Dear Editor, Palestine Human Rights Campaign Waikato (PHRCW) would like to thank local businesses and the community for the support given to our December charity dinner for medical aid to Palestinian children.

Over $2000 was raised for PCRF (Palestine Children’s Relief Fund) to continue the work led by renowned New Zealand paediatric cardiac surgeon Dr Alan Kerr.

PHRCW also wishes to thank the speaker-panel who shared their eyewitness accounts of the life endured by Palestinian families under Israeli military occupation. Dr Kerr spoke of the devastation in Gaza Palestine which forced PCRF to move its hospital to West Bank, Palestine. Dr Asad Khan emphasised the effects of the strangle-hold of 600 ‘checkpoints’ and roadblocks set up by the Israeli military.

(Consequently, what should

be a 10-minute ambulance trip becomes a two-hour ordeal for Palestinians.)

Sister Barbara Cameron’s testimony was particularly prescient, considering the recent NZ sponsored UN Resolution condemning Israeli settlements on Palestinian land. Sr. Barbara stayed with a family in the Palestine village of Huwara.

She related the fear and terror experienced when, on her first night, a mob of Jewish settlers rampaged through the village attacking homes and breaking windows with the intention of torching the local school and place of worship.

Dear Editor Thank you for putting on your front cover the ‘One issue - the future of Aotearaoa’ slogan at the New Year’s Eve Parade. Thank you, too, to the supportive crowd and also to Lions for organising the enjoyable event and awarding a Special Prize. However, they publicised it as awarded to ‘Aotearoa’. That wasn’t its name, nor was it my entry.

The entry was by the ‘Raglan Greens’ and the float a joint effort by several Green Party members. The slogan, as on your cover, was based on an old Green Party poster which read, “The Greens - a single issue party - the future

of Aotearoa New Zealand”.

On the other side, this was how ‘The solution is Green’ slogan looked.

There are often two sides to a story; less often to a photo!

Stairmand breaks record with 6th national surfing title

Billy Stairmand broke a 30 year record by claiming his sixth title in the Open Men’s Division. He dedicated the win to his mum who passed away late last year.

aglan surfer Billy Stairmand has had a swell start to the year, breaking records by winning his sixth national open men’s surfing title.

The 27-year-old, who helped Raglan Point Boardriders take out the interclub title with his win, says he’s overwhelmed by his success at the 2017 National Surfing Championships in Piha on Saturday, and it was a good start to the year following the death of his mother.

“Holy crap, that was unreal. That just popped out of nowhere,” says Billy of the win, who had only just recently chucked back on his rashie after a bit of a break from the water.

“At the end of last year I was super busy … my mother died of cancer. I didn’t surf

much, trying to hang out with my friends and stay busy and positive.

“Two weeks ago I pulled on a rashie and got out there again and it all came together.

“I had a rough time last year on several fronts so I am hoping that this win is a sign of things to come and I am sure my mum was looking over me on Saturday when I got that first wave.”

Although Billy was aiming to break the 30-year-old record of five national titles, shared with five-times winners Iain Buchanan and Wayne Parkes, he says he was still surprised by the outcome.

“All the talent in New Zealand are really good at the moment, all the grommets are really good.”

Taylor Hutchinson and youngsters Elliot Brown (Dunedin) and Elliot Paerata Reid (Piha) in the four-man final.

“It was pretty fun, the waves were pretty big; Piha is usually really good for swells.

It’s good to go to the nationals and hang out with family and friends – everyone from Raglan came up for the last day.”

For his efforts, Billy won a “big cup that we fill up with alcohol”, and which will now have his name engraved on it six times.

“Yeah, that brings back a lot of memories,” says Billy, still in disbelief.

He won his first title in 2010, and then in 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016 and this year.

Raglan Point Boardriders surfers made eight finals at the nationals, and took out seven titles.

Kora Cooper claimed Raglan’s first title at the event in the under-14 boys division, and Brie Bennett claimed the first ever title for the under-14 girls division that was introduced this year.

Phil Willoughby won the over-45s’ title; Chris Malone won the over-35 and over-28 titles; and Caleb Cutmore won the under-16 boys’ title.

