Winter Wisdom Making decisions is a tricky matter, people easily assume that you will stick to your word. Personally I feel that changing my mind is a sign of flexibility. Just this morning, because it was cold and grey, winter seemed to have arrived.

I began to think it was time to tuck myself away in the Hilda Ross retirement village with its central heating. But not only the friendly reminder of Raglan but also the love of the sea reminded me of their warm love.

So I’m still here and planning for survival through the winter. Still,

Waikato creative arts win Council support Waikato District Council has committed more than $30,000 to support creative arts projects and events in the district this year including the Raglan Film Festival, wearable arts events in Huntly and Raglan, and classes in a range of creative arts in Ngaruawahia and Raglan.

The Huntly Wearable Arts show in October and the Raglan Art to Wear Awards in June also won support with $5,454.16 granted to Let’s Get Together Huntly (operating under the Waikato Enterprise Agency) and $3,239 granted to the Raglan Community Arts Council’s ‘Raglan Art to Wear’ team.

Art to Wear rolls out the red carpet for new event

Wear is holding a glamorous cocktail-

style red carpet event this year, at the Old School Arts Centre, with live streaming, for those who miss out on tickets to the live show.

Katy Armstrong, who is organising the “cocktail-style, red carpet event” (adopted from the theme Scarlet Fever in the live show), says for the last Art to Wear in 2014, the tickets sold out in 28 minutes.

The Town Hall has limited seating, says Katy, “so, we knew we had to offer greater access.

“We looked at all sorts of options… we settled on a live feed. And yes, we are making this into its own event.”

Guests will be encouraged to dress up for the occasion, which will be filmed by a local video collective, and a free glass of bubbles and nibbles will be provided to all.

“For some people it’s all about the live event but when we’ve told people about this alternative they’ve got very excited.

“It’s a chance to open up the event to the community and offer something new.”

The categories for this year’s Art to Wear, the sixth biennial event, are Middle Earth, Scarlet Fever, Time Travel, Where the Wild Things Are and On the Rebound.

Katy says there will be entries by seasoned participants but also by people who have never entered before.

“We welcome new people.

“It is primarily a Raglan event but we have had some out-of-town participants.”

Katy says the show is popular because it “captures the hearts and imaginations of a truly creative community”.

“It’s an event that fires the imaginations of souls young and old; Raglan is a very creative place. Plus, the recycling aspect goes to the very heart of who we are as a community.”

Tickets to Art to Wear cost $20 for both the live show and the red carpet affair, and go on sale on Saturday, May 23.

Charge for the use of boat ramps, charge for the use of water to clean boats, charge for parking, charge a tax on camping, accommodation, goods and services, and even charge for the right to surf New Zealand’s famous left-hand break were some of the ideas put forward by the 25 people who turned up to the supper room of the town hall to discuss the issues of, and find solutions to, Raglan’s ever-increasing popularity.

At the beginning of the workshop, Waikato District Councillor Clint Baddeley told those who attended that the primary concern of the community to accommodate increasing numbers of visitors was the need for more infrastructure, which would come at a cost to ratepayers – the majority of who would not benefit from the business that tourism brings.

“As your councillor I want to minimise those costs.”

Mr Baddeley said Auckland’s drift south and Hamilton’s drift north, along with the building of the Waikato Expressway, would only see more visitors to Raglan in the future.

“We want to knock on council’s door to address the (visitor) issues of what they call (Waikato’s) ‘jewel in the crown’.”

The issues raised at the workshop, and which were brainstormed in groups, included: a strain on the current

infrastructure, including Raglan’s struggling sewage system; the amount of rubbish being left in the streets and on the beaches; extra pressure on volunteer emergency services; not enough parking; competition for resources, such as waves and space; a negative impact on the marine environment; and a loss of Raglan’s identity.

Community board member Kelly Clarkson, who spoke on behalf of one of the groups, said the quality of experience was greatly reduced when a space had to be shared with many people. She used surfing as an example.

Ms Clarkson said her group looked at what was happening in Papua New Guinea as a possible solution, where limits had been placed on the number of surfers at surf breaks, and surfers were charged a fee which went back to the community to help pay for infrastructure and services.

