It feels like summer is on the way and to celebrate the Yot Club has a big run of sick Saturday nights starting this Saturday with Laughton Kora's new band Tui. Tui have just played a succession of sold-out gigs with reggae legends Sons of Zion. Laughton describes his new band as "new funk" heavy grooves with wide-spaced out melodic vocals and a mix between originals and influential classics. Sounds like a lot of fun from Laughton, whose musical pedigree in Kora and recent touring with Fly My Pretties has seen him rated as one of New Zeland's finest talents.

Upcoming gigs until Labour weekend are Raglan favourites Summer Thieves returning on Saturday September 24, local funksters Mighty Mighty Saturday October 1, American surf, punk and garage outfit Guantanamo Baywatch on October 7 and Holly Smith playing October 8.

Finally on the last weekend before Labour Weekend, we have the return of dub reggae DJ Naram playing with MC SK Simeon.

Power cut hits Raglan businesses in the pocket

The generator that was bought in by Wel Networks to address power issues last week.

el Networks has encouraged Raglan business owners affected by last week’s power outage to contact its customer service team to discuss reimbursement options.

Power was lost to 50 connections in the CBD on Tuesday at about 10am, causing many businesses to close up shop for the day and lose money.

Some business owners spoken to by The Raglan Chronicle said they were without power for six hours – Wel Network’s Customer Promise is to “do our best to restore power to rural areas within six hours of an outage”.

“We’d encourage businesses affected by the outage to contact customer service team on 0800 800 935 so they can discuss reimbursement options as part of our Customer Promise,” said Wel Networks chief executive Garth Dibley.

A large generator had to be brought in on the back of a truck to power the affected areas, and it was sited next to SuperValue Raglan.

Businesses affected by the power outage were those in the block of Bow St and Wainui Rd, and in Bow St from Anexa vets to the SuperValue.

The Shack manager Sharnae Van der Helder said she closed early because of the power cut, and it had cost the cafe a day’s earnings and wages.

“It was totally a big deal. That’s at least $2000 in earnings and wages of another grand. And that’s just for one cafe!”

She said she had to ring the power company about three times in two hours before they could tell her that a generator was coming out, “but it was going to take a couple of hours to get there so we decided to close”.

“We tried to stick it out for about two hours. We did what we could serving cold drinks and muffins, counter food. We couldn’t really hold on any longer.”

She said the lunch period was the main income on a Tuesday. “We have a particular group coming in for coffee and lunch every Tuesday, so we lost that.”

SuperValue store manager Ross Jones said the supermarket was closed for two hours until 1pm.

“We stayed open for the first hour but then realised (the power) would be out for a bit longer.”

Mr Jones said the power was out at the supermarket between 10am and 1am, “which is a pretty busy time for us” and “we lost a bit of trade to the Four Square”.

Wainui Road Food Market owner Chandu Patel said the power was out in his shop for six hours but he stayed open. However, since most people don’t carry cash and eftpos was down, he lost business.

He said it was lucky it was winter so he didn’t lose any stock in the freezers.

“I was worried about the ice cream but

nothing happened. In summer it would only take two hours for it not to be good.”

Aga Turkish Cuisine owner Yassar Kaplan said he stayed open during the power cut but he had no customers because the lights were out and many of the other shops had closed, “so we looked closed”.

He said he would have lost about $700 in takings.

“I hope it doesn’t happen again.”

Raglan Chronicle editor Maki Nishiyama said the timing of the power outage coincided with work on the paper’s deadline.

“It was probably about 10 in the morning when the power went out … after an hour or so with no power we had to make the call to shift the office for the day. I heard the power was out for at least six hours so it was a good thing we made the call to work remotely because otherwise we probably wouldn’t have had a paper this week.”

Mr Dibley said the faults team identified the cause of the outage as “the failure of a high voltage underground cable joint due to ageing and water ingress”.

“The fault was extremely deep and required additional safety measures before work could commence so a generator was brought in to supply power for the affected area.”

Mr Dibbley said Wel Networks confirmed power was out to 50 Bow St connections at 11.04am, following calls from Raglan residents.

“By 14.20 on Tuesday the majority of the connections were operating under normal power supply, with four customers connected to the generator.”

