Dear Editor This will be my last piece for the Chronicle before I go to my Cascades retirement unit number 22. But I hope to send in a couple more pieces, eventually, as a guide to others who are considering the same step.

I’ve lived in Raglan for 17 years, the longest I’ve lived in one place for all of my 83 years. But enough of this old stuff; I frequently have a bee in my bonnet and today is no exception.

It is annoying enough to answer the phone and, after a few pleasantries like “how are you today?” or “lovely weather isn’t it?”, the voice on the other end of the line launches into a spiel about some wonderful product you really need. But a new approach, no doubt thought up by an up-and-

coming young man (women are more sensible), is to start their spiel the moment you pick up the phone. (It might even be automated.) The moment I hear the first few words and realise what’s going on I slam the phone down. So where did that get them? Nowhere! It’s just a waste of my time and theirs. Under the old, soften-up approach I might stay on the line long enough to get mildly hooked. My advice on this new way is to slam the phone down the moment you realise what’s up. Incidentally, if you want to argue this matter with me, come to Orca, 8pm-9.30pm on Friday, January 20. Dave Maybee and Peter Skandera will be playing me out of Raglan. All Welcome.

hat better time or place to pop the question than during a romantic horse ride at sunset along Raglan’s picturesque Ngarunui Beach?

Well, it might have helped if there wasn’t a raging southwesterly and even the odd squall sweeping across to make this particular dusk a less than engaging scene.

But love conquers all – so the saying goes – and Taupo’s George Smyth got

the answer he wanted when he crouched on bended knee in the black ironsand and asked his partner of three years, Sammie Lilburn-Taylor, to marry him.

“I wanted to do something special for her,” 28 year old George told the Chronicle.

“She loves the beach.”

The proposal came as a complete surprise to Sammie even though he’d made sure she packed a favourite top for the outing. He in turn was carrying a diamond ring ready to present at the appropriate moment.

Petra Yorke of Surf & Turf Horse Riding, who set up the romantic ride just before Christmas, says it came barely a week after a Hamilton couple did something very similar, with a rug and two wine glasses arranged at the southern end of Ngarunui Beach to celebrate.

Petra’s been offering horse rides and swims on the beach for a few years now “but this has never happened before,” she laughs of the two surprise proposals in quick succession.

Problems with young wanna-be gangsters escalate over summer break

oung wanna-be gang members wandering around town wearing red bandanas tied around their faces, barking like dogs and fighting have been a major problem for police during the Christmas break.

On Sunday there were two fights between youths in town, with a group of about eight to 10 young people fighting outside the library at about midday and a later altercation outside Plunket.

Constable Raewyn McLachlan says fighting has been happening since Christmas, with those involved aged between 13 and 16.

“It’s not necessarily the same people but the same behaviour.

“The kids aren’t gang members. They are dressed in red and barking at people. That’s what they were doing (on Sunday).

So while I am saying they are not gang members they certainly behave in a way that suggests they want to be.”

Constable McLachlan says police officers were still trying to get to the bottom of the fights on Sunday, although conversations on Raglan Notice Board suggest that the fights broke out in retaliation of the theft of a hat from a young boy.

Constable McLachlan says New Year’s Eve was a busy night for police, with a few arrests for disorder and fighting.

A police media team spokesperson says at about 3am on New Year’s Day a group of men wearing gang-related paraphernalia, one armed

with a machete, threatened two men near the jetty at the end of Bow St, and chased them.

One of the men suffered injuries to his face and arms in an attack and police inquiries are continuing.

A man is also before the district court facing charges of common assault – “he punched another male in the head” – and possession of an offensive weapon for an earlier incident, about 1.30am, near the jetty.

“A group of people were walking to the Kopua Holiday Park from the Central Business District. They had a dispute over a girl and a man pulled out what looked to be a tyre iron,” the spokesperson said.

Constable McLachlan says while there were a lot of Mongrel Mob members wearing patches in town on New Year’s Eve it was the youth who were causing problems.

There were about 10-12 patched members and “they were awesome”, she says.

“They were stopping stuff from happening, stopping fights, stopping disorder …”

She says the behaviour of youth in Raglan is disconcerting.

“It’s been quite challenging.

“The prolific of red is just not nice.”

She says the youths’ behaviour and dress would lead the public to assume that they were being taught and encouraged but this was not necessarily the case.

“This is a town problem that is getting worse and escalating.

“It’s these young kids that are walking around in red, tying their red bandanas over their faces. Trouble is happening around them … No

one seems to have the same problems that they are causing.

“So many people are washing their hands of it. Some people need to take more responsibility for the behaviour of these kids … the more we ignore it – it is not going to go away.”

Raglan Maori Warden chairperson Nancy Koha, who was newly elected in November and came from 10 years’ working in Otara with the Turehou Maori Wardens, says in her experience the problems with youth is related to drugs.

“In Auckland it’s always about the fast money.

“The new drugs are all aimed at the young ones. Such a little town needs to band together to push that crap out and maybe it will ease out that (behaviour), too.”

