Dear Editor Getting the Red Tape Blues Lorenzen Bay is my nearest access to the upper harbour part of the sea I love, so what’s happening down there is very important to me.

It has recently improved a great deal and new inhabitants appear to be the people to get the credit. A new sea wall has been developed which greatly facilitates boats dropping off people around high tide, or staying alongside the wall.

Improvement to the steps will make it much easier to get in and out after a swim. The old steps were very rough on my feet.

You might think that the Waikato District Council were behind this initiative. I have heard that in fact they were not willing to authorise this improvement to Raglan’s facilities, and the obvious value of the development to Raglan’s attractiveness to inland centres of population and visitors from overseas.

It makes me wonder about Waikato civil servants.

Perhaps they are so afraid of getting something wrong they

find it safer to say no. I might be being unfair. Possibly they are so firmly tied to their office chairs that they can’t move. What are they tied with?

Red tape of course.

Why are they tied? To prevent their overspending our rates. Better keep them on but teach them to say "yes" more often.

And when they say yes they could digress from presenting a large bill as compensation for having to think. The various bodies involved also need to note that in a consultation feedback from Tainui hapū, environmental committees, Angeline Greensil, there is full support for the changes which have been made to improve and strengthen the Lorenzen Bay seawall. It is unwise and impolite to annoy the people of the land.

Virtual health service launched

aglan residents are being encouraged to sign up to a virtual health service that offers free online, after-hours medical advice and consultations.

The Waikato District Health Board has launched a six-month pilot of an online outof-hours doctors service for people who can’t get to a doctor easily in the evenings and weekends. It is part of their Virtual DHB initiative, which uses online platform and smartphone app HealthTap to also give patients access to health information, advice and online consultations with hospital specialists.

West Coast Health Charitable Trust chairman Fiona Stephens, who as a physiotherapist for Waikato DHB has signed up for Virtual DHB as a clinician and a patient, says the service is an “amazing thing” for people who live out in the “wops”.

Benefits include time and hassle saved, no more long journeys for short hospital appointments where a physical examination isn’t needed, access to a doctor afterhours and in weekends for health issues, access to your own medical record, and a huge amount of doctor-approved health information at your fingertips.

Fiona says what she hears often from patients who live in rural communities is that they go to all the effort of travelling to hospital, finding a park and waiting for their appointment only to find that their consult takes five minutes.

“It can take the best part of three hours for a five-minute consult.”

Using the HealthTap app, patients can ask doctors questions by text, audio call or have a virtual consultation, including afterhours.

The online doctors give comprehensive advice, diagnose and prescribe if necessary, by sending a fax to your local pharmacy.

HealthTap also dispenses “proper medical advice, rather than from Dr Google”, says Fiona.

“I think that everybody should give it a try and see how it works for them.

“The more people that do it, I really think it will push all doctors to see that patients expect it as a service.”

West Coast Health Charitable Trust is looking at ways it can support the Virtual DHB, such as helping those who might not be technologically savvy or own their own smartphone to access the service.

Business as usual as Raglan BP fits latest pumping technology B

P 2go Raglan’s new site manager is asking customers to be patient during some major six-figure developments prior to the summer rush.

Manager Cala Eriepa says starting on Monday, the BP will close some of its pumping bays as three weeks of work begins on replacing the fuel dispensers.

The latest pump technology is being installed in the forecourt. The new pump stations will offer all three fuels on both sides and, altogether, there will be twice as many hoses – from the current 12 to 24.

“There will be some disruptions,” says Cala, of the installation of the new pumps.

“Hopefully people can be patient as we go though this change.

“We will have forecourt attendants managing traffic flow and assisting where required.”

In November, work will begin on refitting the shop.

“It’s going to be flash.”

etired educator Garry Blayney can remember his three years in the early 60s in charge of what was then Raglan District High School like it was yesterday.

