A true unsung hero of our community and chairman of the Raglan Māori Wardens, John Bishop passed away suddenly last Wednesday at his home in Raglan. A tangi was held on Saturday in Whatawhata and his contributions to the Raglan community will be missed immensely.

Under John’s direction, the Raglan Māori Wardens have been and still are a vital part of our community. You may have seen them in their high-viz, quietly directing traffic, or perhaps you’ve stopped to have a chat to John himself outside the Māori Warden’s office in Bow St. But directing traffic is not all that this small group of volunteers do, and it’s what most of us don't see that is its most important role of all.

John and his crew have helped many families with social and domestic issues on an individual basis, and they also work closely with some of the young people in the community who have fallen from the straight and narrow.

The rehabilitation programme that the wardens were instrumental in setting up has helped many offenders reintegrate back into the community and significantly reduced re-offending rates.

The first marae-based restorative justice case was in 1996 and was the first such sentence recognised by the courts in New Zealand. Out of the 200 cases that have been cared for to date by the Raglan Māori Wardens only two have ended in recalls to court.

John has been a Māori warden since 1971. He was nominated by Purekereke Marae Tribal Committee Pirongia, appointed by the Honourable Koro Wetere, the then Minister of Māori Affairs, and in the same year appointed a Justice of the Peace.

He had a wide range of skills and life experiences that added to the formal qualifications obtained over the years, including farming, trucking, agriculture and machinery, contractor and pilot.

John spent his time working for the community, including with courts and the probation service, police, CYF and WINZ. John and his team of volunteers organised the provision of security, crowd and vehicle control at community events (including tangi and funerals), monitoring public safety (such as the Kopua footbridge, over summer), facilitating group family conferences and providing night patrols in Raglan.

The Raglan Māori Wardens office is closed until further notice and will not be reopening in their current location.

Environment Court ruling against secrecy in seabed mining application a win for Kasm

K

asm has won its fight in the Environment Court, requiring Trans-Tasman Resources to reveal key information in its application to mine the seabed off the coast of Taranaki.

Kasm chairman and Raglan resident Phil McCabe, who was in Wellington for the two day court case on Monday and Tuesday, says the judge’s decision was a “clean sweep in our favour”.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Environment Court ruled for the release of 100s of pages of redacted information in TTR’s application to mine 50 million tonnes of seabed sediment per year for 35 years in the South Taranaki Bight.

Kasm had brought the case against the Environmental Protection Authority, which had required experts and submitters to sign a confidentiality agreement as a prerequisite to viewing information about the plume of sediment resulting from mining operations, and on economic matters.

Phil says the ruling was incredibly important “because the secrecy that was going on was potentially a really gnarly precedent setter”.

“The information being released is very important … and it is very important to challenge the secrecy of a public process.

The judge said they should expect the information to be assessed by the public.”

This is TTR’s second bid to mine the South Taranaki Bight – the EPA rejected consent in 2014, a case that was fought hard

by Kasm. It was then noted that the “ability for life to exist in the greater marine area would be significantly compromised”.

Phil says the Environment Court noted that because the first application had been declined there was a high degree of inevitability that information about the plume should be open to public assessment.

It was also noted that over 8000 submissions had already been made regarding TTR’s application – in 2014 there were 4800.

Local iwi Ngati Ruanui supported Kasm’s application in the Environment Court, as did fishing group Talley’s.

TTR had argued in court that it was withholding the information to protect its commercial interests because the data would be highly valuable to competitors.

“The judge said there was no other company that wants to mine where you do so there are no competitors,” says Phil.

Also, the public had the right to participate in the application.

“This was about public interest in protecting the environment versus corporate profits and it’s a good decision, righting a wrong. Now the public can get on with the job of assessing this highly controversial application in full with all the information they need.”

Submissions on TTR’s application close on November 14, but Kasm will now ask the Decision-Making Committee to extend the submission period as a matter of urgency, “to give people time to access the new information”.

