Dear Editor Cuba and Love I was wondering what to write on today but a chance encounter with a stranger in the supermarket set me off on a wave of nostalgia and a few tears of gratitude to whoever for granting me a long and varied life.

The stranger was particularly interested in the girl I met in a bar and have never forgotten, except her name – it’s a blank. Let’s call her Chicita. It was dark when it was time to return to my ship. And not all Cubans were so friendly.

My Chicita offered me a rest until dawn in her little room. Although I’d met her in a bar, there was a prominent picture of Jesus on the wall and she genuflected as we entered.

Waikato Regional Council supports Mt Karioi Project

Mt. Karioi Project's main focus is to protect seabirds like oi, also known as grey-faced petrel, that nest on the coastal cliffs around Karioi.

R been given a funding boost of aglan’s Mt Karioi Project has

$429,000 over four years from Waikato Regional Council.

Project coordinator Kristel Van Houte says she cried when she was given the

news that the council had accepted her application to the natural heritage fund.

“After seven years of slogging it out it was like oh my gosh we are finally getting somewhere. It’s amazing to get that support and acknowledgement after thousands of hours of voluntary work.”

Mt Karioi Project’s key focus is to help protect the grey-faced petrel – a seabird also known as oi – which nests on the coastal cliffs around Mt Karioi.

The funding will go towards ongoing predator control of 2000 hectares around the mountain and expanding the trapping network into the backyards of Raglan residents.

Kristel says she had worked on the application for a year and had got everything she had asked for, which is “40-50 per cent of what we think will be our budget”.

“We now have some real sustainability and time to build up other funding.”

In the past year, volunteers have put more than 3000 hours into the Mt Karioi Project.

Kristel says council will get a massive return for its investment because of all the work that is being done by volunteers.

WRC natural heritage team leader Alan Saunders says the financial assistance begins a new chapter in the council’s support of work to restore Karioi’s coastal ecosystem and forest.

“The Karioi project is unique in its mountain to sea connectivity, and particularly for its coastal forest and focus on seabirds,” he says.

“Our funding will particularly help support large scale pest control of stoats, rats and feral cats that will restore seabird populations in the area.”

The couple has owned small dairies in the past but have been trying to get involved in the grocery market, when the opportunity arrived to purchase the Four Square.

Satnam is looking forward to developing the store and improving the range of products.

“If there is anything the community wants, we hope that they will ask,” he said.

The couple has plans to get more involved with the community as well, engaging and supporting in various ways.

Over the coming week the Four Square will be supporting Plastic Bag Free Raglan, giving out their green Four Square bag to customers looking to cutback on their single-use plastic bag use.

The concert-cum-visual feast is coming to town largely as a result of professional photographer Mark Hamilton’s links with Raglan’s creative community in recent years through the likes of SoundSplash and Raglan Art To Wear.

“I felt that, roots and reggae music aside, a Raglan audience could appreciate Dylan,” Mark told the Chronicle on a quick visit with musician Dave White to put up posters around town. “It’s an arty community out here.”

“Raglan’s an absolute cultural mecca,” chimed in Dave, whose five-piece combo ‘The Zimmer Twins’ [Dylan was born Robert Zimmerman] will in his words “inhabit the riffs and words of the poet priest” with an eclectic set of tunes.

The show – whose name Fog & Amphetamime borrows from a line in the 1960s Dylan classic “Just Like a Woman” – is the culmination of a

Council to consider draft Freedom Camping Bylaw A draft Freedom Camping Bylaw will be considered at the Waikato District Council meeting in September.

A hearing of the proposed bylaw was held on July 6, and on Tuesday last week the council’s Policy and Regulatory Committee deliberated on the oral and written submissions.

WDC customer support general manager Sue Duignan said during deliberation, the committee had identified that some changes needed to be made to the proposed bylaw as a result of the submissions.

The changes included: removing the permitted areas from Raglan; prohibiting camping from the Raglan CBD and other areas where problems had been identified; including clear wording regarding council’s intent to allow self-contained campers to freedom camp for up to three days unless the area

project that began about 2½ years ago when Mark came up with the idea of combining Dylan lyrics with his visual imagery through a series of photos.

“The Dylan biographical musical ‘I’m Not There’ was the catalyst – in particular the scene (in the movie) where Richard Gere played Billy The Kid in the town of Riddle with its menagerie of townsfolk characters,” Mark explains.

Each of his photographic portraits represents a character found within Dylan songs.

“I shot all the pics in different locations – for instance my mother-in-law out in the country, others outside the Huntly power station and the Matangi dairy factory. I found the location that suited the character.”

He hopes his exhibition of these images – which will show at the town hall along with a projection and light boxes – will take the audience through an imagined landscape in which they stumble upon various characters found within the lines of the songs.

