What are the barriers or difficulties that arise through the process?

On a small block it's not cost effective to buy some of the tools and equipment that are very helpful on farms, so there's a lot of making do. We are very lucky to have great family, friends and neighbours who have been very generous with their time and equipment. I have also found that I wasn't able to put in the time I wanted to on the farm with my family commitments and with the need to take on extra work to supplement our income.

What do you like about the farming way of life?

I love the feeling of space and freedom: of being able to get up early and run up to the top of a hill to watch the sunrise. One of the things I enjoy the most, is going out of the house first thing in the morning and being greeted with lots of excited cheeping from the latest batch of chicks and squeaking from the guinea pig cage. Next I usually hear a welcoming whinnie from the horse paddock, followed by a flash of pink and black as the pigs run squealing towards the gate ready for a feed. As I walk down the lane the pet sheep follow me along and crowd around for a rub, followed by the barn cat who comes out to give me a smooch and guide me to the secret stash of cat biscuits in the shed. I hear the birds in the trees, feel the wind on my face(and often the rain), the air is fresh and the world is a beautiful place.

What are your future plans or goals?

At the moment I will continue as I am with leasing and farming a few of http://www.weathermap.co.nz/?p=ragla our own animals.

As the kids have got older I seem to have turned into a taxi driver so as far as the future goes, I'll just take one week at a time.

Target of zero sewage spills ‘impossible’ – council

here’s zero chance of Raglan having zero sewage spills, the community board was told at its meeting last week.

Waikato District Council service delivery manager Tim Harty, who was grilled by community board members about the incident report on the overflow of untreated wastewater into the harbour during Easter, said a target of zero spills was “impossible”.

“I’m just being open and honest … I was (once) the bloke cleaning the pump stations.”

The report by AECOM New Zealand Ltd, which has been a long time coming for the Raglan Community Board, was tabled at the meeting on Tuesday last week.

The report says pipeline failure was the root cause of the spill, which saw about 38 cubic metres of wastewater enter the harbour estuary near the Marine Parade pump station.

The community board, which is still waiting for a report on a second sewage spill into the harbour on May 26, wants council to be transparent regarding Raglan’s sewage system, and wants assurance that

such spills will not happen again.

Both times, a ban was put on swimming and taking seafood from the harbour, and, thanks to social media, there are community fears that Raglan is becoming better known for its sewage spills than its surf.

At the meeting, councillor Clint Baddeley called for a zero tolerance towards wastewater spills, and said the onus was on council to supply a sewage system that the community could have confidence in.

The report notes that the failed section of pipeline, which was about 40 years old, was badly corroded and leaking.

Although, Waikato District Council takes scheduled replacements of pipes, based on age, criticality, condition and available funding, the failed pipeline was between two newer structures, and was not recorded as “a separate asset”.

Over time, soil had entered the pipeline and had inundated and blocked the pumps.

The report says the pump station did not have the recommended volume of emergency storage, which would increase the time available to take action in the event of pump failure. Ironically, contractors were working on putting in extra storage at the corner of Marine Parade and Nihinihi

Ave at the time of the spill.

The report also notes that had an alarm been programmed into the system, then this would have notified of an impending overflow. A telemetry high level alarm callout function has since been put in.

Mr Harty told the meeting that it was impossible for council to be at all places at the same time, with regards to the workings of Raglan’s complex sewage system.

He said the council mandate, which came from central government, was to have no more than five spills per 1000 connections.

“So it is what it is. We don’t say it is our goal.”

The council had already had 58 overflows this year, he said, which equated to only 0.55 overflows per 1000 connections.

Of those 58 overflows, 47 were “very, very minor”.

“We have zero tolerance to not reporting – even an egg cup full.”

Four of the spills were due to breakages and five were mechanical issues.

Mr Harty said a “lion’s share” of the issues had to do with network blockages.

“You can find almost everything down there.

“No-one is saying this is acceptable. It is a significant disappointment to us all.”

He said the Whitley St spill, just two months after the overflow at Marine Parade, was “demoralising”.

“We put a lot of time and energy into putting systems in place to make sure this doesn’t happen.”

He was expecting a report on the Marine Parade spill from Waikato Regional Council.

Bob MacLeod said he was upset at what Waikato District Council called “an acceptable level” of spills.

Big Belly compacting bin prevents overflow of rubbish

treme Waste has been trialling an expensive solar bin that compacts waste in an effort to control the amount of visitor rubbish in Raglan.