Childcare centre someone else’s baby now aglan’s first childcare is now R somebody else’s baby – nearly 20 years after its conception.

Longtime co-owner and teacher Merren Goodison let go the apron strings of the Raglan Childcare & Education Centre last week. It was a business that she and husband Mike had nurtured since 1997.

“We nearly cracked the 20,” she told the Chronicle. “Not quite.”

New owner-manager Rachael Thomas was planning to celebrate her purchase with a bottle of bubbles, along with hubby Steve, when the Chronicle caught up with her at the Wallis St childcare on Tuesday last week.

The two are not new to childcare. They created Whatawhata’s first early childhood centre – from an old church – just off State Highway 39 nearly three years ago and it’s thriving, says Rachael.

“It’s very much a family-run affair,” she adds, implying the Raglan childcare will be, too.

Rachael has a passion for early childhood teaching that began years ago with her involvement in Playcentre, and Steve’s role is now the maintenance of both their businesses.

They have two young boys who they drop off at Pirongia School en route to the Whatawhata childcare centre from their lifestyle block in Ngutunui on Kawhia Rd. But now, of course, the daily commute will continue on to Raglan.

Merren says the couple – who are in their 30s – remind her of “what Mike and I were like” two decades ago, juggling the then new childcare venture with their own family of three young boys.

“They have that sort of energy,” Merren observes without regret. “I think it (Raglan Childcare & Education Centre) is in really good hands.”

Rachael, for her part, is looking forward to getting to know Raglan. While admitting light-heartedly that taking on another childcare centre was “a moment of madness”, she is excited to be part of a larger community than Whatawhata, one where children can enjoy easy outings to town and the beach.

Purchasing the well-established Raglan centre felt right, she explains of the midyear decision. “It felt like an extension to Whatawhata … and philosophically aligns to what we do (there).”

Rachael does things very much the Playcentre way. “I’m big on consensus decision-making as a team, for instance, it’s not a hierarchy.”

And a major part of her job is fostering relationships with parents and teachers, she explains.

All seven fulltime teachers at Raglan Childcare are staying on, Rachael adds.

There were small gifts from her for each of them last week – “because nobody likes change” – and Rachael herself was delighted to receive a congratulatory bouquet of flowers from the staff.

“They’ve all been so welcoming,” she says, directing special praise to Anne Snowden who she says has “been here forever” and knows the ropes.

Rachael and her husband immigrated to New Zealand from their native England 14 years ago, soon after getting married.

Tragically in 2009 the couple lost their son, Renzo, in a car crash on SH39 near

Ngahinapouri, which put Rachael’s dreams of pursuing a childcare career on hold.

Five years later she spied an old church for sale – ironically on the very highway that claimed Renzo’s life – and the couple set about rebuilding their lives by converting it to today’s successful early childhood centre.

Despite working long hours with both centres on the go, Rachael’s unfazed. “I believe passionately it (childcare) is worth the workload,” she says. “I love being able to shape the lives of little people.”

Selling the childcare centre downtown now leaves Merren and Mike free to put more effort into Matapihi Kindergarten which is set in eight acres of native bush just off Te Mata Rd. Opened seven-and-ahalf years ago, it fulfilled Merren’s dream of developing a country childcare centre surrounded by the natural environment, including a mini lake.

With the sale of Raglan Childcare & Education Centre – co-owned since 2007 with Max King – Merren and Mike are looking forward to building a new house on Upper Wainui Rd next to their former family home.

I even endured an interview with the mayor where he was keen to tell me that a major cause of Raglan’s sewerage problems was Raglan people chucking the wrong things down the toilet.

Sewerage – it’s hardly a mainstream election issue.

There had been no mainstream reporting on the elections for several days when an item popped up discussing a contrived scandal in the Auckland mayoralty race.