It was noted that similar limits were put on the number of people permitted on popular tracks in New Zealand’s national parks to avoid overcrowding and prevent environmental damage.

Community board member Lisa Thomson said there was a lot of pressure on the community to deal with the impacts of visitor growth, and not enough focus on “the social side of the community”.

Ms Thomson, who spoke on behalf of one of the groups, said there was lost opportunity for residents because of rising costs in Raglan, including buying a house or setting up a business.

She said her group looked at ways to get money from visitors to help pay for

community costs, including charging boaties $20 a day to use the boat ramp, putting a charge on services and accommodation, and even creating a policy where the sale of alcohol goes through a trust.

It was suggested that payments for use of the boat ramps or water at the boat ramps could be put towards volunteer services such as coastguard, while traffic congestion in the main street could be resolved with parking meters, which would encourage visitors to park in the side streets.

It was also argued that Raglan shouldn’t be expected to keep providing infrastructure and services for visitors.

“We can’t keep producing things for people to come. Tough, if there is no room then they can leave. No more car parks then go home,” said one Raglan resident.

“Town needs to be brave enough and say we are overloaded, that’s it.

“We are working out where more can be rather than put a stop to it.”

Raglan Community Board chairman Alan Vink said his view was that visitors did not have a problem with Raglan’s popularity.

“It’s the locals who are struggling with the excess in town.

“Tourists don’t have a problem with it.”

The community board will now prioritise the issues addressed at the meeting and continue discussions at its monthly meeting, with an aim to take the community’s concerns to the Waikato District Council.

t’s more than a decade since Rob

servicing “half the cars in Raglan”, but on their Hamilton lifestyle block these days life’s still as much about motor vehicles as anything else.

And the avid hot rodders wouldn’t have it any other way.

When they made the move to their three acres over the divvy -- from Whale Bay where they’d lived for 25 years -the couple built not only a house but also a 200-square metre shed so Rob could indulge his passion for working on vintage, resto and classic cars.

The car nut from way back now has a “very low key” working day with more like one or two customers on the go at a time instead of the forecourt full of cars that awaited attention most days at Bow Street Motors, he laughs.

The couple built up Bow Street Motors from 1984, having arrived in town from Hamilton with their young family in tow a few years earlier. “We set out to do 20 years,” Rob says of the business, which was formerly known as Raglan Central Garage.

They were busy years with Lyla working as accounts manager and receptionist while Rob, who’d done his apprenticeship in Hamilton, tended to the mechanical side of things and took on local staff as needed.

But all the while Rob was slowly putting together the 1935 Ford Coupe in which the pair now enjoy travelling about the country.

It took 15 years to build the hot rod in his spare time, he reckons, as he squeezed the labour of love in between family life, surfing and a burgeoning business. He started the project from the garage of his home in Whale Bay, but finished it off at Bow Street Motors’ workshop at weekends.

Rob and Lyla are now both active members of Hamilton’s ‘Riverside Rodders’ and Rob is also currently the club’s president. “We go to swap meets and hot rod runs all over the country,” says Lyla of their shared passion.

When the Chronicle caught up with the pair they’d recently returned from two

weeks’ touring in the South Island. “We drove down along with seven other cars from our club,” says Lyla of the road trip whose ultimate destination was the Pre 49 Nationals at Omarama in Central Otago.

It’s a passion which can also take them overseas, and two years ago they were part of a hot rod group which toured parts of the United States including a memorable stint on the famed Route 66, described as “the main street of America”.

The couple -- married as teens 47 years ago but now grandparents in their 60s -still work, although Rob describes himself as semi retired and is happy just “cruising along”. He’s taking his time currently, he says, turning a custom truck into a hot rod for a customer.

“Yeah these jobs take a while,” Lyla chips in lightheartedly of the venture, which has already been a year or two on the go.

Lyla works four days a week as an admin assistant at LJ Hooker in Hamilton.

After leaving Raglan she commuted and did similar work for about nine years at Raglan Real Estate Ray White, directly across the road from her old stomping ground.

The couple still have friends in town, but admit they don’t get back here as much as they’d like. And the surf’s not been the drawcard it once was after Rob hit the

rocks and injured his left shoulder muscles some time ago. “It stopped him being able to paddle,” Lyla explains.

