Dear Editor How not to advertise by phone Living in modern society has many advantages in terms of comfort and enough money to live comfortably for most people. However as our society is a capitalist society we gradually lose sight of the human touch.

One is advertising by phoning home numbers to sell services or products. This method has been around for years but there is a new approach that makes me furious. Instead of a polite “How are you today?” before

launching into the sales pitch, after dashing to answer the phone in case it’s your nearest and dearest, you immediately hear this voice urging you in a forceful manner to buy this or join that. I expect that this method was thought up by some bright young man (women are more subtle pursuants) hoping to achieve rapid promotion. I slammed the phone down immediately.

New pump track among changes at Te Kopua aglan’s Te Kopua BMX track R is to be replaced with an $80,000 pump track, to be built

by Empire of Dirt next year.

Raglan Kopua Holiday Park Board chairman Colin Chung said the old dirt BMX track, which was built in 2012, needed a lot of repair work every year – the new pump track, which is being funded by the board, would be made of raised asphalt and designed for riders of all abilities.

A pump track is a series of rollers, berms and jumps that allow riders to continuously pump the terrain to maintain speed without pedalling.

The pump track would take up less space then the BMX track, and be sited adjacent to the skate park.

“It’s an excellent year round facility to complement the skate park.”

World-class track builders Empire of Dirt also constructed the Kakariki Mountainbike Trail in the pine forest in Wainui Reserve, which was officially opened on December 3.

In other changes at Te Kopua Reserve, the fitness parcourse has been closed because it did not meet new health and safety standards.

Mr Chung said the board would look at installing an alternative fitness course after seeking input from user groups.

The Raglan Kopua Holiday Park also has new managers.

Rob and Mary Clark resigned earlier this month after running the campground for 14 years.

Previous assistant manager Jo Hamblyn will be the acting manager for the summer, with Haven Tahere stepping up to the support role.

Mr Chung said the Clarks “helped build and guide the growth of the campground”.

He said the campground would be in good hands for summer.

“I think Jo and Haven will do a good job. They have the experience, ability and personality to run the park well over the summer.”

Arctic Christmas Day set to go to the dogs

D

og sledding in the snow may be poles apart from the traditionally laidback Kiwi way of celebrating Christmas but it’s exactly how Raglan’s Cameron Sandwell expects to be spending his time this Sunday.

The 28-year-old is currently living in northern Norway, where the temperatures plummet to below -25C, and about the time yuletide festivities in New Zealand are winding down he’ll be hard at work guiding husky-drawn sled tours across the Arctic Circle tundra in a Christmas card world of icicles and snow.

Not that he’ll miss out altogether on something akin to the Christmas he might normally spend with his family in Upper Wainui Rd. Norwegians traditionally celebrate Christmas on the 24th, so Cameron and his Kiwi girlfriend, Stella Avery, will share lunch, dinner and presents then with the family who own the resort where they both now live and work.

Birk Husky is a small adventure company in the borderland between Norway, Finland and Russia. Cameron says the eerily stark Russian border is visible, but off limits, just 300 metres across a river.

The pair – who are on their OE – arrived there at the beginning of August after deciding to commit full-on to dog sled guiding. “This is our most permanent home in two-and-ahalf years,” says the keen surfer and one-time marketing assistant.

“We originally applied to volunteer here for a month or two but there were no more volunteering positions available, so Trine – the owner – offered us guiding positions.

“This meant a commitment of nine months without surf,” he laughs. “It was a big decision for us.”

The couple previously worked as lifeguards at Surf Snowdonia in Wales, but then hit the road late last year in a small Postman Pat-like van with a bed in the back.

MORTGAGE BROKERS Murtaghs Cameron Sandwell will be dog sledding this Christmas in Norway.

Their last surf was in Portugal back in July.

But Stella loves dogs, Cameron explains, and had wanted to do something like this for a long time. Now they work daily with a pack of 40 Alaskan huskies, including three puppies, which are bred specifically for speed and endurance as sled dogs.

They guide groups of up to eight people by running a sled in front of the tourists.

Following behind will be, for instance, a one-person sled pulled by four huskies or a two-person sled pulled by six or perhaps a combination of different-sized sleds depending on the tour group.

“We are standing up steering,” Cameron says. “The dogs do most of the work.”

He says the snow-covered trails lined with birches – or birk trees as they’re called in Norway – are “beautiful” and there’s the choice of day, evening or overnight tours.

The evening tours take in the northern lights (Aurora Borealis), and overnight tourists get to stay in wilderness huts to sleep under them.

