Dear Editor Re: Acts of random kindness I have been lucky enough to have quite a few of these recently. A lady in a late modern car stepped out and presented me with a vest with a Raglan motif.

She said it was for writing these columns. Actually I enjoy doing them. I think the woman was called Valerie. The name struck a bell in my mind. When I was a young man I visited a Valerie who I fancied.

On a visit to this girl – which got me nowhere – I was bitten on the ankle by her pet badger. I didn’t visit again. Girls with possessive badgers are not my type.

The Raglan Valerie’s act of random kindness set me to thinking of other such acts I had benefited from. There was the kind guy in the post office who paid for the stamps and postage on a parcel I was sending. It sped up things on a busy day. You are a gentleman sir.

Another act of kindness was from a lady

who met me as I was about to cross the road with a load of groceries. She helped and checked that I knew my way home. I assured that I did – I’m a sort of two-legged upright homing pigeon, but not so good at flying.

I mentioned these acts because they reminded us to look out for the opportunity to do such kind acts. But be careful.

There is the story of the old lady who was helped to cross the road when she didn’t want to go. The old dear had just been having a rest by leaning on a lamp post. If you do an act of kindness, you will like yourself more.

News in brief: Plane crashes through fence

Safe to resume harbour activities

Last Friday there was a minor plane crash at the Raglan airfield where a small plane crashed into a fence at the end of the runway and stopped in a paddock.

After the 27 May wastewater overflow in Raglan, all activities including fishing, swimming and collection of shellfish can resume from 3 June.

Last Friday, the Ministry of Health advised Council that the advisory signs can come down and normal activity in Raglan can start again.

School instills a love for learning with new way of thinking

e Uku School students recently spent half a day with a camera crew for a news item on growth mindset, a philosophy of teaching that schools are adopting to improve educational outcomes, which aired on Story on Tuesday evening last week.

The school was approached by TV3 after coming on board with the alternative way of thinking just over a month ago.

School principal Rachel Allan says it’s a concept she has been interested in for some years, and, in April, teachers at Te Uku had a two-day workshop on growth mindset with consultant and trainer James Anderson.

The school is embarking on a two or three-year action research project into the educational outcome of the new teaching method.

Growth mindset, which is a simple idea discovered by world-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck, is the

belief that everyone’s most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work, and teaching this view creates a love of learning and resilience that is essential for accomplishment.

The focus is on learning, not the outcome, says Ms Allan.

This is different to a fixed mindset, where people believe intelligence or talent are fixed traits, and that talent alone creates success, without effort.

“It’s not a programme, but a way of thinking,” says Ms Allan, who had decided that a new approach was needed at the school to try and lift the writing achievements of some of its students.

“We are not getting the gains (in writing) with our lower students that we would like.”

However the philosophy is being applied to all areas of education.

ellington based dance company, Le Moana brings their sell-out show 1918 to Raglan this coming Monday 13 June.

1918 was inspired by the devastating story of the 1918 Spanish Influenza that claimed the lives of almost a third of the total population of Samoa, and between 50100 million lives worldwide.

The pandemic came to Samoa via passenger cargo ship, carrying passengers with the highly infectious disease. Due to a lack of health facilities, Samoa was unable to cope with the impact of the disease.

A United Nations report from 1947 ranked the impact of the pandemic in Samoa

as ‘one of the most disastrous epidemics recorded anywhere in the world.’

Because the ship had arrived from Auckland to Apia, survivors blamed New Zealand administration for failing to quarantine the ship. The contention significantly affected the relationship between New Zealand and Samoa administration.

Le Moana Director Tupe Lualua first heard about the Spanish Influenza during her studies at University and started doing more research. She was able to connect the events in Samoa to her Nana, Avea’i Fui who was 4-years-old when the pandemic hit. Tupe worked with Le Moana Choreographer Andy Faionga to bring the story back to life.

Using growth mindset, children are able to choose what they want to learn, with students currently learning how to do the Rubik’s Cube, or a new instrument or language. Students are also asked what they feel they need to know more about in subjects such as maths, and have the choice to opt into different workshops.