The combined effort of Raglan’s surfers won them the interclub title – the first time the Point Boardriders have won that at a national level.

“It was just Raglan, Raglan, Raglan every second division,” says Billy.

He says the next generation of the Raglan Point Boardriders is “looking really good and all the young grommets are proving themselves”.

Billy is off to the Gold Coast in Australia next week in search of making the qualifying series for the world tour.

“I’ve been trying for about six years,” says Billy, who is feeling optimistic.

“I’ve got more to fight for these days.”

A run locally each year in memory new golfing competition is to be

of a local identity whose contribution to the Raglan Golf Club is expected never to be equalled.

Golfers taking part in the pointsaccruing pairs event – which will run over the summer months – will be competing for a memorial trophy honouring the nearly 50 years of work which Myrle Robertson contributed to the club.

The club recently hosted members of

Myrle’s family and it was at this function that one of her sons, Brian, presented what club president Peter Aim describes as the “very significant trophy”.

Myrle died in late September not long shy of her 102nd birthday. She had played golf from the mid 1960s until an untreatable hip collapse finished her golfing days in 1986.

A free enterprise economy O

ver the Christmas break, I read the 600-page autobiography of Sir Richard Branson.

It’s an international best seller and a superb read. Actually, it reads more like an action thriller then a regular autobiography … think hot air balloons. It’s compelling, revealing and certainly a rollercoaster ride into the highs and lows of a brilliant and hardworking man.

It is also a vivid reminder of the “privilege” of living and working in a free enterprise economy like New Zealand as opposed to a controlled economy.

The greatest benefit of a free enterprise economy is that it gives people freedom to choose and, in a business context, freedom to pursue a business that they feel called and motivated to do.

This, of course, leads to competition in the marketplace. We all know that competition is good for the end user in that it keeps a downward pressure on prices.

However, that same competition can be tough if you are the one being taken on.

Last year, I had a number of interactions here in Raglan where I heard a few business owners speak about competitors, with

an underlying assumption that because they were first in town they had a right to be the only one in town. In a free market economy that is a flawed argument. So long as you stick to the rules and play fair then new start-up companies or branches of established companies (namely national chains) are welcome. The market will ultimately decide what is hot and what is not.

I predict some high drama in Raglan in the future.

At the time of her death Myrle remained in office as the club patron, a position the club says was “richly deserved and which she was honoured to hold”.

Peter Aim said it was most unlikely any other member would ever match the time and effort Myrle contributed to the club.

Myrle – originally from Australia – married Archie Robertson at St Peter’s Anglican Church in Raglan well over 70 years ago. Archie’s father had started up Robertsons’ Motor Transport before World War I and Myrtle herself later became a familiar and popular driver on the local bus runs the company operated.

When Archie died more than 30 years ago she moved from Robertson Road to a new home in Gillmour Street.

Myrle was still managing just fine in her own home when the Chronicle visited her in December 2013. Then going on 99, she had three “girls” turning up every Friday to play cards, an outing each Monday afternoon to play 500 at the Raglan Club and cane craftwork giving her little time to “twiddle my thumbs”.

merging artists have come together to create an interactive exhibition as part of the annual Raglan Arts Weekend.

Called No Rules Here, the exhibition includes a graffiti wall for viewers to try out their artistic skills on, opportunities for painting and drawing, a photo booth, film screenings and sausage sizzles.

Freelance film-maker Maryann Tuao, who supported some of the artists last year by promoting them in a short online digital documentary series, says the title of the exhibition reflects the deviation from the standard practice of how art works are usually shown.

“The artists wanted to push the boundaries of how art is usually presented.”

It is the first time that the group of about 28 emerging artists, aged from 9 and including artschool graduates, have come together.

Maryann says their collection of work captures emerging trends and themes in a range of media, such as photography, painting,

drawing, digital work, figurines, fashion and interior design.

She will be playing the trailer for her Raglan Creative Series, which documents prominent Raglan artists sharing their skills with youth, and there will also be surfing films by Billy Lee-Pope.

