fresh produce supports the health of the whole family, from children to our elders.

To maintain good health it is recommended that adults eat a minimum of five to six serves of vegetables and two serves of fruit every day. However, very few children or adults meet these

recommendations, compromising nutritional intake and running the risk of nutritional deficiencies.
