Dear Editor It’s been a good week.

I reached the age of eightythree on Monday. It seems ridiculous, I still feel like a lad. There have been some presents, which is nice, but brings to mind an annoying aspect of modern life: packaging.

To find out what you have received you have to wade through layers of protective covering. Then you have to dispose of the careful wrapping.

Sometimes it’s still usable as wrapping for your own present giving arts. Otherwise it goes into the bin and out with the rubbish.

live Hobson has been warning Waikato District Council all year that that logging trucks were tearing up Otonga Valley Rd. On Monday night, a culvert finally collapsed, and the council closed off the road to all traffic.

Clive, who lives in Otonga Valley Rd near the collapsed piece of road, said he had warned the council that a slump that had formed over the culvert was “a major”, and “they said they would monitor the situation”.

“So much for their monitoring, the whole thing collapsed.”

Clive said a neighbour discovered it at about 9pm on Monday as he was driving – a 1-metre-high wall rose up in front of him.

“When I went down and saw it … it just reminded me of the pictures on the news of the earthquake in the South Island, but this is caused by logging trucks.

“We did a ring around and alerted the neighbours that they wouldn’t be able to get out in the morning.”

Clive said about 21 families lived in Otonga Valley Rd. “One family has five children, one has four, you are looking at possibly 100 people.”

Many residents arranged for rides on the other side and the council stationed a

vehicle and driver at the end of the road for emergency use.

Clive said about six to eight weeks ago a depression had formed in the road running over the culvert.

“They put a load of hot mix into it but the depression kept forming.

“So there is something substantial going on underneath.”

Clive said logging trucks had moved into the area at the beginning of the year and “have been tearing up the road”. He said he had rung the logging company about four times expressing concern at the speeds the trucks were going, and that the road wasn’t designed for such heavy loads.

“I’ve told council (about road damage) and they say it’s only minor, they will patch it up when they are in the area.

“I’ve told them they should get out of their air-conditioned offices at some stage.

“If that happened in Auckland, if they even made a scratch in the road they would get a fine.

“Council doesn’t do a thing. They need to pay for the damage they are causing.

“We’ve had washouts and what not in the valley here to right up to the tarseal – 5m drops and 2m drops.”

Clive had spoken to a logging truck driver on the day of the culvert collapse and had asked when they would be out.

“They were supposed to have been out in October. He said hopefully they would be gone by today … they left their parting gift, yes.”

Businesses accused of not ‘pulling weight’ in water conservation efforts

aglan residents were told to not even flush their toilets in an effort to conserve water this week, but meanwhile it was business as usual for the cafes in the CBD. Residents took to the Raglan Notice Board Facebook site to express their disgust at the double standard issued by Waikato District Council.

There was a big push by the council for residents to conserve water use after the 7.5 magnitude earthquake near Hanmer Springs in the South Island on early Monday morning affected the town’s water supply.

Residents were told to limit their water use to only necessary drinking: “Do not do washing, shower or flush the loo (only number twos).”

“Anyone else disgusted that all the restaurants and cafes continued to be open,” wrote Jessie Rushton.

“Personally if the situation is dire they should have been warned and closed as should any other business on mains raglan water (sic).

“How can we take this seriously if they are still using lots of water (I haven't had a shower or washed clothing … I am really upset that this part of the community isn't pulling their weight.”

“I am surprised that there wasn't a mandatory shutdown of all business using excessive use of water,” wrote Abbie Morgan.

June Wadeson said: “Save water don’t shower we all do out bit except for cafes shops etc which makes it a little hard on the ones trying (sic).

Waikato District Council said it

appreciated the efforts of residents in limiting their water use.

“We continue to stress that if water use is not kept to an absolute minimum it may run out as we are unable to keep up with even a normal demand for water,” Waikato District Council Local Controller Merv Balloch said on Tuesday.

He said the council had also asked local businesses to show restraint in water use.

The Shack owner Justin Thomson said trying to conserve water was “really, really, really hard”.

“You can’t. Basically it’s really hard – we need the dishwasher, it operates at really high temperatures.

