Geoff: If 1080 is so safe we could drop in all the parks and playgrounds around Wellington! Think how much we would save in pest control every year. ...Oh hang on it’s not safe it is a dangerous chemical that is lethal to everything it touches. So remind me again why we allow it to dropped into our rivers and forests! Maybe we could use those sentenced to community detention to go and trap these pests and also perhaps the long term unemployed could spend a couple of days a month out walking in the bush and checking trap lines. Lastly couldn’t we further develop a market for the skins of these pests. Any thing is better than dropping poison indiscriminately in our forests.

NZ First has recently launched a project calling for a moratorium on the aerial use of 1080 in NZ. 1080 can be a polarising topic. On the one hand 1080 is essential to keep the pest population down, on the other hand it is highly toxic, banned in a number of countries and aerial drops can be harmful to other wildlife.

What is your opinion on 1080 use in NZ and do you think there are alternative options… ?

Jake: I understand the fear in 1080 but I know firsthand that DOC has done their homework on this one, and there isn’t a better alternative. Trying to take away NZ’s best line of defence against predators would just be selfish.

Kelly: Unfortunately I have not done enough research to offer up a fully formed opinion. Of the readings I have done and conversations I have had, I can see both sides. But it still doesn’t feel right to drop any form of chemical or concentrated substance into the incredibly complex environmental system and expect it all to be ok. Humans have a tendency to use first and ask questions later (especially when looking at chemical use), and so a moratorium suggested

by NZ First is a good way to counter that. Perhaps it could be met half way, in areas inaccessible by humans air drops of 1080 continue, and areas which can be managed by humans, are (whilst exploring the economic benefits of expanding the possum industry).

“We all of us need to set the standard in our community,” Inspector Hassan said of cooperation between police and the public.

“It’s about reinforcing good behaviour, not putting up with bad behaviour.”

A greater police presence this year could be expected from the week before Christmas, coinciding with the start of the school holidays, she said.

“We will be policing to demand from you the community.”

The Raglan Community Patrol has a new vehicle to use for its patrols around the streets of Raglan.

The organisation has managed to obtain a better car – a little silver Nissan – after doing some fundraising and getting the help of sponsors such as Jim Wright Nissan, the

Gallagher Group, the Raglan Club and WEL Network.

The car is now out on the streets of Raglan sporting the Community Patrol NZ logo and its blue and white stripes.

Top police brass flagged their intentions at a public meeting they held last week at the area school in the wake of community concerns over unruly behaviour about town last summer.

Western Waikato Area Commander Naila Hassan told the gathering of 30-odd community representatives that police “will and can do better this summer to keep the community safe”.

“It’s about prevention,” she said referring to complaints of drinking and fighting in the streets during the last Christmas-New Year break. The town was not as orderly as it could’ve and should’ve been, she added, because of the volume of holidaymakers and “how we policed”.

“What happened last year is why we are here (now),” Inspector Hassan admitted.

Alongside her at the Tuesday night meeting were Senior Constable Kevin McGartland of Raglan Police and Sergeant Neil Mouncher, the officer in charge of Raglan and Ngaruawahia policing.

Inspector Hassan said she personally would be working in Raglan during the critical period because “I want to see it (the situation) for myself”.

“But we cannot police alone,” she insisted. “We need you too … the support of the community.”

She referred to the community as “capable guardians” who needed to report incidents like bad driving for instance so police could act accordingly. Road policing and family violence were important areas of crime prevention, she said, urging residents

to be watchful.

There would be lower police tolerance to both unregistered cars in town and to breaches of the liquor ban over the holiday period, she told the meeting. “A lot of bad behaviour is around alcohol.”

Inspector Hassan has also requested a “demand picture” of Raglan for last summer so that trouble-spots can be identified and staff allocated to help prevent volatile situations erupting this time round.

“We will expand that police presence,” she promised, adding that numbers had to be based on evidence from last summer.

“We are here for you and to keep everyone safe.”

Councillor Clint Baddeley welcomed the opportunity to improve the ChristmasNew Year situation, and thanked Inspector Hassan for “giving us the confidence” in better policing. “The community will support you,” he reassured the police.

Those at the meeting discussed other concerns with the police around community responsibility in keeping the town safe.

Police assured the public they would work with Waikato District Council as well as directly with local supermarket and bar managers in seeing that people adhered to the liquor laws.

Ocean View Bed & Breakfast owner Amanda Cron also mentioned family responsibility in terms of supervising teenagers’ drinking habits. “There’s an attitude here that it (underage drinking) is easy to get away with.”

Inspector Hassan agreed “we need to put some responsibility back on parents”.

