Dear Editor: Raglan and the car invasion When I arrived in New Zealand in the 1970s, with my then wife and four sons, the New Zealand roads were very basic.

The first time we drove to Raglan it was like entering an American wild west small town.

Eventually we found a beach and were not impressed by black sand.

We had previously enjoyed the white sand and palm trees of our afternoons in Ghana (The University at Cape Coast had a school of its own which started at 7am and ended at 1pm).

Arriving in New Zealand, we drove down from Auckland Airport to Hamilton. There were so few cars that driving in a half-awake state was easy.

Now Raglan is awash with cars, especially on holiday weekends like the recent Anzac Day. Not just sensible little cars like my

Even on an ordinary day it can be hard to find a slot, but on holidays, it’s a nightmare.

We could go back to a horse and buggy but think how long it would take to go to Hamilton if you work there. Just time for lunch and then back again. In case it comes to that, buy a nice bonnet for riding in the buggy ladies.

callop shells painted bright red were used to make the petals of gorgeous, big poppies on one of the many wreaths laid at the cenotaph during Raglan’s Anzac Day ceremony on Monday.

The wreath by Raglan Area School’s room 12 students was among the 35 or so wreaths that were laid out in memory of New Zealanders who have served and died in past wars and conflicts.

Hundreds of people attended the Anzac Day service, and followed the procession of the Raglan Pipe Band, New Zealand army, navy and air force, veterans, coastguard, fire service, police, St John, two horses, a Red Cross donkey and school pupils from Wainui Rd to the cenotaph, outside the library in Bow St. The rain mostly held off for the duration of the service, although there were showers for the bugle call of the Last Post and the lowering of the New Zealand flag.

The service marked a century since the first commemoration of Anzac Day on the shores of the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey.

Master of ceremonies Saen O’Brien, the new president of the Raglan Club,

welcomed special guests Taranaki/King Country MP Barbara Kuriger, Waikato District Councillor Clint Baddeley, Raglan Community Board chairman Alan Vink, and Raglan Community Arts Council chairman Rodger Gallagher.

Mr O’Brien said it had been 101 years since the landing at Gallipoli, in a campaign that claimed the lives of 2779 New Zealanders.

“We have come here to reflect on one of the bloodiest battles our country has been involved in.

“Many of our soldiers had never left home before … and many never returned.”

Reverend Kathleen Gavin, who led the service along with kaumatua Sean Ellison, said the commemoration was also to honour those who had fought in any war, not just the campaign at Gallipoli.

She said the Gallipoli experience of 1915 had somewhat overshadowed what happened in Somme, 1916-1918, where even a greater number of New Zealanders had lost their lives.

She said the Battle of Somme was New Zealand’s first major engagement on the Western Front. Of 15,000 soldiers in the New Zealand Division, one in seven who

fought was killed and four in ten were wounded.

“Today we honour them for their bravery and sacrifice,” she said, “and honour those who fought in any war.

“May their sacrifice never be forgotten.”

Raglan Area School students Ziggy Knuiman and Ella McLeod-Edwards both shared stories of family members who had served in wars.

Ziggy said even today, most young people had family members or friends who had been casualties of war.

He spoke of a great, great uncle who was killed in World War I in France, and whose letters home had given an insight into the atrocities of war, of surviving explosions and the “shocking manner” in which soldiers were killed.

Ella spoke of her grandfather, the youngest of 13 brothers who had lied about his age to go to war, and who fought in and survived both world wars.

“He was the only brother to survive.”

Following the service, the Raglan Club put on afternoon tea for the community.

Whaingaroa Hoe attracts record number of entries

record number of boats lined up across the harbour for the 8km race of Raglan’s annual waka regatta, held last weekend.

Whaingaroa Whanau Hoe Waka spokeswoman Amber Hartstone says there were 58 waka in the 8km novice open and junior divisions race, a total of 348 paddlers, up from 54 boats in last year’s race.

Amber says the 8km race is extremely popular as it is “a really attainable distance for new paddlers”.

She says Raglan’s waka regatta is very popular and the largest and longest-running long distance waka ama race in New Zealand.

“It’s the biggest race outside of national sprints and secondary school sprint nationals.

“Paddlers and supporters love coming to Raglan, not only for the race but to stay and enjoy our town.”

One hundred teams from 30 waka clubs competed in Raglan on Saturday.

However, Amber says the number of boats competing in the 24km races was halved this year due to teams training and saving money for the world sprint races in Australia, which is being held at the

beginning of May. “New Zealand has a large contingent going to the Sunshine Coast in two weeks: national elite selection crews and club crews who qualified at nationals in January. Many of the top (elite) paddlers who normally paddle in club crews at our race were not available so this contributed lower entries in our 24km events.”

