Dear Editor Recently our two adult granddaughters and a friend visited us from Wellington for a long weekend, 14th to 18th January. On Friday 15th they had a lesson with the local Karioi Surf School a cost of $89 each and went to the Ngarunui Beach to surf.

They parked in the car park at the Surf Club as there was sufficient parking that day.

On Sunday they decided to go surfing again, hiring wetsuits and a board at a cost of $45 each but could find no parking at Ngarunui Surf Club or anywhere in the area. Being nowhere at all to park they parked on the side of the road going down to the car park along with a number of other vehicles. As there were double yellow lines they parked as far as possible to the left with only one set of wheels just over the yellow lines. There was adequate room if emergency vehicles needed to pass through.

On arriving back to their vehicle they found a parking ticket on the

windscreen for an amount of $60 issued by the Police. They were disappointed but as they had parked near the yellow lines they accepted the fact that they had parked illegally and would have to pay the fine. Then to their utter amazement they discovered another parking ticket from the Council for another $60, on the windscreen as well.

I find this absolutely appalling that our local Council are double dipping.

Do they not want paying visitors to visit our community? These young adults had spent a considerable sum learning to surf, hiring equipment and celebrating a birthday dinner for one of their group at the local Hotel and also spent money on food and other items bringing revenue to our town.

Before next summer Council need to get their act together and provide more parking in the Ngarunui Surf Club area. As for double dipping, shame on you Council this is a disgusting way to treat visitors to our town.

Visitors see Raglan verging on its worst

Not extinct after all: this mower was sighted at work about town early this week.

Grass verges and other open spaces in various parts of town have become badly overgrown with long grass and weeds at the very time of year many might want Raglan to be looking its best.

Raglan’s shoddy appearance over summer seems linked in some way to friction between the Waikato District Council and Strada Corporation, its own CCO or council-controlled organisation.

Strada lost its contract for the upkeep of Raglan and other Waikato district roads

about the middle of last year, with the council instead confirming Downer NZ as its preferred partner for road maintenance services.

The lack of regular – if any – mowing about town in recent months comes in the wake of Strada’s unceremonious dumping and the formation of the new “alliance” with Downer, as council describes the unusually close relationship in which some vehicles now carry both WDC and Downer names on their doors.

Raglan ward councillor Clint Baddeley confirmed to the Chronicle last Thursday that the state of verges around town related to “some issues with the previous contractor Strada for a while”.

World champs a family affair for Raglan family

Mum Jocelyn Hartstone, daughters Amber Hartstone and Lana Herbert, and Lana’s husband, Conan Herbert, are all paddling in teams that qualified for the IVF World Club Championships and the IVF Elite World Championships at the sprint nationals at Lake Karapiro last weekend.

The Whaingaroa Whānau Hoe Waka W6 (six paddlers) premier women’s team, which includes Lana and Amber, came fourth in the 500m and sixth in the 1500m, which sees them through to world club championships at the Sunshine Coast, Australia, in May. Jocelyn competed in a W6 golden masters team from Waitakere Outrigger Canoe Club, which won gold in the 500m and silver in the 1000m, also qualifying for the worlds; while Conan, who paddles for Nga Hoe Horo Outrigger Canoe Club, has been selected to represent New Zealand at the IVF World Elite Championships and qualified with his W6 premier men’s team to compete in the world club champs.

Lana says waka ama is a great family sport because almost anyone can paddle, and the events are family-friendly, healthy and smoke-free. Contestants at the nationals ranged in age from 5 to 74.

She says the six paddlers in her Raglan premier women’s team will be contesting the world club champs in Australia in May, representing the Raglan club.

The other team members are Mellissa Rangiawha, Haidee Rangiawha, Teresa Waitere and Courtney Johansen (Huntly).

Sprint Nationals, which ran for a week from January 18-24, won a spot at the worlds. The Raglan club had seven teams competing.

“It has been our goal to qualify for the worlds since early 2015 so we had a plan.

