Kasm rallies support for second, bigger fight against seabed mining company

L

ove your coastline and your ocean? Then Kiwis Against Seabed Mining (Kasm) urges you to make a submission against TransTasman Resources’ latest application to mine 50 million tonnes of iron sand a year for 20 years off the coast of Taranaki, and to make a donation to help their legal fight.

Kasm has prepared a template for people to make a submission to the Environment Protection Agency (EPA), and says it will need to raise about $100,000 to pay for scientific expertise to oppose TTR’s bid.

This is the second time Kasm will fight TTR’s plans to mine 67 square kilometres of seabed in the South Taranaki Bight, 22-36km off Patea- Hawera. In 2014, the EPA rejected TTR’s application for consent, citing that the “ability for life to exist in the greater marine area would be significantly compromised” and that the “life supporting capacity of the environment could not be safeguarded”.

A public meeting was held in Raglan on Thursday last week, held by Kasm. It was one of many meetings that have been held by Kasm up and down the west coast, to rally community support.

Kasm chairman Phil McCabe said nothing much had changed in TTR’s intentions but it had new science to talk down environmental effects and the EPA process also looked

like it would be diminished, making it more favourable for the applicant.

TTR plans a 24/7 mining operation where it will extract 8000 tonnes of sediment every hour from 11 metres below the seabed.

Only 10 per cent of the extracted material will be processed to iron ore, with 95 per cent being dumped back into the marine environment.

Of TTR’s application, 150 pages regarding plume modeling, or flocculation, regarding the dumping of sand back into the sea, has been blacked out.

“You need to sign a confidentiality agreement to see it,” said Phil. “If our expert signs it, reads it, then he can’t talk to us about it.

“How are we supposed to make informed decisions if we haven’t got all the information?

It makes me want to swear, really.”

Phil said TTR called the region it wanted to mine a “virtual desert” but a report by the Taranaki Regional Council showed otherwise.

The stretch of coastline was also a habitat for endangered Maui’s dolphins and pygmy blue whales.

Nothing could live or survive in the plumes of sand surrounding the area, Phil said.

Seabed mining was a “destructive activity”, and an industry that the National Government wanted to see in New Zealand.

Phil said the fight against TTR had to be stronger this time round.

“If TTR is successful in its application then it will open the way for more seabed mining companies in New Zealand.

“Everyone needs to stand up and do their part: make a donation; make a submission.”

He said 4800 submissions were made regarding TTR’s last application – 300 times more submissions than the EPA had ever had before. Ninety-six per cent of the submissions were in opposition.

“I reckon we need 10,000 submissions at least this time.”

Kasm is again hiring legal and scientific experts to try and beat TTR. “Creative fundraising is where a bunch of energy needs to go,” said Phil.

“It’s our responsibility to stand up and protect New Zealand’s coastal environment.

“Every stretch of coastline is loved and valued by someone.”

Playcentre mums honour Supergran

iette Bennett-Smith thought it was “very peculiar” last week for Raglan Playcentre to be holding its annual meeting at a restaurant downtown.

But then Miette had no idea it was a special occasion, and that she would be honoured as the group’s first life member.

“I didn’t know there was such a thing,” a delighted Miette told the Chronicle of her surprise award that Tuesday night. She returned from the Orca Restaurant and Bar function bearing a framed certificate and bouquet of flowers for outstanding service to the centre and its whanau.

Miette’s been the “bedrock” of Raglan Playcentre, says centre president Bridget Bull, who posted “we couldn’t do it without you” on the group’s Facebook page soon after the unorthodox annual meeting.

As for Miette, she looks forward with a vengeance to every Wednesday morning Playcentre session at the Scout Hall in Cliff St. “It’s meaningful to me and helpful to

others,” says the 76-year-old grandmother of the volunteer role she took on five years ago after a call for help from the then fledgling group via a Chronicle advert.

“I already had my child accreditation certificate plus police clearance as a member of the Baha’i faith,” Miette explains, “so thought okay, why not.”

She’d recently returned to Raglan from the Baha’i World Centre in Israel with her now late husband, Murray Smith, who for more than a dozen years was deputy secretary-general of the Baha’i International Community’s United Nations Office.

Miette had been involved there primarily in library work, but was happy now to pick up on her own training from way back in the late 60s when she was a playcentre mum herself in Whangarei and where Murray was the local MP. Her first visit to Raglan Playcentre, however, was an eye-opener. The sessions, held then in St Peter’s Anglican Church hall just down the road from her upper Bow St home, were organised chaos and had Miette

thinking “oh my gosh, how do they manage!”

Young mums were taking on every role from supervisors to cleaners with their preschoolers playing hard-out around them.

They needed help to get organised and Miette, says Bridget in admiration, “always has three hands”.

Without young children of her own to worry about, Miette can hold a baby or comfort a toddler when needs be, she explains.

Miette’s been able to call on both her 1960s training as a playcentre mum – in which primary caregivers are encouraged to train in early childhood and adult education and then run the centres co-operatively – and to apply “tactics” she’s picked up as a handson grandmother.

