Dear Editor Matt’s Monologue

Ian McKissak’s letters regarding new Lorenzen Bay waterside improvements are deserving of a response.

His earlier comments were partially directed at council bureaucrats but of course the responsibility rests squarely with locally elected representatives.

As a community board member I took a look at the issue two years ago, taking with me another community board member as backup, and we had discussions with the then adjacent land owner to gain his knowledge on history, current status and views on resolution.

When I took the issue to the community board meeting I suggested we should look at all foreshore maintenance issues of counciladministered land between Greenslade Rd and Opotoru Estuary.

I mentioned hundreds of thousands of dollars had been invested in consolidating the base of the cliff on Cliff St, that wave energy had caused a lot of the rocks to migrate from the Cliff base out on to the beach.

As a first step I suggested we could ask a group such as the Rugby Club if they may like to move the rocks back to the

base of the cliff for a financial contribution to the Rugby Club.

The then chairperson ruled it would require a resource consent and closed discussion of the topic.

Not one community board member raised a point of order suggesting maintenance of these assets could be a worthwhile agenda item.

When travelling east across Opotoru bridge one can see a rock-and-roll gaggle of rocks that were once supporting Wainui Rd now out on the mudflats.

The Cliff St foreshore has had a recent slip. The road next to the boardwalk at the wharf has collapsed. The western base of the wharf reclamation has lost substantial rock support and those rocks are now sitting out on the mudflat for all to see.

I did attempt to progress the issue a second time by suggesting to the community board that we have a section of our meetings where we can nominate future agenda items and have, say, a 6-month draft of upcoming agenda items.

That has not been implemented.

Every day is a new beginning and we have a new community board. A stitch in time saves nine.

Dear Editor We wish to express our public thanks to the awesome students from Raglan Area School who came to the Community House last Friday to help us with White Ribbon Day. And a big “ups” too to all the students who decorated the white ribbons and the banners, helping to promote the message of non-violence

and respectful relationships.

It was sad that the rain meant the banners could not be put up but they will be next year!

The students were excellent ambassadors for the school and we were hugely grateful for their support.

We also thank our community for their generous support.

he Kākāriki Trail’s fancy ribbon was cut on Saturday morning, officially opening the Raglan bike track for business.

Tainui representative Angeline Greensill cut the ribbon made of tied-together inner bike tubes with a pair of garden loppers following the karakia at the top of the steep hill at the end of Ririra Kereopa Memorial Drive, which marks the entrance of the bike trail in the pine trees.

About 60 people attended the ceremony, including a couple of keen riders from Hamilton who “have been waiting years for this”.

Kaumatua Paddy Kaa blessed the site, “so hopefully no one is going to get hurt“ – it was a bit too late for one sponsor who, helping to break the track in the weekend before, ended up in hospital with a bust collarbone and ribs. A “Caution ride you to your ability” sign has since been erected, marking the steep downhill section with many jumps.

“Hopefully everyone will come along and really enjoy it,” Paddy said of the trail.

“I didn’t enjoy that walk up the hill …

“I cant wait till the day when we come back to open the gondola.”

Kaumātua Sean Ellison said the name of the track, Te Ara Kākāriki, deserved a special mention.

Kākāriki means green and is the name of the area down on the beach where the steep track to the trail begins.

“We thought that was an appropriate thing, everyone has to start there to get to the bike trail.

“It’s linked into the history of the place, the land … even though the trees are now pine and macrocarpa – they have a Pākehā face to them.”

Sean said the bike trail wound around “significant pa sites of our people”, and there were “many options we could have taken for a name for this place”.

“It took some time to find a suitable name.

It had to have a real significance and tie to this land.”

Raglan Mountainbike Club president Merren Tait said the journey to getting the trails built had been a long but rewarding one.

“I am sure that those who will ride the tracks for the first time today will agree that they are a real asset,” she said on Saturday.

Merren acknowledged the support by Tainui hapū of Whaingaroa and the Waikato

District Council, especially former Raglan Ward councillor Clint Baddeley, in getting the track built.

And “we wouldn’t be here today without the passion and drive of two individuals: Charlie (Young) and Dirk (de Ruysscher)”.

Merren said the track builders, Empire of Dirt, were a world-class track-building business “and it is great to see them work with the little guys as well”.

It was a hot, sunny day, but nice and cool under the pines, with a sea breeze coming through to keep riders cool.

The riders lined up to test the tracks, including children as young as 5.

Sienna Hansen, 13, said she would definitely be back.