Rob grew up in the Raglan district, on a Te Hutewai Road farm. From there he went to the old school in Stewart Street, then on to the district high -- now Raglan Area School -- in Norrie Avenue, where coincidentally his own two children were also later educated.

Rob and Lyla’s move over the diivvy came after married daughter Caroline “got crook” more than 13 years ago. By shifting nearer to Caroline in Hamilton, they could help her husband with the care of their toddler Deveraux.

“You never know what’s around the corner,” says Lyla of the circumstances which dramatically changed all their lives.

While Caroline died of the cancer and her husband eventually moved away from the Waikato, Rob and Lyla still regularly see their now 15-year-old grandson. And there are other “grandies” around too to delight in the lifestyle block with its sheep, hens, cows and garden.

Living on Hamilton’s doorstep also has some practical advantages for Rob’s work: it’s so much easier, for example, being able to “pick up parts close by” for his hot rod projects.

KASM prepares for second legal battle against seabed mining company K

presented by Galbraiths, was played out in small waves of less than 1.0m and offshore winds at Manu Bay, the ocean providing just enough swell for the event to be completed.

Open Men’s winner Maz Quinn came up trumps in the final posting a 13.77 point total, the same as double-finalist Elliot Paerata – Reid (Piha). However, Quinn, by way of his highest scoring ride of a 6.93, took the win over Paerata – Reid.

The win extends Quinn’s considerable lead on the New Zealand Pro Series after placing third at the National Championships and second at the South Island Championships so far this year.

“They were not the ideal conditions for me today with waves being that small” said Quinn. “I was disheartened at the forecast but it goes to show that if you keep at your game, you can win anything” he added.

“It was Billy’s to win but any time you get to beat Billy on the Point is good, he was ripping hard all weekend but I got two mediocre scores and held on with the countback which is as close as it gets. I thought Elliot’s last one was going to be better or get him the win but yeah, I am happy to take it away.”

Double finalist Paerata - Reid had to settle for second in the final, a career best result in the Open Men’s Division. However, the young Piha surfer was clearly dejected with coming so close to claiming a double, a feat not achieved at the event since 2009 by fellow finalist Billy Stairmand (Rag).

Quinn thought the conditions had gifted Stairmand the win today but the ocean did not play its part for the local surfer. Stairmand got stuck with the highest scoring wave of the final and only a small back up ride to finish with a 12.83 point heat total and third place overall.

Placing fourth in the final was another Raglan surfer in Chris Malone who finished on 11.33 points.

Kasm spokesperson Phil McCabe says the community-based action group will need to fundraise about $50,000 to ensure it can put up a good fight.

“We have to stand up stronger than last time or they walk away with it.

“We have got to stay vigilant with it. If we go half-arsed into another battle we will lose it.”

TTR has a mining permit for approximately 65 square kilometres of the South Taranaki Bight and it intends to reapply to the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) for resource consent to extract iron sand from the area.

In 2014, the Environment Protection Agency rejected TTR’s application for consent, a decision that Kasm fought hard for, and TTR subsequently withdrew its appeal.

Mr McCabe says Kasm spent about $35,000 fighting the previous application, with “some very kind rates” from lawyers, experts and scientists.

In June, Kasm will hold its first fundraising venture for the second round against TTR. A garage sale will be held at 16 Gilmour St, in Raglan, and members of the community have been asked to donate items for the sale.

Mr McCabe says TTR has yet to lodge its application, and he had initially been told it would happen by mid-February, then by mid-March and then by mid-April, but “we have to be ready”.

“They seem to be dragging their heels a bit,” he says, wary that TTR may be waiting for a change in legislation that would allow the Environment Minister to appoint decision-makers, rather than the EPA. Submissions on the Resource Legislation Amendment Bill, which proposes an appointment of boards of inquiry by the minister not the EPA, closed on March 14.

“Obviously they can try and make it look unbiased,” he says regarding a governmentappointed board, “but invariably this government wants to see seabed mining; it is a bit scary, they can do it for sure.”

Mr McCabe says TTR’s new application will be exactly the same as the old one but with some different computer modelling done and an outcome that will show more jobs and more money for people.