She says it will take a combined effort to resolve Raglan’s issues with its youth, including the Maori wardens, police, the business community and even the local gang members “if they understand what we are going on about and if they are keen to help us clean the town up”.

“We need to get our heads right before we approach the community, we all have to be on the same page.”

Nancy says many of the young ones causing problems – drinking and barking, and being anti-social – were from Raglan. They know members in her team and call out in greeting, and she is encouraging those Maori wardens to work with the youth.

Nancy says on New Year’s Eve there were a lot of young ones who “just wanted to go out there and be mischievous and cause problems for people who were enjoying themselves”.

A tourist reported to her that he had been threatened by a youth carrying a rock on the main street.

“I will report them to the police, they leave me with no choice.

“I’m always mindful of what they are carrying on them.”

Meanwhile, also on New Year’s Eve, police handed out about 25-30 fines for breaches of the liquor ban in town and more than 25 infringement notices at road checks for excess breath alcohol.

On the night of December 23, thieves smashed through the glass doors of a portable storage unit near Rock-it and stole five brand new bikes from the pop-up bike hire business recently started by Cyclery owner Dirk De Ruysscher and Waikato district councillor Lisa Thomson.

A rider is still on the beach exercising one horse while leading another, and two more horses pulling sulkies are being coaxed over the wind-blown sand hump at the beginning of the path through the dunes to the beach.

But any poo on the beach “gets washed away by the tide” – besides other people leave rubbish and broken bottles in the sand, and dog poo.

The issue of horses on the beach is contentious. Public opinion ranges from “my dogs eat it” and “I have to clean up after my dog, horse owners should, too” to “my kids step in it and swim in it” and “the poor pipis don’t stand a chance”. Then there is the other side of the fence: “What a bunch of moaners!”

Horse poo is good for dogs, Petra offers, but admits she’s not keen on her dog eating it then sticking his nose in her face.

Waikato District Council says it has not had many complaints and only about rider conduct.

Raglan Coastal Reserves Advisory Committee chairman Shayne Gold says he hears plenty of complaints about horses on the beach, including from his wife.

Complaints include horse poo on the sand and in the water where people are swimming, horses being ridden in the sand dunes and other areas where they shouldn’t be, or horses throwing riders from their backs after being spooked by dogs.

“They are a big animal. If you are not a horse person it is quite daunting, a horse galloping up to you on the beach.”

Horse riding is permitted along marked tracks in Wainui Reserve but it’s also policy that recreational activities should not compromise the enjoyment of others and have little environmental impact. Dune restoration is a touchy subject, too, as the coastline continues to erode away.

Shayne says the number of horses on the beach is “growing”, along with all the activity in Raglan’s reserves.

“It’s certainly something that we are going to have to address with public pressure. If people keep mistreating the right to ride horses on the beach a bylaw will be created and there won’t be any horses on the beach, like they did with vehicles.”

Shayne says horse riders could always take their horses to Ruapuke, where it isn’t so busy.

He expects the problem with horses will rear its head again, and “we will have to

sort something out before next summer”.

Whaingaroa Harbour Care manager and Waikato regional councillor Fred Lichtwark says “stock” – which horses are – should not be allowed in the coastal marine environment because they damage the biodiversity.

“Environmentally, it is not good practice.

“How many are doing that daily up and down that beach, consistently smashing all the little tuatua and spat that are on the beach?

“It’s all about the weight of the animal and the damage it does to the environment.”

Also, seeing “horses walk on seabed grass is totally inappropriate. You might as well drive a bulldozer over someone’s lawn”.

“In this day and age we have to appreciate the fact that the resources are running out. It’s 2017, it’s time to wake up, not be selfish, use the land for what is appropriate. Horses are not designed to walk on sand dunes and beaches, they live in paddocks and prairies, pasture, not on the beach.”

Fred says the regional council has no policy regarding horses on the beach.

“Council has sacrificed our beaches.”

However: “The (Waikato Regional) Coastal Plan is coming up for review. I will look to make rules to protect our resources for the future, be it from a f…ing horse, a bulldozer, whatever.”

Council announces new business service in Raglan Raglan business people will soon be able to access a free advisory and support service to help their enterprise grow.

The service will be launched in Raglan early this year as a result of a partnership between the Waikato District Council’s economic development initiative, Open Waikato, and Waikato Innovation Park.

Waikato Innovation Park is the lead agency for New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and Callaghan Innovation funding programmes and is based at Ruakura in Hamilton.

extended a free service to businesses in Tuakau last year offering support for start-up businesses as well as advice on business expansion, export market development, research and development funding and product development.

The success of the Tuakau service has accelerated the extension of the service to Raglan. To date 11 businesses have taken advantage of the new service at the council’s Tuakau office, and six of these have progressed with specific support programmes.

Te Uku teen enjoys gap year away from all except the classroom

Students taking a gap year typically try to get away from it all and do or experience something well away from the classroom or lecture hall.

Billy Stairmand has been looking forward to this week.

“It is good to be back in the water and putting the rashie on,” says a relaxed Billy.