“It was really good. I liked the Rope A Dope track, there are lots of curving corners.”

Raglan resident Erin Rodgers said it was really nice to see all the kids attend the opening, and to have a “whole new playground for people” in Raglan.

There are about 4 kilometres of trails within the cross-country track system at the council-owned Wainui Reserve.

Dirk, who owns Cyclery Raglan in Bankart St, said the track was a good workout and there had been good feedback from users of all levels – skilled and occasional riders.

“I am sure it will be well used.

“It was quite busy on Sunday, with families coming and going – there was a nice flow of people.”

Dirk and Raglan Ward councillor Lisa Thomson are opening a pop-up cycle hire space next to Rocket-it Kitchen, which should be up and running by next week.

Two-hour rentals will cost $39, including a free coffee from Rock-It. The Raglan Mountainbike Club is also holding time trial competitions for members on the second Thursday of every month, beginning tonight at 6.30pm at the boardwalk on the track.

Dirk, who is sponsoring monthly prizes given to the fastest man and woman, said each competitor would get two goes around the track for the fastest time.

At the end of the year a trophy will be given to the overall winner.

The entry fee of $2 will go towards the costs of track maintenance.

Council to take middle road as zero sewage spills ‘unaffordable’

W

aikato District Council has decided to adopt an approach that will see a medium target regarding the amount of wastewater spills, according to national benchmarking, despite aspirations for “zero spills”.

WDC general manager strategy and support Tony Whittaker told the Raglan Community Board on Tuesday that zero spills was “not affordable”, with a price tag of $134 million attached to a high level of intervention for a target of 0.25 overflows per 1000 connections.

On Monday, WDC approved the immediate spending of $1.757m to address urgent concerns around wastewater spills, the start of a long-term multi-million dollar programme to address the district’s network.

An independent report on the district’s wastewater network by Jacobs New Zealand was presented at the council meeting, and made a number of recommendations for a continual improvement plan.

The summary of options for intervention, over a 10-year period, included doing the staus quo (4.3 overflows per 1000 connections) at a cost of $30.8m, aiming for a medium performing network system (one overflow per

1000 connections) at a cost of $74m, or a high performance intervention at a cost of $134m (0.25 spills per 1000 connections). However, more analysis is needed before costs can be pinned down.

Mr Whittaker said the council would work toward the medium approach, although there “certainly is a desire and aspiration to have zero spills”.

Waikato District Council currently is the poorest performing provincial district council in the country, regarding overflows, according to National Performance Review data (2014/2015)

by Water New Zealand. A continual improvement programme approach should bump the council up the ranks as one of the better performers, the Jacobs report says.

In July, the council received a formal warning from the Waikato Regional Council following three wastewater spills in four months into the Raglan harbour. A $300,000 programme, including the installation of back-ups at all 18 Raglan pump stations, outage alarms, a back-up generator and funding for a community education programme, is already underway or complete.

The council will also adopt other recommendations in the Jacobs report, including having separate specialist wastewater and water teams, the purchase of standby generators and $1.6m for specialist equipment for Raglan.

Work will be done to improve communications relating to the SCADA control system to ensure a robust connection exists between Raglan and council main office in Ngaruawahia.

Immediate work to improve the network will see an increase of $68 per property in the district connected to the wastewater network in the targeted rate, effective from 2017-2018.

Mr Whittaker said the rate rise would enable the council to accelerate the “asset condition assessment that is required … so we can make decisions” regarding a long-term programme.

The report recommended that council spend $3.6 million for specialist high-pressure jets and closed circuit television (CCTV) investigations across the total district.

WDC chief executive Gavin Ion said neither the community nor the council would tolerate ongoing spills and that a significant investment into the district’s wastewater network was “simply non-negotiable”.

He expected more comprehensive analysis, including greater certainty around costs, would not be available until the second half of 2017.

Council must consult with the community before undertaking any further spending, he said.

Any major decisions regarding the district’s wastewater newtwork will become part of the 2018-28 Long Term Plan.

Cornerstone Roots EP a special dedication with launch supported by Mad Professor

A Roots will be hitting up your local YOT Club favourite, Cornerstone

this Saturday to drop their brand new 5-track EP Summer Haze and they’ll be joined by special guest the Mad Professor.

Summer Haze is a collection of five songs, and is described as “a special collection of tracks for our friends and family”. The EP is a dedication to Raa Smith, and a pre-curser to a fourth studio album.

“Take Me was written while living on Cliff St when times were not easy,” says vocalist Brian Ruawai.

