Large quantities of household rubbish was dumped in Te Hutewai Rd, Raglan, and Old Mountain Rd, Waitetuna, this month, with disgusted residents posting photos on the Raglan Notice Board Facebook page.

WDC monitoring team leader Craig Birkett said it was difficult to estimate the volume of rubbish being illegally dumped in the district but between January 1 and November 1 the council had received 655 requests for service regarding the issue.

Council spent $43,279 dealing with dumped rubbish between January and September.

There had been three reported incidents in Old Mountain Rd in the past five months, with rubbish including old whiteware appliances and electronic goods, nappies, old piping, wet wipes and general household waste in black sacks.

“Illegal dumping is a concern throughout the district, with some areas

infringements in Raglan.

“Council encourages people to report illegal dumpers, in the act where possible. When we obtain evidence of the dumping we can issue a fine or consider court action. If a person is seen dumping rubbish a $400 fine can be issued. If the litter can cause injury to health, such as glass, syringes, spiky metal, etc, then a fine of up to $7500 can be issued plus the cost of the rubbish removal. Offenders are also liable for prosecution and a fine of up to $30,000.”

Meanwhile, Raglan residents have also been complaining about the amount of rubbish being left on the beaches, particularly after Labour Weekend.

“I grabbed a plastic bag and started picking up the rubbish left on the beach ... Dirty nappy, empty fizzy drink bottle, serviettes, bum wipes ... I was appalled,” Nickie-leigh Heta posted on Raglan Noticeboard.

It was noted that Raglan’s rubbish bins were full and overflowing during the long weekend, and perhaps more were needed or they had to be emptied more regularly.

Mountainbiking trails on track for a summer opening

T

he signs are up but the Raglan Mountainbiking Club is asking users to stay off the new trails until they are completed and open to the public.

Club treasurer Dirk De Ruysscher said some people had already been trying out the new tracks in the pine forest at Wainui Reserve, including some kids on motorbikes.

“There was some minor damage but we got them off in time and they said sorry.”

Dirk says motorbikes are not permitted in the reserve, and not just for safety reasons.

“We don’t want motorbikes in there because they will rip it up.”

Track builder Empire of Dirt has been cutting out and compacting loop tracks in the pine forest with diggers since September 1, and have about 400 metres left to go.

They will then go in by hand to get out any tree roots and smooth edges.

The $56,000 cross-country circuit is a community project driven by the Raglan Mountainbiking Club.

Dirk says the trails, which have “nice ocean views and inland views”, will be open to the public.

“But if people are planning to ride

them a lot then we would appreciate it if they become a member of the club or give a donation to help keep the track in good nick.”

Regular maintenance will be the club’s responsibility, and will include regular removal of pine needles off the track, to prevent them from getting slippery.

Dirk says the track is a regular crosscountry loop, about 4km long, with a bit of everything.

“There’s a few fun bits: some jumps and some nice flowing corners.

“If you go around two or three times it is a good workout.”

Access to the trails is from the car park at the end of Riria Kereopa Memorial Drive. Waikato District Council has already put up a sign for the mountainbiking track on the intersection with Wainui Rd. “People will have to walk up the hill to get to it because there is no more money for an extra track.”

Dirks says all users must be aware that it could take up to a year before the track will be how it is intended to be.

“The more that ride it the better the trails will become.

“People shouldn’t expect that from day one it will be like the quality of the Rotorua tracks.”

The trails are all grade two – easy – and something “older kids will enjoy, definitely”.

“It will be a draw card to Raglan,” says Dirk.

“If it’s a bad beach day, it is very sheltered in there – so it’s going to be a nice alternative when other activities are not possible. I expect a lot of people from out of town to come and use it.”

Dirk, who rents bikes at his shop, Cyclery Raglan, in Bankart St, says the club hopes that the new trails will be the start of a cycling network in Raglan.

The Waikato District Council has made a commitment to improve and build walking and cycling trails with its Trails Strategy 2016, which is still being drafted. A number of potential new routes have been identified in Raglan, including the west coast on the other side of the harbour.

The Raglan Mountainbiking Club currently has 45 paid members, with 15 people joining in the past two weeks.

Club member Charlie Young says they are looking for more members to join, at a cost of $20 a year.

Club members will have the job of preriding the track to get it ready for an open day, earmarked for Saturday, December 3.

Raglan Area School is one of 11 Waikato schools to get new classrooms as part of the Government’s $882.5 million investment in school property nationwide.

The school has also received about $800,000 in government funding for property maintenance, with the money to be spent on refurbishing the school hall, pool changing sheds, the old dental clinic and a complete makeover of the junior block, I Block.

Mr Cox said the two new classrooms, which address rising numbers in the school roll, were well overdue.