The Raglan club has an open women’s team going to the worlds, and Conan Herbert, who is a Raglan paddler, is in the men’s national elite team representing New Zealand.

At the Raglan regatta on Saturday, three local teams competed. “Whaingaroa” won the junior mixed 8km; Taiaroha came second in the novice women’s 8km race; and Roosters came fifth in the novice men’s 8km.

“For most of our local novice paddlers this was their first distance race. They paddled really well, and it was cool to see them get a prize.”

Pineula Boom Bullets, from Akarana, won the open men’s 24km race, but the fastest men’s team over the course was Turangawaewae Masters from Turangawaewae.

The open women’s 24km was won by Tui Tonga, which also won the Chrissy Herbert Memorial Trophy for fastest women’s team over the 24km course.

Amber says conditions this year were favourable for fast times, especially in the morning.

“It was an amazing day, the sunny calm weather made it easy to host. The tide levels made the biggest difference this year with the morning races having more water, but by afternoon the men in the 24km were challenged by shallower water and strong currents.”

Amber says the regatta is an annual fundraiser for the club.

“All profits stay in the club to nurture waka ama in Raglan.

“As always, thanks to all our supporters, whanau and the club members who take a lot of pride in hosting a pretty cool event.

“Theres a growing number of people, from members to medics to boat drivers and our kaumatua, who have been involved in the race for five, 10 and up to 22 years.

We are really lucky that we are so well supported. All that aroha and experience is part of what makes the Hoe special for us and the competitors.”

Ruby's new website Surf Box aims to empower female surfers.

The 22-year-old, who has been coaching surfing for six years, has just started up her new website, The Surf Box, to help women reach their highest potential in the water.

She offers top tips for improving skills and motivation, video analysis coaching, and advice on fitness training and nutrition.

Ruby says often the surfing stereotype is for women to look good, have the bleached-blonde hair and ride a pink hibiscus-flowered surfboard.

“I hate that,” she says. “That takes away from the fact that women can actually perform.

“I’m trying to move away from that and help develop women’s skills in the water to become good surfers.

“Women have a reputation for not being so confident in the water, and often bring that on themselves, too, because of the

expectation from society. They don’t push themselves as much.”

Ruby, who surfed competitively while growing up in Auckland, moved to Raglan at the age of 18.

She has degrees in sports science and teaching from Waikato University, and works as a relief teacher, but says she didn’t want to teach fulltime in schools.

“I decided that that was far too conservative for me and I wanted to go on my own route,” says Ruby, who also works at Raglan Roast in Volcom Lane.

So she set up The Surf Box a few months ago and is concentrating on teaching her passions: surfing, a healthy lifestyle and good nutrition.

“Surfing is quite a saturated market, especially for men,” says Ruby, about looking for her niche in the industry.

“I am a woman. People would say to me ‘you get so many waves in the water’, they would says things like that to me, and I realised that I had a knowledge to pass on.

“I love surfing myself, I love surfing with other girls or women, and I want to make a lifestyle out of it where I can share my knowledge of coaching, surfing and natural health and fitness with others.”

Ruby acknowledges that there are “definitely heaps more women surfers” nowadays, but when and where they surf often “depends on the conditions”.

“On the beach where it is small and soft it might be 30-70, women to men,” she says of a day out in Raglan. “But on a big day at Indies I will be the only woman out, among maybe 40 men.”

She says her aim is to coach women to surf at a performance-based level, where they feel strong and fit enough to take on the big waves: “Giving confidence through words and also technically helping them out.”

One part of Ruby’s business is video analysis coaching, where women can send in footage of them surfing for appraisal.

Using split-screen analysis software, Ruby compares the footage with that of a professional surfer on a similar wave or doing a similar turn.

“I slow them both right down … and give a voice-over analysis of how they can improve their technique.”

Ruby says her website has been getting about 1000 hits a week, and she has been fielding questions from all over the world, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia and Dubai.

She says her focus isn’t about making money this year, but building a following and attracting advertisers.

“I haven’t made much money from it so far but I have had a few companies contact me to advertise their products.”

With her eye on the future, Ruby says she’s also thinking about writing ebooks on surfing and nutrition, but what she’d like most, if she can get a big enough following, is to hold all-women’s high performance surf camps around the world.

“Maybe even making it my fulltime job.”

This week the Chronicle caught up with local photographer Leanne Roughton.

Digital is awesome. The technology keeps improving and the ability to see what you’ve taken straight away gives more freedom to experiment. You do have to remember to print your favourites and back up files as there’s always a risk of losing them!

Tell us a little about how you started with photography?

Photography has been a hobby most of my life and only developed into paid work much later on. I started going to photography night classes and workshops after our second child was stillborn.

I was in a sad place for a long time, but I found that absorbing myself in something I was passionate about helped me through my grief. I was fascinated by the darkroom process and read countless photography books and magazines from the library.