In the song, Tane Rore is the personification of shimmering haze as he performs a haka for his mother.

“Another song, Inna Web, features Reiki on the Oneness riddim produced by Moritz von Korff from French band Dub Inc. “The song is a call to push through life’s disappointments and seize the day because you won the ultimate race to be here.”

The track Places To Be was written while the band was in Budapest during their 2014 European tour.

“We wanted to really get across an international vibe not inspired by our laid back environment here in Raglan,” explains Brian.

“Its an 8-minute album track which features Jonathan Crayford on a Wurlitzer.

“He was in New York at the time and we sent him the files to record over. Matt Bizzle features on saxophone, and the final mix of the EP was completed at Neil Finn’s Roundhead Studios in Auckland.”

Since their inception in 2001 at the iconic Raglan Musician’s Club sessions, Cornerstone Roots have evolved from the original three-piece outfit into a familyoriented band. Daughter Kaea is now on keyboard, samples and vocals, and son Reiki is on backing vocals.

A stalwart in the New Zealand reggae scene, they’ve supported some heavyweight acts including the likes of Burning Spear; Toots & the Maytals; Sly and Robbie

and Massive Attack. More locally, he has remixed tracks by Katchafire and Salmonella Dub. Expect a great night of roots, dub and reggae with some local and international legends. Cornerstone Roots will have copies of their new EP for sale and will be supported by their good friend, the Mad Professor. If you don’t make it on Saturday, Mad Professor will also be making an appearance at Sunday Sessions the next day, from 4.20pm in the YOT Club yard.

T

he Kura Reo ki Poihakena held an open day on Monday to show the community what they have learned this past year. The students have been attending Te Ataarangi, a Māori immersion programme led by kaiaka Neria Mataira, at the marae.

Visitors were welcomed on to the marae with the traditional pōwhiri, karanga and

waiata led by the students, which was followed by morning tea and the sharing of their experiences in the class.

As the students recalled their first days, they introduced themselves in te reo Māori and almost seemed to struggle to communicate their feelings in English.

But it was clear they held much aroha and respect for te reo, for Neria and each other.

They led the visitors through a short session of the rakau, the rods, which is the

learning system for Te Ataarangi developed

by Dame Katarina Mataira, Neria’s mother.

Within five minutes both the students and visitors were signing a short waiata together.

The journey of learning te reo Māori is an all encompassing, personal journey. It’s an emotional language that flows through the words and wairua of the person speaking.

Although there are so many opportunities to learn, Te Ataarangi connects you in a very personal way.

Because Te Ataarangi is held at the marae, no English is spoken during class.

All questions and small talk among one another is done in te reo Māori. The students said lunches were really quiet at first, but now they talk among each other with ease.

This year’s programme included both new speakers and some second year speakers, all of who developed immensely through the programme.

Neria offers a 10-hour a week immersion course that runs on Mondays and Tuesdays, or an evening course on Mondays for two hours for those that work during the day.

Kura Reo ki Poihakena follows the Raglan Area School’s schedule so those with tamariki have the opportunity to attend.

All-terrain Nanny Goats gear up for epic 100km challenge

I morning in Raglan that makes t’s the kind of beautiful sunny

you feel blessed to live here, to be alive.

Three of the four Positive Nanny Goats are clambering up and up, over tree roots and around fallen trees, incorporating the Karioi loop track as part of their training ground for an epic 100km walk to raise money for those who are not as lucky as them.

The fourth nanny goat is in Fiji but, in between panting and catching of breath, the others – Jasmin Radford, Emma Galloway and Kelly Woolston – are “positive” that she will be training hard out, too. After all, Keri Oetzel, who could probably run the 100km no sweat, they reckon, roped them all into the Oxfam Trailwalker team challenge in the first place.

A trained psychologist, Keri’s the one who is mad enough to want to do Trailwalker twice. For the others, it is a once in a lifetime experience.

The Positive Nanny Goats are all mums from Raglan; their name comes courtesy of Jasmin’s partner, Aaron Kereopa, who called them all “nanny goats” in jest, as he’s wont to do.

But it was a pretty solid name, they decided, because goats climb mountains and traverse any terrain, and nanny goats are good mothers – so it stuck.

For the past two months, the good mothers have got together every Friday morning, after the kids have been bundled off to school, to stomp around our countryside, bush and beaches.

“I think this is our hardest walk yet,” pants Emma. She’s not feeling 100 per cent after a hot, sunny day spent at a school athletics meet, without any water.

“I might need to have a big steak before the race,” jokes the food blogger who has been a vegetarian all her life and has never tasted meat.