“We are using spaces that aren’t always suitable for the classes we have,” said Mr Cox. Some classes are being crammed into small resource rooms for lessons.

Mr Cox said the school roll had been steadily growing by about 30 students a year, and was now close to 500.

“That’s about a classroom a year – all our flexibility has gone.”

He said the climb in the roll corresponded with Raglan’s popularity as an attractive place to live, and more senior students were returning to finish their secondary education in town, coming from Hamilton schools.

“I think the numbers are even being suppressed by the lack of rental requirements in town, and families having to move away.”

The two new classrooms will be built offsite, and the school is currently talking with the Ministry of Education regarding design requirements.

One of the classrooms will service the needs of junior students, and the other will accommodate seniors.

Mr Cox said the board of trustees was still working out where the new classrooms would be placed.

“It’s really critical to get them in the right place, we don’t want to take up any field space.

“We have about eight more sites available without intruding on the field, and haven’t decided where they will go yet.

“You want to be able to present the school well.”

Mr Cox said the ministry had given no deadline as to when the classrooms would be delivered by.

“We would like to be set up and ready to start the first school term next year. But there are 11 classrooms to go out in the Waikato, so it is unlikely everyone will get theirs by then.”

Mr Cox said it would be useful to have the new rooms in place before the complete refurbishment of I Block, inside and out, took place. The school has just put the job out for tender, which includes a new roof, decking and toilets.

“We might have to move classrooms out of I block so it would be useful to have the new classrooms here by then.”

It was hoped that the other refurbishments would be completed in time for the new school year.

The changing rooms, kitchen, foyer, roof and toilets of the school hall are currently being overhauled, the pool changing shed will be getting new toilets, and the old dental clinic is being turned into a students’ services area.

“Some buildings are looking very tired.” The oldest are about 90 years old.

n international conference opens in Whaingaroa (Raglan) on November 30 2016 at Poihakena Marae.

The Australasian Facilitator’s Network conference (AFN) will provide a learning, sharing and networking opportunity for those whose work involves facilitating meetings, groups and teams in businesses, communities, councils and government.

“As our world gets more and more complex, skills for facilitating effective group discussions and processes for collaboration and reaching consensus decisions are becoming more highly valued,” said Helen Ritchie from the AFN 2016 Organising Committee. “This

conference is a professional development opportunity in a field where such opportunities can be hard to come by.”

The conference includes field trips to see facilitation of change in action from groundbreaking community groups such as Whaingaroa Harbour Care, Kaiwhenua Organics and Xtreme Zero Waste. A range of interactive workshops and plenary sessions will be on offer, including facilitation of collaborative decisionmaking; online facilitation and much more.

Entertainment includes an evening with acclaimed master Taonga Pūoro (traditional Maori instruments composer and musician) Horomona Horo.

“The conference theme this year is Tuakana Teina. “This reflects the spirit of AFN which, in its 18th year of operation, provides opportunities for facilitators in Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific to

learn from each other,” said Michelle Rush, from the AFN 2016 organising committee.

“Tuakana Teina is about those with more knowledge and experience mentoring and sharing with those just starting out. A special focus this year is on working across cultures.

“This follows on from previous AFN conferences in Alice Springs and Ballina to continue the theme of ‘walking together’ and encouraging Maori, and indigenous Australian and Torres Strait islanders, to attend this conference,” said Michelle Rush. “The ability to work effectively with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds is becoming more and more important.”

Surfers stay has national awards judges crowing too T

he Whale Bay surfers stay whose clever design earned it two Waikato regional architectural gongs back in July has now gone on to pick up a national award in the same prestigious competition.

‘Crow’s Nest’ – which is essentially two pavilions on a deck – was announced at the 2016 national ADNZ/Resene Architectural Design Awards ceremony in Auckland last Friday as the year’s top residential compact (up to 150 sqm) new home.

The judges, who had to weigh 149

entries in all, reiterated earlier comments that the design was strikingly simple and had “value and implications beyond the beach house and into the discussion of affordable housing”.

Occasional itching is a normal protective mechanism. But when itching causes your dog to damage its skin, causes your pet distress, or disrupts the household, it can be a problem.

Not that the Waitetuna teen finds hula hooping difficult – she’s been performing for years – but there is something she really wants now out of it all and that’s to be able to join 20 of her Hamilton Girls’ High schoolmates on a three-week tour of some of Europe’s cultural capitals next year.

Arty’s Fundraiser Circus Show will hopefully help towards the $8500 cost of that once-in-a-lifetime trip, says the bubbly 15-year-old who will tag on an extra week to stay with her maternal grandparents in Austria.