That despite now being 92 years old – and most likely the oldest living headmaster of what has since become the area school and which will celebrate its 150th jubilee this coming Labour Weekend.

Then again, running a school that’s inconveniently split in two is not an experience anyone would quickly forget.

The lively nonagenarian told the Chronicle last week of how back in 1962 – when he was promoted to Raglan from his previous posting in northern Hokianga – the district high school was operating on two sites, with its younger pupils still being taught in the original Stewart St school building.

But by the end of that year the old and new had amalgamated at the current Norrie Ave location – and “what a difference it made”, recalls Garry, with no more traipsing up and down the hill two or three times a day.

Still, there were plenty of ongoing building problems to be dealt with around the new school.

For Instance, The Kauroa block, which had been transferred from Te Mata

and placed among the four or five new classrooms, “leaked vigorously”, despite having been refurbished.

“This was the baby boom … we had to battle on,” he laughs of what was then a dire situation for a school which had somehow to house about 250 primary and 100 secondary pupils.

It turned out that the corrugated roofing iron had been placed upside down and the work had to be completely re-done.

“So for a time we had to put up with having carpenters and sub-contractors on site,” Garry says.

It wasn’t just the disruption to classes, either: wolfwhistling was less a taboo back then and Garry wryly observes that “builders and school students are not a great mix”.

Garry returned to the area school for a visit about five years ago and was “staggered” at the number of buildings now on the grounds. “I realised that (the work in my time) was just the first of many building developments,” he says.

While he was headmaster there was also a lot of fundraising underway to build the school pool, he remembers. Not that his own family ever reaped the benefits of the “endless” bottle-selling; the baths, as they were called then, did not become a reality until a few years later.

In the meantime, school swimming was conducted in the tide, down by the Kopua walkbridge.

Garry and his now late wife, Shirley, who also taught at the school, had two young children at the time, Neil and Jan, and lived just across the road in the designated headmaster’s house.

“We were very happy indeed with their education at Raglan District High,” says Garry of the couple’s children. That’s where they got their “grounding” before the family moved on to other schools, from Invercargill in the deep south to Wainuiomata, Carterton, Wellington and Cambridge.

Garry, who currently lives in his own unit at a Cambridge retirement village, says he’s very much looking forward to the area school jubilee this month. He’ll be there with both his daughter, who’s coming up from Wellington, and son from Auckland.

He especially hopes to catch up with Pauline Sweetman (nee Ripia), an assistant principal and careers advisor who was a student during his time at Raglan and has taught there for decades.

Garry has some other vivid memories of early 1960s Raglan. He recalls arriving in town to “this furore … of the county council wanting to cut down palms in Bow St”.

Local identity Connie Stevens, who ran the bakery, chained herself to one of the iconic trees in protest.

“I think she was one of the original environmentalists,” Garry observes.

And he remembers Eva Rickard as a “brilliant telephone exchange operator” around the time she was becoming an activist for Māori land rights. He also credits Eva’s sister, Ivy Fitzpatrick, a teacher at the school, with liaising with local Māori families and incorporating some te reo into the syllabus.

That was quite a big deal as it came soon after an era when “you got tanned if you spoke Māori in schools”, he recalls.

Garry’s genuinely pleased to see how what he believes must have been one of New Zealand’s first public schools has turned out today.

Successive principals and teachers have achieved “a tremendous number of things so impossible in my time”, he marvels, citing initiatives like the fostering of the Māori language, environmental education and the establishment, about 20 years ago, of the school’s surf academy.

Fallenfront bring Good Times to CBD

aglan based online streetwear R retailer Fallenfront has been steadily positioning themselves as one of the country’s leading online stores for men’s apparel, footwear and accessories. This week, just in time for summer, they have opened a unique concept store in Raglan’s CBD, Fallenfront presents the Good Times store.

The new project offers a collaborative space for key brands to showcase their range in a unique space for a few months at a time with each brand creating a fresh vibe over the duration of their installation. The new space will also be offering womenswear as well as menswear.