“The waves are not too bad, there is a bank out the back, big lefties. I feel like I am surfing good so I am looking forward to it,” he says in reference to his pending match-ups.

Billy advanced to the quarterfinals

of the event winning his second round.

He is chasing a record sixth Open Men’s Division title at the event.

The 2017 National Championships started on Sunday at Piha Beach, west of Auckland, and will end on Saturday.

More than 250 have entered the event, which includes 22 divisions and age groups.

Te Uku teen Charlie Hamilton did his OE a little differently. While he certainly got away – to the other side of the world – he didn’t fully escape the education system, working as a teacher’s assistant along with other “gappies” at what he describes as a posh prep school in England.

Like Charlie – who’d recently completed his secondary studies at Hamilton Boys’ High School – most of the other “gappies” were school-leavers.

Only they were from Aussie and England.

“I was the first Kiwi there,” Charlie told the Chronicle last weekend as he relaxed back at his family’s lifestyle block in the newish Three Streams subdivision on the upper harbour.

Charlie says he loved working at Orwell Park School in Ipswich. The primary school – which had both day pupils and boarders – catered for the very wealthy, and whole families of Nigerian and Spanish children for instance lived and were educated there while their parents remained in their home countries.

Six of the “gappies” lived together on the school premises in a flatting situation but with everything

including meals provided, Charlie explains. And while they worked five days a week in and out of the classroom – hearing the young children read, supervising sports and so on – they were paid for their efforts and had regular long weekends to see the sights.

But Charlie particularly loved the opportunity to go travelling abroad during term breaks, and to experience being able to literally step from one country to another.

“I went to 23 countries,” says the now 19 year old who was born and bred in Raglan. A family trip to America and the UK had been his only real travel till this, his big OE. Charlie first explored England, Ireland and Scotland by train this time around, and had some contacts through his mother Hayley – who’s originally from Peterborough – to catch up on.

Then at Easter he got a “ridiculously cheap” fare to Budapest, Hungary’s capital, which he now rates as his favourite city.

“Lots of nightlife, cheap beers, so much to do, massive thermal spas, markets … and we stayed in a party hotel on the top of a bar,” he says.

The long summer holidays in England gave him the chance to splash out on a camping-style bus tour of 17 countries on the continent with ‘Topdeck’ – the same company, incidentally, that his parents had travelled with a couple of decades earlier.

“I met so many people … not many Kiwis but lots of Aussies.”

At the end of the European summer Charlie took another trip with friends, spending a week in Lagos – a coastal town in southern Portugal’s Algarve region with “the best beaches I’ve ever seen”.

Having been a volunteer lifeguard with the Raglan surf club, Charlie reckons he couldn’t help but be impressed by the Atlantic Ocean’s glamorous white-sand beaches “like in magazines and the movies”.

His final fling to Romania – despite some doubts around travelling to the formerly communist European states – topped off an unforgettable gap year. “Chilling” at Dracula’s castle in Transylvania was a highlight of that trip, along with a visit to the renowned Libearty Bear Sanctuary for bears rescued from captivity.

It was only when Charlie ventured south to Bucharest, the country’s capital and commercial centre, that he felt a bit unsafe.

“It felt quite communist … unreal,” he says, describing an incident in which he and his friends were served by an eight year old at a bottle store.

“We were never IDed in Europe, only in the UK.” Charlie returned home just before Christmas and will head down country to Wellington’s Victoria University at the end of next month to study building sciences.

The Chronicle had a quick chat with 13-year-old Josef Jungwirth, pictured above with his Raglan Point Boardriders U14 and U18 Club Champ trophies.

How did you first get into surfing, Josef?

My dad pushed me off on his old long board when we lived at the Mount when I

was about 6 years old. It was heaps of fun because the whole whanau got involved.

What do you love about it?

I love being in the ocean. I really like pushing it to the limit and trying new tricks.

I love surfing with my mates and family and staying active.

Tell us about your comp experiences in 2016?

It's awesome meeting up with all my mates from around the country at the comps.

The U14 age group is really talented and competitive and we push each other hard.

How did you go in terms of results?

I made six out of nine finals, nationally.

I haven't won one yet – that's definitely the goal for 2017.

This year I won the U14 and U18 Point Boardriders Club Champs, which was really tough being up against Jayden Willoughby, Kora Cooper, Navryn Meddings-Malone, Caleb Cutmore and other local shredders.

Top three spots to surf in New Zealand?

Whangamata Bar, Stock Route in Gissy and, of course, Manu Bay. What is happening for you in 2017.

Where are you going to school?

I’m going to be in year 9 at Raglan Area School. I hope to get a lot more water time and it will be cool not to travel so much. Oh, and heaps of learning, too.

Do you see yourself in the RAS Surf Academy?

Hopefully – that's the goal. I want to really push my surfing to the limit. The academy has a really cool vibe and Larry Fisher and Dean Hishon are awesome.

Any words of advice for kids who are wanting to learn to surf?

Keep at it, don't give up and have heaps of fun!