Dave adds his Dylan tribute band finds the whole experience exciting. “It’s amazing to play among the characters, to combine the lyrics and images. It’s a nice sonic and visual combination.”

He says the playlist will feature heavy hitters such as ‘Tangled up in Blue’, ‘Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I’ll Go Mine)’, ‘Ballad of a Thin Man’ and ‘It Takes a lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry’ – plus other “sneaky Zimmer surprises”.

The five band members are seasoned hands from the Hamilton scene and reckon their collective music experience probably adds up to Dylan’s current age. “The images are sub-par but the band’s a killer,” Mark jokes.

Bob Dylan, incidentally, has seen for himself Mark’s character portraits as they were hanging in his dressing room area when he performed at Claudelands Arena two years ago. It was “cool” to know Dylan stood in the corridor looking at the works, he says. “But the man himself didn’t offer millions!” ● Fog & Amphetamine plays 7.30pm Saturday July 23 at the Raglan Town Hall. Entry fee is $10.

is prohibited; clarifying that non self-contained vehicles are only permitted to camp in certain locations for up to two days; expanding the definition of self-contained vehicle to ensure that the bylaw can take into account subsequent amendments to the standard; and removing the ability for council to make changes to areas by resolution.

Council received 90 submissions on the proposed bylaw: 50 against, 29 for and 11 neutral.

There were 24 submitters to the freedom camping bylaw that had wished to be heard at the hearing, including 14 submitters from Raglan.

The committee also discussed the need for enforcement and good signage, and promoting the controls for freedom camping in the district.

It is recommending the draft bylaw at the council meeting on September 12.

St John Raglan presentation On Monday 11th July, St John Raglan had a presentation to two members of the team at the station.

Frontline officers Andrea Gilshnan and Carol Millar were given their National Diploma Certificates and badges by Station Manager Bush Barton, also present were Waitomo Territory Manager Hugh Davison and the rest of the Raglan team.

This is a great effort done by these two officers, which took a great deal of study and commitment to gain authority to practise at Emergency Medical Technician level.

Karioi Classic’s number one reigns over mountain

H

e’s never won the official title and is unlikely ever to, even by his own admission, but Mark Reynolds is the real King of the Mountain.

The 53-year-old Raglan resident has entered every single Karioi Classic cycling race, of which the winners earn the title of King and Queen of Karioi, and more than likely holds the unofficial record for the person who has cycled the most times around the mountain.

“I presume I have been around more times than anyone else,” says Mark who has done the 43km course once a week for the past six years – about 300 times by his guesstimate.

“Someone else might have gone around on a Penny Farthing back in 1865, of course … I have no way of knowing for sure.”

Mark, who plasters his mouth in white zink for every ride, has entered every Karioi Classic since it started in 2010, and even has lifetime rights to the No 1 bib. He doesn’t take it off his bike, ever.

“He’s our number one,” says Karioi Classic organiser Dirk De Ruysscher, of their most loyal competitor.

Mark was the first to register for this year’s race, which is on Sunday next week with a few changes to the lineup.

This year the organisers have introduced a new 85km race, due to demand from competitors, along with the standard 43km course and

a 57km route. In another change, all cyclists will be going anticlockwise around the mountain.

Dirk says he’s confident of having at least 300 competitors, most from out of town, and is hoping for about 400.

Among those who have already registered are 2013 single speed world champion Garth Weinberg, from Rotorua, and ironman triathlete Erin Furniss, from Hamilton.

The oldest competitor to have registered so far is 74 and the youngest is 10.

As usual, Mark will be competing in the 43km event, which is his regular weekly route.

“I see it as being six hills,” says Mark.

“I have the advantage over Aucklanders of knowing when the top of the hills are coming so I can put all my energy into them.”

His fastest time is two hours and eight minutes, “but the best do it in about one and half hours”.

“I’m tending towards getting slower every year,” he admits, but on race days he goes much faster than on his solo missions.

“I just get taken over by a demon of competitiveness … and still don’t get close to winning anything in my age group,” he laughs.

“They’re in a different league to me.”

Mark is definitely in a league of his own.

While out on his weekly training session - rain, wind or shine - he

is well known for stopping to take photos of roadkill which he will later post on his Facebook page.

He listens to talking books through headphones – recent topics have included the founder of Nike and something on domesticated animals While riding, he likes to imagine Karioi in the old days, a volcano spewing lava everywhere, or what it might have been like around the coast in pre-European times, with maybe some moa on the track or something like the giant Haast’s eagle flying by.

“I’m not a religious person, but I feel a real connection with that mountain,” he says.

With all that day dreaming going on one might think he’d have had his fair share of accidents in six years of riding on gravel roads, but there has only been one, and it was on tarseal.

“I smashed all my teeth out … I was listening to Lily Allen.”