Otherwise the couple lives in a small, basic hut near the owners’ own home. There are two other self-contained cabins on site, they say, and a restaurant in a Viking long house where they help prepare traditional food for guests.

Cameron reckons he’s taken his new “wilderness man” role to heart. Pictures of him on Facebook show a young man with long hair, a big beard and moustache with icicles clinging to it.

There are some downsides to their latest lifestyle. “It is polar night here at the moment so we don’t see the sun,” he says. “We have some light from 10-1 but have found [the lengthy dark] very hard to get used to.”

But the pair has no regrets over their extended stay at Birk Husky. They’ve seen the change in the Arctic from summer to winter, experienced the dog sled guiding business from start to finish – and are about to enjoy their first-ever white Christmas in a far-flung part of the northern hemisphere.

Trust to serve up free lunch for Christmas

Santa spread some cheer at the annual Raglan Volunteer Fire Brigade's Kids' Christmas Party.

Raglan Hospital and Rest Home manager Cherry McFarlane says oldies are often forgotten at Christmastime, and while staff tries to make Christmas special for its residents, the free community lunch will bring a welcome flurry of activity.

“There will be lots of people coming and going so it will be great.”

The privately run Raglan Hospital and Rest Home, which was once owned by the Raglan Community Charitable Trust, will

open its doors to anyone who might want some company on Christmas Day, residents and tourists, from midday to 2.30pm.

The decorations are up in the corridors and one of the residents has knitted a nativity set that has pride of place in the reception area.

Trust chairman Peter Storey, who helped out with the free Christmas dinners that used to be held in the town hall, says the lunch was a great opportunity to showcase the hospital and rest home that has recently had a $1.5 million extension.

With views across the Raglan Harbour, “it is a really, really nice facility.

Christmas lunch will include ham, turkey and lamb.

“It’s a typical Kiwi Christmas lunch: mint potatoes, salads, buffet style,” says Peter.

There will also be live music by Raglan musician Dave Maybee.

ainter-cum-designer Rick Youmans reckons relocating his workplace to Raglan has put his life back on track.

His business, Youmans Capsule, based in an industrial Te Rapa warehouse, in Hamilton, wasn’t getting any through traffic so in a bold move a few months back Rick moved it – along with an impressive selection of his mostly marine-themed art – into the last vacant shop space at Raglan Wharf.

The move “saved my life”, Rick told the Chronicle, after a difficult year in which he experienced the lows of both a marriage break-up and depression.

The keen yachtsman says that being right on the water, with his eight-metre catamaran often moored just beyond the shop frontage, is proving an “inspiring” environment to work in. He likes too that “I have everything around me that I have done, and people in (the shop) all the time”.

He’s had really good feedback since setting up at the wharf, he adds, and is already generating sales.

The good vibe Rick feels at the wharf is reflected in the name he’s chosen for his new showroom-cum-workroom. It’ll go by the unusual name of ‘Inspiration Executed’ just as soon as he gets round to completing the signage.

That’s more of a statement than a phrase, he explains; a simple acknowledgement of creativity and making it happen.

Large oils and watercolours which “in any way, shape or form are about water” create a dramatic backdrop to the stylish, upmarket presentation

cases or modules that Rick designs for professionals like architects and engineers who might otherwise have documents spilling out of folders.

The aluminium capsules – technically challenging to manufacture – are made only in Hamilton but have been sold throughout Australasia and Europe to a niche market for three years now.

Despite having travelled the world looking for manufacturers, Rick found his unique design could only become a reality through working alongside some innovative Hamilton and New Zealand companies.

That’s essentially what brought him back to the country recently after 12 years away as a Sydney-based designer.

Hamilton didn’t hold much appeal as a place to live, however, so Rick shifted four years ago to a house perched high on Greenslade Rd. The property has breathtaking views of the harbour and its own steps down to a bay where he also moors his catamaran quite frequently so it gets to “dry out” at low tide.

Rick says he’s glad to be back on New Zealand’s west coast, having grown up and developed his love of sailing at Plimmerton, north of Wellington.

From there he went on to Wellington Polytechnic – now a campus of Massey University – where he completed a diploma in graphic design.

With a good representation of his life’s work now more or less in the one place, Rick’s feeling motivated to develop Youmans Capsule further.

The company’s been something of a “sleeping tiger” for a while, he says, and he’s keen to consider customised business support through the likes of the

We’ve already had a few meetings to discuss the scope of the group and it’s responsibilities. In 2017 we will begin consulting with groups and individuals to determine how our community would like Raglan/Whaingaroa to look, sound and feel in the future and to guide a full Steering Group to take up the reins.