“That’s been the delight from the beginning,” she says. “I can apply some of the techniques I’ve learnt from my own grandsons to the boys down here (at playcentre).”

Miette says the whole Raglan Playcentre experience enriches her life, “and I am just so amazed at child development”.

By often taking on the “mundane chores” like opening up the Scout Hall and buying the essentials – bulk flour and salt, for instance, which are now stored in her garage – Miette feels she can free the mums to immerse themselves in the observation and education of their children.

She’s excited at the prospect of the playcentre shifting by about the middle of next year into its own building – yet to be built – around the back of Raglan Area School.

There’s lots of enthusiasm for the move among mums involved, Miette adds, and some NZ Playcentre Federation funding is already in place. “It will happen.”

And then things may be so well organised – with a place for everything – that she could become redundant, Miette ponders half-heart edly.

Terry is the reason behind Julius’s obsession.

“My mum had a friend, Terry, who was a firefighter for the Waitakere fire brigade. He showed me around his brigade and told me why it was good to give back to the community and how his brigade was one big family.

He had a brain tumour when I was 6, and just before he passed away he gave me his helmet and belt buckle.

Because he was such a nice guy I just wanted to take over the role for him.

“When he died the brigade looked after his family for a very long time.”

The seven-day Recruit Training Programme, which Julius attended in Rotorua alongside blokes old enough to be his father, is not for the fainthearted.

Inger reckons Julius came back a couple of kilos lighter and shattered, with his gloves pitch black, covered in soot.

Julius says the first day of the training programme was spent rolling out hoses. Another entire day was spent wearing full kit, weighing 25 kilograms (including breathing apparatus.

And he got to train with real fire, and see how quickly out of control they can get.

Raglan fire chief Kevin Holmes says the training means that Julius is now qualified to do everything a firefighter does.

He says becoming a firefighter so young is a fantastic achievement, and Julius is the youngest to have joined the Raglan crew.

“He came to us when he was 15 looking to join and we had to send him away because you can only join when you are 16 (with parents’ permission).

“He came back the day after his 16th birthday.”

He may be young but it is Julius’s plan to have a long, solid career as a volunteer firefighter in Raglan, and eventually become a paid firefighter in Hamilton.

All his plans are geared towards being a firefighter, says Inger.

“It is all he has ever wanted to do.

That was always the plan. ‘I am going to be a firefighter’.”

While still a high school student, Julius goes to Wintec’s Trades Academy once a week to study plumbing, building and electrical.

He’s also thinking about doing a paramedic course when he finishes school.

“The only reason why he wants to do a trade is because it will allow him to work in Raglan and respond to callouts,” laughs Inger.

And if he has medical qualifications, above the first aid certificate he is required to have as a firefighter, then he may have a better shot at becoming a paid firefighter since the New Zealand Fire Service provides medical support response to St John.

In the meantime, Julius is permanently attached to his pager – although it is mum’s job to get him down to the station when the siren goes off because he doesn’t have his driver’s licence.

“I think getting up at 2.40 in the morning is not every parent’s idea of fun but what you get back is worthwhile,” says Inger.

For instance, being obsessed with being a firefighter means he won’t be out drinking or taking drugs, so “we know we are not going to end up with a bogan child”.

And “the fire brigade is just awesome”, says Inger. “Family, by default, is in the fire brigade. We get invited to anything and everything that is happening. It is very inclusive.”

Of course there is always an element of risk in allowing your child to become a firefighter at the age of 16, she admits.

“He could get hurt and killed. But at least he is doing what he really loves, and how many people can say that?”

unning up and down Mt Karioi is nothing but extreme – let alone doing it twice.

Therefore, the organisers of the Raglan Karioi Trail (RKT) have this year included a 10km walk option for those who like the idea of a mountain race but are daunted by the running.

Francois Mazet, who started RKT in 2013, says the 10km walk has been offered so that more people will feel like they are able to participate.

Likewise, the 10km run, which includes a 900m ascent, was introduced last year as a shorter option of the 24km race that traverses the mountain twice.

Francois says it doesn’t matter if you run on the walk or walk on the run – “a few parts are too steep to run” – both the 24km and 10km courses are challenging.

The terrain for both includes rolling farmland, native bush, mud, roots, rocks, ladders and chains.

“It’s a mountain race … it’s hard

but it’s fun, the views are beautiful, and you need good shoes.

“I think the walk will be really popular.”

Registration for the RKT race on Saturday, December 10, has opened.

Francois says interest in the race has been building every year, including from running clubs.

“We have a registration from a person in England this year,” he says.

“There are people who have entered every year the race has been held.”

And proving that RKT is popular despite being incredibly tough, the last male runner in the 24km race last year was one of the first to register for 2016.

“It shows they like a challenge.”

RKT is also a family event, with a 2km Mini Karioi Trail race for children.

Mayoral candidate asks: Where’s the substance?

ayoral hopeful Brian Cathro has made his values very clear if he secures the top job in this coming Mayoral election, and says he is surprised at the lack of commitment or ideas coming from other candidates.