I got halfway through reading it and gave up in annoyance. Considering the effort I’d gone to book and interview most of our local candidates – and their efforts to come into the studio and answer questions thoughtfully – it seemed almost offensive to give time to such a pointless bit of click bait.

It’s not that we do anything fancy or tricky on community radio – and it’s certainly not rocket science – but I guess a single-minded focus on shareholder profits can distort things a bit.

It reminds me of the difference between Xtreme Zero Waste and the big recycle companies. The big companies get a bit of a free ride because they’re doing recycling which is supposed to be good for the environment, but they don’t deserve it. They would rather spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on brand-new automated wheely bin trucks and only employ one driver (while a machine sorts the recycling). Xtreme, on the other hand, does the same job with four or five people and a truck worth $10,000.

Surprisingly, the humans do a far superior job (while the costs are similar).

I’m sure I don’t need to explain the benefits to Raglan of employing four more people instead of sending the money to overseas’ truck manufacturers and shareholders.

To be clear, there are plenty of small businesses in town that contribute locally in just the same way that Xtreme Zero Waste does but I keep thinking about what else we could do better in Whaingaroa if it was run by a non-profit organisation.

fi Film Festival and the London Sci-fi Film, an award for Best Si-fi at the Gen Con Film Festival in the United States and Best Independent Film at the international Starburst Film Festival in Manchester.

Christian, who calls his film “the world’s biggest low-budget space movie ever – possibly”,

will be in Raglan tomorrow for a screening of the movie at the Old School Arts Centre and to hold a Q and A with the audience.

“The film's all totally self-funded and to say that it is now ending up in cinemas and is a well-liked movie makes it worth a look at least,” says Christian, who is touring New Zealand in over 30 shows.

Christian and his mate, Andrew Beszant, had entered the film in the Make My Movie competition in late 2011 but came second, out of over 750 entrants.

“We never got the funding. We just shot it anyway,” says Christian, who plays the lead, Tom, and used a low budget as a means to be creative.

The film is an indie-comedy-adventure about three guys that get sucked into a B-grade sci-fi universe when watching an old 50s sci-fi movie.

Christian says his favourite TV shows growing up – the likes of Blake’s 7, Star Trek and Battlestar Glactica – all seem so fake now but in his eyes back then they seemed so real.

“What happened to the good old days of sci-fi, when spaceships were models, monsters were made of latex and laser guns were a curling iron painted silver?”

So Christian created a universe where everything is like that for real!

Even the movie title harks to the good old sci-fi days.

“It is inspired by an episode of early Star Trek where Captain Kirk fights a lizard creature called Gorn. It’s a very famous scene where the lizard picks up a giant boulder and throws it at Kirk. It looks really light and fake. This sums it up. Looks fake and kooky but real and can kill you.”

Making the film took five years of hard labour and it is a real Kiwi do-ityourself story.

“Not having the money meant I had to do most things myself, and most people worked for love not money.

“I have had sell-out shows in Auckland and the response is much broader than I anticipated.

“Kids love it. Parents love it. Sci-fi fans love it. Even cool indie art house people love it – well some of them do.

“It's an action, adventure, comedy with the word cult written all over it. It has exotic locations, lavish sets, a fantastic wardrobe, kooky robots, awesome oneliners, loads of extras and a cracking good story to boot.”

Ahoy Creative Crew exhibition at Studeo Gallery

hoy Creative Crew embarks on a new venture. Members come and go and then join up again, and this has been the way for many years since Ahoy (previously Hello gallery) began operating.

This year, Ahoy is having its inaugural collective show, Untamed, at Chris Meek’s gallery, Studeo. Ahoy Creative Crew is an ever changing, evolving, eclectic group of artisans, painters, ceramicists, leather workers, print makers and creative foodies who share studios and retail space in Bankart St, and who have been art-making in this space for many years.

