Waikato Regional Council scourge elected

Newly elected WRC councillor Fred Lichtwark.

W

haingaroa Harbour Care manager Fred Lichtwark has scraped in as a Waikato Regional councillor by just 20 votes. Mr Lichtwark clawed his lead of 4483 over nominee Tony Armstrong, who has served two terms as councillor, in the count of special votes and a recount of ordinary votes. Mr Armstrong was ahead of Mr Lichtwark in the preliminary results for the Waikato General Constituency area by 70 votes. Jennie Hayman, who was also elected as a Waikato area councillor, got 5087 votes.

Mr Lichtwark said he was surprised by the result. “For one, that is because of the Maori vote – I was more popular with the Maori community but I did not appear on the Maori Electoral Roll (voting papers).” Mr Lichtwark, who stood for council with a sole focus on water quality, has a colourful past with the regional council, so his election may raise a few eyebrows among staff. Earlier this year, WRC chief executive Vaughan Payne had “terminated” the council’s relationship with him following his “abusive” criticism of the West Coast Zone catchment plan and willow eradication in Ohautira Rd. In a letter to Mr Lichtwark, My Payne said he had instructed staff to have no further interaction with him, and “no further invitations be provided to you to provide planting support for projects under their supervision”. Of his election on to council, Mr Lichtwark said his sole focus would be on the environment and making cost savings. “All that stuff doesn’t matter, it is water under a bridge. “My main interest is getting trees in the ground.” Mr Payne told the Raglan Chronicle he would support Mr Lichtwark in his role as a councillor. “Everyone comes into council to serve the public and to make a positive difference.

Fred is really effective in his current community roles, and has community support, and I’m also here to support him to be successful as a councillor. He has a clear passion for the environment. “We expect healthy debate in the council chambers – differences of opinion aren’t a bad thing. In fact, differences of opinion and debate help us arrive at better results. However, there is an expectation that councillors treat each other and staff with respect at all times and this is agreed in the council code of conduct.” In other results, incumbent Waikato District Mayor Allan Sanson has been elected for a third term. Mr Sanson received 5383 votes, ahead of Wally Hayes (3453), Brian Cathro (2010), Donna Nichols (1708) and John Deacon (874). Lisa Thomson, who was on the Raglan Community Board, was elected unopposed as Raglan Ward councillor. Ms Thomson also stood for the Raglan Community Board and received the most votes (746) in that election. However, because she has been declared Raglan Ward councillor, the next polling candidate, Alan Vink, was elected on to the board. Mr Vink was formerly the community board’s chairman. The community board results, in order, are: Rangi Kereopa 659; Bob MacLeod 643; PJ Haworth 633; Gabrielle Parson 549; Tony Oosten 449 and Alan Vink 343. Inger Vos

New purpose-built medical centre closer to reality – West Coast Health T

he owners of West Coast Health Clinic made the “difficult decision” to sign up with a private developer for a new medical centre because they were running out of space and time. The clinic and the West Coast Health Charitable Trust had shared a vision of a community-owned and operated medical clinic large enough to house a range of healthcare organisations, but “obtaining sufficient funding proved to be a demanding and slow process”, said Dr Mike Loten, who owns West Coast Health along with Dr Fiona Bolden. The trust, which had been working hard for two years to raise enough capital to buy land and build such a facility, pulled the pin on Project Build It following West Coast