There were some really good teams that we beat,” says Lana.

She says that although it’s not surprising that they qualified because they are a strong team, it was still a relief.

“It has been a lot of juggling work, family and paddling, and four of us in the team have been coaching the other women's and girls’ teams.”

Lana says they would like to improve their times in Australia.

“The canoes are a lot different in Australia. The lanes are narrower so we have a lot of technical things to work on such as race turns before we go.”

Conan was named in a team of 13 paddlers to represent New Zealand at the IVF World Elite Championships, to be held at the same time as the world club championships.

He was selected after attending two gruelling trial weekends in October and November, where 30 contenders completed a number of on-water and off-water tests, including W1 distances of 10 kilometres and 500m, and W6 paddling. He also attended a couple of training camps.

His team, Herberts on Tour, also qualified for the world club champs after coming third in the premier men’s W6 1500m and sixth in the 500m.

Meanwhile, Raglan man Wayne Trott came second in the straight finals of the adaptive men’s W1 (one-man) 250m at the sprint nationals.

t's been a real jungle around Raglan over the peak summer period – and it’s all to do with contractor issues rather than the holidaymaker influx.

He said a new contractor – Downer – had taken over responsibility for mowing the verges only the previous day, but added: “It’s a temporary solution to rectify … correct the problem.”

Clint emphasised he was not happy with Raglan’s appearance and said he had emailed council management with his concerns. “My position is that I am not comfortable with the state of things. It’s most important to keep verges and grass mown.”

He agreed the situation also posed a potential fire risk.

General manager service delivery Tim Harty said on Monday of this week the council was aware of concerns over maintenance of Raglan’s verges.

“The open spaces maintenance works in the area are currently in a period of transition between contractors and we have been assured the outstanding works will be completed within a two-week period,” he said in a supplied statement.

“We have not had any contact from the Fire Service re a fire risk,” his statement added. “As always we remain committed to ensuring we meet the required levels of service in this area, and if members of the public have concerns we urge them to contact us and let us know.”

The Chronicle photographed on Monday an unmarked mower giving what appeared to be a quick once-over to some of the more unkempt areas of town. Then early on Tuesday morning workers were busy weedeating and mowing around the one-way bridge and Marine Parade areas, another sign Raglan is set to return soon to something approaching normality in more ways than one.

A parent’s worst nightmare that should serve as a reminder to motorists on the eve of students returning to school is how a senior Waikato Police officer describes an incident in Raglan that left a boy fighting for his life.

District Road Policing Manager, Inspector Freda Grace, said emergency services were called to a driveway on Raglan’s Stewart St about 9.45am after reports a car leaving a driveway had collided with a boy riding a bike on the footpath.

“Fire, ambulance and police staff arrived to find a six-year-old boy and his bike pinned under the car with the boy having suffered serious injuries.

“A combined team have raised the vehicle and extracted the boy who was flown by helicopter to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition.”

Mrs Grace said the male driver of the car was shaken but unhurt in the crash.

C Marsden hasn’t lived in town elebrated

for several years now but reckons he’s still a Raglan local at heart and that his occasional gigs at Raglan Club are like a “homecoming”.

“I feel I could come back here and retire,” he told the Chronicle on a fleeting visit at New Year during which he firmed up with local music promoter Tom McCormick a late-January concert at the club.

The gig’s of greater significance than usual because this veteran rhythm’n’blues artist’s New Year’s resolution is that 2016 will be his last year touring.

“I want to retire before the ointment wears off,” he laughs, borrowing an old Spike Milligan phrase.

It’s fitting that he’s kick-starting his final year in the music business in Raglan, Midge says, because he had a house here for 34 years and sold it recently only because most of his time’s now spent pursuing another passion – gardening.

“I got the bug,” he admits of his Auckland lifestyle the past five years or so.

Midge – who says he’s now “60 several” – gardens at a retirement village in Green Bay. “I never thought I’d end up loving it as much as I do,” he concedes.