Exhibiting their work this year are Jodi Collins (paintings and ceramics), Wanda Barker (paintings and objects), Maida Barker (objects and fabric sculptures), Kay Buchanan (leather works), Natasha Rao (paintings), Elsa Lye (paintings and sculptures) and Sarah Marshall (prints). Their works are diverse in content and processes.

Each has been developing work (loosely) over that last year around the theme and title of the exhibition, Untamed, and they are excited to be showing their collected reflections. * Untamed opens on November 11, 5.30pm, at Studeo, 21 Cross St. Friends, family and anyone new to town is invited to come. The exhibition runs until November 25.

Mr. Thing is a world class DJ capable of rocking a party, in any town, who has performed and toured with DJ Jazzy Jeff, J Live, Marley Marl, Beastie Boys, DJ Premier, DJ Vadim, Run DMC, Slum Village, Mark B and Blade, KRSONE and Jhest. He is also Yungun’s DJ and producer.

Hudge is one of the country’s top DJs as well as the man in charge of Auckland venue, Neck of the Woods. A superb selector over all genres

but with a special love for hip-hop, Hudge returns to Raglan after presiding over one of the more infamous Sunday Sessions two years ago.

Upcoming gigs include the Japanese garage/ punk band The King Brothers who ripped Raglan a new one two years ago. They will be playing Saturday November 19. Friday November 25 has Rubita coming to town to promote thir new EP Brutal yet Dolce Soap. Described as indie pop with jazz leanings Rubita will tour with two other bands.

Saturday 26 sees the return of Surrey Boudit.

These Auckland ska/dancehall/rocksteady/ reggae legends always pack out the Yotty. Expect nothing less.

Saturday December 3 brings local funk merchants Mighty Mighty to the stage, while December 10 will be a huge night as Cornerstone Roots release their new record.

Next week sees the start of regular Sunday Sessions with acts lined up over the season including: The Mad Professor, Norman Jay, My Baby, The Ragga Twins, Awesome Welly band, The Nudge and on the first one (November 20) German techno genius Mad Motor Miquel.

Remember the Yot Club is forced to operate a one way door so you have to be in by midnight.

says Mike Thomson, better known around here as Mickey T, “and from then on – in their eyes - that’s what Raglan is.”

His story of Raglan begins from his day one. Born and raised in Ruapuke, Mickey T might be one of the few true local surfers of Raglan. Back in the day, he was one of the only surfers actually living here.

Mickey’s surfing career kicked off on his 15th birthday in 1971 when he got on his first surfboard. From that moment, he was hooked.

His first job was at an industrial fibreglass shop in Hamilton where he thought he might learn a few skills to help him fix his surfboard. What was meant to be a summer job turned into a two-year stint, but it’s what introduced Mickey to the world of surfboard shaping.

From there his self-taught skills took him to Australia where he glassed on the Gold Coast for a couple of years. He briefly returned to Raglan in the '80s when K.T. introduced him to Gerry Smith, a shaper from the North Shore. It was through that connection that Mickey’s travels turned him into a production glasser and took him to Hawaii and then California–where he discovered a love for riding a longboard.

When he returned from the states in the early '90s, Mickey recognised a lack of longboards being made and surfed in New Zealand. Inspired by the longboard revival in California, he shifted the direction of his craft and started producing longboards.

He also came back to Raglan as the only licensed producer of Bear Surfboards in New Zealand.

Driving past Mickey’s shop on Wainui Road, it’s hard to miss that Bear logo hanging out front of his shop. It’s one of those ‘if you know, you know’ things. But if you don’t know, you probably want to.

The story dates back to 1978 and the movie Big Wednesday. A surfer cultclassic, the film highlights the Malibu surf scene of the '60s and '70s. I paid

my dues with this one when Mickey brought it up and went home to watch it after our chat.

Now Mickey’s signature boards like ‘The Masochist’ and the ‘Matt Johnson’ have taken on a whole new meaning.