Rick Thorpe, of Xtreme Waste, last week told the Raglan Community Board that the solar Big Belly bin being trialled near the skate ramp at Te Kopua Domain could fit about eight times more rubbish than a standard bin, and therefore didn’t have to be serviced as regularly.

He said the 100-litre bin had a hydraulic motor, which ran on solar power, to compact the waste.

The bin is programmed to send a text message to say when it is half full and three-quarters full.

During the six months that the bin had been trialled for, it only had to be emptied about 1.5 times a week on average, Rick said. Standard bins could be emptied up to 14 times a week in summer.

Rick said the problem with standard bins was that people did not want to put their hands inside to push down their rubbish, so bins quickly overflowed.

Xtreme Waste had worked with Raglan Engineering to put tops on the standard bins but seagulls would still reach underneath to get out the rubbish.

Rick said Raglan would benefit from more solar bins in areas such as the wharf and near Jo’s Takeaways at Te Kopua Domain, where the seagulls are attracted to the rubbish from food.

“But these are expensive things. It costs $11,000 to buy one.”

Another option was to hire the bins, he said.

“If you swapped the 90 odd bins in the

town with Big Belly bins then you could reduce the servicing of them. The cost might come out similar.”

Rick said Xtreme Waste hoped to look at ways to get funding for more Big Belly bins in Raglan.

He said there were 300 Big Belly bins in use in the Thames-Coromandel and Hauraki districts.

whose life was cruelly cut short in 2015 at the hands of his abusive caregivers.

About 20 senior social studies students will demonstrate against child abuse at the water tower on Monday 27 June at 8am, on the same day that Moko Rangitoheriri’s killers are to be sentenced for manslaughter.

The Sensible Sentencing Trust has also organised a national March for Moko to be held on Monday, which could see protests outside every high court in New Zealand.

Year 12 student Mya Leabourne says the class has been following the Moko tragedy as part of their NCEA learning, working on an achievement standard that “requires us to describe a social justice and human rights action”.

Moko died in Taupo hospital on August 10, 2015, after being subjected to repeated sadistic child abuse by his carers, Tania Shailer and David Haerewa. He had been hit, kicked, bitten, thrown, dropped and stomped on.

“We felt so strongly about it we decided we wanted to do something,” says Mya.

In May, after Shailer and Haerewa pleaded guilty to manslaughter, a charge reduced from murder, thousands of people nationwide marched for Moko, who has come to symbolise domestic violence in New Zealand.

The Sensible Sentencing Trust is calling for a royal commission of inquiry into how Moko’s horrific death came to be reduced to the “shallow charge of manslaughter”.

Mya says the student demonstration is to inform the public about New Zealand’s appalling child abuse statistics, and “that something needs to be done about it”.

“We have the fifth worst child abuse record out of 31 OECD countries.

“On average, one child is killed in every five weeks in New Zealand.

“One child is hospitalised every second day from assault, neglect or mistreatment.

“Most abused children are under five, and one-year-olds are at the most risk.

“We have a responsibility to treat people in a humane way.”

Mya says it is everyone’s responsibility to “step up, step out and speak up” if they know a child is being abused.

She says the students have been working hard to make placards for the demonstration, and would appreciate community support at the event.

Social studies teacher Naomi Tovio says after researching the case, her class felt terrible for Moko.

“What the class couldn't understand was how no-one who knew the offenders and the situation could have not known what was going on and spoken out.

“As we were already researching different types of social action, the class decided that child abuse was an issue that they could stand up for and raise awareness of within the Raglan community.”

Ms Tovio says a demonstration is an effective way to inform and educate people.

Organising the demonstration is a learning opportunity for the students, and at the same time they are exercising their human rights and responsibilities, she says.

Competitors warm up again for Karioi Classic

Sunday 30 July is the only day of the year that cyclists rule the roads around Mt Karioi and it's coming up fast.

Wainui Reserve bike trails project gets final tick

It has been a long time coming but the bike trails project in the pine plantation at Wainui Reserve has finally been granted consent from both Waikato District and Regional Councils.

Raglan Mountainbiking Club has also been granted an Authority from Historical Places Trust relating to the existing historical sites located in the pine plantation.

The club had to make sure that the proposed grade 3 level mountainbike trails will not have an impact on the historical areas.

Weather permitting, start of the trail build is planned for early August and would take approximately 7 weeks to complete.

