Less funding support for Christmas in the Park The Raglan Community Board has approved funds this year for Christmas in the Park, which this year stars Stan Walker, but told organiser Surfside Church that it preferred the use of local bands for the biennial event.

Norris Peart, of Surfside Church, asked the community board for $3,500 plus GST towards the event at Te Kopua Domain, which was the same amount it was given in 2013.

But the board approved funds of $3000 plus GST instead, with chairman Alan Vink telling Norris that the community board supported local bands playing at Christmas in Park.

This year, the cost of Christmas in the Park is significantly higher – $35,000 – due to getting Stan Walker in from Australia to sing.

Councillor Clint Baddeley moved that the community board give $2000 plus GST, noting that the church had significant funds in its bank, and that the community board had other projects coming up that it would be contributing to.

mortgage was due and salaries had to be paid, and that the church put a lot of time and money back into the community, particularly through the Raglan Foodbank.

Boyd Turongo Dixon said there was a lot of local talent in Raglan, but acknowledged that Stan Walker would be an awesome show.

He said if the community board could afford it then it should give more than $2000, and it was amended that the board should give $3000 towards the event.

Norris said Christmas in the Park was a community event, not a free Stan Walker concert for the rest of the country.

The community board also approved $1775 plus GST to pay for the float prizes in Raglan’s New Year’s parade, which is run by the Lions Club.

However, Clint asked Bob MacLeod, of the Lions, if the organisation could step up its advertising of the event and get more people taking part in it.

New Vodafone tower to bring better network coverage in rural areas

The new 30-metre tower, which is being built on private land on Matakotea Rd, is part of the Rural Broadband Initiative.

The Te Uku site will provide high-speed wireless broadband and increased mobile coverage to approximately 500 addresses and will have 2G, 3G and 4G (L700) services available.

Currently the Raglan RBI site delivers super-fast 4G connectivity to well over 600 addresses.

Brawl in town Karioi Trail 2015 looms ‘unacceptable’ This year’s Raglan Karioi Trail, trail on the Swan farm will again be which involves running twice held for children aged 7-9 years and behaviour by locals to the summit of Mount Karioi, 10-12 years.

A woman was arrested on Saturday night after a huge brawl erupted in town as the Yot Club was closing.

Senior Constable Kevin McGartland says he was the only police officer on duty when the fight, involving about 50-60 people, broke out about 1.30am. He had to call the fire brigade to help him control the situation.

He says one Raglan woman, 39, was arrested for disorderly behaviour and damaging a police car. She will appear in court when damage to the car has been assessed.

“There would have been more arrests if we had been able to (make them) at the time.”

He says the fight was between local residents and some out-of-towners.

“There were locals who were trying to stop it but there were also locals who were trying to carry it on.

“With the summer coming on, and with alcohol being drunk and that, police have concerns about the start of the silly season, and this kind of behaviour is unacceptable for a local community.”

In a couple of weeks time on December 12, challengers will compete in the steepest 24km race (of its length) in New Zealand. The race will start and finish on the Swan farm on the Ruapuke side of the mountain and runners will have to contend with bush, mud, roots, rocks, climbing chains and ladders and some gravel road along the way.

“It’s a big challenge. It’s hard,” Organiser Francois Mazet concedes.

“That’s why you need quite a bit of training.”

There are several options for the 24km race, including running solo or in a 2-person team relay, with different age divisions and male and female categories. A 2km mini-Karioi

He is expecting the winners of the first race for the past two years - Kovo Kowaleski in the women’s division and Chris Morrissey in the men’s - to compete again this year, along with some other good runners from Raglan and around New Zealand.

Vodafone says connectivity and access to high-speed broadband has become a critical tool for people in rural areas.

“The Te Uku site will ensure residents and businesses have access to reliable information and communications, can connect to their communities and can engage online in the same way as their urban counterparts.”

Vodafone community relations manager Cailtin Metz says the towers are expensive but “the most effective way of getting broadband to rural people”, who are often out of reach of Vodafone’s mobile network due to their isolation and rugged terrain.

Lifeguard likely sparked rescue A search for a swimmer in trouble in the surf in Raglan on Tuesday was called after four hours.

Senior Constable Kevin McGartland says the person who had called 111 about a swimmer in trouble had probably seen a lifeguard who was out training in the rough sea.

He says the French lifeguard had told police afterwards that he was out swimming some hundreds of metres offshore from the tower and that he had been going underwater as part of his training.

The Gallagher Rescue boat, two jetskis, the Westpac Rescue helicopter and three inflatable rescue boats from Trust Waikato Raglan Surf Life Saving Club had searched the sea between the bar and Whale Bay from about midday to 4pm.

McGartland says the caller did the right thing by informing the police.

GOD IS REAL!

As a traumatised child I was constantly asking, “Why?” Why did my family disintegrate? Why was my mother always in hospital? Why did my father leave his family to serve in the Army? Why did friends and family I trusted betray and belittle me?

I loved being in the presence of my gentle, gracious Christian grandmother. I was in awe and amazed at the stories she shared aboutJesus.