Health’s decision to go with the private developer. “It's clear to anyone using our clinic that we have run out of space,” said Dr Loten. “The counselling service was even kind enough this year to move into a studio room in the rear car park, allowing us an extra room for doctor consults. We need a bigger building. “With limited time left on our lease at 12 Wallis St, Fiona and I made the difficult decision this month to sign a contract with a private developer to build the clinic at 9 Wallis Street, a site that has current resource consent for a medical centre, with a target completion date of December 2017. “We fully support the West Coast Health Charitable Trust in their goal of supporting community-oriented healthcare in the Whaingaroa area and sincerely thank

them for the work they have put into Project Build It.” West Coast Health practice manager Michelle Meenagh said the clinic would be taking West Coast Counselling and possibly Pathlab with them in their move across the road. She said the new site was off the road and would have enough parking for 17 vehicles. In the past 10 years, staff numbers at West Coast Health have increased from 10 to 17 and enrolled patient numbers have increased from 3000 to 4850. However, the number of walk-ins also rise in the summer season so a locum is employed then to help cope with patient numbers. The new clinic will be leased off the developer. Inger Vos

Works begins on strengthening and widening stretch of Wainu Rd ork is about to start on W reconstructing the stretch of Wainui Rd between Wainui Bush Reserve and Te Ahiawa Rd.

Waikato District Council service delivery acting general manager Chris Clarke said the cost of repairing defects on that section of road had increased to a point where reconstruction was the most economical option. The new road will be strengthened and

widened to improve safety for traffic and cyclists. “Existing materials in the road will be recycled and combined with new materials to provide the required strength. The road will be surfaced with a chip seal.” The six-week project is due to be completed by mid-November, weather allowing. The roading team will ensure the site is in a good, free-flowing usable condition over Labour Weekend. The work will be split in two parts to

ensure as little disruption as possible to residents and road users. The aim is to work on the upper section from Te Ahiawa Road to east of Ngarunui Beach Rd first before then progressing to the bridge by the Wainui Bush Reserve. Mr Clarke said resurfacing of other parts of Wainui Rd beyond the Te Ahiawa Rd intersection was planned for in the next few years, and council’s maintenance teams would also carry out periodic maintenance. Celia, left, with Pauline in the school office as they sort through the registrations.

P

auline Sweetman will have more memories to draw on than most when it comes to celebrating the Raglan Area School 150th jubilee this Labour Weekend.

After attending the school from the age of five – the first of the 13 children in her family to do so – she then returned as a firstyear teacher by the time she was 21. And barring the odd short break, she’s been there ever since. “I taught my youngest sister,” Pauline (nee Ripia) reveals as she talks about her now 40-year career at the school. There were only spells off in dribs and drabs to have her own two children because her parents and mother-in-law were nearby to lend a hand. When the Chronicle caught up with the area school institution last Saturday, it was fittingly at the school. She was busy sorting through – with fellow longtime studentturned-teacher Celia Risbridger – the more than 300 registrations for this weekend’s reunion. “I think that’s why I got the rego job,” Pauline laughs of the lengthy lists of names of former students and teachers she holds in her head, adding how she’s often referred to now as “Google Pauline”. Recognising a multitude of names from days gone by as she works through registrations has been nothing short of

fantastic, Pauline says. The task has been “a pleasure and a joy”. She picks out as an example Molly Beddingfield (nee Blanchard), the mother of two pop star siblings who was on her way back to Raglan this week from her home in London. “And there’s a few from Australia, too,” Pauline adds. It’s wonderful to see how many people are taking the time to travel and reconnect with their old school community, Pauline says. “That’s the good thing about a reunion.” She and Celia (nee Bath) have already been to the school’s 100th and 125th jubilees, and the two 60-somethings joke that maybe they won’t quite make the 175th. Not that they show signs of slowing down. Pauline for her part is adamant she won’t even think about retiring while still enjoying a job in which she is a mix of teacher, an assistant principal and a careers adviser. “And I also loved my own school days here (as a student),” she adds. “They were fun.” She rattles off games played back then like knucklebones, skipping and cards. There was softball and tennis at lunchtimes – games Pauline doesn’t see happening spontaneously any more, only in organised sports periods. “We even had one lovely teacher who