“It’s fascinating to hear others mutter all sorts of ideals, with no substance to back it up.”

Transparency has been mentioned by other candidates; but Cathro demonstrates how his common sense approach can remove the ‘us’ and ‘them’ stigma currently clouding the Waikato district.

“It’s only fair for communities to see where rates are collected; I would provide a graphical summary of where Advertorial

rates are collected from within the district, where they are spent and on what.

“There is nothing to hide within Council Chambers, I will support video recording council meetings and making substantial council business cases public.”

A hot topic in this year’s elections is economic development. Cathro says if future development is not done smartly there can be consequences.

“It’s about attracting industries to our district that create jobs in communities that need them. This cannot be water intensive, industry, though as there are important environmental goals we must stay true to.

“I would look within our own district by seeking partnerships with private organisations (i.e Waikato Tainui) to progress common training and employment goals for our people.”

When it comes to the environment, Cathro makes a serious stand.

“For Raglan and the wider district it is paramount that we prioritise spending and effort on safe and effective sewerage and water systems. I strongly oppose seabed mining in New Zealand and genetic engineering. This is an absolute no brainer for me.

“Waikato is in a prime location. The time is now to lobby central government for infrastructure funding to grow our communities. A prime example for this is a rail service between Auckland and Hamilton with stops at key Waikato District townships. On a smaller scale, I would be lobbying the regional council for increased bus services to Raglan and Huntly.”

Poo jokes aside, keeping a human alive and healthy turns out to be quite the journey. But what I discovered after our daughter’s breathing took a turn for the worst, in what was our first sign of whooping cough, is what an incredible group of health practitioners we have in our community.

Hours on the internet researching what I could do to support our daughter through it helped. But what really got us through was the knowledge and support of local and long-time practitioner homeopath Janis Beet. Once I had a plan to deal with our daughter’s illness, I went from a feeling of complete helplessness to one of empowerment.

And that’s where the Whaingaroa Whanau Health Workshop took seed. I don’t want to feel helpless in caring for our child, and no one I know does. So why not bring everyone together?

Spring is in the Air Waitetuna School Enviro Kids Club With the change of season and blossoms appearing, so are the children out at Waitetuna School. Each week we have an enthusiastic bunch, ready to get stuck in planting, weeding, and observing soil and seasons, building, cooking, laughing and learning!

This year we have built a worm farm that will last several decades; planted out a herb and vegetable garden, cooked kale chips and made herb and edible weed pesto (which the kids devoured!) Currently, we are in the process of establishing new garden beds to plant our spring gardens in. Seeds are sown and will be planted out early next term.

(Come down to WEC on a Wednesday to get your quality seeds) It’s so wonderful to work with such an inspired group of kids that recognize that importance and value of eating organic, locally produced kai and share the recipes of our cooking classes with their whanau! Keep being the garden warriors Waitetuna! You are excellent!

Farewell to a Fine Fellow

“Though the problems of the world are increasingly complex, the solutions remain embarrassingly simple” Bill Mollison.

This week saw the passing of Bill Mollison, well known to many in Whaingaroa and the world as a leader and father of Permaculture.

He was a biologist, scientist, researcher, teacher and one of the world’s most influential thinkers on community-led approaches to regenerative development.

Mollison spent decades observing and studying the ecosystems in Australian desert and rainforests noticing how plant species group themselves to mutually benefit and support each other. With this new knowledge he along with co- creator David Holmgren developed a new approach to agriculture, one which has spread and empowered communities world wide and in 1974 published Permaculture One, which started a quiet revolution, now not so quiet!

Permaculture is an integrated system of design, which encompasses not only agriculture, horticulture, architecture, and ecology, but also economic systems, land access strategies, and legal systems for businesses and communities.

“The Whaingaroa community has produced many graduates of permaculture design, some who have remained part of this inspiring community and continue to impart knowledge and skills, while others have flown off to spread the seeds of wisdom across the world. Rest in peace Bill, you have had a massive influence worldwide and your contribution has been extraordinary! I wonder if we could sort our sewage issue out here Raglan, by using the principles of permaculture? Possible I think!

Spring is in the air….it’s Compost Time!

Now’s a great time to buy bulk compost at Xtreme Zero Waste for your spring garden. Compost can be loaded onto your trailer on the yard, or delivered to your home. $35 per cubic metre and delivery charges do apply. Bags of compost are also available at $10 for 30 litres of super food, or $8 for 40 litres of carbon compost.

While you’re up here why not grab some carpet or cardboard for keeping those weeds at bay. We also have plenty of wood and corrugated iron for making some raised garden beds. No land space? Get your creative hats on and make some planter boxes.

Growing your own food or eating locally grown, not only has health benefits, but also means you are not eating industrialised food produced from oil. Composting at home is a great way of dealing with some of your food scraps, dirty paper, weeds and lawn clippings.

Organic waste in landfills creates methane, why spend valuable resources carting it to landfill, when we could be returning nutrients to the soil where they rightfully belong.