Signage around the annual liquor ban was also deemed “inadequate” at the meeting, its small size and high positioning making it hard to notice.

“We all care about our community and we want to be of assistance to the police,” Narina says.

The local group has been operating for 13 years and currently has about 17 active members, mostly retired people, but is keen to have new, younger members too.

Members have to undergo police checks and meet strict criteria before being selected.

Then they have to do an in-depth training programme, where patrol members are taught that their job is to observe and never get directly involved in anything they see while on patrol.

“We are the eyes and ears for the police and we report to the police any [suspicious] activities,” she says.

Members have to document everything they observe and pass on their information to police about “things that don’t seem right”. The police sometimes call upon them to do special patrols too.

New Raglan policeman Duncan Bourke says the community patrol is an invaluable part of the rural police team and their patrols help prevent crime.

“Rural policing is a challenging environment so the more eyes and ears we have will help keep the community safer.”

Constable Bourke says in the short time he has been in Raglan, he has been impressed at the way the community comes together, such as with the community patrol.

aglan professional surfer Billy Stairmand has notched up a second place in a surf contest that will go down in history books as the world’s first stadium surfing event.

The Red Bull Unleashed competition was held at the wave garden at Surf Snowdonia in North Wales this month. Hawaiian Albee Layer beat Billy 3-1 in the final in front of a 2000-strong audience in the purpose-built viewing stadium by the lagoon.

It was a unique location and a unique competition concept, whereby two surfers went head-to-head in a best-of-five waves contest.

Surfing NZ spokesperson Ben Kennings says wave gardens used to be popular in the 1980s but then fell out of favour. The one at Snowdonia was the first commercial wave garden and was designed in Spain.

“These guys reckon they’ve got better technology to make better waves,” Ben says.

The wave garden makes for a controlled surfing environment where each wave is the same – about 1.5 to 2 metres high.

“The wave suits him [Billy] because being in a wave pool it’s not that big,” Ben says. “He’s so small he has an advantage over bigger guys.”

The second placing is “massive” for Billy, with lots of publicity around the event boosting the Raglan surfer’s profile and Billy proving himself against some very good surfers.

Billy is currently placed at 33 on the World Surf League men’s qualifying series, dropping eight places after a bad result at his last event in Portugal.

Ben says there are four qualifying events left on Billy’s calendar for this year and “he needs four big results”.

Peter Pan production a success A talented group of performers from Raglan’s Children Theatre School – Drama Trix, trod the boards of the Town Hall last weekend in their production of Peter Pan, and boy did they impress!

A captivated audience were enthralled by stand out performances from all of the 26 strong cast, who ranged from age six to 14 years.

Loved by young and old, audience member’s commented “how professional it was,” and that they were “blown away.”

Children after watching the show vocalised that “it was just like the movies.”

Artistic Director and teacher Ruth Hare says it was a very successful performance.

She says, they are already talking about what they will wow you with next year!

There’s Puawānanga (clematis) flowering in the forest, kowhai in the backyard and people are hearing Pipiwharauroa (shining cuckoo) – all traditional signs that summer’s heading our way – and it’s time to get planting!

There are plenty of benefits to growing even a little bit of your own food, all you need is seeds, soil and a couple of pots or a little plot.

The Whaingaroa Environment Centre has a volunteer run seed bank, to build a locally resilient food source, make gardening affordable and to share knowledge. Here are our top 5 reasons to grow your own food from seed:

It tastes better Back in the good ol’ days a huge variety of plant foods were grown. Most supermarket produce is grown in large mono-cultural plots and now only a few varieties of each crop are selected, often for their ability to withstand commercial processes like picking, long storage and transport.

The seedbank holds a range of Heirloom seeds, old varieties that have been grown for many generations for qualities like taste, nutritional value, yield and long growing season. Ever tasted purple carrots, black basil or blue beans?

Then there are genetically modified seeds, instead of crossing different but related plants, companies splice genes from different biological kingdoms, like bacteria with a plant. For example, Monsanto has crossed genetic material from a bacteria known as Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) with corn. The goal was to create a pest-resistant plant. This means that any pests attempting to eat the corn plant will die since the pesticide is part of every cell of the plant (although pests are already showing resistance). The resultant GMO plant, known as Bt Corn, is actually registered as a pesticide…. delicious! About 90% of India’s cotton is based on Bt cotton seed; Monsanto are the dominant suppliers of those seeds. There are many concerns that we don’t fully know what the effects of messing with plants will have, especially if they cross pollinate and contaminate non GMO plants. All you need is healthy soil and healthy seeds to stick it to the man!