took us for gymnastics on the tennis court in our lunch hour,” she recalls of a time before the school hall and gymnasium was built. Lunchtimes in her days as a pupil began with 15 minutes – seated – to eat lunch, talk to friends and swap sandwiches before being allowed to go and play. “And allergies weren’t heard of … no one was allergic to peanut butter!” Pauline reckons communication by talking is the key to the lifelong friendships she still enjoys today, more than 50 years on. “Now they seem to be more interested in their electronic devices (during breaks),” she groans of modern-day students. Students wore a school uniform back in her day, Pauline recalls. The girls’ outfit then was a black gym frock in winter with white blouse, navy tie, beret and black stockings; and a blue pinafore in summer with short-sleeved blouse, a panama hat and blue Roman sandals. She reckons uniforms were “good (economically) for people like me from big families. My mum was a seamstress and only the blouse, sandals and panama hat were bought.” Pauline’s seen more than a few principals come and go, and is looking forward to catching up with 92-year-old Garry Blayney from the early 60s. He remembers her as one of his first Maori students to achieve the old School Certificate qualification in what was then the fifth form (today’s year 11). Another ex principal she’ll share some memories with is Clive Hamill, who is now Melville High School’s principal and who preceded current area school principal Malcolm Cox. Then there are contemporaries from big families like her own attending. For instance, three of the nine Gibbison children who started at Kauroa School and continued at Raglan District High – as it was called back then – have registered. In fact, they carried on using their original classroom as the building was moved to the high school where it remains today, and is known as the Kauroa block. The reunion kicks off with a “meet and mingle” tomorrow (Friday) night, and Pauline’s expecting to answer many times over the question she’s most often asked: “Are you still here, teaching, at Raglan Area School?” Yes, and still enjoying it, will be her emphatic response. Surf lifesaving season kicks off this weekend at Ngarunui Beach aglan volunteer lifeguards will R hit the beach on Saturday, as the 2016-2017 surf lifesaving season kicks off in the northern region.

“Enjoy the beach with us,” is the message from the Surf Life Saving Northern region (SLSNR) team that looks after 17 beaches, including Raglan’s Ngarunui Beach. Speaking at the organisation’s season launch at Muriwai on Sunday, SLSNR Operations Manager Adam Wooler said the region’s lifeguards were totally committed to one objective – “to help beachgoers enjoy their time in the water.” Mr Wooler said the “swim between the flags” message might have become a timeworn phrase “but it’s still the best way to ensure you enjoy your time in the water”. “We’ve never had a drowning inside the flagged area, so we’re saying to the public – join us there and enjoy your swim.”

Patrolled beaches were the best option for families looking for a day of fun at the beach, said Wooler, who joined the organisation in September from an extensive career in surf life saving in the UK and Australia. “Our volunteers are incredibly well prepared, trained and committed to supporting the public. But they are our insurance that if anything goes wrong for a swimmer, we can intervene to avoid a tragedy. We’d much rather the public didn’t put themselves at risk, and the key to that is swimming in the safe areas, especially when ocean conditions are heavy, (as they often are in Raglan).” SLSNR chief executive Matt Williams said the organisation was moving into a new phase, involving improvements to how it operated on the beach, within clubs and financially. “We want to change the way we do things to focus more on delivering our core service – which is to provide a safe and

enjoyable beach experience for the public,” said Mr Williams. “Our challenge is to do that sustainably under the current funding culture. We’re still seen in some quarters as just a charity or a sport, and we are those things. But we’re also and established and essential emergency service. In June this year, the Waikato Regional Council agreed to establish a fund of $630,000 for emergency rescue services in its territory, including $354,000 to go towards SLSNR. Last year the weekday paid lifeguard service in Raglan, which usually runs from early December to early February, was at risk because SLSNR was short $41,000 for operations at Ngarunui Beach and Sunset Beach in Port Waikato. A generous benefactor and Waipa District Council stumped up for the shortfall. Volunteer lifeguards will work the Raglan Beach from Labour Weekend until Easter.