Fallenfront's director, Raglan born and bred Steve Crowhurst is pumped about the brand's first foray into bricks and mortar retailing with an approach that is far from traditional.

“The Good Times idea was born from the growing number of people living in Raglan and the increasing flow of visitors we see coming to our home town and the desire to offer them

an experience that is different and special, right from the product we are retailing, to the store fit out and overall presentation,” says Steve. For their launch, Good Times have teamed up with one of New Zealand’s best loved and iconic streetwear brands, Huffer. With their recent ‘Locals’ campaign and acclaimed closing show at New Zealand Fashion Week, Huffer is a key player in New Zealand Fashion and has supported Fallenfront since day one.

“Fallenfront has been a long term consistent customer of ours and we are so proud to represent our brand through Good Times over the endless Raglan summer. We are looking forward to showing our respect for the locals in a magical iconic town, a town close to the heart of Huffer,” comments, regular visitor of Raglan and founder of Huffer, Steve Dunstan.

For Steve Crowhurst, the new bricks and mortar store has another layer of significance. In a sense, the cycle has come full circle for Steve and his family.

Steve’s dad, Graham Crowhurst (Crowie senior), had a hand in developing one of Raglan’s

first surfboard shops, Wilson Surfboards, when Don Wilson moved his shop to Raglan in 1973. Wilson Surfboards was first located where the current INDI’s and Hong Kong Kitchen are. Don had teamed up with Graham and Kevin McKell, a pair whose influence inspired the shape and designs of many of the boards the team was producing.

Graham is also excited to see his son's new shop come to fruition.

“I’m proud and very impressed with the look of the store, they’ve done a good job,” he says.

“I was one of three who owned and ran the business back then. I looked after finish coating and sanding. The store itself definitely wasn't as flash as the new Good Times shop but back then we thought it was flash.

“The difference with us was that manufacturing surfboards was the main part of the business and we had a few clothes for sale in the front, but it was pretty much all about the boards.

“The clothes usually got covered in foam dust and resin so we ended up wearing it ourselves. Raglan in the 70s was so quiet, there weren’t the people around to support it like now.”

Having seen Raglan change over the years, Graham also adds that “fashion now is way more educated, stylish, and not as grunge. The cuts and style are better. Back then we were basic: board shorts, jeans, sweatshirts and T-shirts. The designs and trends weren’t too unlike today, there were abstract designs, motifs etc. but we had some day glow orange kit that was pretty out there, no where near as classic as it is now.”

With Huffer’s men’s and women’s spring/summer installation currently in the shop as well as accessories by Adidas, New Blance, Atlas, Moscot and Herschel, the new space has been fitted out by local designer William Worsp (WRW & Co) using rustic

and recycled local timber and complemented with artworks from local artist Sam Mathers.

“Our next installation in the new year with be our 'Fallenfront presents Good Times' concept where we showcase product from the Fallenfront webstore.

“This is exciting because we’ll be bringing brands to Raglan which haven’t been offered here before like menswear and womenswear from Thing Thing, JanSport, Dickies, Stussy, On & On, and lots more.

“The idea is to keep things fresh for both locals, visitors and ourselves,” says Steve.

Steve and his team have worked hard getting the new space ready in time for October and hope that locals can enjoy a new retail experience.

“I’ve always had awesome staff working with me at Fallenfront, and I think it's pretty important to have good crew around when most of our lives are spent at work. We all work hard, trust each other to get the job done and enjoy a beer together at the end of the day - which is what it's all about.

"With the webstore and the new town shop, it would be great to continue to grow the business creating as many job opportunities for the Raglan people as possible,” says Steve.

The two talk and laugh a lot, so having a gallery attached to their workspace means they

end up engaging with their customers a lot, too.

“It’s nice to be in touch with people. We spend a lot of the day chatting,” says Hayley, who started Monster in 2002 and who had always worked from home until moving into the space in the old dairy co-op earlier this year.