Kelly has charged on ahead and admits a hard part of the walk might be sticking together as a team. She likes going up hills, fast – but she’s rubbish at the downhill, she reckons, as everyone catches up.

The Oxfam Trailwalker is in Whakatane, March 25-26. It’s an all terrain hike, including along Ohope

Beach.

Teams of four are given 36 hours to complete the challenge, and must walk and finish together.

Every team is asked to raise at least $2500 towards Oxfam's work in reducing poverty and demanding justice for the world's poorest communities.

The work by Oxfam is close to the Nanny Goat’s hearts, and they reckon they’re super-excited to be supporting the charity, if not with a little trepidation.

Keri, who later corresponds by email, says she completed the challenge in 2014 and it was one of the best experiences of her life – although her feet were wrecked for weeks after the event.

“It was a time for four friends, all working mums, to carve out time for ourselves. We walked weekly and had hours of opportunities to talk uninterrupted about real-life while getting in some exercise. The four of us developed great friendships, and have even gone on to do other extreme sport together.”

Meanwhile, the conversation around the loop track, then down towards Whale Bay, the Indicators, back up to Whaanga Rd and Karioi Lodge’s Inspiration Point, includes tales of dodgy Thai massages; a hilarious and unrepeatable story about a hammerhead shark diving proposal; the merits of expensive active wear; the demise of sexy lingerie in their wardrobes; and a recall of all the party houses in Whale Bay, pre-children.

Keri says bonding is a big part of the challenge, and one of the reasons why she wants to do it again.

Also: “Oxfam is doing great work around the world, especially here in the South Pacific/Australasia. Finding ways to contribute to significant issues of health and wellbeing is very important to me. And, despite the wrecked feet post-100km, it is a super fun opportunity. I get to develop friendships, new and old, and get some steps in for my own health. It's a winwin!”

But for the other three Nanny Goats, the Trailwalker challenge is a giant step into the unknown.

will be a real mental challenge, kicking in at about the 50km mark.

The challenge requires competitors to walk through the night, come rain, hail or storm.

Footwear is a big topic of discussion: what to buy, what to wear.

Perhaps some Crocs, too, as many competitors are unable to finish the race in shoes because their feet are so broken.

The three anticipate losing toenails, graunching of hips and knackering their knees, and aim to strengthen their stamina with some longer walks, such as the 50km road loop around Mt Karioi.

Are they mad, also?

Yes, some might well say so. he end of the year is hectic for many and most of us are looking forward to a well-deserved holiday. Luckily the herbal kingdom has provided us with a few herbs to help us through these periods.

Rhodiola Is a well-known adaptogenic herb.

was just writing my last column here

hall when people began turning up to attend the funeral service for Craig Purcell, a much-loved member of our community.

The radio station had been able to help out by running a cable to a loudspeaker in the foyer so the people who couldn’t fit in the main hall could still hear what was happening.

Funerals always overflow from the town hall when someone has died too young and this was no exception.

Despite the circumstances, I began to get a good feeling as so many familiar faces began to appear outside my window; some people I knew only by sight, others I knew well. They waved to me on the way past the station door or even stopped in to say hello and it was good to see the community gathering together.

Being part of this community feels really important at times like this and it reminded me of my father’s death a few years back.

The committee running this station arranged for Lilypott florist to deliver a gift to my

place. When I came to the door I met Diane, who used to own Lilypott. She gave me the gift and also gave me a hug and expressed her condolences and I remember thinking how much nicer that was than having a stranger coming to my door on that day.

It often takes something as big as a death to cut through our busyness, and appreciate the community we live in.

I count myself doubly lucky because I have this great job where I interview people from the community on a daily basis. I get to have interesting conversations with people who are making a difference in town, or who are celebrating something significant – and because it’s an interview I get to ask deeper questions than I might ask in a normal conversation.

I spoke to Aaron Brunet straight after the Masterchef win when he was in the middle of a string of national interviews. He really enjoyed talking to us here in Raglan and hearing about the crowd of people who had gathered at the pub to watch the final episode.

I get a kick out of talking to the people who have created projects like Whaingaroa Harbourcare and Xtreme Waste, and am currently loving regular chats with Plastic Bag Free Raglan and The Karioi Project as they start to make a difference, too. I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.

I your friends are having a good time

t’s a sunny, warm day. You and

chatting about life and telling funny stories, but then over time you notice that the conversation is slowly getting quieter and quieter, until finally you are the only person that is interested in keeping conversation.