No Rules Here is being held at the Raglan Town Hall Super Room in Bow St. “It will be a comfy place to chill out, watch some films and try your hand at some art. And we will have a sausage sizzle on Sunday and Monday.”

Visitors can give their feedback on the exhibition by using the photo booth, rather than by writing on a piece of paper.

Whaingaroa is home to many treasures, including the critically endangered Maui dolphin. Every year, for 15 years now, we celebrate this at the annual Maui Dolphin Day. It’s a day to enjoy entertainment from local musicians and youth, to share a kai put on by local fundraising groups, to learn about how to care for our oceans and, of course, to witness or take part in the wacky, splashy, action-packed, infamous Xtreme Recycled Raft Race.

KASM fights ruling against charity status A

t a time when funding is critical for its current fight against seabed mining off the coast of Taranaki, Kasm (Kiwis Against Seabed Mining) will challenge a ruling that denies it charity status.

Kasm chairman Phil McCabe says the decision by the Charities Registration Board in December prevents the community-based action group from accessing funding for its work and denies it tax benefits.

“The issue is that funding is crucial,” says Phil. Kasm still needs to find “40-50k in the next few months” to challenge the bid by Trans-Tasman Resources to mine 50 million tonnes of iron sand a year for 20 years in the South Taranaki Bight. The hearing is due to start about mid-February.

“Having charitable status opens a lot of doors to funding … without it we can’t go asking for money from the pokies in the pubs, and lots of philanthropists will only fund charities.

“Its like anything, if you have the funding you can do good work. When DOC has got the money it does good work, when they don’t stuff starts falling apart.”

Phil says Kasm’s lawyers were drafting up its challenge of the Charities Registration

Board’s decision at a time when they could be working “on the TTR stuff”. The challenge has to be lodged this month.

Experts in Kasm’s legal fight against TTR also need to get their evidence in by the end of this month.

Phil says the registration board made some odd comments about Kasm not doing charitable work.

“We are informing people, gathering information and sharing it,” says Phil. “It is about protecting the environment for the people for tomorrow. There is no personal gain.”

In the ruling, the board said that while some of Kasm’s advocacy could be classified as charitable, such as protecting the environment, most of its activities were “directed to advocating its point of view on seabed mining”.

Last year Kasm successfully submitted against a similar application by TTR to mine the same area, and it has also thwarted a bid at seabed mining by Chatham Rock Phosphate.

In 2014, Greenpeace won a longrunning battle to have its political advocacy recognised as a charitable act, with the Supreme Court ruling that political advocacy should not exclude an organisation from achieving charity status.

Meanwhile, Phil says Kasm has had a lot of “fun and games” this month with the Environment Protection Agency, which is managing the decision-making process regarding TTR’s bid.

He says more than 500 people had stated in their submissions that they wanted to be heard, including 118 in Raglan, 60-odd in Auckland, 38 in Wanganui, 26 in New Plymouth and 19 in Wellington.

However, hearings will only be held for submitters in New Plymouth and Wellington, which Phil says is “not acceptable or satisfactory” because it meant that many would be unable to attend.

“Last time the bulk of the evidence was heard in Wellington, with hearings for submitters in Hamilton, Patea, Whangarei and New Plymouth.

Phil says he believes there is pressure from the Government to keep costs down, because hearing from some 500 submitters would otherwise take some 20 days.

“This is an added pain in the arse.” * Help Kasm fight seabed mining by becoming a member for just $10 a year or by making a donation at kasm.org.nz.

Justin’s looking to go places on larger, dual-season superyacht

here’s no hint of the backto-work blues this week

The Raglan-raised 21 year old, who has just enjoyed two weeks at home and another fortnight in Bali with a few old friends, was to have left New Zealand yesterday to join the crew of what will be his second superyacht, the 92-metre Lady Lara.

Although

Justin’s

recently

completed a 17-month stint as a junior deckhand on another Russian millionaire-owned vessel, his new posting is set to take him in some exciting new directions – both literally and career-wise.

It’s a dual-season yacht this time – sailing the Mediterranean from April to October then the Caribbean from November to March – and for Justin it’s another step on the way to becoming an officer.