He particularly likes the native bush around the village and reckons he’s a dab hand now at things like how to prune, and when and where to plant flowers and shrubs. “Some of the residents sure know their plants and gardens,” he adds in admiration. “I’ve learnt a lot.”

And Midge still lives close to the water, in Onehunga on the west coast of the

Manukau Harbour. “We’ve got a great new (artificially formed) beach there and it’s only a 10 minute walk for a swim, just like here,” he says.

He sees other parallels with Raglan, too, like the fact it has cafes, a jetty and a wharf where the cement boats used to come in. “It’s really neat.”

Midge has enjoyed a long and illustrious career in the New Zealand music industry.

Highlights include being awarded an OBE a decade ago and being voted New Zealand Entertainer of the Year long before that. He’s also toured the US four times, encouraging artists there to tour and bring their blues music to New Zealand.

He may “feel like a Raglan resident” but Midge is originally from New Plymouth, where when he was “17ish” he joined a band called Bari and the Breakaways (later shortened to the Breakaways) which was New Zealand’s first full-time R&B group.

Later he formed the Country Flyers – one of the more popular country-rock bands of the 70s – then started performing under his own name.

His pre-Raglan life also included a 7-8 year stint in radio in Wellington, marriage and fatherhood. He has two children, one currently in Auckland and the other in London.

After several years performing in Australia during the late '70s, Midge came to Raglan in 1980 at the encouragement of fellow musicians Sid Limbert and Dave Maybee who are still around today. He then bought his 1940s house in Rose Street, just above the building which recently morphed from the Marlin Bar into the Wharf Kitchen & Bar. “It used to be tearooms, and before that a cabaret with dances on every Friday and

Saturday night,” Midge reminisces of the site.

During the '80s Midge and the legendary Raglan Mudsharks played rock’n’roll and blues to a packed bar at the Harbour View Hotel almost every second Monday night – a regular gig which became widely known as Mudshark Mondays.

That special time in Raglan’s musical history was captured on national television in 1987 when broadcaster Gary McCormick visited the town and “put it on the map”, says Midge, with his hour-long documentary ‘Raglan By the Sea’.

Midge reckons he’s loving being back in town for a bit this month, just ahead of doing one more national tour before retirement. “It’s just like I never left,” he adds of the familiar faces and places of old.

He has a loyal fan-base built up over four decades in the business as New Zealand’s best-known bluesman, and feels “totally humbled” by the hundreds of complimentary remarks on Facebook since announcing his final year on the road.

He’s also been playing in a duo for some years with his band’s guitarist, Chet O’Connell. The pair recently added renowned journalist and music enthusiast Phil Gifford to the mix for a show called ‘The Backstage Tapes: A Musical Journey’.

“We’ll be doing more of these intimate theatre shows this year”, says Midge, after two sold-out performances in his hometown last year.

And he’s certainly open to the idea of returning to Raglan for gigs like the Mudshark Rescue Services Fundraiser of recent years which has benefitted locally the Westpac Air Ambulance, the Fire Brigade, Coastguard, the Surf Life Saving Club and St John Ambulance.

“I want to go out on a high note,” he adds of music retirement. “I’m not going to fully quit forever, but there’s other things I want to do including a lot more overseas travel and of course gardening.”

Midge to do ‘celebratory’ gig this anniversary weekend Midge Marsden is promising “a real good repertoire” when he’s back in town with his four-strong band this Auckland Anniversary Weekend for a “celebratory” gig at Raglan Club.

The timing’s perfect, he reckons, with New Year’s festivities over but people still in holiday mode.

He’ll play new material from his latest album ‘Back to the Well’ along with “material from the 60s and through to now” – an eclectic mix of his extensive back catalogue and the R&B for which he’s best known.