However, growing up in South Auckland in a dysfunctional family Jesus was just an imaginary figure to me. At fifteen, I was abused. Feeling betrayed I became a recluse. My father was worried and introduced me to a Christian group in Auckland.

I turned to the Lord for help but did not understand the relationship I could enjoy with Jesus.

Eventually I left the group and moved to Australia. Disillusioned I chose to live life in the fast lane. After years of physical, mental, emotional and sexual abuse I didn’t care how I lived or what anyone thought of me. Spiralling downwards I saw demons and death. I hit rock bottom in what

HERE’S MY STORY

“We’ve always loved Raglan, and to be able to live here is fabulous,” Sarah enthuses. It’s been a favourite holiday spot for years, say these keen Kiwi horsewomen, the main attraction being the beach where they love to ride.

It was three years ago now – while on one of their holidays here – that the pair bought the 11-acre property, which includes an acre of protected native forest.

But it’s only this year, since returning from a stint living in Australia, they’ve got stuck in and developed the property to meet the needs of their venture.

Waitetuna locals have watched with interest if not downright friendliness, they say of their efforts to establish on the property a “therapy herd” on which the health of both horses and humans rests.

Two of the six horses – their riding horses – were trucked from Queensland where Sue and Sarah lived, and shipped across the Tasman, while they’ve acquired others they call rescue horses which are recovering from bad treatment such as abandonment or starvation.

Working with and rehabilitating horses as they do means these animals become sensitive to people and therefore very useful in human therapy, explains Sue who’s qualified in equine-assisted counselling through the Equine Psychotherapy Institute in Victoria, Australia.

She counsels clients who may choose to work with the horses as part of their therapy. “You don’t have to be a horsey person to work with them,” she points out.

It’s not about actually riding the horses; rather that those seeking solace might find their presence a comfort, in much the same way as dogs and cats are sometimes used in therapy.

Sue likens this kind of therapy to that of New Zealand’s charitable Riding for the Disabled organisation which has provided an opportunity for and encouraged confidence in its disabled riders over many years.

“Some of our best teachers are horses,” Sue insists. People are drawn to a horse with a particular background, and horses are drawn to people with specific issues

Sue and Sarah have seen a client who was dealing with boundary issues, for instance, nudged quite forcefully by a horse literally getting in their space. This type of situation “provides a metaphor to be explored” between practitioner and client, they say.

In such a case Sue might set up an experiential learning situation to help the client make a move to get the horse out of the way. “If they can do it with a horse – establish confidence – they learn to be more assertive with people.”

But there are a few arms to the “business banner” when it comes to the holistic healing of horse and human, Sarah reveals. Sue for instance is also an equine touch practitioner – she qualified through the Equine Touch Foundation in Australia – specialising in hands-on body work to help relieve muscle injury and strain, along with hoof trimming for horses throughout the Waikato.

The pair were in fact busy with that line of the business only last Saturday, spending hours trimming hooves in Cambridge.

Healthy hooves are vital to the wellbeing of the whole horse, they insist. As part of that, Sue travels and runs successful clinics in various areas for horse-owners to learn to do the job themselves.

Sarah’s “handy with the horses” too, Sue adds, but her forte is the business acumen she brings to Earthhorse Aotearoa.

“And she pays the bills,” Sue quips.

Because while Sue’s been sloshing around in mud every day doing the farm work,

Sarah has to work to “keep the horses in clover”, they laugh.

Trained as a classical singer, she’s a booking agent – with the unlikely job of arranging gigs for pop musicians – in Auckland, where she shares a flat from Monday to Friday. Then it’s back to Waitetuna each weekend to help Sue with the farm work and ride on the beach.

The pair sometimes take their two miniature horses to the beach too, where they walk them on leads like dogs. The minis, as they call them, offer another alternative in equine-assisted counselling because they’re not as intimidating to some people as are the larger horses.

Like Sarah, Sue also has a musical background. She’s had a professional career both as a classical musician and an academic, where she trained students over several decades. Now she teaches classical guitar one day a week at the Old School in Stewart Street, and is also about to play at a local café.

The pair were not about to divulge their respective ages to the Chronicle, but reckon they’re young at heart. “Neither of us has grown up yet,” adds Sarah.

And while for now they’re in rented accommodation in nearby Cogswell Road – all they have on site are a shipping container and a counselling hut – the dream is definitely to “build on this land” they’ve invested in.

It may be early days but they’re in no doubt that their unusual venture will be a success. “We’ve a lot of life experience between us, we’ve been around the traps.”

He was there. I was a mess. My mother and late younger brother were now born again Christians and showed me how to have a close friendship with Jesus. I went to their church where I was baptised in water and in the Holy Spirit. That was the beginning of my intimate relationship with Jesus. Now He heals me and guides me and is always with me giving me His peace in the storms of life. His presence is the most treasured gift I have.