She was talking about cricket, not singing, and Mark says it was just a “freak accident” – there may have been some oil on the road.

“I had $6000 of ACC done on my teeth.”

Mark stresses that it’s not a dangerous ride and he would recommend the race to all keen cyclists.

Just don’t go off half-cocked and unprepared for what the weather might throw at you, like he did a couple of weeks ago.

“I got caught in really wet, cold weather and couldn’t feel my hands or change the gears. When I got home I sat in the bath for two hours to recover, and got a cold.

“Obviously … at this time of the year you have got to make sure you are adequately dressed for it, but it’s a really satisfying thing to do.”

For Mark, who moved to New Zealand from England in 1997, there are a number of reasons why he bikes around the mountain.

For starters, “it’s really beautiful” and remote.

“On that western side the views are just outstanding.

“Often there is just a bunch of livestock on the road, and you might see the odd farmbike, but other than that there is no one else there.

“If that beautiful scenery was in England it would be busy as, but people hardly know it exists.”

It is a demanding ride, he says, and that takes us to another very important reason why Mark does it.

“I just want to be fit enough to keep drinking beer and eat fatty food. It gives me the licence to spend the rest of my time enjoying life’s pleasures.” * The annual Karioi Classic is on Sunday, July 31. The races start in Stewart St, with staggered starts of 8.30am (85km), 9.30am (57km) and 10.15am (43km). All cyclists will be travelling anticlockwise around Karioi. There will be road closures from 7.30am to 2pm: Whaanga Rd, Ruapuke Rd, Tuturimu Rd, Matawha Rd, Waimaori Rd, Waimaunga Rd and Te Hutewai Rd. Traffic can travel in race direction but not against.

After completing her diploma in therapeutic massage with remedial body therapies in 2010, she has worked in leading spas worldwide, and as a dedicated therapist on private yachts. The conditions on land were just as cold and wet as being in the icy water, so it was a quick in and out, straight into the car and home for most involved.

Lucy’s latest qualification as a specialist with ‘Un-Cruise Adventures’ – which offers upscale small ship experiences to the likes of Alaska, Columbia and Snake Rivers, Coastal Washington, British Columbia, Costa Rica, Panama and the Galapagos Islands – has really broadened her horizons.

Now from her small home office in Lorenzen Bay Road, Lucy can put together “amazing” wildlife adventures – for instance, for travellers who want to explore exotic locations not accessible to larger ships.

They might go whale watching from a yacht’s bow or bridge in the Humpback National Marine Sanctuary off the Hawaiian Islands, or snorkelling at night with Giant Pacific Manta rays.

Motors are turned off, she says, and travellers go out in skiffs to “interact” with ocean life.

In the Sea of Cortes there’s the chance to get up close and personal with dolphins, sea lions and whale sharks, Lucy adds, or the

opportunity to snorkel with seal pups.

Un-Cruise Adventures promotes a smallgroup alternative to traditional cruising, she told the Chronicle.

And her recently completed online Adventurist certification with the company “adds variety to what I can offer”.

Having worked within the industry for more than 15 years, Lucy is passionate about promoting local tourism too. “Raglan is an awesome adventure destination,” the ex-pat Brit enthuses of the town she’s called home for two years now.

She likes horse-riding on the beach but points to a myriad of other opportunities available including kitesurfing, windsurfing and sand-yachting. “It’s an amazing place to bring people to … I love to work from, live in and represent Raglan.”

Lucy’s currently putting together a travel package for a local surfing couple who are keen to get close to the huge breaks off the coast of Fiji, which means arranging outer island transfers that can otherwise be stressful for today’s travellers in a world of endless websites, online bookings and remote checkins.

Her wide range of experience means that travellers’ plans are limited only by their imagination. Nominations for candidates wanting to stand in this year’s Waikato district elections have now opened.

Waikato District Council’s Electoral Officer, Dale Ofsoske says anyone wanting to stand as a candidate for Waikato District Council or for their community board should get their nominations in now.

Nominations close at noon on Friday 12 August.

“We are encouraging anyone who wants to make a difference in the local community to stand,” says Mr Ofsoske “This is your chance to shape your community and make sure it is not overlooked.

Mayors and councillors exercise a leadership

role in our towns, cities and regions and represent the views of the community.

“We need a range of elected members of different ages, ethnicities and backgrounds to ensure our council represents the diversity of our community. Anyone over the age of 18 can stand for election as long as they are a New Zealand citizen and enrolled on the electoral roll.”

Voting papers will be sent out from 16 September 2016 and must be received by the council before midday on Election Day, 8 October 2016.

“To encourage more people to put their names forward, our Council is also holding a candidate information evening at 6pm on Tuesday, 19 July in the Council Chambers in Ngaruawahia,” says Mr Ofsoske.