It’s a stand-alone show to kick off his final year touring and a “rare treat”, Midge adds, to be back in his old stamping ground. *The Midge Marsden Band plays at Raglan Club on Saturday January 30 from 8pm. Pre-sales $20, door sales $25.

Dirt-jumping hotshot has a couple of new tricks up his sleeve for Farm Jam competition

reestyle mountainbiker Lewis Jones Fgems intends to reveal a couple of new from his “big bag of tricks” when

he competes at Farm Jam in Winton next week.

The 22-year-old from Waitetuna, who often features on the podiums of all the big dirt jams in New Zealand, has taught himself two new tricks, which he hopes to wow judges with at national competitions.

He’s entering Farm Jam, which combines natural-terrain freestyle motocross, BMX and mountainbike dirt jumping, on February 6, and the slopestyle competition – manmade structures, and all downhill, so no pedalling – of the Queenstown Bike Festival, held from March 26 to April 3.

“I always try and learn something new for competitions,” says Lewis, who has been riding since he was 13 years old.

He’s known as “the big bag of tricks” kid, although “I feel like I’m 50 sometimes”, he says of the aches and pains that come with his riding.

The young man with a mop of unruly dark hair and a cheeky grin lives and breathes freestyle mountainbiking, practising every day.

“I only work to ride,” says Lewis,

who works at Plastic Welders in Frankton, Hamilton. “I wake up in the morning, work, ride at lunchtime, work, ride, then repeat.”

Lewis’ latest trick is a Superman backflip, which he says took him about half an hour to learn in a foam pit – a ramp into a pit filled with foam, “so you can learn new tricks without hurting yourself” – when he was in Whistler, Canada, last year.

“But I have had nowhere to practise it so god knows how it is going to turn out in the competition.”

Lewis has gone to Canada three times to train for his competitions in New Zealand.

He says there are not many places in this country where you can go to learn new tricks safely, apart from a mulch pit in Queenstown where he learnt his other new trick: a nohanded backflip.

A no-handed backflip “wins heaps of stuff”, he reckons, “but again I have had nowhere to practise it”.

He practises at his dad’s place in Cogswell Rd, Waitetuna, where has his own dirt jumps set up on the property, or at skate parks in Hamilton.

But because he no longer lives at home, “Dad flattened some of the jumps and made a paddock”.

Lewis, who is currently filming in various New Zealand locations with creative media company The Perfect Line, which promotes mountainbiking, skiing and snowboarding, says a number of international riders compete at Farm Jam. The competition, which is on February 6, returns after a hiatus of a year. In 2014, Lewis came fourth in the mountainbiking division of the competition, and third in 2013.

He admits to nerves, having to ride in front of more than 3000 spectators at some events, “but it soon goes away”.

“They kinda yell at you, ‘yeah, do a flip’, it hypes you up, you get a bit hypo and then try it.

That’s the fun bit of the competition. The scary bit is you have to push yourself a bit harder.

But it’s just about practice and preparation.”

He says his most memorable trick in a competition was in 2011 at the New Zealand Dirt Jump Open at Woodhill Mountain Bike Park, north of Auckland.

“I won the best trick, which was like a superman seat grab over a jump that’s about 10m in distance, and that was pretty scary. It felt like I was in a dream, pretty weird.”

There have been a few casualties along the way.

“I wreck a couple of bike wheels and handle bars … heaps of ankles and elbows, skin off them, been spraining heaps of stuff.

“I’m finding it hard to walk at the mo.”

While riding, he wears an ankle brace, knee pads and helmet. But no gloves, his calloused hands reveal. “They scrunch up.” Gloves are annoying.

And there has only been one bad break: “I broke my leg in 2007, snapped it in half and was in hospital for two months.”

Lewis, who has gear sponsored by Behind the Bars, an online bike shop, and NS Bikes, says he would like to ride professionally and compete overseas but the cost is prohibitive – “if someone would take me on board and help me pay for my flights” – and freestyle mountainbiking isn’t well known in New Zealand. “ N o t many people have really heard about it.

