UK ex-pats react to Brexit The United Kingdom has voted to leave the European Union. A referendum was held on Thursday last week, with Leave winning 52 per cent of the votes. The Raglan Chronicle asked British expats their opinion of the Brexit.

Lee Knight: The people voted out for many reasons. The treatment of the elderly and war veterans was appalling.

Non-British citizens were treated better than those who served for their country. The elderly voted leave and people were surprised? The population has been sold out in favour of trade deals, and anyone who spoke out was labelled racist or other callous insults.

Itʼs time for massive shakeup and the elitist politicians need to go.

Paula Clements: I am horrified at what is happening in Britain. I think this is a decision made after one-sided, racist and emotive responses by politicians and the media. It is ill considered and the consequences won't be the hoped for “pure white” colonial Britain to which some are apparently longing to return.

Britain needs, and is part of, Europe and will falter without a joint economy and trade. I felt shocked and saddened by this vote as I read some of the racist responses it has so far engendered.

I believe that the EU will come down very heavily on Britain to discourage others from following suit.

My son has lived and worked in Italy for many years. I have no idea where that will leave him. I understand the disillusionment with politicians, that seems worldwide, but Boris Johnson and Donald Trump are not the solution.

Alex Crane: I feel that in many cases, the vote to leave was not one from a position of knowledge or understanding on ramification, but merely a protest against the morally corrupt structures and processes that comprise most governments. They are voting based on how they feel the UK is changing in ways that they don't like or want.

I don't think that the UK will ever actually leave. With the PM resigning and not seeing the change through, who will take on the job to do this? It will be a thankless task.

The cost to change would be monumental and detract from the other in-house issues already in play. I think that this has been another helpful diversion.

Young Raglan volunteer lifeguard wins top award

aglan Surf Life Saving Club member Tyla Kettle won the Under 19 Surf Lifeguard of the Year award at the Surf Life Saving Northern Region Awards of Excellence held in Auckland on Saturday.

Tyla has worked three seasons as a volunteer lifeguard for the Raglan club, and says winning the award was “definitely a surprise”.

The 18-year-old was involved in a number of high profile search and rescues in Raglan during the summer, including the search for Cory Edgecombe Lilley, who was caught in

a rip at Ngarunui Beach in November. His body has never been found.

“It’s good to know that you are helping people out. It makes you feel good about yourself,” says Tyla, who lives in Hamilton and wants to become a paid surf lifeguard.

Tyla was nominated for the award by a fellow lifeguard after winning the intermediate guard of the year at the Raglan club.

During the summer, when Tyla wasn’t working as a volunteer, she spent time with paid lifeguards and visited other surf lifesaving clubs in an effort to “become a better lifeguard”.

Tyla says she loves being outdoors and the physical nature of being a surf lifeguard.

She says she became interested in becoming a lifeguard after attending a fullday Beach Ed course – a Surf Life Saving NZ safety course for students – in Raglan.

Surf Life Saving Northern Region chief executive Matt Williams says Tyla officially carried out 119 hours of volunteer patrol work, and many more behind the scenes.

“She has taken on roles mentoring younger and newer lifeguards, while constantly looking for ways to upskill herself.”

He says her abilities on the water were a significant asset and she has also found time to take up a role as a surf education instructor.

During the summer, volunteer and paid lifeguards in the northern region made 581 rescues, a 28 per cent increase on the previous year.

The lifeguards collectively worked more than 83,000 hours, and visitor numbers at the beaches totalled more than 453,000 people.

There were no drownings between the flags at the 17 patrolled beaches between Ahipara and Raglan in the northern region.

Manu Bay in study of surf breaks to create national guidelines

R

aglan residents can still have their say online regarding how they value the surf break at Manu Bay after a poor turnout to a stakeholders meeting in town on Saturday.

Surf Break Research, a team of scientists undertaking a three-year scientific research project in New Zealand, is studying iconic surf breaks in New Zealand in order to develop guidelines for their sustainable management.