Artisan and Merchant an act of eclectic curation

The Return of Summer he Chronicle has once again T come together with the N

ewly opened clothing, homeware and art shop Artisan and Merchant brings a fresh new range of beautifully created and curated products to Raglan’s CBD. Enter the new space and you’ll be greeted with an array of fresh blooms and hanging kokodama, interesting knick-knacks like terrariums, notebooks and candles, as well as original artwork, clothing, accessories and jewellery. Having held their opening night last Wednesday, owner Gretchen Hamilton hopes to provide local shoppers with a range of products that you can’t buy anywhere else. Featured local products include artwork by Megan Hockly, taxidermy art by Anick Faubert, floral bouquets and arrangements by Ange Hardy of Leef floral design and various bits of home décor as well as Gretchen’s own range of locally designed and produced clothing and a bit of jewellery, too. Having spent most of her adult life working in fashion, including a four-year stint as a retail manager for New Zealand label Zambesi, Gretchen has produced a small range of clothes using all natural fabrics like linen and super soft viscose. While she describes her own style as “pretty grungy”, the range of clothing available at Artisan and Merchant includes feminine layering pieces and soft silhouettes. “I was selling privately over Facebook and I had a few pieces at Rock-It when I started the label but they’d be gone by the end of the day so I thought it would be nice to offer something different in Raglan,” said Gretchen.

Gretchen designs most of the pieces (some of the clothing is designed in collaboration with a couple of European designers) and the clothing is made around the corner at Dominique Lecourtois Couture. “Dominique is amazing. I can’t draw but she somehow interprets my scribbles and understands me,” she said. Now that the shop is up and running, Gretchen hopes to keep the shop evolving with more products as the business matures. If you are out and about during Labour Weekend, make sure you go and check out the fantastic new things on offer at Artisan and Merchant at 1b Wainui Rd (corner of Wainui Rd and Volcom Ln). M.N.

Raglan Surf Co to take you down memory lane, into the history of Raglan’s surf culture.

The column was first published in November 2015, in an effort to shine a light on the past, present and future of surfing in Raglan. But we quickly discovered that you cannot talk about the present without understanding the past – and what has happened in the past plays a key role in the future. If this is the first surf column you’ve picked up, let’s get you up to speed. Raglan’s surf history dates back to the late 50s, with the likes of Peter Miller, Campbell Ross, Mike Court and a handful of others. And so the procession goes... In 1957 Peter Miller made the first short-board in New Zealand – a 10 ft, 32kg board with a 12 inch wooden skeg. 1958: The first lightweight foam board finds its way to New Zealand via Americans, Bing Copeland and Rick Stoner. 1960: Peter Miller is the first to surf “The Point”, known as Manu Bay. 1962: Mike Court opens up the first New Zealand ding repair shop in Hamilton. 1962-1963: The Hamilton Point Boardriders Club is established and would later become known as The Raglan Point Boardriders Club. 1963: Manu Bay boat ramp goes in. Mid-60s: Māori Mike, known nowadays as Malibu, first visits Raglan. He was one of the first Māori surfers in New Zealand. 1963: Point Boardriders move their clubhouse from Hamilton to Manu Bay (around where the current toilets are now situated). A couple years later it became infested with rats, so the then Boardriders president, Mike Court, burned it to the ground. 1964: Butch Walters wins the first Junior Point Board Riders competition. 1966: The Endless Summer is released, launching Raglan’s lefthand break into the worldwide surfing spotlight. 1970: Don Wilson opened Wilson Surfboards in Hamilton.