Since giving my heart to Jesus I have found my Whakapapa, become a school teacher, studied law, found the answers to my childhood “why’s”, and travelled to places I would never have imagined, including the very places where Jesus lived, died and rose again. Raglan sculptor exhibits in New York show sculptor Richard Page prefers R aglan to let his work speak for itself.

And that’s exactly how a New York gallery

found him: they saw his work online and invited him to show some of his pieces in their Persistence of Form exhibition featuring 15 artists from around the world.

The Agora Gallery is a contemporary fine art gallery in the heart of New York’s art district of Chelsea, which promotes national and international artists and connects artists with collectors.

Gallery assistant Nikki Fraser discovered Richard through his website. “What really stood out for me in Richard’s sculptures is how smooth and precise the lines are.”

Richard sculpts from a work site in Te Ahiawa. A number of his completed works sit on plinths in a grassy clearing surrounded by native plantings from which swing any number of raucous tui. Most of his sculptures are covered in bird shit.

“Christened by nature,” he says.

A small creek babbles past.

Our meeting was arranged around the tide: he was thinking of going whitebaiting or for a kitesurf. “I’ve been bent over a piece now for a week. Sore back!”

Richard is quite frank that he would rather not talk about himself.

“It’s all online, on my website,” he says, about his work.

Well, yes, but there must be more! Some nice stories perhaps?

“I don’t do nice,” he says. Fair enough. Nice isn’t for everyone.

He works in basalt, volcanic rock sourced from Raglan – gets it from “an extinct quarry”.

He doesn’t want to talk about that, either.

But “it’s three times harder than marble”, he volunteers.

“I use it because I like torturing myself.”

It can take up to two months – 50 hours of work a week – to complete one of his sculptures.

His work is influenced by the sea and nature.

One sculpture in the throes of creation captures my eye. It’s a double helix and the dimensions look pretty much perfect.

How do you make it so exact?

“Maths. It’s called the golden section,” he says, and rattles off a number that has something to do with dimensions: 1.61803399. “Have you heard of it?” Um, no, can’t say I have.

Yet somehow that magic number enables him to pick up an angle grinder with a diamond disc attached, and cut out immaculate shapes from very hard rock.

“Grind, cut and polish.”

Sounds quite simple, really. But don’t be fooled. You can’t stick back on what you accidently cut off.

Another piece looks like a giant piece of black liquorice, the kind with a twist. “Try chewing it,” he replies.

It’s pitch black, apart from a bit of bird shit on it, and polished to a shine.

Next to it is another work, but the twist in this one is left rough, hewn. Grind, cut, no polish there.

The contrast of the raw texture with highly polished stone is a feature found in many of his pieces.

Richard was a builder before he began a sculpting apprenticeship in 1991 in Israel, taught by Yael Artsi.

“She. She’s a woman. She was trained in Paris and considered pretty up there.

“I ran out of money in London. I was on an OE and ran out of money in three weeks!”

So he ended up in a kibbutz where he worked and got fed. After six months he got the chance to work on his first stone.

“It was an old-fashioned apprenticeship, for 10 years.”

Ten years in a kibbutz! What was that like?

“It was warm.”

And it was more like six months a year, and he hasn’t been back since.

“The concept of a kibbutz has changed,” he says. They have diversified. It has changed to keep up with technology.

But he’s been back to Italy about five times to further his “studies” of working in monumental scales. Huge sculptures.

There he helps out Cynthia Sah and Nicolas Bertoux, who he met at a symposium in Denmark. He’s not required for his artistic endeavour, he reckons.

“It’s hard-core labour work. It’s more about the process, being able to replicate for them on a monumental scale.”

The biggest piece he has worked on with the pair is 12.5 metres: 120 tons of finished product.

“It was made in Italy and transported to Taiwan and reassembled.”

Creating in pieces is the only way you get to build to huge scales, he says.

Having been a builder by trade helps in some respects, he agrees, but it hinders in others.

“Building is square, sculpting is taking it to another dimension. A whole lot of flat lines make a circle. With building you never take it that far.”

He’s currently working on three pieces: two commissions and one spec, which is a piece he is making for himself with the hope of selling it in the future. They will take months to complete.

“Pay days are far and few apart.”

His four pieces for the New York exhibition, which begins on December 1 and runs for three weeks, are pieces that he exhibited in the Raglan and District Museum earlier this year.

The New York gallery also runs an online shop, ARTmine, on which he has eight pieces for sale. It includes the maquette version (scaled down version) of his sculpture at the entrance to Raglan Kopua Holiday Park.

“They found me online on the net. It was quite a process, thousands of emails, submitting pieces, waiting for them to choose.

“I learnt a lot.”

So no, there is no chance that they are flying him over for the exhibition’s opening.

Richard’s not keen on having his photograph taken, but reluctantly puts away his rolled cigarette and leans on one of his works in process for a quick snap.

“I prefer to stay under the radar,” he says.

“Let my work do the talking.”

The clouds over Karioi are looking dark and stormy, rain is possibly coming, and there are high winds forecast for later in the afternoon.

The window for whitebaiting is gone, but there is hope for a kitesurf yet.