The project, called Remote Sensing, Classification and Management Guidelines for Surf Breaks of National and Regional Significance, has received about $1.2 million in funding by the Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment. It is hoped that regional councils will adopt the

guidelines as part of the resource consent process for future coastal developments.

Oceanographer Ed Aitken, co-director of Raglan business eCoast Marine Consulting and Research and one of the scientists on the research team, says about half a dozen people turned up to the stakeholders meeting at the Raglan Town Hall on Saturday at 2pm.

The Raglan meeting was the last of six held nationwide to gather information that should be considered when developing the guidelines.

“Those who turned up were really helpful and informative, and asked a lot of questions,” Ed says.

For those who didn’t make the meeting and would like to contribute, there is a quick survey they can complete online

Ed says surfing is becoming more and more popular and a “big, booming industry”.

At present there is little to no data regarding existing wave quality, breaking patterns, physical drivers, recreational use and the socioeconomic importance of New Zealand surf breaks, he says.

“This lack of knowledge makes it difficult for authorities to assess the effects of coastal activities on surf breaks, manage them effectively and uphold the intent of the New Zealand Coastal Policy Statement.

“Resource consent conditions need to be addressing the right things and we don’t know what they are.”

A steering committee has been formed to oversee the project, which includes representatives from Waikato Regional Council and the Department of Conservation.

Research for the project will also include seabed and coastline surveys.

The next step in the project, which began in October last year, is to set up remote camera stations at each of the designated surf breaks.

Ed says a camera for Manu Bay will be put up at a host site in Earl’s Place.

“It’s not a web cam, it’s not for people to view to see if the surf is good. The images are collected, analysed and studied for use for the research.”

“I’m surprised how excited I was to finally have a printed book … the others are all e-books,” she explained to the Chronicle shortly after receiving, hot off the press, the first copies of her latest publication at her Norrie Avenue home.

It would have been a missed opportunity without the books, she said.

Having a physical book in her hands – actually being able to touch it – was something of a new sensation, she added.

“The next goal is to get my e-books and Kindle books to book-books.”

Stephanie’s latest title is all about goal setting using the P.E.R.F.E.C.T. acronym, a strategy she’s devised to make it easy. “I don’t want people to think it’s woo-woo,” she laughs of the material in her latest book.

“It’s not woo-woo stuff, it’s scientific.”

She says she’s incorporated the latest research from neuroscience and quantum physics with spiritual laws, metaphysics and NLP to provide an easily accessible goal setting and goal achievement book.

Setting realistic goals and looking at

them in a holistic way is the key, she says.

It’s no use pursuing a goal at the expense of everything – for instance, losing your family and/or friends along the way.

Nor is it any use setting goals like ‘I want to be confident’ when confidence is a state not a goal, she says.

Then there’s the challenge of maintaining enthusiasm for a goal once it’s been set, to ensure it’s achieved. “It’s no good writing it out and never looking at it again … so things like setting up systems need to be in place … overcoming the hurdles that stop you achieving.”

Having the gear ready for that daily exercise, for instance, is important as is having an “accountability partner” or coach for support, she points out.

Stephanie says being part of a small group of like-minded Raglan women, who meet every Tuesday, helps with her own goals. In fact ‘Goal Setting’, the book, was written this year after discussion with the group around the idea of expanding on an earlier e-book about goals and the traps that get in the way.

The same group of women – including Pisey Leng from Raglan Bakery, who recently launched her bestseller ‘The Wisdom Seeker’ – have organised Stephanie’s official book launch at the Old School next week to coincide with its availability on Amazon, the largest internet-based retailer in the US. The evening event is for anyone who wants to know how to achieve goals but hasn’t been able to, says Stephanie.

A goal she hopes to achieve herself this year is to set up an additional website to that of ‘MetaMorphosis’ through which she coaches and trains people who want to develop either professionally or personally.

Stephanie envisages “more of a blog”, with online coaching and training rather than the face-to-face workshops she’s become known for in Raglan since moving here from Auckland eight years ago.

Government grant allows school to measure success of growth mindset T

e Uku School has been given $50,000 in government funding to research the outcomes of its new teaching practice.

