Goodness what a fuss about the visitors who use wifi outside the library. In all the times I have visited the library to use the facilities I’ve never been obstructed or inconvenienced.

lenty of dogs and a couple of horses were among the small crowd to welcome New Zealand director Taika Waititi and some of the cast of his latest movie, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre on Sunday afternoon.

Raglan won the visit by putting on the best rural cinema premiere for the movie on Wednesday last week, an event that included a hog on a hog (a kunekune on the back of a Harley Davidson) and the audience dressing up in the theme of going bush.

About 250 people, a number dressed up in costume of their favourite characters, waited for Taika, Julian Dennison (who plays the star role of Ricky Baker) and Rima Te Wiata (Aunt Bella) to arrive.

They were welcomed into the Old School Arts Centre car park with a karanga.

Taika, who is off to Australia next to direct the Marvel’s third instalment of Thor, said he was blown away by the premiere held by the Raglan community, and it was that sense of community that he had wanted to capture in his film.

The film is based on the book Wild Pork and Watercress by Barry Crump, and is about a national manhunt for a kid and

his foster uncle who go missing in New Zealand bush.

“It’s one of the most Kiwi films I have made. It’s about all of us. It’s about capturing the Kiwi sense of adventure,” said Taiki, who grew up watching Kiwi films that celebrated the renegade and the underdog, films such as Smash Palace and Goodbye Pork Pie. “I tried to capture that same spirit. To make stories that we want to see about ourselves.

There was still a sense of community in New Zealand, that he didn’t see anywhere else in the world, he said.

Taika said he wanted to make a film that the whole family could enjoy watching together.

“I made this stupid vampire film and they rated it R13. I wanted to make something that kids could see as well.”

He said his film Boy held the opening box office records of any New Zealand film, “but sadly for that little film this one is going to beat that record”.

Julian Dennison, who plays rap-loving foster care kid Ricky Baker in the film, had the audience laughing over his confusion of the name of the town: Ragland or Raglan?

He said he had whanau living in the town, and his “aunty”, Pauline Sweetman, won a selfie with the young star.

One Raglan youngster showed Julian his Michael Jackson dance moves.

Rima Te Wiata, who plays Aunt Bella, joked she was “really looking forward to going to the loo” after drinking a big bottle of water in the car coming down from Auckland.

Of the film she said: “I had a ball doing this film with Taika, he’s absolutely amazing. I really had the best time even though my character carks it early on.”

Raglan boys Tom Hannon and Alex Bradley each won a Swanndri for their winning costumes – both were dressed as character Psycho Sam, who is played by Rhys Darby.

Taika said the guys looked awesome: “This is what my army would look like if I was in control.”

Alex said it was a great experience to meet Taika and Julian because the film was awesome.

He said Julian had asked if he could touch the possum fur on his chest, which was funny, and both of them were really nice.

Raglan Community Board deputy chairman Bob MacLeod won a prize for looking like the spitting image of Uncle Hec (played by Sam Neil), while a dog also won a selfie with the stars for dressing up in camouflage.

e Mata farmer Andrew Buchanan sometimes sees a “beautiful” lake on his 1800-acre sheep and beef property -- and other times doesn’t.

It’s not that he’s delusional or has poor eyesight: Lake Disappear, as it’s aptly called, comes and goes every year depending on the rainfall.

“If we have four or five inches of rain tonight, for instance, it would start it off (filling up again),” Andrew told the Chronicle last Sunday.

The lake forms when there’s more water than can drain out of a sinkhole in its southwest corner, and for much of the year it’s a “substantial” two-kilometre long stretch -- up to 15 metres deep -- on which Andrew and his family have in the past enjoyed jet-boating and sailing.

“I find it beautiful,” says Andrew of the now-you-see-it, now-you-don’t lake. “And it’s good for duck-shooting too.”

The lake is just over 20 km from Raglan and four kilometres beyond Bridal Veil Falls. The south end can be seen from Kawhia Road and the north end -- when it is full -- from the point at the end of Plateau Road on the Pipiwharauroa Trail, which climbs from near the Bridal Veil Falls up to the Te Uku wind farm.

And though described by Wikipedia as “intermittent”, the lake can remain sometimes for 12 months, Andrew’s been told by a local. “But it’s mostly gone by January,” he reckons.