During the works, a Tainui Iwi representative and an Opus archaeologist will be on site for cultural monitoring.

P R O Raglan Mtb club is very excited about this project and hopes that the trails will encourage WDC to develop a better and safer cycling network in the future, to

provide locals, families and visitors the option of exploring Raglan by bicycle instead of by car.

Raglan Public House a little out of the way

T

ried a delicious Kiwi burger – washed down perhaps with a bottle of Moa craft beer – at the Raglan Public House at Ocean Beach yet?

If you haven’t it’s scarcely surprising: this popular restaurant that pays homage to Raglan is located nearly 11,000kms away in the southern Californian city of San Diego, 190km south of Los Angeles on the Pacific coast.

“The Raglan name fits perfectly with our neighbourhood of Ocean Beach since both are considered ‘surf towns’,” Raglan Public House boss Kyle Jaworski explained to the Chronicle this week.

But the eatery isn’t a little bit of Kiwi in name only – its staple menu, Kyle says, is “delicious and unique New Zealand-inspired burgers and sandwiches” and it carries Kiwi beers from Garage Project, Moa, 8 Wired and “whatever else we can get our hands on”.

As for decor, Kyle points out “we have a giant mirror-backed graphic of a surf break in Raglan and also a graphic celebrating the All Blacks”. And the restaurant logo incorporates a representation of our national bird, the kiwi.

The Chronicle learnt of the San Diego restaurant’s existence by chance last week when a tourist jogging up the beach from Raglan Holiday Park, where she was staying, asked a Chronicle staffer to snap a photo of her with our Ocean Beach – or Wainamu, as it’s correctly called – in the background.

She revealed she lived in San Diego’s Ocean Beach where she was a regular at the Raglan Public House.

Kyle says RPH is one of a group of four San Diego restaurants inspired by a high-end burger joint in Queenstown. Two owners of the group travelling through New Zealand on holiday “happened upon Fergburger and fell in love” with its burgers incorporating aiolis, chutneys and fresh-ground, grass-fed beef.

Back stateside, they opened a New Zealand-themed burger restaurant, the Bare Back Grill, at San Diego’s Pacific Beach.

Then, when looking to expand six or so years ago, they decided to name future restaurants after New Zealand towns and cities.

San Diego’s Ocean Beach is described in one online guide as “a great little surf town with a variety of breaks” but another site says it offers only “mediocre” surf. Still, it’s barely an hour’s drive away from the famous surf mecca the Trestles, one of whose point/ reef breaks is included regularly on the WSL world tour.

Dummy bills for water meters With water meters coming into effect in Raglan in July 2017, Waikato District Council will soon be sending out dummy water accounts to all households.

Online potted plants business thrives on shift down to Raglan

he philodendrons, fiddle-leaf fig and fruit salad plants that were all the rage decades ago are back in fashion these days – Jasmine Edgar’s small potted plant business, run from her home in Raglan West, is living proof of that.

“There’s such a demand,” she told the Chronicle of her collection of household plants which started out as a hobby but developed 18 months ago into an online business.

Jasmine’s busy now shipping her leafy specimens to homes, offices, cafes and shops around the country. “I have heaps of South Island customers and a lot from the likes of Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty,” she says of her sprouting workload.

Packaging takes a while, she admits.

After potting and fertilising the plants chosen by customers from her impressive online site Sill Life, this enterprising 39-year-old mother of two packs them up carefully so that no soil falls out and the leaves are not damaged.

“It’s quite a feat sending a two-metre palm to Queenstown,” Jasmine laughs.

But she’s loving what she’s doing after years of nurturing “too many” plants – her collection threatening to take over the family home back in Grey Lynn.

That was when Jasmine, a costume designer, and longtime partner Ian Ferguson, a graphic designer, put their creative heads together and came up with Sill Life – an online startup combining Jasmine’s passion for plants with Ian’s flair for photography and design.

Some good press back then in a couple of contemporary Auckland magazines, and Jasmine was on her way to business success.

“There’s a long line of horticulturalists and botanists in my family,” she explains of her abiding passion for plants.

when sourcing varieties from specialist nurseries to get her business off the ground.

“The big garden centres usually have a monopoly on purchasing plants,” she says, “but now that I’m buying consistently, I’ve found all the nurseries are really supportive.”

Jasmine also propagates some of the smaller plant varieties herself, and since moving down to Raglan from Auckland six months ago she “can’t wait” for the studio and glasshouse being built in her large backyard to be finished. “I’ll make it my little haven,” she enthuses.