Artemis – that’s her full name – has grown up in New Zealand “surrounded by circus”. Her parents, Damian Gordon and Irene Goed, own Circus Aotearoa, which is based at their remote 18-hectare bush block off Old Mountain Rd but which Damian takes on tour around the country for half the year.

So both Arty and older brother Matthias – a ‘New Zealand’s Got Talent’ semifinalist in 2012 with his ‘roller boller’ balancing act – haven’t

had to run away to the circus at all, but rather have grown up travelling and performing with their very own one during most school holidays.

Now Arty’s putting together, with her parents’ help, a show that she says will feature some of the country’s most talented circus performers – all of whom have donated their time for her cause.

They include Wellington brothers Zane and Degge, grand finalists with their comedy juggling act in the same ‘New Zealand’s Got Talent’ series in which Matthias starred. Then there’s brother-sister act Lisa and Kozo, jugglers and magicians from Auckland.

And for a breathtaking aerial silk performance there’s Imogen Stone, also up from Wellington.

Arty, too, is an aerial silk artist – trained by her mother, Irene, who has previously wowed Raglan audiences with her skills – but will stick for this show with “hooping”, which involves artfully manipulating multiple hula hoops on different parts of her body like her neck, knees and arms.

Arty changed into bright blue and green shorts and midriff top at home in Waitetuna last Sunday to give the Chronicle a quick demo of her routine, while Irene was busy perfecting what is to be her debut

foot juggling act with a long piece of pipe.

Damian’s coming on board, too, with his hat juggling-cum-clown act but Matthias won’t make it as he’s busking overseas.

Irene hopes that there will be a full house at Te Uku’s community hall. “We will put out as many chairs as we can cram in,” she laughs.

Included in the show along with the pros will be her Waitetuna Wonder Kids. Aged 7-12 years, they’re Irene’s proteges from Waitetuna, Te Uku and Raglan Area Schools.

For a few years now she’s taught circus skills to local children from the living room of her home each week. For many of them, Arty’s show will be their first performance.

“It was a nice way for them to work towards something,” explains Irene.

Arty agrees. The fundraiser will be a good mix of professionals and kids, she says, offering “something for everyone”.

Canine itch can be caused and exacerbated by many factors including infections, parasites or allergies. The four most common allergies are: • Flea allergy (even one flea can cause this) • Food allergy • Contact allergy (when your dog comes into direct contact with something which triggers the itch) • Atopic dermatitis (itchy skin disease associated with environmental allergens, eg. pollens, moulds or house-dust mites) You will usually notice when your dog has a skin disease because of their change in behaviour or their smell! There are some important signs to look out for that may indicate your dog is itchy. These include: • An increase in licking, chewing, biting or scratching • An increase in rolling, rubbing or scooting their bottom • Foot chewing • Hair loss • Ear irritation, redness or smell • Changes in the appearance

of the skin, eg. sores or darkened colour • Redness of the skin • Body odour With allergic skin diseases, your dog will experience a vicious cycle of itching and scratching. It is very important to take the scratching seriously and stop your dog’s itch sensation rapidly because: 1. Itching is very irritating for your dog (and you!)

2. The longer they itch, the worse the skin condition becomes and the harder it is to control 3. Long-time admirers of one another’s work, Lynne, Celine and Adrienne have finally come full circle, together in a collaboration that both excites them and rejuvenates their interest in country music.

Together they perform songs that shaped their lives and brought them to where they are today. Their charming onstage antics and

sisterly love will leave you feeling very much part of The Toner Family.

Lynne was the first ever winner of the NZCMA Entertainer of the Year and New Zealand representative on ‘Singer For Asia’ in Hong Kong, Celine has been a guest of the late George Hamilton IV on the Grand Ole Opry, Nashville, Tennessee, and Nashville’s International Fanfare. She has also graced the stages of Sydney Opera House, Melbourne Concert Hall and Chinese National Theatre to name a few. Adrienne was the youngest ever to appear on ‘That’s Country’, setting her on a musical path that has seen her perform on various shows and tours to the present day including the fabulous ‘Warbirds’.

Together, their list of achievements in country music is second to none. Collectively they have opened for Ricky Scaggs, Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Bros, Kenny Rogers, George Hamilton IV, Freddy Fender, Rod Stewart, Ronan Keaton and much more. Each has toured nationally and internationally and have now come full circle – take a piece of them home with you with their brand new EP, ‘Full Circle - The Acoustic Session’.

Their special guest and musical director is local Raglan musician Dave Maybee (guitarist, singer, songwriter, recording producer). Dave has put together The Country Pickers Show Band featuring James Ray (guitar), Rick Cotter (drums), Mike Curtin (bass) and Nick Jones (keys and fiddle).

“It’s a privilege to play with players and singers of this calibre” says Dave Maybee of the eight-piece lineup that boasts an impressive frontline of six singers.