Andrew says the land agent who sold him the property 20-odd years ago made sure he pointed out the then dry alluvial flats that would fill up during prolonged heavy rain. “So I couldn’t sue him for the loss of land,” he jokes.

Longtime local Sheryl Ker -- who these days lives in Bankart Street -- also knows all about the disappearing lake, one which coincidentally she recently revisited with

the weekly walking group the Raglan Ramblers.

“It’s amazing!” she says of the phenomenon. Sheryl and her four siblings grew up there, the land farmed first by her grandparents, then her parents and finally by her brother Ian White before being sold to a neighbour and then on to Andrew.

Sheryl remembers geologists coming to the family farm to see for themselves the area known as the Pakihi Valley which fills up and drains through the limestone sinkhole.

She remembers eeling with her brothers and sisters in the creek there and loving it, but says that for safety reasons they were “not allowed to go to the hole” near the roadside. “It’s a big hole and the water whirls around like when a plug’s pulled out of a sink.”

The water then goes underground and re-emerges one kilometre on - on Giles Lusty’s farm - where it joins Te Maari Stream and runs into Aotea Harbour.

Wikipedia explains that the wetlandcum-lake was formed about two million years ago when lava and ash came from a vent on Whatipu, just over a kilometre away, and blocked the Pakihi Valley. The Pakihi Stream found its way underneath the large enclosed basin, but cannot drain fast enough in wet weather so the hollow fills up and becomes a lake.

True to its name, if there has been little rain the lake drains away and simply disappears.

As regular mid-week Rambler John Lawson observes: “It’s unique … there’s not too many areas like it around the world.”

A similar phenomenon happens with a placid mountain lake in central Oregon in the United States. It similarly lives up to its name, Lost Lake, by draining away down a lava tube each spring only to reappear on schedule with the onset of winter.

Locals work alongside international experts to lay submarine cable

locals have been working R aglan alongside a team of international specialist submarine cable experts to lay a section of the Tasman Global Access (TGA) undersea cable.

Vodafone external communications manager Elissa Downey said work began on digging a trench and laying a stretch of cable under the sand at Ngarunui Beach, by the surf lifeguard tower, on Friday and was expected to be completed this week.

The MV Tranquil Image, a specially fitted-out New Zealand vessel, was burying a 3-kilometre stretch of fibre optic cable from Ngarunui Beach, through the surf zone and into the ocean, she said.

“Once the Raglan shore landing works are complete, a larger specialised ship will arrive in New Zealand to connect the next section of cable, taking it across the Tasman and eventually connecting it to the Narrabeen Beach landing in Australia.

“By mid this week, visible works on Raglan’s shoreline will be complete.

Remaining works may continue out to sea over the coming weeks, however this will have a very low impact on the local community.”

Completed, the length of cable will be 2300km.

Ms Downey said a range of Raglanbased businesses and labourers had worked on the TGA project, including work such as excavation, deck hands on the MV Tranquil

She said the international team had enjoyed local accommodation and other hospitality services in town.

“We have put a notice out to local horseriding clubs and organisations that the sand on the beach where the works have taken place may be softer than usual until the end of next week. For this reason, we recommend riders avoid taking their horse past the mark where the main surf club sits on the hill.”

The $103 million TGA cable project is a joint venture by Vodafone, Spark New Zealand and Telstra.

“Vodafone and its consortium partners would like to extend a huge thank you to the Raglan community for their support and understanding during the beach works phase of the TGA undersea cable project,” said Ms Downey.

“Vodafone also wishes to acknowledge the support of local iwi who have been heavily involved in the planning of the project.”

The TGA cable is currently on track to be completed, tested and ready for service by the end of 2016.

Ms Downey said the TGA cable was a “truly green project, in keeping with the ethos of Raglan”.

“It will produce only short-term minor impacts on the environment that after one tide change will not be noticed, yet delivers limitless benefit for all of New Zealand in the long-term.

“The TGA cable will enable New Zealand to better leverage the five main international cable systems currently serving Australia … as well as strengthening links into fastgrowing Asian markets.”

Aeronavics director Linda Bulk says her company has become the sole provider of droids (more commonly known as drones or UAVs) for Airscope Industries, which specialises in aerial asset inspections.