The garden shed being converted already houses a potter’s wheel because Jasmine also makes her own range of hand-thrown pots with recycled clay and organic glazes. “I sell my pots and potted plants as a package,” she explains.

Jasmine says she’s dreamt “forever” of finding for her plants and her family a big sunny section like the one she now has in Uenuku Avenue. Its view of the harbour and out to the bar is a bonus.

“We just wonder why we didn’t do it sooner,” she says of the shift that’s taken them out of the rat-race. “Everything’s just fallen into place.”

She spends her days now happily potting plants and throwing the odd pot – returning once every six weeks or so to Auckland for jobs that come up in the fashion industry – while Ian too works from home as a designer for his own company Friends of Design and also gets to surf more regularly.

Their boys Dustin, 8, and Ace, 6, bus to Te Uku School but are spending much of their spare time at the Te Kopua skatepark.

Jasmine’s hopeful the trend back to household plants will continue to grow, so convinced is she that bringing the outdoors in has healthy spin-offs.

“There have been so many studies done on the benefits of plant-related air purification,” she says. “And there is a feeling of wellbeing that plants add to your living environment.”

o matter how much of the essential elements of strength, power or speed you’ve built, you’re going to find that your joints slowly degrade, your body gradually falls apart, and you move like an awkward stork unless you also optimize your mobility.

What is mobility training?

Mobility refers to your ability to move your body and limbs freely and painlessly through your desired movement.

So how do you increase mobility?

There are three key mobility enhancing strategies that you can easily learn and incorporate: dynamic stretching, deep tissue work, and traction.

1. Dynamic Stretching: When you’re dynamic stretching you’re not just “pulling on” a specific muscle group like you do when static stretching. Instead, dynamic stretching incorporates posture control, stability, balance, and even ballistic and explosive movements such as swings and kicks.

Leg Swings: Hold on to a wall, bar, or anything else that adds support. Swing one leg out to the side, then swing it back across your body in front of your other leg. Repeat 10 times on each side.

2. “Deep tissue work” is any type of stimulation that works deep into your muscles and connective tissue, such as massage or foam rolling. Even simply using a tennis ball, lacrosse ball or golf ball to dig into tight or sore spots works really well.

If you look down Bow Street on any given day throughout summer, you’re sure to see a long queue winding its way out of Roll Up–Young and old anxiously waiting for that sweet treat to cool them off.

Roll Up has been in the care of Teresa and her girls for the past three years. Offering up 19 tasty flavours of ice cream, as well as smoothies and their specialty real fruit ice creams made with fresh fruit.

In addition to the ice cream and wraps, Teresa introduced burritos to the menu, which quickly became a local favourite.

In 2014 they extended the shop and opened up the back for food orders. Accessed via Volcom Lane, the space has been transformed

into a small sitting area, surrounded by a miniature garden. Grapes and tomatoes can be seen growing up the walls in the summer, and green chillies and more filling in-between.

Even though there are only a handful of items on the menu, I still find myself debating between a burrito or a wrap (extreme style, of course) …and then the dilemma of having either one made up as a salad. But my usual goto when I just can’t make up my mind is an extreme lamb salad with mint and sweet chilli sauce. Hits the spot every time.

Another addition to the menu is Teresa’s infamous Southwest Chicken Soup. Brought back each year when the weather cools off, along with the beef and veggie chillies. You’ll also find a soup special on order–a most recent favourite was the Onion Soup.

This week’s lunch featured the chicken burrito salad with a small cup of the veggie chilli on the side. Both topped off with cilantro and tomatoes, fresh avocado and freshly picked chillies from the garden. It was my first time trying the veggie chilli, and by the time my spoon hit the bottom, I was wishing for more. If you find yourself feeling a bit under the weather, ask her for extra chillies on the top of your order, it’s bound to take care of any little winter time bug.

Teresa recently started using free range chicken, and gets as much locally from Jon Wok as she can. Paired with a few of her secret ingredients, from the wraps to the soups, you’ll get a mouthful of flavour with every bite.

Whether you are taking care of your sweet tooth with a real fruit ice cream in front, or you’re after a filling lunch, Roll Up has something for everyone. Pop by Tuesday to Sunday from 11am to find your favourite Roll Up fix.

I have been tasked to set up a photo display for the upcoming Raglan School 150th Jubilee over Labour weekend and am looking to source photos that reflect the school and its past.