In the tradition of the original Raglan Naturally Plan; to present a document that truly represents our community, it’s important that we take into consideration all aspects of Raglan/Whaingaroa Community. This will include health, education, culture, environment, tourism, retail, families, economy, infrastructure, environment etc.

Initially we want to address such questions as; How is the community best represented?

How is the community best consulted? How do we get specialised community members involved in specialised topics? We’ll also be looking for committed people keen to make a difference to join the Steering Group, and well as future project teams.

The Steering Group will drive the project, and be responsible for its implementation and ensuring it remains a ‘living’ document once it is complete. Once finished, Raglan Naturally 2017 Plan will feed into the Waikato District Council’s Long Term Plan and Annual Plan via The Raglan Community Board. It is important to the Interim Steering Group that you have your say on what’s important to you, so please look out for opportunities to do this constructively in 2017. We hope to have the plan completed by Spring 2017.

Meantime, Rick continues to indulge his lifelong passion for painting – which he sells throughout New Zealand, Australia and Singapore – and is ready to tackle new projects now he’s happily ensconced at the wharf.

He’s inspired by English landscape artist William Turner’s way with painting the light, and

by British maritime painter Montague Dawson’s “stunning seascapes”, all of which has led Rick to explore the “drama” of the sea in his own work.

How did you become interested in Photography: I guess I became interested symbiotically because Dad is a photographer and takes my siblings and I on all his wild photo expeditions.

Tell us about taking the winning shot: I was wanting to take a pic for the photo comp, so we went down to the beach. It was a really beautiful evening with a gorgeous

sunset. I took lots of photos but the one that won was definitely my fav!

What do you generally like to take photos of: Surf culture, wildlife and any other thing that looks neat.

What other stuff do you like doing: Surfing, skating, snowboarding, mountainbiking and art.

Inspiring children lead the way in Plastic Bag Free Raglan effort knew we had to meet him. Django’s family was gifted a PBFR bag, but he wanted to purchase one of his own to carry his school books in and to also support the makers of the bags.

“We have to care for the earth,” he stated simply. "Even just one more reusable bag will make a difference.".

Django and his sister Maayan (4) live in Te Akau and when they take the boat across the harbour to come into town, sometimes they come across rubbish floating in the water. The two have spent time doing beach cleans with school and learning other environmental tips and tricks while working in the garden along side Liz Stanway and Rick Thorpe.

In talking to the two youngsters, you realise that doing things such as going plastic bag free isn’t just about gaining a few environmental points.

aglan’s little village has been officially discovered.

Streets are packed with people and it’s amazing to realise that every visitor is actually coming over wanting the same thing: to have a good time!

No pricy passing lanes for impatient SH23 commuters he speed limit coming into Raglan Texpect may be reduced to 80kmh but don’t any passing lanes or longer slow

vehicle bays to be part of plans to make State Highway 23 safer – they are too expensive to build and wont save a lot of travel time anyway.

Safe Roads has released an update on its plans to make the stretch of rural road between Hamilton and Raglan safer for commuters after seeking feedback from the community in August.

The update acknowledged that many commuters expressed a desire for more passing opportunities but they would not be considered as part of the project.

“Passing lanes and longer slow vehicle bays are expensive to build and won’t save a

lot of travel time on this highway. Evidence on other similar highways does not show major safety gains from passing lanes, although we acknowledge they can alleviate some frustration.”

The update says the option of having formalised pullover areas were being explored, and if feasible these areas would be signposted in advance to encourage slower vehicles to use them.

The Safe Roads team also received a range of responses to speed management on SH23, with many in opposition of a reduction in the 100kmh speed limit.

“There was support for an 80kmh speed limit past Greenslade Rd, on the approach into Raglan. Our analysis supports this and,

subject to formal consultation, this will be implemented.”

The current focus on SH23 is on the stretch of road between Waitetuna and Raglan, with construction aimed to start this summer.

Work includes: shoulder widening at highrisk locations; improved signage and centreline rumble strips; side safety barriers and rails in high-risk areas to stop vehicles running off the road and protect motorcyclists if they crash; and minor intersection improvements.

Safety for cyclists will be improved by providing a 1.5m sealed shoulder in front of new side safety barriers, and widening the shoulder to 1m in some other locations, particularly on corners.