Linda says Airscope Industries is looking at its fleet of drones as an airline.

“It’s a fantastic partnership.

“We are definitely looking to partner with more companies like Airscope rather than trying to sell drones to individuals … they are a great client, very professional.”

Linda and her husband, Rob Brouwer, who met in Australia, moved to Raglan about four years ago, after looking for a place in New Zealand to settle their business.

“We needed to find roots for our company,” says Linda, “because we need flying space, hey, and it worked out well.”

They have an arrangement with a neighbouring farmer on Okete Rd, where the company is based, “and he is happy with that”.

She says Airscope Industries, which is a relatively new company, approached them for their aerial robotic technology.

“They sort of had gone all around the world to find suitable equipment.

“We are still even a fledgling company, but in the world of drones we are quite established.”

Aeronavics was the first company in the world to sell drones for professional use.

Airscope Industries took delivery of a number of their drones at the end of last year, and more will be supplied in line with the company’s growth plans. Airscope aims to have an east coast presence in Australia by mid-year, extending this to include New Zealand by the end of 2016 and South America and South East Asia in 2017.

Linda believes that the use of Aeronavics craft within the environment of the oil and gas sector is a testament to the quality and reliability of its droids.

“We pride ourselves in designing and manufacturing reliable aerial robotics solutions for a range of situations, including dangerous or unstable environments as found within the oil and gas industry.”

Airscope Industries’s other clients include civil engineering companies, councils, electricity companies and the agricultural sector, all businesses with assets that need inspection.

Linda says Aeronavics has three basic models of droids.

The smallest weighs about 5kg-6kg, is capable of carrying about 1.2kg in weight, generally travels at about 90kmh, and has a flight time of 35 minutes, while the largest droid weighs about 25kg-30kg, can carry 15kg, travels at about 50kmh-70kmh and has a flight time of about 20 minutes. The drones can be operated by computer programming, joystick or radio control.

“There is a lot of innovation here, a lot of pushing the envelope,” says Linda, who laughs that she contributes the least to any new developments.

Aeronavics has five engineers involved in production, and another five working in research and development.

Altogether, the team consists of 22 employees.

Linda says the company is currently seeking investors in a capital raising of $5 million to further product development and for expansion, including building new international channels and service centres.

“We are talking with people right now. Possibly in the next couple of weeks it will be all done and dusted, but it could take a couple of months. There are always conversations to be had, it takes a while.”

In February last year, Aeronavics raised $1.5m through an equity crowd-funding campaign, with 213 investors taking a total 15 per cent stake in the company.

Surf Life Saving urgently seeks revision of collaborative funding

S

urf Life Saving is provisionally supporting a new collaborative funding scheme contained in the Waikato Region’s 2016/17 Draft Annual Plan.

Historically funding has been sourced from individual local bodies which have been fully supportive but recently have been unable to fund services to the required level. The proposed scheme will result in Waikato Regional Council taking responsibility for funding support for lifeguard services provided in the Waikato Region on the west and east coast.

While Surf Life Saving is supportive of the new concept, it is concerned that the preferred council funding model (Option 2) has been budgeted at a level lower than that received by Surf Life Saving for the current season.

Chief Executive Officer of Surf Life Saving Northern Region, Matt Williams said that while resources put into developing the Volunteer Emergency Service funding in the Waikato Region draft annual plan are a significant step forward, the organisation is disappointed that its preferred budget option is not included in the Plan. He says it’s imperative the public is fully informed of all options and the impact of each option on the level of service provided.

“We are aware the public expectation is that we continue to provide the very best service possible. Sadly none of the current funding models proposed by Council allow for this,” said Mr Williams. “If the current budget is adopted, Surf Life Saving would have to consider reducing services – including week day beach patrols.”

February saw the end of a long tradition of Open Mic Nights being held on the last Thursday of the Month.

Henceforth, Open Mic Nights will be held on the first Thursday of every Month. We’ll take a detour around March and we’ll resume on April the 7th from 9 pm at the Orca Restaurant and Bar. We are hoping that this will end any confusion when months have five Thursdays. Your diligent organisers will also appreciate having a little less to do around month-end!