“They have to balance out the negative environmental impacts with positive economic outcomes.

“They will show that the impacts will be less and the benefits will be more, but it is inherently the same proposal.”

Mr McCabe says once the application has been lodged “we will be campaigning pretty hard out” to raise awareness of the impacts of seabed mining, encouraging people to make submissions against TTR’s proposal, and continuing fundraising for the legal and scientific costs of the hearing. * The Kasm garage sale will be held on June 5 at 16 Gilmour St. Donated items for the sale can be dropped off in the week before the sale. Tribe commemorates 150th anniversary of warrior chief’s death

A

tribal commemoration will be held next week at Papahua Reserve, Raglan Domain, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the death of Māori chief Wiremu Neera Te Awaitaia, a warrior who became one of the best friends of the Europeans.

Te Awaitaia, who was born about 1796 into the Waikato tribe of Ngāti Mahanga, at Waipa, died in Raglan on April 27, 1866, struck down by an influenza epidemic.

He is buried at Papahua, near the boat ramp in Raglan Domain, where the commemoration will be held on Wednesday morning.

His death notice in the Evening Post, dated May 7, 1866, said William Naylor (as Te Awaitaia was known to Pākehā) had been in Kawhia at the arrival of the governor, Sir George Grey, when he had “taken ill with the fever”. “He was brought to Raglan by men of his tribe, on a stretcher, and attended to by Dr Harsant and the surgeon of HMS Eclipse,” the death notice said. “But medical skill was unavailing and the poor old man died on the 27th of April.”

The death notice described Te Awaitaia as one of the oldest and best friends of the Europeans.

“He was an illustrious man amongst the great warrior chiefs of old New Zealand, who have now nearly all passed away.”

Te Awaitaia was a warrior in his youth.

He was active in battle, many of them led by his kinsman, Potatau Te Wherowhero.

In retaliation for the killing of a Waikato chief’s daughter, Te Awaitaia led a war party that drove out the Ngāti Koata from their lands near Whaingaroa (Raglan) Harbour, taking possession of their territory.

He was very skilful with the taiaha (traditional Maori weapon), according to history accounts, and gained mana by the axeing to death of Ngāti Tama chief Te Raparapa, who was renowned for his great strength.

According to the Evening Post death notice, Te Awaitaia was present at the storming of the Pukerangiora pā by the Waikatos.

“It is related that, after saving the women and children, 340 prisoners were led out before Te Wherowhero, who killed two hundred of them with a hatchet. He was at length wearied with the labour of killing, and the skin came off his hand. Te Awaitaia then came forward and killed the rest.”

However, Te Awaitaia’s warring ways ended with his conversion to Christianity.

“A good many of his people went into the war, but he kept aloof and was several times

employed as ambassador,” said the death notice.

In the Raglan museum, it is written: “Throughout the Waikato conflicts he remained loyal to the Queen giving protection to the settlers in his rohe. (No settlers were ever attacked within Ngāti Mahanga area.)”

Te Awaitaia also spoke out against the creation of a Māori King.

Baptised Wiremu Neera, or William Naylor, Te Awaitaia invited the missionaries to Whaingaroa, where he built the first church.

It was said that Te Awaitaia had nine wives, of which he had to renounce eight in order to become a member of the church.

“When the missionaries came, Te Awaitaia became a teacher, and made a preaching tour into Taranaki, and then to Taupo and the Waipa,” the death notice said.

Te Awaitaia signed the Treaty of Waitangi at Port Waikato on April 11, 1840.

He was eager to sell land to Pākehā to attract trade for the benefit of his people, but later regretted that the white man was not as hospitable, according to Ngāti Mahanga.

The location of Te Awaitaia’s house in the Raglan redoubt is now the car park for the Waikato District Council Raglan office, in Wi Neera St. Governor Sir George Grey travelled overland for two days to attend the tangi of Te Awaitaia.

irst observed in 1916, ANZAC Day – 25 April

as honouring returned servicemen and women, their families and also the communities who still remember the sacrifice those service personnel made.

It is also a day to remember current New Zealand Defence personnel serving in some far away land away from their families and friends.

The date itself marks the anniversary of the landing of New Zealand and Australian soldiers – the Anzacs – on the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915, 101 years ago.