Proposals to improve safety at intersections between Cogswell Rd and Raglan include:

resurfacing the curve of the intersection of Waitetuna Valley Rd with high friction asphalt surfacing; putting in a wide flush median in Te Uku to make it safer for traffic to turn right into Okete Rd; and trimming back roadside banks to increase visibility to the east at Te Mata Rd. At the Greenslade Rd intersection, a lower speed limit, improved signs and road markings will help improve safety until the intersection is moved 200m closer to Raglan as part of Lorenzen Bay development.

Similar work on SH23 between Hamilton and Highbrook is likely to begin at the end of next year, while safety options are still being considered for the stretch of road between Highbrook and Waitetuna.

Council to start fining freedom campers in breach of bylaw Waikato District Council will hand out $200 fines to freedom campers who breach the new bylaw over the summer holiday period.

The council has hired a contractor to carry out freedom camping patrols. It’s a part-time, fixed position that started on December 1 and will end on March 1, at which time the contract will be reviewed.

The Freedom Camping Bylaw 2016 came into force in October and prohibits freedom camping in a number of areas in Raglan, including the CBD, Cliff St, the wharf and Wainui Reserve car park.

WDC general manager customer support Sue Duignan said random and scheduled patrols would focus on the prohibited areas and the contractor would also respond to any complaints received.

She said no fines had been handed out at this stage as the contractor had been focusing on educating the public about the new freedom camping rules for the district.

She said freedom campers who had been found breaching the bylaw had been cooperative and moved on.

“We have been handing out fliers to campers and we have also placed these fliers at the local i-Site. As well as this, we have been in contact with various camping associations to inform them of the bylaw.

“We will start issuing infringements in the Christmas, New Year period.”

Ms Duignan said the council had received four complaints regarding freedom camping since the new bylaw was put in place.

New signs pointing out freedom camping restrictions have been made and will be put up at key sites around Raglan before Christmas.

“These signs have been created to clearly show the prohibited areas. However, if you don’t see a sign, don’t assume that you can freedom camp in that spot. We are asking people to check out the information on our website, including the bylaw and other camping options in the district.”

Occasionally the same doctor may want to follow up with you more closely for a particular problem that you are trying to manage, and if so they will probably tell you: if you are in any doubt, please ask.

All doctors and nurses have access to your whole electronic records, including your results, when they see you and so there should be no concern that they will not know enough about your previous history.

Sometimes if a doctor leaves they will directly “pass you on” to your next key doctor and you will have the opportunity to be involved in that decision.

I’ve been working at West Coast Health Clinic since moving with my family to Raglan in 2007. I love the variety of work that general practice offers and specialise in skin assessments, minor surgery, travel medicine and sports medicine. Since March this year I have been on sabbatical in Grand Manan, New Brunswick, Canada. As a family, we have enjoyed our overseas adventure but we’re all just a little homesick! See you all in March 2017.

I moved to Raglan with my wife, Chris, and our three children in March last year to cover Dr Mike’s sabbatical. I’m originally from West Jordan, Utah, USA, where I’ve worked as a GP physician for the last 17 years. My family and I have loved living in the Raglan community, it’s a wonderful little town and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you all for making us so welcome.

I’m a Dutch/Nepalese GP who moved to New Zealand in 2014 with my wife and lived in Cambridge for two years before joining the West Coast Health Team in June 2016. We intend to make Raglan our permanent home; I love outdoor activities and travelling, and hope to go surfing soon.

In addition to providing GP services at the clinic, I also manage the Raglan Area School clinic every Monday and Thursday during term time.

I am a GP who has worked in the allergy arena for years at Medlab and in Australia, and have a special interest in food-related allergies. I joined the West Coast Health Team in 2015 and work every Tuesday and Wednesday. As a resident of Otonga Valley I’m enjoying working closer to home and within the Raglan community.

Hamish: I was born in the Waikato and then spent too many years in Auckland. I’ve been working in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty since 2009. I started working as a GP in 2013, including six months at West Coast Health Clinic. My areas of interest are child health and skin cancer medicine. In my spare time I kitesurf, enjoy photography and DIY around the house.

Madeleine: I spent my early childhood years both in Auckland and in a small coastal town called Orere point in the Firth of Thames.

I’m in my second year of GP training; I spent the first six months of this year at West Coast Health Clinic. Both Hamish and I have done a post-graduate diploma in paediatrics, and children’s health is also an area in medicine that I really enjoy. I spend most of my time outside of work with our two-year-old daughter. I like to garden and play tennis.