He said the generator gave the team sufficient time to test, repair and commission new equipment in a safe manner, with work completed on Thursday evening.

“While we endeavour to provide a reliable power supply 24/7, power outages of this nature can occur for a number of reasons, such as cable strikes or joint failures (underground lines), motor vehicle incidents or storm events (overhead lines).

The challenge of this particular outage was the location and the unfortunate timing. We apologise for this disruption, which was clearly an inconvenience for the business community.”

Development of emergency response plan needs help from community-minded people Raglan residents need to become more community minded, a public meeting held by local Civil Defence Emergency Management heard last week.

Local Civil Defence Emergency Management Waikato co-ordinator Kelly Newell called the meeting in the supper hall of the town hall to harness interest in developing a Community Response Plan to be used in a state of emergency.

In total, 21 people attended, including Civil Defence staff, council staff and the usual suspects who attend community meetings in Raglan.

The low number of attendees was noted at the meeting. It was regarded by some that the response by a community of up to 5000 people was not good enough to co-ordinate an orchestrated response plan.

Ms Newell told the meeting that Civil Defence worked with people on the ground in a state of emergency to co-ordinate their needs.

She said it was a misconception that Civil Defence provided a team of foot soldiers to take care of everyone’s needs.

“We want people to share some of the actions that will need to take place in the event of an emergency situation.”

The community would always respond in an emergency, she said, but a co-ordinated, thought-out response worked better.

“Civil Defence needs information from the community to figure out what is going on.

“It is up to the community to take care of themselves.”

Neighbourhood Support Raglan coordinator Kathy Gilbert, who spoke at the meeting, said it was important for residents to get to know their neighbours.

“How many children, elderly people?

What is the skillset in your street? Doctors, nurses, ditch diggers ...”

Ms Gilbert said it had been an absolute struggle trying to get people involved in Neighbourhood Support in the past two years.

“What we need is to think about how can we stimulate our community to take some responsibility for themselves and their neighbourhood.”

She said there was a new dynamic in Raglan where many young residents now worked in Hamilton and were taking no responsibility for anyone apart from themselves.

“We need to look at the ‘we’ rather than the ‘I’.

“People are not particularly concerned of being of service to others.”

Bob MacLeod, who is leading the charge regarding Raglan’s Community Response Plan, said in the event of an emergency, Raglan would likely have to fend for itself for three days without any help.

He said the Community Response Plan was a methodology of what Raglan would do in a crisis.

For example, where would 1000 people staying at the camp be rehoused if they had to be evacuated, or where would people assemble in an emergency situation?

The plan was also about being prepared as a family, including taking care of pets; how to communicate with others; ensuring you have enough food and water, torches, and petrol for the car; checking that your neighbours are OK. “It’s something you should be thinking about today, not tomorrow.

“There will be no help coming to Raglan.

We have to survive on our own.”

The chorus is directed by Jill Rodgers and competes each year at the National Barbershop Convention, which this year is being held in Blenheim’s new convention centre in early October.

The chorus is currently working on this years’ competition package which brings together both music and choreography.

Although four-part harmony is primarily the repertoire of these men, they have also been branching out into choral work for some variation.

Mighty River Harmony will present a top-quality show at St Paul’s Collegiate Chapel on Saturday, September 17 at 7.30 pm, where they will perform, along with guest artists The Musical Island Boys, a quartet based in Wellington and Australia, who won the International Gold Medal in the United States in 2014.

The Musical Island Boys will comprise the second half of the show. These

young men are regarded worldwide in a cappella circles as a star act!

Gold medal winning quartet 4th Avenue will also perform.

Mighty River Harmony will present a repertoire of their most loved works, including their new choral piece, Mozart’s Ave Verum, also a favourite among choral audiences.

This concert is a must-see for those who love harmony singing. Who knows? You might catch the bug and want to join up! The chorus is always looking to grow membership and let's all remember that music is a great way to exercise the brain.

A Very Greedy Tale, the latest publishing venture from Raglan illustrator Margery Fern and her author sister, Jennifer Somervell, is a story from their childhood of a couple of naughty pigs obsessed with food.