You look around and try to spark up another conversation only to find that everybody is having some sort of conversation of their own, on their mobile phones.

People between 15 and 19 spend on average at least three hours per day on social media platforms, mainly Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. That is 1095 hours, 45.6 days a year that people of this age are spending on social media. That is not including texting and games. A very wise man called Albert Einstein once said: “I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots.” I feel this quote is now more relevant than ever with the knowledge of how much time today’s youth and future is wasting on a screen; social media that, actually, at the end of the day, is worthless, addictive and mean nothing in “real” life.

How much time do you think that you have spent on social media this week? Now, how much of that time was productive?

Did it benefit you at all? The real question is: how much of it was a waste of time?

Instead of going on social media, could you have been doing something productive? Do your Facebook friends really care “what’s on your mind”? At the end of the day, Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram and all the other social media sites are just a massive black bottomless pit of time-wasting. People argue that it’s great for communicating and catching up with friends, but it is only such a tiny part of our time where people communicate – most of the time is spent scrolling down a news feed in search of funny photos or videos. If we didn’t go on social media, we would be spending a lot more time with our friends. “Isn’t it ironic, how touch screens make us lose touch?” is said in the poem ‘Can We Auto-Correct Humanity’. These social sites are not social, no, they are anti-social and nobody really cares “what’s on your mind”. These sites are a massive waste of time and don’t help you get anywhere in life – if anything, they hold you back because you are just sitting on a couch or lying in bed, not doing anything productive.

The average person spends four years of their life looking down at their phone. That is four years of not paying attention to what is going on around you. When you wake up in the morning what is the first thing that you do? Check the weather? Nah, I bet nearly all of you check if you have received any notifications overnight and inject your morning dose of internet. You then may go on to post “good morning friends”, a picture of your fancy coffee or breakfast, or you might even tell the world what’s on your

mind. I’m not telling you all of this because I’m a stalker and know what you do every morning, I’m telling you this because I know from experience. I, too, was a victim of this drug, I know how addictive it is. You feel the need to go online and see what everybody on your “friends” list is talking about. It wasn’t until my phone broke that I realised how unnecessary and addictive these sites are.

It makes me sad that people are so addicted to these sites, and to get “likes” they will sell their body and self-respect.

Parents would rather film their baby’s first steps than actually experience it first-hand and enjoy the moment. Nowadays if you go to a concert you’ll see the whole crowd lit up by cellphone lights. How are you going to have a good time when you are focused on getting the best angles to film with, just to show your friends how much of a fun time you had? Social media is an addictive “social” trap filled with irony; you claim to be socialising but really you haven’t said a word for hours.

How many friends do you have on Facebook? How many of them do you hang out with regularly? How many of them do you even know well enough to stop them down the street and have a good conversation with? I know for a fact that over half of your friends on Facebook aren’t even your friends in “real life”, half of your “friends” could not care less “what’s on your mind”, and I’m exactly the same.

I have about 500 friends on Facebook, I know about 400 of them, I like about 300 of them; 50 of them I would call my friends and four of them I hang out with in my spare time. So is it true to say “I have 500 friends”? The number of friends or “likes” that you have on social media has absolutely nothing to do with your everyday normal life; people with more likes aren’t living in a better world than you. Once you look away from that tiny little screen that is in the palm of your hand you will straight away be able to see how many friends you really have.

I have been saying that technology is a drug, but another drug that humans get hooked on is fame. People do stuff on social media that they would never do in real life – it turns people into low-key porn stars just for 500 likes. However, do you think that 500 likes will be worth it when your parents and grandparents somehow stumble across their sweet innocent baby girl posting half-naked photos of themselves on the internet? Don’t put so much trust in the internet. Anyone can see anything on the internet, it’s not a safe place even if the website assures you it is.

Just being yourself won’t get you thousands of likes on the internet, but it will get you real friends that you have for life. Nobody is going to remember you for how many likes you got. They will however remember what stupid thing you did to get them.

Our world as we know it is changing faster than we can keep track of and will continue changing as technology and social media advances. Humans are already becoming too brainwashed and addicted to stop this from becoming a problem. Just this morning I saw on the news that a teenage boy has died because he was trying to get a cool picture for Instagram by hanging off a building. This is an example of the heights people are going to for attention on social media and it’s only going to get worse. There is a simple way out of this solution. STOP. Stop looking at your phones more than your friends when you go to their house. Stop filming the concert and live in the moment.

STOP. But that part is up to you. After all, it is your life, so, are you going to live or are you going to show your friends photos of you “living”?