“I can see the gripes. That’s pretty fair.

My wife and I talked about not opening up for the three days but we can’t afford to, we have 24 staff to pay.”

He said he had had calls from members of the public telling him he was not allowed to open.

“I think people have been coming in to use the toilet,” he laughed.

Orca owner Corrina Wells said staff had made a big effort to conserve water and she had been filling up containers with water from her own supply at home to use at the cafe.

Raglan Community Board chairman Bob MacLeod said when the mountain shook early on Monday morning it stirred up the spring that supplied the town water.

“The pump turned off because the water wasn’t clear, and the pump wont pump murky water into the reservoir.”

Then, just as the water was clearing,

another quake on Monday afternoon shook the spring up again.

Yesterday morning, the council was still trucking in water to top up the reservoirs. A tanker had been based at the fire station for those needing fresh drinking water.

Greenslade Rd properties were being supplied water by a tanker after a burst pipe overnight on Tusday.

Residents have been told to boil water for drinking.

The council said it would continue to top up the reservoir until the water treatment plant could be turned back on again – once water tests came back clear. This could be a minimum of three days, it said on Tuesday.

“We wont run out, we haven’t got the tourists here at the moment,” said Bob. Raglan fire chief Kevin Holmes, who was woken by the earthquake shortly after midnight, said the volunteer brigade was on a tsunami red alert for the rest of the night.

“There was the potential that we would have to evacuate at any stage.”

Then, at 5.45am, he was informed by Civil Defence and WDC that there was no water for firefighting if it was needed. A water tanker was brought in from Ngaruawahia.

The earthquake rocked many Raglan residents out of their bed.

A number of residents in Te Mata also reported seeing the luminous phenomenon known as earthquake lights.

Damion Scarlett said he witnessed what looked like an “electrical explosion” over the hills towards Waingaro.

The Music and Dance Festival, being put on by charitable organisation Waikato Rocks, will include five dance groups, five bands, face painting and bouncy castles for the kids, food stalls and more.

Logan Nathan, a teacher at Raglan Area School and a trustee of Waikato Rocks, says he has always wanted to organise such a free event for Raglan and he is pleased it is finally happening. The Music and Dance Festival will become an annual event.

Performing will be: Sambatron, a

Brazilian drums and dance group; Goddess Belly Dance Hamilton; the Raglan Area School junior kapa haka group; the Hamilton Chinese Ethnic Song and Dance Group; reggae-funk band Rootz Konekt from Hamilton; Raglan band Mighty Mighty; This Flight Tonight from Auckland; Jason McIver and the Collective from Taupo; and Te Aorangi Ariana-Smith from Hamilton.

Logan says there will also be a freestyle dance competition that is open to the public and organised by DJ Stretchmark, Dujon Cullingford.

“This is a one-on-one competition. One person will perform at a time,” says Logan.

Free style is a mix of hip-hop, break dance and contemporary dance, and there

will be a cash prize of $500 for the winner.

The food stalls will include various ethnic cuisine organised by Gourmet in the Garden.

“We are expecting some art workshops and jewellery and also clothing, maybe.”

Waikato Rocks has been supporting original works by artists since 2010 on television, radio, online and on the stage.

“We started in radio with Tractor FM in Raglan, promoting original music from New Zealand, and then we expanded to Free FM 89.0, TV Central, SKY TV, online and organising events to showcase our people,” says Logan.

“The creativity of our people is abundant but they are not being supported enough.

“Waikato Rocks aims to showcase the creativity of our people in all possible mediums so that they are shared and celebrated in their own community and beyond.”

Logan says the groups performing at the Music and Dance Festival will be paid enough to cover their travel expenses but the trust hopes to pay them more in the future “if we get more funding for the event”.

He says about 500 to 600 people are expected to show up to the festival.

“But you never know, it could go to 1000 as we see the sun starting to shine, and people love to come to Raglan beach.”

Call for snaps of super moon high tides he’s sure is a big one and so are the high S tides.