When Mickey T arrived back in Raglan with the Bear label, he needed somewhere to shape his boards. So he approached Craig Hughes who had just set up the Raglan Surf Company.

At the time, the Surf Co. factory was located where the current Surf Co. shop sits now–a once coal shed turned truck stop, turned board factory.

It was there that Mickey T started glassing Hughesy’s boards and shaping and glassing his Bear boards on the side.

Mickey worked alongside Hughesy for twelve years. Following the factory from Wainui Road to a move across the causeway where Hughes set up production on Rangitahi Peninsula for a couple of years.

In the early 2000s Mickey T decided to give Raglan Longboards a life and space of its own and he and his partner Sunny opened up their Wainui Road shop around 2009.

“We’re going through a historical turning point where the popularity of surfing is rising each year and the demand for surfboards is increasing around the world. But even your most experienced shaper can’t keep up with that demand,” he says.

“Now days it’s more likely that a surfboard is shaped by computer rather than by hand.”

But with 40 years of shaping under his belt, surfboards is what Mickey T knows best. It’s his driving force and he’s not about the mass production. It’s about taking the time to make custom one-off’s for Raglan Longboards, the Bear label or his signature Mickey T brand.

He reckons he’ll stick to the old fashioned way of shaping by hand for as long as he can.

Catch Mickey T at his Raglan Longboards shop just off Wainui Road on the way to the beach. His showroom is full of his classic longboards and those Bear boards that might make some nostalgic for the good ol’ days.

Health in Your Hands A column connecting with senior citizens in our community

Introducing Pauline Abrahams who retired to Raglan four years ago to be near her daughter and grandchildren. She quickly joined with the local senior groups, teaching crafts to Care and Craft and tutoring encaustic art to children's groups. As secretary for the Community Support Group she became involved with The Raglan Connect festivals.

Pauline is a volunteer for the Raglan Lions and a member of the Senior Techology group and the Writer's Group.

ometimes Raglan’s seniors citizens are missing out on what is going on in the community.

Very few have computers, others find it difficult to keep up with modern technology.

Many do not have access to Google, emails, Facebook, Skype and other social media.

Consequently they are not always able to access local information. Attempts have been made to set up programmes for seniors to learn computer technology, but it is difficult to teach people who don’t have computers or the internet.

Often the pension does not stretch to technology necessities like smartphones, laptops or tablets. Sadly they are missing out on valuable information.

The recent closure of the Westpac Bank highlights this situation. Many seniors do not have internet banking or a credit

card. Westpac has donated a computer to be situated at the Community House and a representative from the bank will be available to help in such matters for the next six weeks. Hopefully the Raglan Chamber of Commerce can give ongoing support to help the elderly to safely deal with their finances.

In June, the Senior Directory was upgraded and launched at the 2016 Connect Festival. The Directory details information about the different senior organisations.

Copies were delivered to groups catering for the elderly and were available at the Raglan House. Unfortunately, Connect 2016 was poorly attended – information about it failed to reach many of our senior residents until after the event, a situation that organisers will address in future. A monthly newsletter and a column in the weekly Chronicle is also a possibility to help keep seniors better informed.

M

any Raglan senior groups – Care and Craft, Community Support Group and Senior Citizens – were started over 30 years ago, before the “Baby Boomers” swelled the ageing population.

Women at that time retired at 60 and were still young enough to run the groups and at the same time support the 80 and 90-yearolds.

By the time people reach 90, many of their relatives and peers have passed away, and the next generation is also slowing down or has even moved on.

With people living longer, particularly women, it is important for the elderly to be involved in socialising and take part in creative brain activities as well as physical exercise. It is wonderful to see keep-fit classes springing up all over Raglan. Despite the detrimental effects of tobacco and overeating, people still smoke and over-indulge.

A correct diet is also important because of

food-related cancers and diabetes. Memory loss such as Alzheimer’s and dementia can develop at any age but is more prevalent in older people. While no-one knows the exact cause, it is thought that chemicals in the home and in food chain and a sedentary lifestyle are major contributing factors.

