Photo: www.facebook.com/kenhansenphotographerpage Dear Editor It is good that so many opportunities exist in Raglan to protest against the proposed closure of the Westpac Bank. I suspect that the decision to close it was made by someone in an office with a wonderful view from its window but no knowledge of Raglan.

This is a rapidly expanding coastal community and it needs one bank at least for various financial office services even if they don’t actually bank with Westpac.

I supposed I am making the rash assumption that social responsibility carries any weight in the decisions of

high finance. Perhaps it's up to all of us to make decisions that are based on making enquiries about what we are supporting.

It’s reassuring that some information has recently been published about investments that may support cluster bombs and other weapons which can cause terrible injury or a painful death. Of course many of everyday families are too involved in immediate problems. But those of us who have more time to spare should keep our eyes open and speak out.

Dear Editor The Chronicle reported on some very important discussions at the community board's meeting on Raglan Naturally. It is critical for the community to own the plan. We are faced though with a council led by Mayor Sanson that has progressively moved to centralise and control services from Ngaruawahia.

This is the reason why our Raglan rates increase so much every year and the community board is no longer listened to.

Wayne Morris told the meeting that the Raglan community board used to, 'have a lot more clout'. Steve Soanes told the meeting about when he was the area manager for Raglan and when the community said, 'we don't want these things', that the council listened.

Sadly we no longer have a Raglan area manager.

The face of the council in Raglan has been reduced to a team leader with no say on anything outside the doors of the library.

When we had an area manager, arranging local work was done quickly and cheaply. Now there are multiple costly layers involved. For example, arranging of mowing the grass verges around Raglan is done from Ngaruawahia.

They recently awarded the contract to the Christchurch City Council's City Care Ltd. Christchurch then awarded the Raglan part of the contract to Raglan Lawns.

Good to see a local business doing the work. Annoying though to see Ngaruawahia and Christchurch involved and adding costs and increases to our rates.

It doesn't have to be like this. Thames Coromandel is an example of a decentralised district council where local people are allowed to have a say and rates are not continually increasing.

For Raglan to once more have a say we need to vote for a mayor who will decentralise and listen to our community.

Community input sought into civil defence emergency response plan W residents

aikato Civil Defence is inviting to a meeting on

the development of the Raglan Community Response Plan, to be held in the town hall supper room at 6pm today.

Merv Balloch, local civil defence controller for Waikato District Council, said no one knew a community better than the people that lived and worked in it, and that was why it was important to have the community involved in community response planning.

“It’s about a community coming together and looking after each other in the first 72

hours of an event: having a communication tree; where people would assemble; how they look after one and another.”

He said it was important to have many people involved in the planning.

“It’s about the community itself looking after the community, not emergency services who might be tasked elsewhere.

“The plan encourages communities to be more self-sufficient, and enables them to take care of the many smaller issues which would normally be left to the emergency responders, freeing up emergency services to deal with more life threatening issues.”

The development of the plan is to ensure there are measures in place to help

the community take actions to look after itself in the immediate aftermath of an emergency.

It includes the following: teaching people to understand the hazards that exist in Raglan; teaching people what they can do to prepare themselves, and those who depend on them, to help survive an emergency event; ensuring people know the warning signals to evacuate, and where to evacuate to; helping the community to put their response plan into action without any immediate help from emergency services or civil defence; and supporting each other until help arrives.

reminisce about their schooling, at Ruapuke School or through The Correspondence School. They were resourceful country children.

Going to School Rodger Trolove started school aged 6.

When walking to school he looked out for the teacher’s footprint in the dirt road. If he saw the print he hurried, if not he knew he was ahead of the teacher and could take his time.

As there was no road to their farm, Jill Goulter-Ward walked along the top of a hill over sand banks for about an hour to get to school. Once, riding to school through lupins with sister Olive, the horse shied depositing both girls in the creek. Jill preferred to walk.

Rodger remembers classmate Bill Barlow walking more than 11 kilometres

to school. “First, he used to get up at 4am to milk five cows by hand. He could not swim so used to cross the stream on stilts.

He left the stilts on the bank.”

At school A year or so later Rodger recalls talking to his friend Des Liddle during class. Jocelyn Bird, the teacher, asked them to stay behind after school. “Stand over there and hold out your hand,” she said. Terrified the boys held out their hands. They received a piece of chocolate each, not the strap that they were expecting. They were very good for their “lovely teacher” after that.

Rodger had to learn the meaning and spelling of 12-20 words for homework.

Children would get up in front of the class to recite their times tables. Bev Swann recalls disliking giving a morning talk. Maurice Trolove remembers the alphabet was written across the top of the

blackboard, and the 12 times table written out in full down one side. As there were 12 pennies to the shilling, children had to know the 12 times table.

School games included rounders (like baseball but with a flat wooden bat and tennis ball) and “running down” (similar to bull rush). The annual school picnic was a great day with parents joining in egg and spoon races, sack races and relays. Unlimited fresh ice cream was available.

Correspondence School John Swann was the eldest in a family of seven children and had to wait to start school until his sister turned 5 in 1946.

He remembers thinking “what a waste of time” on his first day of school, sitting at the kitchen table.

Packages of work in canvas bags from the Correspondence School were collected from a delivery point once every two weeks. (A dirt road to link the farm to the district was not made until 1952 and was without metal until 1967).

Completed work went back for marking in another canvas bag. It would take three weeks to a month to get the work back, so “you could sometimes continue to make the same mistake for a while”.