Thousands lost their lives in the Gallipoli Campaign: 87,000 Turks, 44,000 men from France and the British Empire including 8,500 Australian and 2,779 New Zealanders, may they all rest in peace.

The Raglan Returned and Services Association (RSA) again plans to commemorate this solemn day with a parade that will march to the cenotaph on Bow Street at 11.00am. Form up for the parade will commence around 10.30am and all service personnel and ex-service personnel are welcome to join in.

There will be many guests and dignitaries in location including Barbara Kuriger (MP for Taranaki/ King Country), Clint Baddeley (District Council

Representative), Alan Vink (Community Board Representative), and Roger Gallagher (Raglan Arts Council).

The service will be officiated by our Kaumatua Sean Ellison and Minister Kathleen Gavin. Wreaths will be laid at the cenotaph by a variety of local organisations and speeches will be conducted by the head boy and head girl from Raglan Area School.

161 Battery personnel will also be in attendance, having the freedom of the city. They will provide a catafalque guard, a flag orderly and will march in the ANZAC Parade.

The Master of Ceremonies will be Saen O’Brien, the new RSA President. Saen is a retired NZ Army Major with 27 years service including operational service in Angola, East Timor and Cambodia.

Recited on ANZAC Day is verse 4 of a poem written by Robert Laurence Binyon, often referred to as “Binyons Lines” or more properly “For the Fallen.”

Within the RSA this is referred to as The ODE. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn At the going down of the sun, and in the morning We will remember them.

Raglan Club Anzac Open Day Once again the Raglan Club Inc will open its doors to the community on Anzac day following the service at the cenotaph in Bow Street.

Club Manager Chris Lourie says the club looks forward to hosting the community.

"Once the parade breaks rank we'll be underway with what has been a tradition in the town."

Along with this the club will provide afternoon tea for guests, and the winning students for the annual Raglan Club sponsored Anzac essay competition will be awarded their $1000 scholarships (to support the cost of their secondary education) at 1pm. Commemorative art works help us to remember

W

hile Kapiti Coast painter and sculptor Matt Gauldie has been putting considerable time into producing a unique series of six limited edition WW1 themed small bronze sculptures his connection to matters military runs much deeper.

For a period spanning eleven years, from 2005, Matt had rank of Honorary Captain at the NZ Army and then Defence Force official artist.

“It was a case of being in the right place at the right time. The Chief of Army was keen to see the role of official artist reinvigorated and I seized the opportunity and felt honoured when it was offered to me,” Matt says.

So at the age of 27 he joined the army at an age he describes as ‘just right’ – still able to thrive in the culture of army life. He describes the experience as a ‘reinvention of self’, providing fresh purpose and direction to his life and art.

“I discovered a whole side of me I didn’t know existed yet I think of my own family through the generations, all with the exception of my father have had

connections with the army, it is no wonder I was drawn to service life.”

Living and working as a full-time artist he says held him in good stead for army life.

“Creating art demands huge timemanagement capabilities and mental strength. Ask any artist what a fight and struggle it is to do all the soul searching and the mental tricks you have to deal with.

Art is definitely ‘front-line’.”

Matt volunteered to go through as a regular force soldier, starting with a three month training stint at Waiouru. He says this decision was important to him; adding integrity to his role as official artist.

‘Gunner Gauldie’ was subsequently promoted to Honorary Captain creating an exhibition about recruit training before being deployed to serve in Afghanistan, the Solomon Islands and east Timor. The Solomon Islands was, for the keen soldier, a real wake up call.

Pioneering the new role of Army Artist was something of a ‘trail-blazing’ experience he remembers.

“There were a number of different key roles, including doing exhibitions in the community. It was very important to

ensure that what I was depicting on canvas were realistic expressions of the NZ Army culture and that was one of the reasons why I joined the army.”

Matt says the works he created gave opportunity for the Army to engage with the public in ways that weren’t focussed around recruitment but rather in a more emotional forum.

Matt has recently created six WW1 commemorative bronze statuettes; each one depicting an iconic and powerful theme in direct connection with the events over a century ago.

‘Henderson and his Donkey’ is Matt’s interpretation of famous WW1 war artist Sapper Moore-Jones revered image of Simpson and his Donkey. Instead of Simpson, Matt chose to depict WW1 NZ medic Henderson.