Parkinson’s disease, mini-strokes, thyroid problems and high blood pressure may also cause forgetfulness.

Eating a healthy diet and keeping active, physically and mentally, may help achieve a sound mind until we are ready to leave this earthly life. Like most problems that are associated with old age, it’s no good waiting until the disability manifests – and non more so than forgetfulness.

Keep the brain busy and practise brain activities, crosswords, Sudoku, jigsaws or hand crafts; join a volunteer group, learn a new skill, draw, paint, write, sing, dance, garden – anything that brings you joy. Eat an apple a day and smell the rosemary, it just could help keep your brain connected.

aglan Town Hall was so packed for

life of panelbeater Craig Purcell, who died suddenly last week at his Park Drive workshop, that about 50 people had to strain to hear from the foyer and footpath.

To passers-by, on Monday, it might have seemed an incredible turnout but then Craig was so much more than a popular local tradie. As MC Ian Mayes observed of Craig’s life, “Man, he packed it in!”

He said Craig’s was a tragic and untimely death – a fatal heart attack at 55 – but “we can learn from his life, he was up for it all … is there anything he didn’t do?”

Sue Kendall, a friend and fellow Laser sailor who gave the eulogy, told of Craig’s childhood in Hillcrest, Hamilton, and how a pedal car “kick-started him into a passion for all things with wheels”. His strength was fixing and making things and he was “full throttle, no fear” into the likes of bike riding, skateboarding, go-karting and waterskiing.

She related how, after learning his trade at a Riverlea Rd panelbeaters from the age of 15, Craig built a house truck and headed to the West Coast to be a hippie. “He had long hair and never grew out of it.”

In 1989 he met his soulmate Jill Lankshear, at a party in Hamilton East, where they danced to Meatloaf’s Bat Out Of Hell.

The couple found themselves making many trips to Raglan – “to see Midge (Marsden)

playing” or for surfing or motorbiking – and Craig became adamant he wanted to live here.

That dream became a reality when Craig sold a prized classic car that allowed him and Jill to put a deposit on a house in Smith St. Both commuted to Hamilton at first but in 2005 a space came up beside Raglan Engineering and Peter Williams persuaded Craig to set up on his own as a panelbeater.

Surfing had taken a back seat in recent times but Craig rediscovered sailing, and spent most weekends either on the harbour or doing motorbike rides around the country.

Sue said Craig and Jill had been “steadfastly looking forward to a possible new direction” when without warning his life ended.

The “Purcell twins”, Craig’s sisters, said they never imagined or expected there would be no more tomorrows for Craig. “For us he was a star and all you good people here (indicating the fire crew in attendance) tried to save him.” Other family members told how Craig was “into everything silly and fun … he was such a big kid at heart”.

A young trail-riding mate told of how Craig “coached me through every single challenge” of one ride after he got left behind, another asked how someone so generous and relaxed could have a sudden heart attack, and a third told how Craig professed to be “amazed at the Government building cycle trails for him to ride his motorbike on”.

A sailing club mate said Craig – the club captain – was a great organiser and fantastic with the kids. “People gravitated to him like a magnet … he was good fun to be around, salt of the earth.”

Hayley Hamilton, who, like Jill, is a member of Jet Collective, said the group’s dos weren’t going to be the same. She told of Craig driving a boat so fast that those “biscuiting” behind were being cartwheeled across the harbour.

Peter Williams said he worked right next door to Craig in Park Drive for 11 years, and people had just “rocked on in” about a week and a half after he nervously started his own panelbeating business.

He said Craig took on projects and, with a good eye and attention to detail, turned them into “amazing finishes”. Some of the vehicles that he worked on – and which were still around town – were masterpieces.

The final tribute was from Jill, Craig’s soulmate: “He was the best person I have ever known.”