This week’s super moon event brings a series of king tides on Waikato’s coasts, raising high tide levels to 100-year peaks (not counting potential sea level rise due to climate change or storms).

Waikato Regional Council is keen for citizen photographers to send in their snaps to help staff build their understanding of where the tides reached to in such extreme conditions.

“We’d really appreciate any photos that people took so that we can document what’s happening and get a clearer picture of potential coastal hazards,” said senior regional hazards adviser Rick Liefting.

The highest tides over the week on the west coast were on Tuesday, November 15, around 10.45am and yesterday, November 16, around 11.30am. On the Firth of Thames coasts they were yesterday at around 9am and today at around 10am. On the east coast of the Coromandel they’ll occur today at around 9.30am and tomorrow around 10.30am.

People can email their photos along with their observations and locations to coastalinundationtool@waikatoregion.govt.nz.

They can also use the council’s coastal inundation modelling tool to see where the king tides were likely to reach. It’s available at www. waikatoregion.govt.nz/coastal-inundation-tool/

“The ‘Max Tide’ figures on that site show maximum high tides levels, not taking into account any storm or wave effects and they also don’t account for any projected sea level rise under global warming. However, the tool can be used to see what impact future projected rises in sea level may occur. The king tides this week are expected to be at around those ‘Max Tide’ levels due to the super moon’s impacts,” said Mr Liefting.

He said the council’s regional hazards team would issue advice if the king tides were likely to coincide with weather or wave conditions that would lead to any heightened risks for communities.

Temporary police officer posted in Raglan to cover vacancy R full staff with the temporary

Constable Gary Ryburn started work in Raglan last week. He covers a gap left by the leaving of senior constable Kevin McGartland at the end of June.

Waikato Western Area Commander Naila Hassan said Mr Ryburn was “a very well-respected police officer”, and he would be based in Raglan until a permanent officer was found for the job.

“I would really like to thank the community for their patience,” said Ms Hassan, who has been struggling to fill the position.

The position has been advertised three times so far – applications for the last posting closed last week.

“There has been two processes so far,” said Ms Hassan. In the first instance there was no shortlist, and with the second process “an officer was offered the job but turned it down”, possibly because it “was too expensive for him to live out there”.

“I need the right person who is going to fit in with the Raglan community and the police team, so we just don’t accept anyone for the job.

“I have heard that there are a number of people who are keen from

our own district.”

Ms Hassan said the police officer would be required to live in Raglan or nearby.

“They must be able to respond to a job within 30 minutes of a call coming in.”

Also, the position wasn’t just about stepping into the community for eight hours and then stepping out again.

“We want them to be seen in the community, at restaurants and supermarkets, it’s about building the trust and confidence of the community.

“Hopefully the community will understand why we have done what we have done.”

Ms Hassan said the recruitment process was a long one. “It has to be advertised, shortlisted, interviewed, paper work, and then getting presence on the ground.

“It can take two-and-a-half to three months, that’s why there has been a delay. The first process took six weeks.”

Ms Hassan said with summer coming and the population beginning to swell in town she had no hesitation in posting a temporary officer in Raglan.

“I have had some members of the community ringing me with various concerns … I have to prioritise numbers when and where they are needed. Now the demand is there (in Raglan) so there is no hesitation in

putting in another officer.”

She promised that there would be a high visible police presence in Raglan in the week leading to Christmas and past the new year.

“There will be additional police to support the Raglan policing team.

“There will be a sergeant on duty every day and night until about midnight.

“We will run a big new year operation as well so there will be even more officers on duty on New Year’s Eve. “We are doing it so that the community feels safe; keep the rat-bags out of town, to deter crime, and for the community to know that if they ring the police there will be a response.”

Raglan not a ‘safe’ place to live

atinderpal Sidhu is feeling and disillusioned following a brazen attack on him while he was working at Thirsty Liquor on Sunday night.

“I was not expecting these things to happen in Raglan,” said Sid, who was punched about three times in the head and knocked to the ground while behind the counter. Four men stormed the shop at about 9.15pm and made off with alcohol.

“Raglan is very safe, I thought.”

