Dear Editor Goodbye Raglan, hello Hamilton Now I know what my next move will be there is peace of mind. Sometime early in 2017 I will take up a very nice unit in Cascades Retirement Centre, just outside the entrance to Hamilton Lake. So it’s fresh water, not salty like Lorenzen Bay, so I am taking every chance to get immersed in the sea. Salt on my skin means that I can keep my memories of past salty days. I learnt to sail when I was 12 years old. The Mariella was a sturdy carved built boat about 14 feet long.

It had some sheets of iron each side of the centreboard to aid stability.

There were no buoyancy bags and no life jackets.

Keeping the Mariella from dipping its gunwale in a stiff breeze was quite an art. After a couple of years’ experience I was winning adult cups, taking part in racing in Portland Harbour (in Dorset, South England). Enough boasting, the point is that it is a short walk from Cascades to Hamilton Lake where small boat racing is held in summer. It also hasducks and occasional swans. I would not swim or capsize in the water contaminated by their faeces.

I’ll stick to watching the racing from the lakeside and missing Raglan.

Dear Editor Matt’s Monologue (Matt Holl is a former member of the Raglan Community Board.)

I recently read a report about concern over traffic congestion at Wainui Rd’s onelane bridge. The only reason the traffic works on that bridge is through courtesy, which is often, in fact, in breach of the road code.

If a traffic counter was installed at the bridge three days before Christmas and removed at around January 16 the average daily traffic count during the holiday period would be the highest possible recording and create a greater chance of qualifying for a taxpayer roading subsidy for upgrade work.

Some years back I had a traffic counter installed during

the Christmas holiday period and, as co-incidence would have it, Raglan enjoyed an undisrupted spell of fine weather over the New Year holiday period. The town was so busy that, as in softball parlance, all the bases were loaded.

It was the busiest holiday period I have witnessed.

The daily traffic count over Wainui bridge averaged just under 10,000 vehicle movements per day.

In those far off bygone days the average daily traffic count on State Highway 1 through Ngaruawahia was approximately 12,000 vehicles a day.

haingaroa Youth Movement (WYM) has once again grasped the hearts and emotions of our Raglan community, with a very poignant piece, LOOK. This creative group of 65 students took us on a roller-coaster ride of emotions.

Cleverly they explored the vast spectrum of experiences offered via social media, a spectrum with no limits. Each group accurately performed the gamut of realities we involve ourselves in daily: Facebook, Netflix, emoji, angry birds and hackers, among others. We laughed with warm fuzzies and we bowed our heads in sorrow.

We all saw some aspect of ourselves, big or small.

With rock-steady support, vision and devotion to her students, director, producer and dance teacher Patti Mitchley – with the help from choreographer Indya Gibbs, a WYM graduate and now a professional dancer – worked with this outstanding group, aged between 6-18 years, to showcase this intangible world. The fast pace and rapid growth of social media and gaming in our daily lives, and the effects of how we relate to one another, has provoked a conversation worldwide. This is a conversation that our Raglan youth deemed important enough to traverse and investigate; a conversation that they laid out with clear conviction and power; a conversation of substance and without words that they skillfully executed; a conversation that the audience took home and continued.

Gifted set designer Si Williams produced

a multimedia space to explore the idea of being boxed in, narrow visioned, square-eyed, dumbed down, consumed and abbreviated.

Frankie Renyolds’ film contribution was deeply moving. She spoke of freedom, play, space, connection and participation in the living world. Nine wooden boxes were dragged, stacked, climbed and moved in and out of by the troop, allowing the audience to examine and ponder all the aspects we experience in a time of rapid technological advancements: the satisfaction of instant, play, likes, ease and convenience; the fulfillment of blossoming networks, sharing, friendships and connections; the destruction of dependency, addictions, loneliness and obsession; plus the very real dangers of hidden bullies, cruelty, masked violence and deception. All these were all discussed.

The choreography was honest but left room for the imagination. The sophistication and maturity of the dances by the older students were performed with precision and clarity, and were a real treat.

The younger performers were magic. The makeup, the costuming, the music and lighting was evocative and spot on, instantly understandable and recognisable without giving to much away.

It was an epic show, team. You should feel really proud of what you gave!

So, whānau, with this in the forefront of our minds and the summer break upon us, take a leaf from their book. Close your laptop, switch off your phone, LOOK up and connect face to face and hand to hand with your loved ones these holidays.

aglan mums Rebecca Hishon and Charlotte Hartstone know better than most what it must feel like to be Santa’s little helpers – for years now they’ve been amassing toys of all shapes and sizes for sharing out to local families.

But after successfully running the local toy library for a decade they’re now looking to hand over the ... err ... reins.