Ms Allan says it’s about giving students more voice and choice, and the goal is to have self-directed learning fulltime at the school.

The school has applied for money from the Ministry of Education’s Teacher-led Innovation for its research project, which will focus on the outcomes of growth mindset in the subject of writing.

Ms Allan says the school wants to instill a love for learning in all its students.

“What we know about kids is they can think that if you have to get help in your learning then you are dumb; if other kids know it and you don’t then you are dumb. If a family member says I was good at maths, then you assign that competence to your child.

“There are huge factors that affect learning.

“We are all born with a brain, people aren’t born more intelligent than others.

“Everyone has the same capacity to learn, but there are environmental factors that will influence your intelligence.

“It’s striving for your goals, following your dreams – you just can’t expect to get there without the effort.”

And it’s telling the kids that the “challenges of learning are good”. “When we meet challenges we are learning.”

Ms Allan says the teachers have, so far, only had positive things to say about how the students are responding to the new mindset.

Le Moana is all about telling the story of the Pacific. They embrace the heritage dance practices of Māori, Samoan, Cook Islands and contemporary dance for expression and cultural enrichment. Sharing both the good and the bad unlocks the stories of our past.

“It’s our job as artists to take the audience to the place of the story we are telling,” said Indya Gibbs, Raglan local and Le Moana member.

“Research was the key to this performance. We wanted to take people back to that time. It was interesting learning about it, and going through the journey of how it has affected the other dancers’ family lines.”

The group was also able to take 1918 to Samoa to perform there.

“Performing in Samoa was a surreal experience,” Indya said. “I loved being surrounded by the real culture, it was extra special for me as I studied Siva Samoa for three years, so to be there was amazing. We had some unforgettable shows over there and I will forever be grateful for the trip to Samoa as it reminded me of how much I love doing what I do!”

Le Moana will be performing 1918 at the San Diego Fringe Festival at the end of June. Giving them the opportunity to share this special story and performance with a wider audience.

Take a journey with Le Moana to 1918, Monday 13 June at 7:00pm at the Town Hall. Tickets are $10 at the door and will help the group in their fundraising efforts for San Diego.

young Raglan chef has been as a finalist in the country’s premier vegetarian cooking competition.

Adam Thorley-Symes is up against two other chefs in the breakfast/brunch category of New Zealand Vegetarian Dish Challenge, a contest now in its fifth year and which typically attracts about 200 entries nationwide.

The 24 year old will know next month – when the winners of the three categories are announced – how he has fared with his dish of “beetroot and tofu tian, pressed kumara, herb puree, hazelnut, quince & figs”.

Tofu’s been included in the competition’s ingredients list for the first time this year,

along with falafel and vegetarian bean sausages.

Head judge Mark Wylie, culinary services manager at Compass Group, says there were “some fantastic innovative uses of the new ingredients together with an imaginative and contemporary approach to vegetables”.

Adam, who is working at The Shack, returned to Raglan in April after two years as a chef at a chain of three luxury lodges – Kauri Cliffs at Matauri Bay, Matakauri Lodge in Queenstown and The Farm at Cape Kidnappers.

All finalists in the vegetarian dish challenge receive an excellence award plaque, while each winner gets a special dish, a semi-commercial microwave and a mystery weekend voucher worth $1200.

Matariki's stars to shine at Waikato District Council events The annual Waikato Matariki festival gets underway on June 6, with a variety of events and activities marking the Maaori New Year across the region, including some district-specific events created and/ or supported by the Waikato District Council.

The Council is supporting or providing local events and activities which have been created to demonstrate the traditions of Matariki in the Waikato district. The Council is also encouraging locals to take part in some of the regional activities which are part of the festival. “The Waikato District Council supports our communities as they showcase our district and celebrate their place in the Waikato under the traditional Maaori framework of Matariki,” says Waikato District Mayor, Allan Sanson.

“Our district is home to Waikato-

Tainui and the wider Maaori community and it’s rich in Maaori history, culture and tradition,” says Mayor Sanson. “As well as being informative and entertaining, we hope that our district Matariki activities and events will help to educate, inform and raise awareness of the practices and traditions of Matariki locally and regionally.”

