Dear Editor Next to the sea, I love to dance. It is good exercise and practice at keeping my balance. Falls are a danger as we age. I remember an old lady getting out of the car, toppling over and saying, “that’s it”.

And sure enough soon after that she was taken into a rest home hospital and eventually died there. I tried to get dancing into the exercise group for the over 50s age group but with very limited success.

Second sewage spill in two months ‘not good enough’

This time, they “were on to it immediately and we were all informed”, Mr Vink says.

Signs were put in place last Friday advising the community not to swim, fi sh or collect shellfi sh in Raglan Harbour until further notice.

Council has been undertaking daily testing of water in the harbour since Friday, with confi rmed results available later this week.

“These results will tell us how long the advisory signs need to be in place for.”

Council is now preparing a report on the latest spill, which will also be shared with the community board and key stakeholders.

aglan’s firefighting couple R has proved their metal at the Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge in Auckland.

Leanna Darby and Dan Mills each won their respective age groups in the Firefi ghter of Steel category, with Leanna being the fastest woman overall.

Leanna says only 45 people were crazy enough to enter the Firefi ghter of Steel category of the challenge, which last Saturday saw 850 fi refi ghters climb 1103 fl ights of stairs kitted out in full uniform, including helmet, masks, oxygen tanks, gloves and steel-plated gumboots.

The Steel category is new and acknowledges the effort it takes to lug a steel oxygen cylinder up all those stairs as opposed to a carbon fi bre one, which is about 9 kilograms lighter. The Raglan brigade uses steel oxygen tanks, so that is what its volunteer fi refi ghters train with.

“People racing in steel also have considerably less air to breathe from the cylinder than people wearing carbon cylinders,” says Leanna.

“To get to the top of Sky Tower with

enough air in a steel cylinder is a challenge, whereas people wearing carbon don’t come anywhere close to running out of air.”

She says with the steel cylinders the air will start to run out anywhere between the 35th and 44th fl oor, and there are 51 fl ights in the competition.

“A whistle on our set starts telling us we are running out.

“This, mentally, is very unnerving and adds to the psychological challenge of the race … when we breathe (with low oxygen) we have to physically suck in the air, which is unnatural and makes breathing diffi cult.

It adds strain to the chest muscles and is doubly hard given your body is extremely hot due to wearing our full fi refi ghting gear.”

Add to that the burning sensation of the legs from climbing all those stairs in kit weighing 25kg.

Both Dan and Leanna say the mental challenge of the race is just as great as the physical.

“It is a race of over-riding your brain and not listening to your body,” says Leanna. “You have to fi ght any feelings

He says it’s been a bit of a joke that Leanna got “a really cool trophy” for her winning effort and he didn’t get anything – although that is because she was the fastest woman in steel, overall, while some of the younger guys “really slaughtered it”.

Kris went to the local area school from the age of fi ve until commuting to Hamilton Boys High as a teenager. From there he headed to Victoria University in Wellington with “not much idea” of what to do next.

But having written a couple of “halfway decent” stories for a student magazine, he headed to Massey School of Journalism for a year’s post-grad study. That led to a job as reporter on the South Waikato News in Tokoroa, followed by the obligatory OE. On his return in 2005, Kris scored the place at Kapi-Mana News. “I haven’t moved on from community news (to daily news),” he says, “because I just love it.”

electric guitar, drums. It’s not something that is mainstream, it’s a fresh sound, says Mr Skandera.

Also “there is an honest, authentic, unpretentious aspect to their music and to what they are portraying … they are not trying to copy anyone”.

They are “sweet honest authentic kids who love what they are doing. Their music is positive and uplifting – they haven’t hit the teenage years of darkness”.

Founder and director Glenn Common

says: “The 12 bands going on to the fi nals need to practise hard, craft their set, get their supporters rallied and make good use of networking opportunities and social media to promote themselves and their achievements.”

The Waikato regional fi nal is on Saturday, June 25, at Clarence Street Theatre.

The national fi nal is on September 24.

Winning prizes include $22,000 in Rockshop vouchers and a $20,000 NZ on Air recording package.

Students lead charge in backyard trapping programme

I

n just two weeks, students have killed 60 rats in 25 traps set up at Raglan Area School.

With this number in mind, imagine how many rats live within Raglan’s residential zone, says Karioi Maunga project co-ordinator Kristel Van Houte.

“There would be thousands and thousands.”

The work by the young trappers is part of a new, backyard, trapping programme that Karioi Maunga is bringing to the Raglan community.

Karioi Maunga already has 2000 hectares of traplines on the mountain, which are regularly checked by many volunteers.

Kristel says the Maunga trust also works with private landowners around the mountain to keep on top of pests, and it makes sense to extend the predator control to town, to help bring back the dawn chorus to full noise.

“Even people who aren’t into conservation work, climbing mountains and getting dirty, can do it. They don’t have to go anywhere … everyone can contribute by having a trap in their backyard.”

Kristel says there has been an amazing response by Raglan residents since the school got on board with trapping.

“More and more people are coming to us with rat problems,” says Kristel.

“And the effort of one or two traps on your property is minimal.

“Unless the community does something this ecosystem is not

going to do well. The work we are doing, we are making a difference.

If we weren’t doing this then there would be a 1080 drop every seven to eight years and that’s it.

“If we weren’t doing anything we wouldn’t even hear the birds.”

In the fi rst night of setting their traps, the students caught 16 rats.

The next night they got 11. In two weeks they had trapped 60 rats and one stoat.

Year 8 teacher Pete Maloney says Kristel and her team were a huge help in setting up the trapline, and it has been a real education for his students.

The students built the traps themselves, mapped out the traplines using GPS, and record and graph the data of their catch.

“The best thing has been seeing all students gaining self-management skills. They go out onto the trapline in small groups of four and as a group they are responsible for checking, resetting and recording.

“For kids not keen on the trapping there is a group that monitors the birdlife on the peninsula and another group of students that work on educating the wider school using power points and demonstrations.”

The Year 8 class says they are amazed at how many rats they have caught in their traps, and how many there are in the school area.

Student Oceanah Gavin Brightwell says after seeing the results she thinks everyone should get behind the Karioi Backyard project.

“Just being able to kill off the rats

around our school doesn't mean the problem’s solved. If we really want to help save our native birds then the majority of the community has to help. Rats move around and we need to be prepared.”

Student Karis Soanes says the trapping programme has taught her how fast rats can reproduce in such a short time – up to four times a year, with as many as 10 babies at a time.

“These rats are pests so the sooner the town has been rid of them the better, so it would be awesome if everyone pitches in,” Karis says.

Leah Maybee-Waitere says apart from killing birdlife, rats “carry a disease called leptospirosis, which is harmful to humans and can make us very sick”.

Sacha Patterson says the trapping programme has taught the class a lot about the environment and given them skills for the future.

“We also wanted to stop the rodents from breeding and coming into our school.”

The programme, an extension of Karioi Kids, engages young people in hands-on conservation and environmental science through place-based experiential learning. Activities are based around Mt Karioi, with a focus on water, land and sea. The programme encourages students to explore the natural world and apply their learning to local actions for a more sustainable future. The young rangers, aged between 9-13 years old, will connect with local professionals who work in environmental scientists, to inspire future learning and work opportunities in that fi eld.

A true cross country event

Despite some of the wettest weather we've seen lately, last Friday, Waitetuna School forged ahead with hosting six other schools for the Western Waikato Rural Cluster Schools cross country race.

students were cheering and encouraging students from all different schools. With the mud, there were men from the Watietuna community pushing out car after car from the mud bath that formed in the paddock.