Principal Rachel Allan says she is really pleased with the grant from the Ministry of Education’s Teacher-led Innovation Fund because the school will now be able to measure the success of using growth mindset to improve educational achievement.

“It just allows us to do some things that will have a cost, that we wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise.”

Growth mindset is the belief that everyone’s most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work, and that it’s not talent or natural aptitude that governs success.

Ms Allan says the school started using

this philosophy of teaching a few months ago, when it was decided that a different approach was needed to try and lift the writing achievements of students who weren’t meeting national standards.

The research will focus on the use of growth mindset teaching methods in writing, using a target group of students.

“We are targeting the quality of writing, and instilling a desire to write.

“We are hoping that our investment of growth mindset and our developing understanding of it will result in successful teaching practices in writing.”

Ms Allan says all learning will benefit from the growth mindset teaching practice.

“Hopefully the kids will be able to sense that the teachers are working with them differently.”

The project, which will start in July, will be a mix of quantitative and qualitative

data, including teacher interviews, surveys by children, feedback from parents and academic results.

The funding will enable the school to employ people to help conduct the research.

Ms Allan says Waikato University senior lecturer in education Kerry Earl will be interviewing the teachers and analysing the research.

“I’m feeling really confident,” says Ms Allan.

“This is about changing teaching practices that can be sustainable, that have a positive impact on achievement.”

Te Uku School’s project is one of 46 selected in the second round of the $18 million Teacher-led Innovation Fund, which supports the development of innovative teaching practices.

Hamilton City, Waipa and Waikato District Councils have unveiled a possible agreement to form a ratepayer-owned water company. The tentative agreement, negotiated by nine councillors (three from each council) will be publicly discussed by Waikato District Council on Wednesday (June 29). The other two councils meet in July.

If it goes ahead a joint water organisation will be set up, run by an independent Board of Directors, to manage water and wastewater infrastructure in the region. The organisation would be owned by the three councils, with Hamilton City the biggest shareholder. No other councils or shareholders would be involved.

If each council signs off the agreement, three new councils elected this October will reconsider the issue and decide whether to proceed. By law councils could not make a final decision to form a company until the public are consulted, probably next year.

An independent report received by the councils last year said a single-focused water entity, set up as a council-controlled organisation (CCO) would save more than $100 million over 10 years across the region and unlock major economic advantages. The report also said a water company would focus more strongly on environmental issues and build a more resilient waters network across the region.

Waikato mayor Allan Sanson said the proposed agreement represents “give and take” from all three councils and echoes some “hard conversations” about putting boundaries aside in the best interests of ratepayers and water customers.

“We’re all obliged, by law, to deliver water infrastructure in the most cost-effective and efficient way; there’s no argument about that,” Sanson said.

“The government is sending a very clear message that councils need to up their game in this area. In this region, we’re facing huge growth and will be forced to invest millions of dollars in water infrastructure to cope. We need to be smart in how we do that and to me

it makes sense to leverage economies of scale and do that collaboratively.”

Sanson said Waikato district ratepayers would save $28 million over 10 years by changing the way water and wastewater services were delivered. Under the proposed agreement the councils would retain ownership of stormwater assets, but outsource their management to the CCO. Councils would continue to be directly responsible for all other services they currently provide, including roading.

“Water is just part of our business but it’s a big, very important part. If we get water infrastructure right, and run it as costeffectively and responsibly as we can, our communities succeed. If we don’t, we all lose.”

Sanson said he was aware some people wanted his council to simply “get on with it”. The three councils had already agreed to forming a joint water organisation in principle, but that’s as far as they can go, he said.

“No decisions can be made until the public has had a say – that’s the law and that’s entirely appropriate. Even if we tick this off on Wednesday, the new council elected in October will need to confirm that decision and then go out and consult the public.”

Key elements of a proposed agreement for a Hamilton-Waipa-Waikato water company: • A water company would be a councilcontrolled organisation (CCO) and would be 100 per cent owned by the three councils. There would be no other shareholders.

• The CCO would own the water and waste water assets of each council and would take over all existing water and wastewater related debt.