They think it’s all BMXing.”

But he hopes to get enough cash together this year to compete in slopestyle at the Colorado Free Ride Festival in August, which is an event similar to the Queenstown Bike Festival.

“They have a practice from which they will chose people to enter the competition.”

Lewis reckons that unless he does some real damage to his body he’s still got a good number of years left in him, hitting the jumps.

He hopes to keep riding competitively until he is about 35, “maybe 40”.

“I don’t know, until I can’t walk or ride any more, and then I will have to get into downhill wheelchair racing.”

Following in her mum’s footsteps to keep Te Reo alive Neria Mataira, teacher of Te Reo, F orMāori is also a second language.

“I am a second language learner, just like my students,” says Neria, who is offering night and day lessons at Poihakena Marae from February 15.

“My eldest was 4 years old when I learnt, she is 30 now.”

Neria, 56, who has been teaching Te Reo for 20 years, says “attitudes to te reo were very negative” when she was young.

“Our parents were caned if they spoke it,” she says.

But “in the '70s there were a lot of reports that Te Reo Māori would die out by the year 2000, so a lot of academics got serious about looking for ways to rejuvenate, regenerate, our Te Reo.” Neria’s mother, Dame Katerina Mataira, was one of them.

“She did her master’s thesis and researched a lot of methodology, and one that she thought could help Te Reo by Caleb Gattegno, that makes use of silence as a teaching technique.

The method emphasises learner autonomy and active student participation.

Katerina, who died four years ago, developed Te Ataarangi, a programme for adults, and was responsible for the growth of Kura Kaupapa Māori (Māori immersion schools) in New Zealand.

Katerina was appointed as a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2011 for service to the Māori language.

There is a certain irony in that honour.

“Her parents sent her away to school to learn English because that was how she was she was going to do well for herself.”

Neria says it is important to keep Māori

culture and language alive.

She has a moko kauae, a woman’s chin tattoo, which she got five years ago, at the same time as her two sisters and following in their mother’s footsteps.

“It’s something that I think is very beautiful: traditional Māori moko,” she says.

She says she discussed it with her partner, Winiata Whare, who also has a facial moko, about getting it done.

“Winiata said ‘why do we teach Te Reo? So that it’s not lost to our grandchildren, and the same must apply to these traditional markings’.”

All of Neria’s children attended Māori immersion schools, and Te Reo is spoken in the home where she lives with her extended family.

“One of our youngest said ‘right, I don’t want to go to that school any more, I want to go to a Pakeha school’, and he went and hasn’t spoken Māori since.

“That’s really sad for his mum but he should be able to make his own decisions.”

Again there lies an irony in Neria’s anguish: “He can understand Māori, and it’s still there, it’s just sleeping.”

As with learning any new language, there has to be a desire or willingness to learn, and then an opportunity to continue conversing in order to retain what’s been learnt and to excel.

Neria says her night courses (Monday nights, two hours) offer the fundamental basics of learning Te Reo, while students who take her day courses (twice a week, from 9.30am to 2.30pm, Mondays and Tuesdays) should be able to converse fluently in Maori by the end of the year.

But you have to spend more than one night school lesson a week to become fluent, she says.

“You have to spend time totally immersed.

“Come back and the fluency will be able to flourish.”

“There is a power in language and you have to get over your own ego (in order to learn). It can be very challenging for a lot of people and a lot of the time it doesn’t work, people are uncomfortable with it. A lot of adults are scared to make mistakes.”

Neria says sadly more non-Māori than Māori take her courses.

“Some Māori have had bad experiences with school, so they are scared to put

themselves in that position again."

She would like to see more Māori involved, but understands there can be barriers.

Leading up to the start of her classes there’s been a lot of interest, says Neria.

“That’s exciting, but we will see how many will turn up on the day, and how many are still on board at the end of the year.”

So far, she has 20 beginners keen for the night school this year. She had eight starting last year but ended with six.
