At the Town Hall, Mighty River Harmony, one of New Zealand’s top mens Barbershop Chorus’, will showcase pieces from their National Barbershop Competition, plus several pieces demonstrating the full range of possibilities within the barbershop genre.

This programme has just been recorded before an invited ‘live’ audience in Ruakura, Hamilton last week, and is planned for a preChristmas CD release.

Players compete in a ‘knock out’ competition and have the opportunity to play against each other on a week by week basis until only two players are left in the final of each division.

The senior mens competition is played over 36 holes. This year our two top ranked players squared off in the final. After 18 holes Silas Toornstra had a commanding three hole lead on Ken Shea then Ken took control of the match and had an outstanding run of seven birdies in 11 holes to take the match. Ken has now won the Senior Mens Championship competition for 10 years in a row. The club is lucky to have a player of his quality.

Thanks to all players who put their names forward and got involved in the competition this year and hope to see you all back next year. Have a safe and happy Christmas.

he rain kept a lid on numbers at this year’s Christmas in the Park with organisers estimating about 2000 people were in attendance.

Organiser the Surfside Church had been worried that the event’s star drawcard, Stan Walker, would lure the masses over the deviation for the community celebration, which was held on Sunday evening.

“The numbers were fine. I think the weather kept it to a nice number,” says Surfside Church pastor Roger Peart.

“There was a good vibe, we had good local support. We really appreciate the locals for coming out and braving it out, even though it wasn’t ideal weather conditions.”

But during Stan Walker’s set the showers stopped and all his young fans were jostling for a position right up the front.

Roger says Stan Walker, who sang his hit singles including Black Box and Aotearoa, also appeared to enjoy himself .

“He spent quite a bit of time with the kids afterwards. We were guarding him a bit because we didn’t want him to get mobbed, but afterwards, when it had thinned out a bit, he hung out with the kids, allowed selfies and gave autographs, interacted with the young people. He really went out of his way to spend a lot of time with them.

“He’s a Māori boy and he related to the locals, I think. He felt quite at home.

“He was easy-going, easy to work with.”

There was a shower of rain about half an hour before Stan Walker was due on stage so the star had suggested that perhaps he should go on earlier “because everyone was getting a bit wet and cold”.

“I think he was feeling a bit for the crowd.”

This year’s Christmas in the Park, which had copped a bit of criticism at the community board meeting in November because it was starring Stan Walker and the board preferred local acts, also had performances by school students, hulahooper Vicki Crosby, Raglan musician Reiki Ruawai, Raglan band The Family Band and Hamilton band Sir Brown.

“They were all locals acts except for Stan Walker, and he was originally a local boy, from the Waikato, and Sir Brown … but they spend a lot of time in Raglan surfing any way.”

Roger says this year’s celebration was possibly one of the easiest the church has put on.

“Everyone stepped up, because we knew it potentially could be a bit bigger.”

He says there were up to 100 helpers from the church and a lot of community support.

Boutique accommodation owner Barry Ashby hosted Stan Walker free of charge at Journey’s End, The Wharf Kitchen and Bar provided meals for free for Stan Walker and his crew, Gun Lai put on an “amazing

fireworks display” that would have cost many times what he charged, and Chris Field of Rotor Work flew in Santa in his helicopter – although Santa’s lolly scramble from a great height raised a few eyebrows, but thankfully didn’t take out any eyes.

“We had so much support from the locals,” says Roger. “And all our costs are pretty much covered, we are not out of pocket,” he says of the $35,000 event.

Raglan resident Tish Taylor, whose son, Lenny, played bass in The Family Band, says Stan Walker possibly saved the event.

“If he hadn’t been there everyone probably would have gone home (because of the rain).”

She says Stan Walker’s performance was good to look at and listen to.

“It was very well choreographed.

“All the kids were really loving it. The kids didn’t seem bothered by the rain at all, “I think they (the organisers) did a really good job.”

Turanga Kereopa, who was down from Auckland to see family and friends, said the weather was really bad when Stan Walker started his set and he was about to leave because he was soaking wet.

“He had the crowd up on their feet in the rain, it was incredible. His voice is pretty amazing.”

But after a couple of songs the weather cleared, and a good time was had by all.

Message from Surfside Church Earlier in the year when one of our team jokingly suggested we should invite Stan Walker as our guest artist to this years Christmas in the Park I said “Why not ask him?” Much to our surprise he said “yes”.

Then began the process of working out the logistics of how to make it all come together.

The reality is that without the support of so many right across the community we simply couldn’t have done it.