After having two more children I had a significant health scare and realised that life is too short to not follow your heart.

I started taking photos for families and eventually weddings. For the last few years I’ve been helping the team at Marque Brand Studios during the wedding season.

What equipment do you use?

Canon 5D Mark II and a few L series lenses. I love my telephoto for weddings as I can keep out of the way of what’s going on but still get in close for the important moments. I also enjoy primes and for editing I use Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.

Do you like shooting in digital or…?

What are some of your favourite things to shoot?

My children doing fun things outdoors… I guess it’s the memories I love to capture and the fun we have looking back on them. I also enjoy helping other families get photos together.. and I love weddings!

Last five photos you shot?

Surfers at Manu Bay. Are there any photographers or artists that you are inspired by?

There are so many, but some of my current favourites for inspiration would be Roberto Valenzuela, Jerry Ghionis, and Sue Bryce. NZ photographers include Isaac & Amber de Reus (Perspectives Photography), Rachel Callander, Mark Hamilton, and Trevor Penfold (Raglan).

Probably a stand out funny/awkward moment would be when I was waiting in the hallway for the guys to suit up and the father of the groom came dashing out of the bathroom after his shower – he’d forgotten to take a towel with him and had to run dripping wet right past me! I resisted the urge to take a photo.

Natural, fun and candid.

Have you got any funny photo shoot experiences?

At weddings I often take shots of guys getting ready, so it’s always a lot of laughs.

I wanted to use something local and current .. and I liked the significance of the NZ flag after all the debate about changing it.

Giving a voice to the not so talked of topics and to celebrate the unsung heroes who have contributed to our town’s surf history. Over the past few months, we have been introduced to a lineup of names that anyone would be proud to surf alongside. ohnny Osbourne is an absolute legend - a peer of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh J and Lee Scratch Perry - who created

the classics 'Buddy Bye', 'No Ice Cream Sound' and 'Little Sound Boy'. The title of 'Legend' is a well-deserved moniker for Errol 'Johnny' Osbourne, accurately describing his contribution to Reggae music as it has evolved from the local Jamaican community to the international arena. Don't miss this one-time show at the YOT Club this Saturday!

His song 'Sing Jay Stylee' is viewed by many as the precursor to the dancehall phenomenon evidenced in popular Jamaican music culture today. The evolution of this aspect in the '80s prompted an increase in sound systems around the globe and necessitated the need for “dubs”.

As sound system selectors in every crevice and corner of the world craved to establish dominance, the demand for “dubs” escalated immensely.

Max Glazer moves dance floors from New York to Jamaica to China. As co-founder (along with Kenny Meez) of the ground breaking and taste making Federation Sound he has spent the last 15 years bringing dancehall and reggae to the masses. Max has worked with an almost never-ending string of artists on their rise to international fame. Sean Paul and Vybz Kartel both count Glazer as an early collaborator and supporter of their careers. Perhaps most importantly, he spent three years as Musical Director/DJ for Rihanna at the start of her meteoric rise to international stardom.

Max has appeared on numerous television shows and stages around the globe while DJing celebrity events for Naomi Campbell, Rihanna, Usher, Gucci, Cipriani’s, Diddy and many more.

While releasing original music on the Federation Sound label, Max Glazer has also been tapped to executive produce several compilation albums directed at bringing caribbean music to the masses – dancehall classics on Sequence/Ultra and Miss Lily’s Family Style, the first music release from New York’s ultra hip Jamaican eatery.

Raglan rower selected for New Zealand Junior Team

R

aglan sculler and Fraser High School student Claudia Macdonald has once again proven herself as one of the best junior rowers in the country with a selection into the women’s quadruple scull team for the 2016 World Rowing Junior Championships being held in Rotterdam, Netherlands from 21 - 28 August.

Junior trials were held between 17-23 April at Lake Karapiro following the Maadi Cup regatta, where Claudia placed third in the under-18 women’s single scull event.

Alan Cotter, Rowing New Zealand High Performance Director acknowledged the strength of the junior team selected for 2016.

“It’s been a good week of racing and the athletes have performed to a very high level, the best that we’ve seen in recent years. Rowing New Zealand is confident that the athletes selected have the ability to perform at the highest level. The junior team is an important part of the pathway to representing New Zealand at the elite level and it’s heartening to see such promising athletes joining the programme.”

Rowing New Zealand will send a total of eight crews made up of a women’s coxless four, women’s quadruple scull, men’s double scull, men’s quadruple scull, men’s eight as well as a reserve women’s double scull, reserve men’s pair and reserve men’s single scull to Rotterdam.

With each interview, I have picked up on a specific passion that each person carries with them. Each one revelling in their own experiences in the water, but sharing a similar feeling all the same.