She and Karla, who joined Monster in 2012 as a business and creative partner, moved into

the workshop in February but the gallery has only had its doors open to the public for a couple of months.

Karla has worked in this space before, Hayley reveals. “She did a joinery apprenticeship in here.”

“I was making cups of tea and sweeping the floor,” Karla says. “I just needed a job because the boys had started school.”

“But then that led to an apprenticeship,” prompts Hayley.

Karla tries to explain, it gets confusing, ends up sounding like a soap opera, doesn’t have any relevance to the new gallery space and much hilarity ensues.

“You can’t write that. You can’t write that!” Hayley laughs, and takes charge of the PR. “Having a gallery area attached is something we never had before and that is nice because we get feedback from customers,” says Hayley.

“People are drawn to come in because of the atmosphere. It’s gone from being a maleoriented workshop to quite a feminine space, with all our fairy lights.

“You get to know what is going on in Raglan, meet all the visitors. People find us just by wandering around.

“It has been great for business. And, ohhh, here is a good quote: There is quite a movement going on in the world at the moment, whether it is food or art; that people coming in here and seeing us make what they are going to buy – it’s quite different from buying something imported from overseas or from a gift shop. They like the story behind the work.”

Hayley looks at Karla.

“Am I talking too much? You say something, now.”

The Monster Company creates work from clay, wood and mixed media.

It’s full-on production work, fulfilling orders for ceramic hearts and tiles and wooden men and birds, and more, from 34 galleries and gift shops throughout New Zealand.

Once a month the orders come in, and a lot of it is clay work. The two use slip moulds, and no one piece is ever the same.

“We muck about with clay all day,” Karla carries on the conversation while preparing a glaze and Hayley makes coffee.

“We do Monster for four days a week and we do our own work one day a week.

Monster is our bread and butter, and then we get to make whatever we feel like.”

For Karla, that’s ceramic jewellery, small plant holders and ring stands. And “signs and bowls and puppy dogs’ tails”, she sings.

Hayley points out that I may have noticed that Karla is socially awkward.

Karla snorts and bends over doubled with laughter.

“I attract weirdos,” Karla admits, coming up for air.

Hayley, who also paints but not much lately, says she is obsessed with clay at the moment, and trying her hand at making “big, organic, hand-built vessels”.

The two bounce ideas off each other for Monster’s productions.

And their sentences bounce off each other, too.

Hayley: We really like each other …

Karla: … No, we don’t fight, we basically just talk shit all day … it’s like working with your sister …

Hayley: … And we make each other laugh. It’s like working with your sister but without fighting … and we have nearly started to finish each other’s sentences.”

To start the weekend, however, we have Portlandian surf rockers Guantanamo Baywatch playing on Friday. With a new album and an extra guitarist they are chocfull of excitement about their first ever trip to New Zealand.

WAIKATO DISTRICT COUNCIL MEDIA RELEASE 3 OCTOBER 2016 DO YOU WANT SHOPS TO OPEN ON EASTER SUNDAY? Waikato District Council wants to know what you think about shops being open on Easter Sunday.

Due to a recent change in legislation councils can now develop a policy that will allow shops to open on Easter Sunday. At the moment shops can’t open on Easter Sunday unless they meet strict criteria.

“We want to know what people think,” says General Manager Strategy and Support, Tony Whittaker. “Is this something our communities want?”

If developed, the policy would allow shops in the Waikato district to open but it would not be able to specify any criteria or restrictions, such as types of shops, hours or purposes.

“We are asking people to tell us what they think by 31 October. We’ll be out talking to our businesses as well as visiting local market days to find out what people think. People can also go online to provide their feedback.

“If our communities tell us they want shops to be open on Easter Sunday, we will develop a draft policy. We’ll then give our communities an opportunity to provide feedback before it’s adopted in time for Easter 2017.”