• The CCO would run water and wastewater on a day-to-day basis. But a Shareholders’ Forum, made up of elected councillors would also set rules about what the CCO could and couldn’t do.

students from Raglan Area School bravely faced the elements and put on their own demonstration to take a stand against child abuse in New Zealand.

"The weather was really cold and stormy, I was surprised so many people turned up. I'm very proud of our community for standing against child abuse and marching for justice for Moko," said student Ngaramai Elliott-Rooney.

The students were joined by members of the community that were taking part in the national March for Moko organised separately by the Sensible Sentencing Trust.

The demonstrations coincided with the sentencing of both of Moko Rangitoheriri’s killers Tania Shailer and David Haerewa.

The pair plead guilty to charges of manslaughter for the death of the three-yearold boy from Taupo.

The couple were each sentenced to 17 years' imprisonment with a minimum sentence of nine years at the Rotorua High Court on Monday.

"The highest sentence imposed in New Zealand for the manslaughter of a child," said Justice Katz, the presiding judge on the case.

This week the Chronicle caught up with local foodie Maree Harris from Dizzy Blocks.

How did you become interested in food and cooking?

Working in hospitality and experimenting on friends and flatmates.

Who are you inspired by ? A foodie relative, a famous chef, a blogger?

I can spend a lot of time browsing food ideas in books and online. My favourites are Margot Henderson, Kitty Travers, Stephanie Alexander and MAD feed.

What’s your attitude towards food. Do you have a certain eating philosophy i.e. Vegan, Paleo or sugar free.

Try everything, make what I have time to make, grow what I can, buy from people who make food they care about, read about what’s in food, then just do my best to keep everyone fed.

Do you follow recipes or do you wing it most of the time?

I usually stick to a recipe the first time, then just keep tweaking it and wing it after that.

Do you have many failures in the kitchen?

I prefer to call them 'opportunities for learning' and yes, many.

Do you eat out often. If you do what do you usually go for?

I wouldn’t say often, but on a menu I’m always looking for ingredients or combinations I’ve never tried before, or things that are just too hard to make at home.

What is your kitchen tool you could not live without?

I need 3: heavy wooden spoon, heatproof spatula and a kitchen whiz/immersion blender.

What ingredients would you bring on a desert island with you - can only choose 3.

Coffee, oats, blueberries.

If you had to go on Masterchef who would you partner up with?

My partner Liam would be the obvious choice,

he is a great chef with loads of technical knowledge, skill and experience. But when Dizzy and I cook together we do a lot of laughing, so maybe I’d take him and we’d just make a big mess and have a whole lot of fun.

What’s your go to meal when the cupboards are not well stocked? The something out of nothing meal.

What do you usually take to a pot luck?

Dizzyblocks!

What do you most enjoy cooking for friends and family?

Puddings, I love them all. Tarts, ice cream, sponges, crumbles, cakes, sorbets….

Can you share a simple recipe with our readers Lemon delicious (or any other citrus) Beat together 175g butter, ¾ cup caster sugar and zest of 2 lemons. mix in 3 egg yolks, then 3T flour and ¾ cup milk. Mix until smooth then add the juice from the lemons and mix until smooth again.

In another bowl whisk the 3 egg whites until they stand up then fold them gently into the batter, don’t overmix. Pour into a buttered dish and put the dish into a roasting tin. Fill the tin with water to halfway up the dish. Cook for 50 minutes at 180.

The Masquerade Ball has become an event not to be missed with a lavishly decorated Town Hall (courtesy of the Raglan Area School Senior Ball the night before), top bands and DJ’s, great drinks and food, and a crowd up for a night of carefree dancing.

The theme this year is the Roaring '20s, so dust off your flapper dresses, bowler hats and Mafioso smoking jackets (for the slackers, masks and props are available at the door).

This year we are lucky to have T.K.W. (playing covers with a maori perspective) and Jamini-I spinning his favourite collection of classic swing tunes and modern beats. With the Town Hall having a 12am noise limit entertainment begins early, so grace the red carpet before 9pm for a drink and canapés on arrival at the bar.