Sid, who has worked in the Thirsty Liquor since it opened about a year ago, said he recognised two local young men – one of them has been a customer – on CCTV footage relating to the incident.

He has handed the footage over to Raglan police.

The footage shows a group of young men dressed in hoodies and red caps loitering outside the Thirsty Liquor for about 20 minutes. There is a lot of handshaking, backslapping and hugging going on, and one of the men even turns to the CCTV camera to wave.

There were about eight young men altogether, aged about 19 or 20, said Sid. “Two cars were there; from one car (a van), six boys came out.”

At about 9pm, the group left in their vehicles, but the van returned about 20 minutes later and parked across the road.

“Three of them came into the shop while one waited outside. One of the boys came in and started punching me, I was sitting in the chair, and the other boys started grabbing things off the shelf.”

It was all over in 30 seconds.

“I tried to catch one of them from the back (of his shirt) but he got away because I was still on the ground.

“It was scary, a lot of blood was coming from my nose.”

The man who punched Sid in the head is easily recognisable on the CCTV footage but the two other men who entered the building are wearing hoodies – one of them has a long black handkerchief tied around his face.

“They didn’t say anything, just did their job.”

Sid, who was back at work the next day, said he no longer felt that Raglan was a safe place to live. “Actually, I feel really scared.”

Extra staff will be on at nights in the shop, now, and Sid has a baseball bat that he said he would use to defend himself.

The offenders made their move when Sid’s co-worker, a woman, had left the shop.

Sid said he could tell the group had been planning something because of their suspicious behaviour and gestures.

A 111 call was made at about 9.20pm, after the attack, but the police did not attend the scene until the next morning.

“They took too long. We close at 10pm; we waited for over half an hour.

“They rang me about 10.15pm and said are you okay, we will come in the morning.”

Sid said the police recognised two of the men who had been standing outside on the footpath prior to the attack, and those men had been asked the identity of the four who were later involved in the attack and theft.

“They said they can’t recognise anyone and they are all standing there and shaking hands.”

In-Brief: Community Board meeting New Chairman Bob MacLeod has been elected as chairperson of the Raglan Community Board.

The triennial meeting of the new board was held on Tuesday last week, with Gabrielle Parson appointed as deputy chairperson. Waikato District Mayor Allan Sanson, who attended the meeting, told the board members to use their time wisely. “I am challenging community boards to sit down and workshop among yourself to identify the projects you would like to focus on.” He advised them to stop looking at the cracks in the pavement and to get up in a helicopter to look at what the community wanted: “Take the tittle-tattle away from meetings and focus on what you want to deal with.”

Traffic management needed during silly season The Raglan Community Board has requested roading management at the one-way bridge during the busy holiday period.

Raglan ward councillor Lisa Thomson said there was need of a forward plan after traffic was backed up on both sides of the bridge during Labour Weekend. She suggested a stop-go service to help with congestion because the use of temporary traffic lights, which worked on a timer, hadn’t worked well in the past. Chairman Bob MacLeod agreed: “There were lights, then they got thrown over the bridge; and they got some other ones and they got thrown over the bridge, too.”

New handrails at wharf Rotting handrails at the Raglan Wharf will be replaced due to health and safety reasons.

The Waikato District Council said it had a limited budget so it would simply replace the handrails with like for like in order to “alleviate health and safety concerns and ensure building compliance”. Only the handrails on the section of wharf above the pontoon will be replaced because “a fall off the wharf in any other area would result in a person landing in the water”. Repairs will also be made to the handrails of Dolphin Pier to bring it up to compliance. The works are expected to take place in the next few weeks and should not impact on users of the wharf.

“We need to identify the four people involved in the attack.”

She said the attack was a “horrendous” act and unnecessary, but, yes, this was what Raglan was becoming.

“People think that Raglan is some idyllic spot where nothing goes wrong.

It has its fair share of crime.”

Last month, the All Style Tattoo shop, Wainui Rd Superette and the Herbal Dispensary were broken into at night. In late August, Black Sands, Roll Up, Orca and Raglan Bakery were broken into. CCTV footage also showed hooded offenders.