1973: Don moved his surfboard shop from Hamilton to Raglan (where INDI’s is now, and would later move to the current Bow Street Gallery), establishing the first surfboard shop in Raglan with Graham Crowhurst and Kevin McKell. It was also in the mid-70s that Peter Wright of Raglan developed the current leg rope design, a nylon rope attached to the surfboard. We’ll leave out the bit about the Aussie who modelled the current urethane design after Peter’s leg rope and later patented it as his own. (Before that, they were either surfing with no leg ropes, or tying the rope through a hole in the fin.) When we sat down to hear Malibu’s story, our conversation took us down a whole new path. As a surfer turned surfbreak protector and environmental champion, Malibu turned the spotlight to matters more urgent. We quickly recognised the importance of highlighting the issues that could have a detrimental impact on surfing. We discussed seabed mining with KASM Chairman, Phil McCabe and learned the importance of taking action to protect what we love – the ocean. We sat down with Ed Atkin and got an insight into eCoast and the Surf Break Research project they had been working on. Both of whose efforts continue today. We realised that surfing isn’t just about surfing. It’s about caring for the water, the coastline and the environment surrounding the surf breaks you call home. It’s about paying your respects to Tangaroa (god of the sea), Tāwhirimātea (god of weather) and even Tānemahuta (god of the forests) every time you are in the water. It’s about seeing the bigger picture. Here in Raglan, that means recognising that the surf is connected to Karioi, Karioi is connected to the Township, the Township is connected to the harbour–and the surf is intertwined within. And so with the return of summer we’ll pick up where we left off, travelling back down the timeline that is Raglan’s surf history. Karamea Puriri

On our Plate

Eating our way through Raglan....

This week the Chronicle visited Raglan Social Club.

With summer just around the corner, The Raglan Social Club is making preparations to welcome the warm weather with some fresh new tastes. Keeping to their motto of “simple food done well”, owners Rachel and Aza plan to triple the amount of offerings in their already packed cabinet with more dairy-free, glutenfree and vegan options. Also on deck for the Social Club are vegan thickshakes. Yes, vegan thickshakes. Giving the classic Kiwi favourite a healthy spin, with nut milk, coconut ice cream… the thought of this refreshing treat is already making my mouth water. Speaking of healthy, let’s talk Buddha Bowls. In our bowl, rather than on our plate this week, was a mouthwatering blend of quinoa, roasted veges, beet hummus, edamame beans, avo and a specialty green goddess dressing. Topped off with a roasted lemon and house salmon. This fresh medley will fill you up and give you a midday boost of energy. But don’t worry, for those of you who enjoy your occasional filling of meat, you’ll find the classic Ragburger still on the menu. Luckily, this was the perfect complement to our Buddha Bowl. I am a firm believer in sriracha. So when I discovered that the venison Ragburger

was topped with sriracha and a jalapeno relish, I was sold. Not to mention the pickles and battered onion rings, all of this placed between a perfectly toasted bun and paired with a side of crisp wedges. The thing about a Ragburger is that you don’t feel overstuffed with grease when you finish eating one. True to Social Club fashion, the ingredients are fresh and done well. Within the next month, Ragburger will return on weekend evenings with Beats and Burgers – kicking off with Friday afternoon sessions of beats, burgers and beers. With the patio out back, you might want to consider ending your work week a bit early over summer for this one. On the hunt for more of those breakky

flavours? You might want to try out a benedict, the hot cakes, or the flavour-packed savoury mince on toast. The Social Club offers chilled out vibes, great coffee, and delicious eats no matter what you’re in the mood for. With a familyfriendly vibe, it’s the perfect hangout for everyone. Over the coming Labour Weekend, the Social Club will stay open until dusk, giving you the opportunity to get your mid-afternoon coffee and snack fix. Visit the Social Club 7-days a week on 23 Bow Street. Karamea Puriri