“Sapper is my favourite WW1 army artist. He was one of a handful of New Zealanders on the front lines producing art.”

Henderson and his Donkey is not Matt’s only work relating to MooreJones. In 2015 he completed a 6 metre statue depicting the artist drawing on Gallipoli Peninsula which stands proudly in Hamilton’s main street.

‘Hongi’, represents two soldiers from the New Zealand Expeditionary Force’s Native Contingent. The soldiers are in costumised uniforms, common during the summer months at Gallipoli.

Matt remembers seeing two Maori soldiers in east Timor greeting each other in this same way in 2009.

“This hongi/karakia scene would have been a common sight at Gallipoli as the Maori soldiers were preparing to move to the front.”

Another piece titled ‘Charge’ is a depiction of a young NZ infantryman charging forward across no-mans-land.

The bronze is available with two different hat styles; a NZ ‘lemon squeezer’ hat or ‘pith’ helmet which was also issued to NZ soldiers in the campaign.

‘A Break in Battle/Contemplation’ has a limited edition of 50 and shows a battle

weary soldier sitting on a supply crate on the beach.

“The beach often provided a break in battle for weary soldiers. I have also painted a few ‘thousand yard stare’ paintings of soldiers who have reachers a point of physical and emotional exhaustion,” says Matt.

Another statuette ‘War Horse’ is still to be made; a scaled down replication of a planned life-size War Horse memorial sculpture commissioned by the War Horse Commemorative Memorial Board which evolved out of the Waikato Equestrian Centre.

Matt says it was a pleasure to be selected for this commission based on a sentimental evocative and very realistic image he drew of a lone horse with head down sniffing a hat on the battle field. The statue will finally reside in Hamilton’s Memorial Park; a fitting tribute to the more than 10,000 horses from New Zealand that served in WW1.

“I used to spend a lot of time going out on the rounds with an Equine Vet visiting horse stables. The idea for the gesture of the horse for the memorial came from me observing horses sniffing around the Vets bag. I hope the sculpture will highlight the sensitivity and the consciousness of the bond between soldier and horse.”

A seventh a final miniature bronze to complete the series will be unveiled before ANZAC day 2016.

War horses honoured at Memorial Park Hamilton Those who saw Steven Spielberg’s movie War Horse depicting the often barbaric conditions horses were subjected to during World War One would have also seen the immense bond that grew between the two and four legged soldiers.

In all, more than 10,000 horses were acquired by the army off farms all over New Zealand and sent to fight on the battlefields scattered over vast tracks of Europe and Africa. Of that staggering number only four horses, Bess, Doll, Beauty and Nigger returned to resume life in New Zealand when the war ended. A memorial to Bess in the form of a stone cairn outside Bulls is as far as known the only standing memorial to a War Horse in New Zealand at this time.

Track forward to three years ago and through a series of events a group of keen equestrians connected with Waikato Combined Equestrian Centre (WEC) have set about rectifying this situation by instigating a War Horse Memorial Sculpture project to be unveiled at Hamilton’s Memorial Park.

Spokesperson for the War Horse Commemorative Memorial Board which was formed to spearhead the project and WEC Patron Noeline Jeffries says the planned life-size War Horse sculpture to be made by former Army and NZDF official artist Matt Gauldie will be a fitting and timely tribute.

“When we researched and found out that the stone cairn memorial to Bess was the only one specifically commemorating a War Horse in New Zealand we were inspired to try to do something about this. It also seemed especially appropriate given the Waikato’s deep and long-standing history as the centre of the horse breeding industry of this country,” Noeline says.

“We invited several artists to interpret in drawing what they felt to be the sentiment, feel and gesture of a life-size horse that would be worthy of the memory of the brave War Horses of WW1 and when we saw the drawing Matt produced everyone felt he had perfectly depicted just what the relationship between a soldier and his horse would have been like.”

The talented painter and sculptor made two marquettes (miniature sculptures) depicting possible options. The Board selected the riderless, fully kitted horse, with head bent down as if to retrieve a soldiers hat on the battlefield.