Raewyn said the Thirsty Liquor had told police they didn’t want attendance on Sunday night. Raglan’s police officers were on call, she said.

“We would have gone if directed to.

The shop was closing and they requested attendance the next day when they open ed.”

The Raglan Community Board last week approved applications of funding to four community groups.

The Raglan Mountainbiking Club has been given $787.75 to pay for the printing of 2500 Wainui Reserve track maps; Whaingaroa Environment Centre has been given $5074.54 towards the cost of the Plastic Free Raglan Project; The Raglan Lions Club has been given $1775 for prize money for its annual New Year’s Eve Parade; and the Raglan Community Arts Council has been approved $10,000 towards the cost of building a new creative space/clay shed.

Raglan Naturally update Rangi Kereopa has been elected as Raglan Community Board representative on the Raglan Naturally steering group.

Raglan Naturally is a community plan to give residents a collective voice regarding the development of the town.

An interim steering group comprises of Tim Duff, Deb King, Tony Mayow, Kelly Murphy, Steve Soanes and Meredith Youngson. The role of the interim steering group is to provide the community with a consultation draft in February 2017, and then residents will be able to register their interest in joining the steering group. It is envisioned that the steering group will from time to time need the expertise of Waikato District Council staff – policy planners and economic development managers – to ensure the community’s goals and aspirations are achievable and align with documents such as the District Plan and Long Term Plan.

Town hall funk party promises revelry with a feel-good factor

Local funk band Mighty Mighty will be headlining the New Year's Eve event. party to be held at Raglan Town Hall promises to be a New Year’s Eve A funk bash revelers won’t feel bad about next morning.

That’s because it’s all for a good cause and profits from the event, which is restricted to 200 tickets, will go to Hospice Waikato.

Music promoter Tom McCormick reckons the R18 party will have the whole hall dancing the old year out.

Local DJ B-Rex will “warm the crowd up” before five-piece Raglan funk band ‘Mighty Mighty’ takes over to ring in the New Year.

drums, Mr OD on bass guitar, Cam Olsen on guitar and Greggy Keys on keyboard and trombone.

“It should be a mad night, a brilliant night,” says Tom, even though he expects some revelers might opt to cut out early from the party’s 1am finish and head downtown at midnight to catch the community fireworks display.

To help partygoers get into a funky vibe there’ll be 100 afro wigs up for sale on the night, with proceeds also going to the hospice which, Tom says, has a “big hole” in its funding each year.

A pop-up bar – featuring Vilagrad wines from Ohaupo – and pop-up curry house courtesy of Isao from Raglan’s popular Duckas Tucka outlet will keep the party going. And it’s a “one-way door” from 10pm to control the sale of liquor.

Tom says the venue will be decked out with disco balls and funky lighting for the occasion. “It’ll be nice to use the town hall on the big evening of the year.”

To capitalise on the hall’s weekend-long hireage and decoration, a New Year’s UV or ultra-violet party – with UV face painting available – will be held for children and teens the night before the funk event. A junior superhero disco for children aged 13 and under starts at 5pm, and will be followed by a senior rave at 8pm, with tickets $5 and $10 respectively at the door.

Tom hopes these ticket sales will help cover the cost of the main event on New Year’s Eve, ensuring there’s a profit of $2000 or more for Hospice Waikato.

Summer Sunday Sessions kicks off this weekend

RAGLAN WATER UPDATE At the time the Chronicle went to print on Wednesday November 16, the latest update from Waikato District Council is as follows: We’re still working really hard on your water situation. You’re doing a great job, but please continue what you’re doing.

The spring which supplies Raglan turned dirty and the water treatment plant had to close down. We have ordered tests for e.Coli and heavy metals which take at least three days to come back from the lab. To make sure everyone is kept safe, we can’t run the water treatment plant until those tests come back.

Please continue to conserve your water as we continue to truck water into the reservoirs.

A tanker remains at the Fire Station for those who need it.

Don’t forget to take your own water containers and drink bottles.