As the family grew, a room was set aside as the schoolroom. John was 17 when he finished school. It was not till a few years later he felt regrets about missing out on sports and games with children from other families.

’ve always been a keen adventurer and enjoy turning everyday life into play whenever I get the chance. It might sound childish but not enough of us can let go of the modern day chains and simply go and play or explore.

Raglan is quite the opposite with so many of us utilising this incredible landscape in so many unique and diverse ways. However many of those activities incur costly set-up fees that not everyone can afford.

Like many great things, Raglan Rock came about by default not design. My good friend, Matt Taggart from Ozone Kites, gave me the confidence and helped me dare to dream and take the plunge to start and create what now has become.

I cast my mind back to Roald Dahl's book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, where one lucky person who didn’t have all the money in the world won the chance to go on an amazing journey. An adventure that would be the envy of all their friends as they were the lucky one!

Replacement bank sought as Westpac closure looms

he Raglan Chamber of Commerce vows to find another bank that will service the town if Westpac closes its Raglan branch.

“If Westpac pulls the plug, we are definitely going to go on the search for another banking service in Raglan,” said chamber representative Charlie Young.

“Obviously that building is owned by someone … why not find another bank that can fit Raglan in this time of community need.

“We will come out of it better. That’s what we hope to accomplish.”

Mr Young was one of about 50 people who, on Thursday last week, attended a protest organised by the Raglan House

(formerly known as the Community House) against the closure of the Westpac Raglan branch.

The Raglan branch is one of 19 that the bank has said it intends to close due to a rise in the use of internet banking.

Raglan House budget advisor Tony Agar said his biggest concern was that “we have a lot of elderly people who don’t access internet banking”.

“They say 85 per cent of people do their banking online, which means 15 per cent don’t. There is a misconception that everyone has access to internet banking.”

He said Raglan had a high proportion of elderly people who relied on being able to go to the bank to draw money from their pensions, and there were plenty of rural folk who could not get the internet where they lived.

“We provide a bus for people to come into town so they can go to the bank.

“For some people the bank is the only option.

“People on tight budgets may not be able to afford the internet, let alone a smart phone or a computer.

“If we lose that service they have to go over the hill. That costs $20 or so, which is quite a substantial amount coming out your food money.”

Mr Agar said Raglan House also worked closely with the bank to help people with their budgeting plans.

“We think it is very short-sighted of the bank.

“We are a growing community. You only have to look around and see houses going up everywhere, and there is the new subdivision … with the potential for another 500 houses.

“In the summer there is an influx of tourists who need the bank to exchange money or help with international transfers.”

Waikato District Council Mayor Allan Sanson said a meeting he had organised with Westpac’s Waikato branch manager never happened.

Mr Sanson said Westpac cancelled the day before the meeting and he had been trying to organise another one but they seemed “a bit aloof”.

“They said they were still in consultation with staff.”

Mr Young said the chamber had also written to the bank expressing its views and urging it not to close its branch but had heard nothing back.

He said an announcement by the bank was expected on September 21.

“We want to encourage individuals to write to the bank before then and make some noise about it,” Mr Young said.

He said the closures made a mockery out of Westpac’s so-called community values.

“They have a responsibility to the communities in New Zealand and not just their shareholders.”

The Raglan House has a petition of 300 signatures to deliver to the bank.

While arguably its world-class surfing breaks have put New Zealand’s Raglan on the map, in its Queensland counterpart’s case it’s the airfield and the spectacular Old Station Fly-in and Heritage Show which is held there annually.

The airfield is 15 kilometres out of town in a scenic valley on the Old Station, a working Brahman cattle station that also encompasses the heritage-listed Langmorn Homestead and that has been owned by the Creed family since 1869.

The air show, billed as “a weekend of fun for families, aviators and enthusiasts of aircraft and machinery”, has put what is really a little two-horse town on the map, family spokesperson Leonie Creed told the Chronicle.

Leonie – whose late husband George was a longtime member of the local flying club – proudly added that $46,000 was raised for the rescue chopper service at this year’s 25th anniversary event.

Pilots fly in from all over Australia and farther afield while hundreds flock to the property and camp onsite for the weekendlong event which, in more recent years, has also included tractor pulling and a truck show.

Leonie filled the Chronicle in on a bit of Raglan’s history, saying it was once a railway town where steam trains en route topped up their water supplies from the local (tidal) creek.

But it was also earlier a gold town and around 300 gold diggers were working the Raglan goldfield from 1867. A local school opened soon after, becoming known from 1911 as Raglan State School. It closed down 20 years ago.

Leonie, incidentally, reckoned every state of Australia including Tasmania had a town called Raglan, all of them named after the first Lord Raglan who commanded British forces in the Crimea War. We are not as alone as we thought.

Always known as Ann, it is with a heavy heart to inform that she passed away just before 9am on the 2 September 2016 in Waikato Hospital. Ann had been battling with her health for many years and went in peace surrounded by her family. She leaves behind her three children Robert, Georgina, Coralie, and also many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Ann joins her husband Alan to fish to their hearts content and watch over their family and friends.

Ann lived most of her life in Raglan and was heavily involved in her community. She was a member of Surf Lifesaving, The Lions, RSA, and was on the Raglan Community Board in 2001.

A memorial service will be held at the Raglan Club on Saturday 10 September 2016, at 11am to remember and celebrate the life of this special woman who will be greatly missed. All are welcome.