Key events for the district featuring Council’s involvement and/or support include the Matariki menu challenge, ‘Tino Reka te Kai Challenge’; a ‘suitcase’ art exhibition displayed at Council venues; and local artist Wayne Ross’ art installation in the Council’s Ngaruawahia office reception foyer. “Our district libraries are also offering a competition inviting people to write a short story, poem or design a book cover for prizes, which will be presented to the winners in our Council chambers,” says Mayor Sanson.

While Playcentres around New Zealand are celebrating 75 years of families growing together, Raglan Playcentre will be celebrating its fifth year of operation!

An open day and celebration will be held on Wednesday 15th June from 10.00am to 12 noon.

At Raglan Playcentre children do what they do best – PLAY! We offer endless opportunities for children to explore, create, jump, run, get messy and grow. Our focus on child-led learning means each day is about children choosing who, what and where they wish to engage in play. A typical day at Raglan Playcentre would include activities like painting, playdough, playing in the sandpit, collage, carpentry, dress-ups, baking and more!

Anglican Church. With no outdoor space for the children to explore, by 2012, the group found their home in the Raglan Scout Hall on Cliff Street. It was in that same year the building project was initiated and now four years on the sourcing of funding is in its final stages.

If you would like to hear more about the building project and Playcentre in general you are welcome to attend an open evening at Raglan Community House on June 16th from 7.30pm. Yummy treats for supper will be provided, along with good coffee!

New memories are formed every week with Raglan children, parents and volunteers coming together on Wednesday mornings from 9.45am to 12.15pm. Please bring a change of clothes and lunchbox with a water bottle for your young one.

There is always morning tea available along with coffee or tea for the adults. All are Welcome!

The daughters were dominant with the mothers finally getting on the score board at the end of the match when one of the mothers picked up the opposition goalkeeper and carried her across the line while

she was holding the ball. Last year's match was much more even but the difference was put down to fact that the daughters were another year older - and so were the mothers.

Undeterred, the mothers are demanding a return match next month with the possibility of doing some training first.

ity the judges for a show as eclectic as Raglan Art To Wear.

As Wanda Barker – one of four judges who’ve done the job for years now – told a packed town hall on Saturday night, selecting the winners is not only a delight but also an impossibility.

In the end however there could be no controversy over their biggest decision as on the night the same entry – a stunning black outfit made of old video cassette tapes entitled ‘I’ve Always Wanted To Be In Films’ – picked up both the supreme and the people’s choice awards.

The show stealer was the work of flamboyant hairdresser-from-home Gordon Thomas, a recent Raglan arrival who’s spent some time in Canada creating recycled wearable art.

But it was youthful runners-up Charlie Irvin and Sven Seddon who longtime Art To Wear co-ordinator Jean Carbon picked out as “the epitome of what the show is all about”.

The two area school teens have entered the biennial event every year it’s been held, Jean said, but this was the first time they’d put their heads together.

And what they’d come up with – Project Orbiter, an imaginative cyberhelmeted entry in the competition’s Time Travel category – confirmed Jean’s belief that creativity is alive in our community.

“It shows in our children,” she said.

Talking of the difficulties judging such an event, Wanda pointed to the diverse range of competitors “from littlies through to oldies” and the fact there were both “whanau and individual” entries.

The two sellout Saturday shows at 2pm and 7pm kicked off with some haunting harmonies from the five-strong, all-women local group Wandering Dulcet which also performed recently at the Hamilton Fringe Festival.

Then came a procession – in the first category, Middle Earth – of forest fairies and elves, a mythical deer, a huntress clad in leather and fur, Grandmother Oak, a nuclear worm with red flashing eyes and Gollum himself from JRR Tolkien’s ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘Lord of the Rings’. Gollum’s scuttling along the catwalk won Kipp Parker the top child model award.

A larger-than-life Red Riding Hood and a pint-sized child representing Ember of Hope were among finalists

in this year’s featured colour category, Scarlet Fever.

Raglan Childcare – which won the Wild By Nature category for children up to 13 years – paraded an array of littlies in cloaks, capes and wings among a mass of other wildly colourful contenders from forest and sea. The entry also took the children’s supreme award.