Launch-goers were treated to a re-enactment of how – in anticipation of getting a shock – the loveable pet porkers would crouch down and squeal before charging an electric fence to get to an approaching breakfast bucket of milk or raid a nearby vege garden.

Two pupils from Waitetuna School, where Margery is principal, donned piggy costumes and provided the appropriate noises while a co-opted corner of the audience provided the “zap-zap” sound of the electric shocks that, according to the story, had one pig squealing “from the top of her tail to the tips of her pink trotters”.

about how the electric fence came about.

John Gallagher, whose association with Raglan goes back to 1945 and who has a weekender in Long St, gave a brief presentation of how in the mid-1930s, his late father, Bill ,invented first a low-amperage battery or energiser and then the electric fence itself.

He revealed Bill tested his invention by giving himself a series of shocks before going on to found the Hamilton-based Gallagher Group to manufacture and market the product.

A Very Greedy Tale, described by Margery and Jennifer as “a great tribute to pigs”, is the fourth in their Tales from the Farm series based on the two sisters’ experiences growing up on a Hawke’s Bay farm in the 1960s and 70s.

Production of the series has been very much a family affair, with Margery’s graphic designer daughter, Ezra Andre, pulling text and illustrations together for each book.

Other family members helping out with the latest launch included another daughter, Janet, who made pink piggy cookies to go with the nibbles and wine, while Margery’s husband, Rene, and their eldest son, Josiah, played their guitars on the arts centre’s front steps.

n any given day, the scene at Shack is something out of a movie. Whether it’s a buzzing holiday weekend or a rainy Tuesday morning, the vibe is something most people only dream of experiencing.

If you happen to be sitting at The Shack one day and you have headphones with you, pick an upbeat song, turn the music up until that’s all you can hear, and you might see it too.

But it’s not just about the scene.

It’s the smell of the coffee drifting out on to the street. It’s the taste of the fresh baked savoury muffins, or even the corn fritters, paired with fresh greens and a side of free-range bacon.

It’s the scene and smells that lured me in to try out The Shack for dinner last month.

To say I didn’t have high expectations would be a bit of a lie, but when the daytime menu proves itself time and again – not to mention having an award-winning chef in the kitchen – I felt pretty justified.

After I sat down and soaked up the menu, I called my brother and asked/told him and his partner to come and join me.

Little did they know it was only so I could try more things on the menu.

I don’t know if it’s fair to try and describe the flavours of the food that showed up on our table throughout the night. Rumour has it that Justin will be changing the menu each month, so you might have the misfortune of never experiencing what we had, but the surprise makes for a fun and unique experience.

Our experience started with dumplings wrapped up with tofu, kimchi, ginger and coriander, followed by three cheese gratin cauliflower, perfectly crisped.

Then there was pork belly, paired with an artichoke puree and, if I recall correctly, tasting a bit of apple. Definitely one of those, "don’t lick the plate in public" moments.

But the cherry on top, figuratively speaking, was the meze dip plate with house-made hummus, olives, dukkah and flat bread, and then cheese rolls. Cheese rolls? Are you kidding me? My brother

and I looked at each other when the cheese rolls came out and I think we were mentally 12 again. Cheese rolls were a big thing of our past – a nice craving we think about sometimes. So to see them on the menu was nothing short of satisfying. And the sherry

dressing on the side was the perfect ending to the flavourful meal.

It’s a treat to have The Shack lit up at night, even if it’s just one night a month.

If you’re keen to taste a plethora of smells and be a part of your very own foodie-esque movie, pop by for dinner at The Shack this tomorrow (Friday) from 6pm. But get there early. It’s first come first serve and, if you’re like me, you’re going to want to slowly savour every last bite.

If you miss out, don’t fret. The daytime menu is sure to hit the spot and dinner will be back on next month!

There were 488 firefighters who competed in Climb for Kids, kitted out in full uniform weighing 25kg.

So far, $343,488 has been raised for the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute.

Leanna says her and Dan’s next goal is to race in New York in March in commemoration of the fallen firefighters in the September 11 terrorist attacks.

“We will be racing up 72 floors carrying the tags of the fallen firefighters from 9/11.”

aglan’s firefighting couple took their prowess to Australia recently, climbing 28 floors of the Crown Metropol Hotel in Melbourne.