Dance Like No One’s Watching - Take two! If you missed out on the last event, you don’t want to miss this one! Clear your diary and mark it in bold – Friday October 28, 6.30pm at the Town Hall Dance Like No One’s Watching! This koha-entry dance is a combined voluntary effort between Timebank Raglan and Nia in Waikato, with all funds raised, going to the co-ordination of Timebank. Timebank is a community initiative that ensures everyone has equal access to our highly skilled people of Whaingaroa. It is free to join Timebank and people swap time, rather than money, for services they need. For this initiative to run smoothly and successfully, a paid co-ordinator is needed. And what better way to raise funds than to dance together! Our last event went so well, with an

impressive number of families, singles, young and old packing in the town hall for some fun dancing to some easy popular tunes. “It was so good to see everyone getting in on the vibe, totally enjoying themselves and having a good time!” says Nicola from Nia in Waikato. For those of you who are nervous about getting your dancing shoes on – don’t worry! The hall will be blacked out, low lights and there is no choreography. If you can breathe, you can dance. So what are you waiting for? Gather your friends and family together, get out of the house and join us for sweat-shaking boogie – and extra kudos for supporting your community! To learn more about Timebank go to www.timebankraglan.co.nz. Please note this event is drug and alcohol free, family friendly and lots of fun!

Catch Midge Marsden live this Labour Weekend Perfectly timed, with the Raglan School 150th Jubilee, this weekend could be one of your last chances to see Midge Marsden performing live in Raglan.

MIDGE MARSDEN & BAND

The “60-several” year-old, currently living in Auckland after selling his long-time Raglan residence just over a year ago, has been pondering thoughts of retirement, planned for early next year. “I've been doing it since I was about 16 or 17 years old so I'm thinking about retiring next year and doing a bit of travel. “Because I know there's a finale, every gig is very special and nostalgic and a bit sad actually. “We always have a great time playing in Raglan so I'm really looking forward to it,” said Midge. Midge Marsden at the Raglan Club, Sunday, October 23, from 8pm. Tickets from eventfinda or call 07 825 8288.

Friday, 28 Oct 6.30pm - 8.00pm Raglan Town Hall Koha door charge: adults - $5, children - gold coin Proceeds to support Timebank Raglan coordination A Nia in Waikato & Timbank Raglan collaboration

The Raglan Sailing Club (RSC) is once again getting ready for a summer of sailing in Raglan Harbour. As part of their Club sailing season they will be offering a course of Learn to Sail (LTS) sessions for anyone wanting to learn the basics of sailing.

Once a month there will be a day dedicated to LTS sessions, each day covering two or more subjects related to small sailboats and sailing. These subjects range from the basic parts of the boat and rigging through to sailing, weather conditions, rules of the sea, and safety, etc. It will be a progressive sixsession course so it’s advised to join the club and take part in the whole series. The first LTS day is next Saturday, October 29, start time of 9am. Further dates are: Saturday November 19, start 1.00pm; Saturday December 3, start 11.15am; Saturday January 14, start 10.30am; Saturday February 11, start 9.30am; Saturday March 11 (closing day), start 9.00am. The sessions take place in Lorenzen Bay from the little yellow house on the right, across the causeway at the bottom of Lorenzen Bay Rd. Please bring warm clothing, towels, and a life-jacket if you have one. Also bring food and drink and extra clothing. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Be advised that the tide comes in over the causeway so park at the bottom of Lorenzen Bay Rd. Young and old are welcome to come along for a fun, social way to experience a different view of our lovely harbour. For any further enquiries please email raglansail@ yahoo.co.nz. RSC

Mud, glorious mud – getting wet and wild in Ruapuke The Inaugural Ruapuke Wet n Wild Mud Run was held on Saturday under a blazing hot sun after many days of perfect mud-making spring weather. The community event saw about 50 people run through the infamous water/mud hole at the Ruapuke Motor Camp, scaling obstacles, slinging mud and generally getting down and dirty! Winners of the locally made trophies were first male place-getter Dave Brunskill, first female Kelly Woolston and first child Kughar Hutt. Others were awarded for dedication, dressing up and, of course, getting dirty, including Team Super Max (the Jowsey family), the Muddy Bunnies and Dirty rabbit (Doran whanau) and Purple Fairy (Kara Marsh). The organisers give a huge thanks to Geoff and Ang from Ruapuke Motor Camp for allowing the event to be held at the premises, and are already busy working on next year’s mud run.