Meanwhile in this year’s recycled section, On the Re-Bound, there were the likes of a bizarre bra made of miniature treasure chests by Meg Wilshier from Tamahere – a comment on breast cancer and the need to treasure your chest – and an elegant pantsuit encircled with vacuum cleaner hoses designed by regular Art to Wear standout Liz Hosking.

An outfit entitled Aroma Armor and made by another familiar Art To Wear face – Suzanne Prinz – of 100 silvery aroma sealed coffee bags from Raglan Roast went on to take third in the supreme awards.

The fifth and final section, Time Travel, saw The Travel Wife on the catwalk with her suitcase of “positive baggage” and a young female warrior – vaguely reminiscent of Xena from the American TV series – strutting her stuff in an outfit of orange-and-black ceramic segments held together with bicycle inner tubing.

Sven and Charlie’s Project Orbiter entry and the ‘I’ve Always Wanted To Be In Films’ outfit worn by Reeve Harry-Wright that edged them out for the supreme award were also part of the popular Time Travel category.

Charlie, along with Dekota Johnson who modelled Treasure Your Chest, picked up the top adult model award.

A red carpet live stream to the Old School in Stewart Street – where there was the added attraction of complimentary bubbles and music – saw this year’s evening show beamed simultaneously to another audience beyond the 150-odd who crammed the town hall.

involved along with the Mayor in a Social Sector trial instigated by the Ministry of Social Development which included several Government departments.

This project has been right across the district and has enabled specific support for our youth. Here in Raglan that has meant the establishment of a youth hub (with the support of our school), which has been very successful and supported by the Community.

Unfortunately, this project will end July 1st, but it is our intention to continue with the youth hub here in Raglan. If you would like to help, please contact Bronwyn at the school or myself.

As a sign of our continued popularity as a destination we have had a visit from Regional reserve managers, looking at some of what Raglan has to offer and in the same week we had a conference of librarians. It was a pleasure to welcome them to town.

a series of interviews with local Foodies (people who have an enthusiastic interest in the preparation and consumption of good food)

This week the Chronicle caught up with local foodie Gretchen Hamilton.

How did you become interested in food and cooking?

My family is all about food and my mum and my grandmother are the most incredible cooks, so my life was centred around food and cooking from an early age. I also travelled for 15 years so that interest was fuelled by all the incredible cuisine I was lucky enough to enjoy all over the world.

Who are you inspired by? A foodie relative, a famous chef, a blogger?

Definitely my mum, she is such a talented cook and a lot my memories of childhood are of cooking with her. She has an immense knowledge of cooking and is such an inspiration to me. Also starting a catering company with my sister Sarah when I came back from overseas, she is an amazing and confident cook, so working along side her in the kitchen pushed me give things a go I may not have tried otherwise.

What’s your attitude towards food. Do you have a certain eating philosophy i.e.

Vegan, Paleo or sugar free.

I am definitely more towards the healthier side of cooking. I don't believe in buying any pre packaged foods. The most delicious meals are made from scratch and from fresh produce. I tend to lean towards sugar and gluten free foods because I know how poisoness these things are for us. Also working at Local eatery with Cheryl Beere has pushed me even more in that direction.

Do you follow recipes or do you wing it most of the time?

I am definitely not good at sticking to a recipe. Generally I will wing it or have quick look at a recipe and then do it my own way anyway. I'm not sure this is always a good thing but it works for me most of the time.

I didn’t expect to start this column the same as the last one, with another wastewater leak.

As I have said to the CEO of the district council the two priorities for our town are to keep it tidy and avoid wastewater spilling into the harbo. It is simply not good enough!

The effect on our community is widespread and you deserve better.

If more resources are needed, I will continue to pursue a zero spill philosophy. As your councillor, I find it unacceptable.

On a brighter note can I congratulate Bronwyn Haitana, deputy principal at the Raglan Area School for organising the new school and community digital noticeboard; it will enhance better communication for us all.

Council has a number of hearings coming up, which may be of interest to you.

• Reserves and Beaches Bylaw hearing, 22nd June, 9am to 4pm.