Whether they are still surfing today or not, they all get that same look when talking about the surf.

You’ve probably seen it too, when the surf is pumping and the sky is clear.

Those picture perfect blue corduroy lines painted across the sea that can bring a smile to every local grom and exhausted traveller alike.

To say you’ve ‘surfed Raglan’ is to say you’ve surfed one of the top 20 breaks in the world. It’s a tick box on many bucket lists. As people set out in search of a simpler kind of life–and as the need for constant connectivity and sharing online increases, the amount of people in the water will continue to grow, year by year.

If you have been paying attention, you’ll know that the community is looking at different ways in which we can accommodate the ever-growing influx of travellers looking to cross Manu Bay and Raglan off their list.

As town experiences this massive growth period of both visitors and residents, efforts are being made to better understand what the communities concerns are.

So why are we telling you this?

This is a surf column. You’re reading this to learn about the surf, right?

Our goal with the column was to ultimately, ‘shine a light on the past, present and future’ of surfing in Raglan.

Whether you are a local or you are a visitor, if you are reading this, you have probably recognised and felt that same passion about the waves and the water, and about the town in general. It’s an undeniable feeling that has woven itself into the unwritten history books to become a part of Raglan’s surf culture.

Some would say a feeling that has been created by Tāwhirimātea and Tangaroa.

Because of that, it is important to respect and protect it.

We have recognised this respect through the stories we have heard from

those who were here in the beginning of Raglan’s surfing days. And from those who are here now, inspired by their love for the water to do what they can to bring awareness to the environmental impacts that both nature and man might have.

As surfers, they have taken their experiences in the water and utilised them for the betterment of the community. For the protection of the surf breaks.

We have felt the passion of those who first surfed The Point in the early '60s, and experienced the excitement of some of the first surfboard shapers of Raglan. We have witnessed the drive of those currently fighting for better water quality, taking a stand against seabed mining and putting in endless hours to understand both the threats to our home break and others around the country...

To quote the words of my ol’ friend, Bob Dylan, “The times they are a-changin’...”

The Raglan way of life as we know it is being molded by outside forces.

Whether you like it or not, this will continue to happen. But Raglan is not alone. Surfing and the seaside lifestyle has driven people around the world, in search of the perfect wave.

For the most part, surfers respect the water and it’s environment all the same, no matter where they go. But I’m sure we have all witnessed the few who .... ruin it for everyone. For lack of a better term.

The purpose of the research being done by current community groups is to listen to the town, to understand what individual community members see as a threat to the lifestyle they cherish.

A lifestyle that was inspired by the surf.

So now what?

There are various platforms for you to utilise your voice, give your feedback and your hopes for the future.

From Community Board meetings to the eCoast survey, and the many local environmental groups taking consistent action. It’s important for the locals to be an example to visitors, to the new faces that have moved into town. If they don’t know or can’t see the respect, how are they supposed to know?

The purpose of this week’s column is to hopefully implore you to take advantage of these opportunities, right now, before it’s too late. Growth and visitors are inevitable. But just as the waves shaped the ledge out at Manu, the community as surfers and non-surfers alike can shape the future of Raglan.

Decade of practice pays off for local health provider

M

ost of us have lived with pain and discomfort at some point during our

lives.

Linda Keen was looking for a practical solution to this common problem when she began her studies in 2006.

It was around this time that she began training in massage therapy and two years later began ‘doula training’ (professionals who offer support to expectant mothers and their partners during childbirth).

This led Linda to working with the “gentle birth

method” as researched and described by childbirth guru Dr Gowri Motha.

Through this work Linda was introduced to the effectiveness of Bowen therapy (a type of physical manipulation) in 2009 and could see first hand the results of relief from discomfort and pain in her clients.

Over the years Linda has worked with Bowen and Myoskeletal therapies, massage and postural evaluation, which has helped her develop a unique approach to her work.

“I also incorporate mindful awareness and simple, customized exercises for each client as they are ready….and often teach simple selfhelp techniques as well,” says Linda.

According to Linda, Bowen therapy can also help with most ailments.

“I have treated newborn, teenagers and adults of all ages. The majority of clients I currently see have back, shoulder and neck pain and discomfort or just generally feel

out of alignment and lack energy.”

“The number of sessions needed to address the issue is variable on how long the condition has been present. For something acute, often one or two sessions will resolve it.

Chronic conditions may require three to eight sessions.”

The setting for Linda’s clinic also perfectly compliments the service she strives to provide.

“I am fortunate to work in a setting that utilises the tranquility of both the bush and stream that surround my “Phi Massage” clinic at Whale Bay.” Linda offers massage therapy and also reflexology, but currently postural balance/alignment and pregnancy bodywork are her passion and the focus of her studies.