We ended up with over 50 businesses and community groups supporting this years event in so many different ways. First of all Waikato Scaffolders provided the stage, Rotor Work Ltd flew Santa in as our local Māori wardens directed traffic in and out and Gun Lai provided a fireworks display to

conclude the evening. Our major financial sponsors were Bow St Depot, Gallagher Foundation, Summer Glow Apiaries, Trillion Trust and the Raglan Community Board (WDC).

next stage of water meter installation is complete.

While residents already have water manifolds installed, Waikato District Council Service Delivery General Manager Tim Harty said meters will be fitted to the existing meter boxes over the next couple of months.

“We have already connected about 1600 water manifolds in Raglan and the next stage of installing the meters means residents will be able to monitor their household water usage,” he said.

Council will not be charging for water in Raglan until July 2017 but residents can expect to receive three statements over the next 18-months, prior to us billing.

“This will show household water usage and costs so you know what to expect when Council begins charging,” Mr Harty said.

Information on how to read meters will be distributed to homes during the installation phase for the meters. Residents can also expect to receive smart water tips in their mailboxes at the same time.

“It is important to remember that water is a limited and precious resource. We are

encouraging people throughout the district to conserve water as much as possible throughout summer. We are currently at Water Alert level one,” Mr Harty said.

Water Alert level one means residents can use sprinklers from 6am-8am, 6pm-8pm and hand-held hosing can be done any time.

“I don’t think there’s any doubt that this service is critical to our wider community and that it needs to be funded in a co-ordinated way. We shouldn’t have an organisation that relies heavily on volunteers to save people’s lives coming to us absolutely desperate just weeks before Christmas.”

Mylchreest said he would be pushing for a far more co-ordinated approach to the issue well before the next summer season and said this would be supported by the Waikato Mayoral Forum.

“That’s something we’ll need to sort out.

In the meantime, we just need to get on and do something and $10,000 is at least a start.”

Mylchreest committed $10,000 today following a desperate request for more funds from Surf Life Saving Northern Region. The organisation is facing a $41,000 shortfall to provide lifeguard cover at Ngarunui Beach at Raglan and Sunset Beach at Port Waikato this summer.

Last year Raglan lifesavers dealt with 177 incidents or rescues with another 68 recorded at Sunset Beach. Already there has been one drowning at Ngarunui beach. It’s feared that, without paid life guards on patrol during the week, more lives will be at risk.

Mylchreest said his council recognised many Waipa residents used the west coast beaches and that Waipa needed to do its part.

He was also aware of volunteer lifeguards from Waipa who regularly patrolled at Raglan in the weekends when no paid guards were on duty.

Mylchreest has urged other local councils to take decisive action, fast, to make up the remaining funding shortfall. Waikato District Council and Waikato Regional Council already contribute to the surf lifesaving service.

The money from Waipa would allow weekday life-guards to patrol for two extra weeks, he said.

The Raglan House has been involved in various initiatives to raise awareness, through education but this year we have largely concentrated on working with Raglan licensees in the formation of an alcohol forum.

The forum provides a great opportunity for our licensees and other stakeholders to come together on a regular basis to discuss legislation or any issues that might exist.

The forum is attended by licensees and representatives from the Health Promotion Agency, community, Police and the Waikato District Council. As part of the forum work we have created an Alcohol Accord which was signed on 8th December 2015.

“Whilst there is nothing in this current accord that it outside the regulations contained in the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act, we see this as a first step

towards creating a shared commitment to the minimisation of harm from alcohol,” says Raglan House PR Manager Chrissy Hodkinson.

“Discussions will continue and in time other parameters around the sale and supply of alcohol may be agreed. Not all our licensees were able to attend the accord signing but the majority are involved in this forum and the accord and we are also in discussion with a couple of clubs who have also indicated interest in joining”.

Grant Cushman, Chair of The Raglan House signed the accord on behalf of the community and Councillor Clint Baddeley signed on behalf of the Waikato District Council. Grant, as a child, used to live in the Harbourview Hotel and noted that his father and grandfather operated an informal “accord” around alcohol.

“In those days of 6 o’clock closing, they had a system of taking car keys off patrons to make sure they didn’t drink to excess and then drive and also ensured that their patrons arrived home in a state where they could still milk the cows,” said Grant.

“They also had a very close relationship with the local policeman (Paddy Kelk) and doctor (Digger Penman). They would all be very happy to see the formalisation of these relationships through this Alcohol Accord.”

Rowers broaden horizon with Raglan club

Market stalwart Rick Thorpe mans his stand at the Creative Markets.

aglan’s bustling Creative Market – R which celebrates its 10th anniversary this Sunday – owes its existence to a casual conversation between two Robertson Road neighbours over a cup of coffee.