Rebecca and Charlotte’s own girls – they have six between them – are now well past the pre-school stage but have had a ball over the years “test driving” the new toys as they’ve arrived every few months.

“It’s like Christmas,” the pair laugh, admitting they’ve enjoyed, too, choosing which toys to buy courtesy of their annual Toy Library Federation funding. Generous funding comes also from the Lottery Grants

Board, the Meridian Te Uku Community Fund and the Raglan Lions Club.

Rebecca and Charlotte are the only foundation members left of the five who met downtown in 2006 at the Tongue & Groove – now The Shack – in response to a Chronicle ad for interest in starting up a toy library.

Back then they were first-time mums, both with daughters named Keira. The coincidences continued with their second daughters born on the same day, and even their third babies were just a few months apart.

They’ve also both celebrated a “big birthday” this year and reckon that with no littlies at home any more during the weekdays they’ve done their time. “We know there are [just the right] people out there who are keen to keep providing our families with affordable toys and who can inject some fresh enthusiasm.”

The Whaingaroa Toy Library’s an “awesome” community service, they reckon.

Members pay a yearly fee of $30 then just a 50c, $1 or $2 rental per fortnight for toys worth $50, $100 and $200 respectively.

“It’s incredibly reasonable,” Charlotte told the Chronicle. “We’re one of the cheapest toy libraries in New Zealand.”

It’s also very social and all the hard work’s been done, she says. “It’s just a case of keeping things ticking over now … it’s not like we’re abandoning a sinking ship.”

The library is run a bit like a co-op, Rebecca adds, with each of the 30-odd members taking turns to help out between 10am and noon on a Monday when a paid librarian issues the toys.

The pair hope for a smooth transition and say they’ll be there to support the newbies, whether they’re young parents or maybe even grandparents with time on their hands.

“It would be a shame to close the toy library down after a decade of developing it to where it is today.”

They point out that no particular skills are needed, and “everything can be learned as you go”.

This year the library – which is both a charitable trust and incorporated society – became more accessible to many parents when it shifted from its long-held premises at Te Uku Hall to a one-time counselling room in the basement of The House downtown.

Toys to be loaned fill the room but there’s always space for new ones, Rebecca says, because the high-use equipment is “culled” regularly.

Raglan Community Board News in-Brief New buses for Raglan

T will get three brand-new buses he Raglan-Hamilton bus service

when the new contract goes live in April next year.

WRC public transport operations manager Andrew Wilson, who spoke at the community board meeting last week, said the buses would have more seats; improved on-board storage for luggage, including surfboard racks and bike racks; on-board

CCTV cameras and free passenger wifi.

WRC has awarded the new contract to Go Bus, and it will include an additional trip every weekday between Raglan and Hamilton, a return of Sunday and public holiday services, except for Christmas Day, and more services to Manu Bay during the summer school holidays. The council will be seeking feedback on the draft timetable and route at a later date, possibly early next year.

Gang lifestyle attractive to kids

C

oncerns about gang members recruiting youths in Raglan were brought up with guest speaker acting senior sergeant Mike Henwood at the Raglan Community Board last week.

Mr Henwood told the community board that it was a reality that gang members tried to “get into the head of kids” at an early age, and it effectively was the same thing that had been done to them. “It

comes down to the message from parents and schools. Why are you getting involved in this?” He said recruiting youth was part of the gang lifestyle; a career selling drugs and stealing was considered an attractive lifestyle by some young people, if they could see the benefits that the money would bring, like a flash car or property.

Mr Henwood said there were some new patched members in Raglan but they had already had associations with the gang and weren’t new to town.

ompetitors either love or hate C the Raglan Karioi Trail (RKT) mountain race – much like the steep course, it seems there is no middle ground regarding opinions of the extreme running event.

But a record number of entries this year, many of them return runners, proves that far more people love the epic 24km race that traverses Mt Karioi twice, than swear to “never, ever do that again”.

On Saturday, RKT was held for the fourth year in ideal conditions for competitors: overcast, cool and with scattered showers in the afternoon – although, unfortunately, the mist on the top of the mountain robbed the runners of spectacular views.

The 180 registrations for this year’s 24km and 10km run, and a new 10km walk, were more than double the 75 of last year.

Organisers Francois Mazet and Rachel Brown are stoked with the increasing popularity of their race.

Most of the runners competed in the 24km race – about 85 entries – while 15 entered the 10km walk.

“Unbelievable,” says Rachel, of the interest in the toughest race that includes 1850 metres of uphill and downhill through farmland, bush and mud, and involves clambering up and down tree roots, rocks, ladders and chains.

“It just goes to show there are a more than a few loonies out there.”