“We were drawn to this image because it told a story straight off. Something had happened to the soldier and this gesture of the horse sniffing the hat was very true to life.”

Noeline can’t speak highly enough of Matt Gauldie’s innate ability to capture perfectly the look and feel of a horse in battle conditions. These weren’t thoroughbreds but rather stock horses used up and down the country as working farm labour units.

“Stocky station bred horses were what the Army of the day wanted as they were good doers. You can imagine the impact it would have had for farmers to have lost their work-horses and to try to continue farming all those years ago. While they were paid for the horses in no way was the real loss compensated,” says Noeline.

So far fundraising has been tracking well to reach the expected target of $245,000.

Grants have been applied for to WEL Trust, Trust Waikato and Lotteries. Many personal donations have also been received.

“That’s one of the very special parts of this wonderful project that so many people are drawn to want to donate towards seeing the magnificent sculpture realised.”

2013 marked the bicentennial of horses in New Zealand and for the Waikato, Equine Capital of New Zealand as Margaret describes it, to be honouring the War Horse at this time of centennial commemoration of WW1 in a memorial garden near the Waikato River is perfect.

Approval of the site, just south of Memorial Park’s Ypres Gardens within stone’s throw of the Cenotaph, has been granted by Council.

“Everyone who has worked and donated toward this project is inspired to think that very soon generations of children to come will be able to gaze upon and climb over this fine tribute to all those horses who served our country so well,” says Noeline.

The sculpture is set to be unveiled in time for Armistice Day 2018.

Repco new addition to Raglan Engineering hub

S

ituated on a piece of land that has a lot of local history, over the years Raglan Engineering has developed into a mechanical hub and is now adding a mini Repco store and a small motor servicing area to their list of offerings.

While the Repco store will carry nowhere near the range that city stores provide, the product range has been specifically tailored for the Raglan Market.

“I was nervous as hell when I was about to take everything over but everything worked out and over the last 14 years I’ve had many great tenants,” says Peter.

The recent relocation of Raglan-based Aeronavics saw a space open up at Park Drive for a new venture.

“It’s something that was talked about for a long time but up to six weeks ago we had nowhere to put it,” says Peter on the addition of the mini Repco and small motor servicing side of the business.

For the past few years, Aeronavics who have relocated their main offices to a different site in Te Uku - were leasing the shed space and with their departure a decision had to be made: “find a new tenant or use the vacant space for ourselves.”

After a few meeting and inquiries, it was decided that a retail space would be put in with a mini Repco reseller store as well as a separate space for servicing small

Repco new addition to Raglan Engineering hub

S

ituated on a piece of land that has a lot of local history, over the years Raglan Engineering has developed into a mechanical hub and is now adding a mini Repco store and a small motor servicing area to their list of offerings.

motors such as lawn mowers, chainsaws, weedeaters and ride-ons (small motor service area set to open early 2015).

While the Repco store will carry nowhere near the range that city stores provide, the product range has been specifically tailored for the Raglan Market.

From servicing vehicles to engineering supplies and services like welding and grinding to providing the farming community with tractor 3-point linkage accessories, Peter’s hope is that Raglan Engineering can now provide a wide-range of mechanical and engineering services to the community.

With some changes and developments afoot, next year will mark Peter’s 40th year working at 2 Park Drive and can say that the business is now a bit of a family affair.

Peter’s son Matt is helping out again in the workshop after an 18-month stint in Canada and with eight years experience working for Beaurepaires in Melbourne he has plenty of his own experience under his belt.

Matt’s older brother Stephen, who lives in Auckland, also helps out putting his management degree to good use assisting Peter with the finer details of procedures, stock control and general running systems.

“Many thanks to them,” says Peter as he looks ahead to the next step for Raglan Engineering.

RAGLAN CLUB ANZAC Essay Competition

It comes down upon me with a crushing weight that make me want to shrink into the smallest corners of my mind, but even from that I can hide from the darkness and self pity creeping up into my entire being.

Bombs land and shrapnel flies, my ears ring from the constant screams and banging that fill the air. My tears spill making a trail through the gore and dried blood that seems to be everywhere, as I think of my past life and what I could have done with it.

It’s like hell has landed, turning the once beautiful poppy field into a place of horror despair and death.