Kia Ora. Having worked here in Raglan last summer I’m hoping to help cover some of the busy season this Christmas and New Year. I'm also learning how to be a mother for the first time and trying to get more done in the garden. My undergraduate training was in the UK but New Zealand has been home since 2008. My post-graduate training has focused mostly on rural and women’s health so Raglan is a great place for me to be.

I’ve been working as a doctor for nine years, predominantly in Gisborne, Tairawhiti, and have also worked in youth health. I’m passionate about healthy communities, te reo Maori, te taiao, art, health education and child and youth health.

Originally from Malaysia, I have lived in New Zealand since 2009. I graduated from the University of Auckland and worked at Waikato Hospital the last four years. I will be working as a GP registrar in Raglan for the next six months.

I am the nurse manager at the clinic. I work fulltime and love my job; I love being involved in the community and I love working with the people of Raglan, some of whom I have known for a long time. I grew up in Hamilton and my family came to Raglan 25 years ago. I’m married to Stephen and our younger children were born here and are very comfortable in the community. Our children are now all grown up but keep coming back to their hometown, some permanently and others for weekend visits.

I joined the team as a practice nurse last December and work every Monday and Tuesday. I’ve 14 years’ experience in nursing and I really enjoy working in the Raglan community where I live with my husband and three young kids.

I have been working at WCHC for over three years and have a special interest in diabetes. I have lived in Raglan for over 10 years, and came from working in ICU. My family and I enjoy being a part of the Raglan community.

Hi I’m Katie. I have been a registered nurse for over 13 years and recently joining West Coast Health Clinic, coming from the operating theatres at Waikato Hospital. My family has lived in the Raglan area for over 20 years and I’m really excited to be now working locally in our amazing community and with the awesome team at WCHC.

My nursing career started in 1987 at Leicester General Hospital in the UK and I have lived in Raglan since 1997. Whilst working in Waikato Hospital A&E it became apparent that a great many admissions to hospital could be prevented with good health education in the primary care setting so I began working as a practice nurse.

I take great pleasure in promoting healthcare within the Raglan community.

I started working as a receptionist at the clinic in 2013 and have recently change positions to medical centre assistant. At the weekend I quite often volunteer as a St John ambulance officer and I also run a boutique cattery based on SH23. This lifestyle suits me purrfectly!

I’ve worked at the clinic for four years as the practice manager. Originally from Ireland, I’ve been living in this beautiful little town for the last 10 years with my Kiwi husband and two young kids. My main role here is to ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the clinic whilst also managing all the financial aspects of the business. I feel very lucky to be part of this dynamic team and to be able to contribute to the community through this role.

The summer boom puts us under huge pressure to handle the extra volumes and we need your help!

Make this year Zero Waste Christmas At Kaahu’s Nest at the Te Hutewai Resource Recovery Park has infinite opportunities for making your Christmas waste free this year. We have everything you need to upcycle or create fantastic homemade Christmas gifts.

The Wood Yard has beautiful Upcycled furniture and timber for creative projects-make a planter or outdoor furniture.

For gardeners we have locally made bagged carbon and super food compost. You can use it to pot up a native tree, fruit tree or herb – the gift that keeps on giving, also saving money.

Rubbish left on our beaches, parks and walkways is ugly and a hazard to wildlife. If we all do our part and pick up after ourselves – and often others, we can keep these areas beautiful and safe. Please take your rubbish to the nearest bin or take it home.

You can recycle glass, plastic and aluminum cans downtown and in public areas in the Recycling bins provided. Please recycle rather than putting these recycleable items in the rubbish bins – our town diverts over 178,833 kg’s of recycling from landfill each year but we need your help to do this!

If you are buying presents buy local! Support our community and its businesses. Think about the packaging your gifts come in, take your own bag to collect gifts. Avoid poorly manufactured gifts that will deteriorate quickly and end up in landfill. Try purchasing items that can have numerous uses, can be upcycled, repurposed or composted.

Raglan's Reusable Shopping Bag Thanks to the wonderful work by the Plastic Bag Free Raglan (PBFR) team and volunteers, Whāingaroa households have recently received a koha reusable jute shopping bag and we are starting to see them being used around town.

These bags will be a great help in moving our community to a ‘single-use plastic shopping bag free town’. Remember to take yours with you each time you shop!

Every week in the summer, Raglan businesses supply over 20,000 single-use plastic shopping bags to customers. Single-use plastic bags are considered valueless when it comes to recycling, and less than half of these bags end up in landfill. An alarming number ‘escape’ into the environment. Plastic is not going to go away anytime soon.