• Trade Waste and Wastewater hearing, 29th June, 9am to 4pm.

• Freedom Camping hearing, 6th July, 9am to 4pm.

Some of the bylaws that are being heard have effect differently across the district and in my time at council, I have been surprised at how so few of our ratepayers attend these events.

I know it might not sound exciting but it is an ideal way to see how democracy works and how councillors interacted with each other. It would be great to see you there.

Since my last column we have had our meeting with ratepayers at Te Mata with the roading allianc. About 40 people attended and were able to speak directly to staff who supervise maintenance of our rural roads. I personally thank those that attended, your feedback is important.

Do you have many failures in the kitchen?

BREAD.....no matter how hard I try I just cannot do it. I failed 'breads' 3 times when I was doing my chef training....yeast just doesn't like me...and I gotta say the feeling is kinda mutual. But it frustrates me as making amazing bread is always something I wanted to do.

Do you eat out ofte? If you do what do you usually go for?

Not as often as I would like. When I lived in Europe I ate out a lot, which was amazing. I go for Asian every time....any type of Asian food...can't get enough of it!

What is your kitchen tool you could not live without?

A decent knife. I get so frustrated when I am cooking in a kitchen that has terrible blunt knives! My friends always joke about how fussy I am with knives!

What ingredients would you bring on a desert island with you - can only choose 3.

We'll number one would have to be butter. Life just wouldn't be worth living with butter. I can thank my mother and grandmother for that addiction! Also pepper..in a pepper grinder...I used to get so much shit from my friends for travelling with my pepper grinder..but it's essential!

Lastly, the best quality truffle oil that money can buy. I am addicted to the stuff!

If you had to go on Masterchef who would you partner up with?

It would have to be my dear friend Shannon Darbyshire, she is the most amazing chef and incredible lady...I hope to do some exciting stuff with her one day!

What’s your go to meal when the cupboards are not well stocked? The something out of nothing meal.

Hmmmm... I am addicted to ramen at the moment and I always have a good supply of

all the Asian sauces etc in my pantry... so it's easy to whip up with almost nothing. As long as I have access to good pork belly and some noodles at hand I am good to go.

What do you usually take to a pot luck?

God I'm usually so busy I'm a bit crap with potluck to be honest... but I love delicious fresh salads packed with loads of goodness and a simple home made dressing!

You can't go wrong.

Can you share a simple recipe with our readers Asian slow cooked pulled pork with coconut rice For the pork • 1/2 cup light soy sauce • 1/2 cup hoisin sauce • 2 tablespoons Siracha chilli sauce • 3 tablespoons rice vinegar • 1/4 cup honey...runny • 3 cloves garlic crushed • 2 tablespoons crushed ginger • 2 teaspoons sesame oil • 1 and a half teaspoons Chinese five spice • 2 kilos pork shoulder or pork scotch fillet Whack all the ingredients in the bottom of the slow cooker and whisk together, then add the pork and roll it around to cover it.

Turn it on over night or for 8 hours, once it's done, pull the pork apart with 2 forks removing the fat etc and shred it. Cover it with glad warp to keep it moist if you are not serving it right away.

With the remaining juice in the bottom of the slow cooker put it in a pan and reduce it till it is thicker...this is a lovely rich sauce....I will sometimes double up on the sauce ingredients so that I can have plenty of the sauce as it's so delicious!

For the coconut rice, this is my sisters amazing recipe!

• 1 tablespoon crushed fresh ginger • 1 stalk lemongrass • 1 cup basmati rice • 1 cup good quality vege stock • 1.5 cups coconut cream • 4 kaffir lime leaves ( de-veined and cut super super thin) • 1 tsp turmeric powder • 1/2 teaspoon salt • Parsley • Shredded coconut to garnish Put all the ingredients into a pot and let it sit for at least 20 mins Then bring to the boil with the lid off Once boiling reduce the heat to as low as possible and cover Simmer til the rice is done, it will be creamy and slightly saucy.

Then stir through the parsley and shredded coconut.

I serve the pork on top of the rice with some steamed Asian greens like bok choy and pour a little of the sauce over the top! Yum!!