Francois, a keen skier and trail runner from French Basque Country, says a quarter of the competitors were from Raglan, “which is amazing”, and many international tourists took part, including travellers from Canada, England, Sweden, Italy and France. A couple flew up especially for the race from Dunedin.

Francois says it is not surprising to get many internationals competing because mountain running is a popular sporting event in Europe, but there were competitors from Raglan who had never even been up Mt Karioi before.

“There are many races in Europe at 5000 (feet) plus high … it’s all bam, bam, bam, up and down ... it’s a bit new to New Zealand, and a success, which is cool.”

RKT 2016 24km winner Chris Morrisey, from Tauranga, knew what he was getting himself into. He has entered every race so far and it was his third win, finishing in just under three hours, after placing second last year.

Still: “It was not as easy as I thought, halfway through.”

His mate, Dennis De Monchy, who had entered RKT for the first time, was hard on his tail but had to settle for second.

“It was Chris’ terrain,” Dennis says of the second ascent from Karioi Lodge. “I couldn’t catch him.

“It was great fun. I liked the tree rooty, muddy stuff. I smashed out some nice fast kilometres … I will be back. It’s a beautiful race.”

Twins Lina and Sanna El Kott Helander, on holiday from Sweden, smashed first and second place in the women’s 24km race, with times of 3:20:43 and 3:26:12.

Lina, who was third place-getter overall, says she and her sister do a lot of mountain running at home so there were no surprises about the toughness of the trail. They made it look like easy work.

“It was really fun, up and down all the time, really muddy,” says Lina.

While fun was a common theme of the day, many first-time competitors admitted that they had totally underestimated the track.

One competitor from Auckland announced to his friends on Facebook: “Today I learned that some trail races are predominantly climbing near vertical mud banks on all fours by pulling yourself up by tree roots and branches, that a 1.9km ascent over 24km is pretty steep, and training for it by running on roads is pointless haha (sic).”

Fraser Quin commented on the Raglan Karioi Trail Facebook page: “Thanks for yesterday, team. I underestimated how challenging that course was going to be! I'll be back next year looking for a better time!”

Sandrine Douarin wrote: “RKT, what an amazing trail! Elevation, mud, rocks ... Very technical, enjoyed a lot running even if it was tough and mudddddddddy! Thanks for the fantastic organisation, the sponsors, the volunteers and the supporters! For sure will be back next year.”

Rachel, who competed in the 10km run for the first time this year, says it was nice to experience the race as a runner, “especially the camaraderie”.

“There were loads of people helping each other out, sharing food and water, and keeping spirits buoyed throughout the course.

“It’s getting well known, people are going back and talking about it.

“People are commenting that it is on their bucket list for next year.”

Electric vehicle fast charger a “benefit” to local community Raglan will now be a popular destination for owners of electric vehicles with the installation of a fast charger by Wel Networks.

Wel Networks CEO Garth Dibley, who was in Raglan when the fast charger went live on Monday afternoon, says day-trippers and holidaymakers now would have no concerns about not making it back home again in their EVs, which currently only have a run time of about 180km per charge.

The Raglan unit, which is free to use and sited next to the Plunket building in Bow St, is the third of five being installed across the Waikato by Wel Networks.

The fast charger can charge an EV in 15 minutes, compared with overnight charging from home.

WEL Networks asset management general manager Paul Blue says WEL is excited about expanding the region’s electric vehicle footprint.

“The Raglan site offers a number of benefits for EV drivers and the local business community.

“We’re starting to see the emergence of electric vehicles on our roads and, while still in its infancy, we do expect use of EVs to grow significantly.”

The government’s Electric Vehicles Programme has a target of doubling the number of electric

vehicles in New Zealand every year to reach about 64,000 by 2021.

Middle-aged men's bowls tournament The annual Middle-aged Men’s Bowls Competition was held in stunning conditions at our local bowling club last Friday.

Twenty-eight locals entered this year, which resulted in 14 men’s pairs battling it out over four rounds of bowls. All were eager to win each round to give them the best opportunity to secure the coveted winner’s trophy.

After some fiercely competitive bowling, the men’s pair of Marty Verry and Andy Meek emerged victorious.

Adoption of Local Alcohol Policy

Section 90 (1) Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 Waikato District Council advises that, following a decision of the Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority on 29 September 2016 in respect of appeals received against Council’s Provisional Local Alcohol Policy, the Provisional Local Alcohol Policy has now been adopted and therefore ceases to be provisional.

Council advises that at its meeting on 5 December 2016 it was resolved to bring the entire policy, with the exception of clauses 4.6, 5.6 and 6.6 relating to maximum trading hours, into force on 1 January 2017. Clauses 4.6, 5.6 and 6.6 will come into force on 1 April 2017.