Leanna Mills placed third in the open women’s race of “Climb for the Kids” with a time of 5:25 minutes, while Dan Mills was 17th in the men’s race in a time of 5:06 minutes.

Earlier this year, Leanna and Dan each won their respective age groups in the Firefighter of Steel category in the Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge in Auckland, climbing 55 flights of stairs.

Leanna says the Melbourne race on September 3 was awesome but a lot shorter than the Sky Tower Challenge.

However, because it was shorter race it was also a faster race, and the build up of lactic acid was so great that competitors were unable to move for some time after crossing the finish line.

A Q+A with coaches of local kids sports teams. This week we spoke to Jardon Wilson.

Q: Who do you coach and what is your role in the Raglan Rugby club?

I am the coach of the Raglan junior rugby 8th Grade team and Junior Club President.

How did the season go for the team?

Our season just ended. It was a very successful season with only one loss.

How long have you been coaching for?

This would be my fifth year.

Why did you decide to put your hand up to coach?

Ha - I turned up twice as a supportive parent and that in itself got me the job. I quickly grew to enjoy it.

What are the highlights of coaching a team?

No. 1 is watching my own children grow in the sport every week and No. 2 is watching the teams bond and form comradery.

What are the challenges?

Time management with juggling business, family, training and games.

What is your coaching style?

We have a defensive tactic. Tries are easily scored however stopping tries is what wins games.

Is it all about winning?

Ha, I'm old school and I like a win and I know the kids like a win, however we were defeated once this year in our grand final and knowing we gave everything 100% plus it was still a great feeling and sense of achievement. I am an advocate of always trying your best and leaving it all on the field - this in turn made our grand final loss easy as every player did their best so as a team we were proud to walk off the field that day.

Was sport important to you growing up?

Yes, I come from a family that is highly competitive in everything we do. I grew up playing rugby, representing Raglan. I was coached by Brett Millward who not only was a coach but a mentor in life.

How do you think team sports benefit our young ones today?

I believe team sports have a huge impact on our youth as this builds lifetime friendships and relationships outside the family unit.

Keeps our kids busy - kids in sport stay out of court.

Best piece of advice you could give to parents?

If you feel you have the time then get involved and support your kids' sport life. You may well enjoy a coaching role one day.

Are there any changes or goals for the Club in 2017?

Our aim is to retain the junior Raglan rugby players so that we have a strong future for our club, starting with developing under19's and senior teams again. The junior rugby numbers are doing great. For the last five years we have had over 100 children involved. In 2016 we had 140 players (nine teams) The difficulty is getting the players to return for senior rugby.

Ideally, for our junior club, we would like to arrange the draw so that all teams play at home grounds on the same weekend and we are not split between Raglan and Hamilton.

This will help with fundraising and creating a day of it - perhaps leading into a senior game in the afternoon.

Long term, we would like to create better facilities and clubrooms, also maybe an indoor arena to enable training in all weather conditions and environments.

I'd also like to re-plant the seed to build a Raglan community sports hub, where all sporting codes unify in the one domain and plan future sporting resources such as fields, clubrooms, an indoor complex and facilities.

Ideally, we bring all interested clubs together and support each other. It would be great to see night indoor sporting facilities accessible in our community for year round sport.

What are you doing to encourage more people to play the sport for the Raglan club? We keep our club fees very low at $25 per player for the whole year and $40 for a family. We rely heavily on sponsorship and volunteering from our parents.

How did the prizegiving and friendly rugby games go at the club on Saturday?

We had a fun day joined with our prizegiving and invited the netball community to play as well as having two friendly rugby games (12th grade and seniors versus out of town teams). We had the senior club supporting with providing food and the club bar was open. This was a very successful day with a wide group of supporters and sports involved.

The aim is if we join the committees we will have more hands which should in turn make less work for all and clubs with mutual goals.

Our smaller clubs do struggle by themselves so the more we can join our efforts the easier and more successful our events should be.

Raglan Gym: Working out with someone else can help you I f you’re struggling with your motivation, or you simply want to squeeze more out of every workout you do, then one of the smartest moves you can make is to get a workout buddy or personal trainer.