That’s where Justin completed

which was based at the time in Barcelona.

From there he got to cruise around the Mediterranean – Italy, Spain, Greece and the south of France – and had a paid trip back home in March last year during his regulation month off.

“We also crossed the Atlantic Ocean to Miami three times,” Justin says. That’s a 20-day journey covering 3800 nautical miles at a rate of just 10 or 11 knots.

Justin was the youngest of nine crew members aboard the Lady Sura, sharing a tiny cabin with one other. His work included taking superyacht guests out jet-skiing and wakeboarding, for instance, but also involved the less exciting task of cleaning the boat.

A big plus was the adventures he had when ashore. Justin recently went skydiving in Florida and visited the Everglades National Park there – a 1.5-million-acre wetlands preserve through which he took a flat-bottomed fan or swamp boat ride to see the wildlife.

He’s trekked in the large Italian island of Sardinia, and in France where a highlight was the Verdon Gorge – a river canyon often considered to be one of Europe’s most beautiful.

And he’s climbed the Rock of Gibraltar with views from the top of both Spain and Morocco.

He also flew to Amsterdam in the Netherlands and did “the tourist things”, and spent an idyllic seven weeks on the Greek isle of Mykonos during a large chunk of time off.

Having left the Lady Sura in November last year to complete a yachtmaster qualification in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Justin’s now ready to take on more responsibilities as one of a 29-strong crew aboard the luxurious Lady Lara.

A bonus is a bigger bed and an Apple TV in his room this time round, he laughs.

And he’s keen to combine academic study with practical paid work aboard the motor mega yacht as he sets out now on a career path to officer status. He’s got one of the seven modules – Officer of the Watch – already under his belt and will tackle the Efficient Deck Hand course next.

It’s definitely a good way to do your OE, Justin reckons: “You leave Raglan and you don’t look back.”

Not that he doesn’t wish he’d had just a bit more time at home.

There’s a few other young Raglanders, including Luka Brunton and Jade Klenner, back this month enjoying life in their hometown before heading off overseas again for second or third superyacht seasons in Europe.

Others like Matti ThorleySymes have more recently joined superyachts. He’s spent his Christmas-New Year in dock in Barcelona, where many superyachts head in the off-season.

Restricted Fire Season for Rural and Urban Areas

Pursuant to section 22 Forest & Rural Fires Act 1977 & Waikato District Council Open Air Bylaw 2007 and 2012.

Waikato District Council as Fire Authority for the Waikato territorial district gives notice of a RESTRICTED fire season in effect from 20 January 2017 until further notice.

The risk of fires spreading is becoming higher as temperatures rise and rainfall decreases, increasing fire danger levels across the district.

SALUTATIONS FROM SOUNDSPLASH CREW. A quick update. The road up to the Wainui Reserve will be closed to Public from 8pm5am Friday 20th and Saturday 21st Jan 2017 unless you have a festival ticket. There is no general parking for Festival Attendees on site it is reserved for those with camp tickets. For general and day passes, shuttles will leave from Raglan information centre via Kopua domain and run from 11am till 2am Friday and Saturday and Sunday 10am-4pm.

We apologise for any inconvenience.

During a RESTRICTED fire season permits are required for all fires in the open air within rural and urban areas of the Waikato except for barbeques, traditional cooking fires and fires in properly constructed incinerators or small braziers.

Properties within a one kilometre margin of a Department of Conservation area are required to obtain a fire permit from the Department of Conservation.

Permits for areas within the Waikato district can be applied for by contacting the Waikato District Council or the Council website, www.waikatodistrict.govt.nz. Fires cannot be lit until a permit has been obtained.

Landowners are reminded that they are responsible for the management of all fires lit on their land and could be held accountable for any suppression costs if the fire gets out of control, even if a permit has been issued.

Fires must be safe, contained and monitored at all times. Consideration must be made to avoid smoke nuisance to neighbours and its effect on road visibility.

Those living on peat soils should ensure that there is no risk of fire becoming seated in these soils.

At no time is it permissible to burn green vegetation, rubber, plastics, toxic materials or treated timber.