“The town reminded me of how Byron Bay used to be, but I wondered why there weren’t any kind of markets around when there were so many creative people here,” clothing designer Nadine Meddings recalls of the chat with her then-neighbour, artist Kim Garside.

So the two women got pro-active and in December 2005 Raglan’s first Creative Market was held, as it still is today, at the Old School in Stewart Street. Among the 25 or so stalls, Nadine had her ‘Ataahua’ kids’ wear on display, while Kim sold her paintings.

Nadine – who’d had some experience of Auckland’s popular Grey Lynn Park Festival – recalls having done lots of marketing the previous few months. That included erecting a billboard at the local water tower, and distributing fliers around town and beyond.

“We also had adverts in Art News, an article in Tempo (Waikato Times) and put listings on as many events websites as we could. And we got word out around the Titirangi, Aotea Square and Tamahere Markets for stallholders.”

Nadine remembers their first Creative Market as being “quite local” but with stallholders too from Pirongia, Hamilton and Titirangi. Stalls were set up in the Old School carpark, with a few out the back of the building.

Live music added to the festival flavour and created the kind of atmosphere Nadine had in mind from an earlier trip to Byron Bay, the northern NSW surfing town so often likened to Raglan.

“We tried to put an emphasis on creativity and having a variety (of products),” Nadine explains, although the market’s evolved now into more food than clothing stalls. That’s especially so since the opening up of the Old School kitchen, which has kick-started a few local businesses like Raglan Pie Co which is still going strong.

Co-ordinators have changed over the decade, but the market has been managed since 2007 by Raglan Community Arts Council and fully integrated into the Old School events calendar.

Arts centre facilitator Jacqueline Anderson says the monthly event has grown steadily – with more than 70 stalls now booked for this Sunday – while remaining true to its original goal of promoting local makers and producers. “Part shopping experience, part social event, the gathering is always hugely popular with locals and tourists alike.”

Many stallholders have come and gone over the years, she adds, but a few faces from the early days are still around like Rick and Liz of Taunga Kereru with their homemade pesto and Lin Van Craenenbroeck of Moz-Art with her colourful handcrafted clothing.

Belgian-born Lin, who then lived just up the road from the Old School, reckons she started “very small” by selling some mosaics and the bread pudding she made from her grandmother’s recipe.

Now she’s got a huge array of “mosaic-style” wearable art, made from her home in Government Road and sold also at other markets to which she regularly travels.

Yannis and Monika of Ocean Inlays Jewellery have also relied on the Creative Market and other markets for business over the past nine years. They work on contemporary designs from their home studio in Te Mata and particularly like the local event. “It’s got a good feeling,” Monika told the Chronicle, even though it is unpredictable in terms of monthly sales.

Nadine may now have her own boutique shop – Atamira – downtown and Kim a studio in Chartwell, but the Creative Market continues to attract new stallholders. Whale Bay artist Miranda Jane Caird, who started selling her work there only recently, says she is well supported by locals and likes the opportunity market days offer for “immediate feedback”.

Sunday’s anniversary event promises to be bigger and better than ever featuring entertainment from Hamilton jazz band Art Gecko, sack and hula hoop races, stallholder giveaways, a birthday cake, a treasure hunt, coconut bowling and a visit from Santa.

Three Raglan men have started the Raglan Rowing Club and are looking for experienced rowers to get out on the water during the weekends. And for those who don’t know a scull from a sweep there will be a “have a go” session if there is enough interest.

The club, started by Hamilton Rowing club members Tony Oosten, Shaun Stuart-Jones and Danny Farr, had its first day out on the harbour on November 29.

They roped in a very nervous Stuart Francis, who is retired and hadn’t rowed since he was at high school. It was a successful outing – they didn’t flip.

Tony, Stuart and Danny are competitive rowers, and the club has been set up so they can do some weekend training. During the week they train on the Waikato River before work.

The trio has their eye on the World Masters Games in 2017, to be held in New Zealand at Lake Karapiro.

“It’s nice to row on a big expanse of water rather then looking out for trees and banks and other users,” says Tony, who started rowing with a Vancouver Island club, in Canada, about 16 years ago.

Shaun, who is a physiotherapist, started rowing about 10 years ago to understand the causes behind the aches and pains of his rowing patients.

Danny started rowing in a corporate team for Fonterra.

The new club has five boats: three doubles and two fours. They were destined for the scrap heap, but with a bit of maintenance they are now seaworthy.

They are old boats: old technology with canvas tops.

Great for training in but you wouldn’t want to race them, Tony and Shaun say. One was used at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.

It’s not too unusual to have a rowing club on a harbour, they say. There are clubs in Tauranga, Wellington and Auckland.

Swamping a boat will be the biggest issue in Raglan, Tony says, so they won’t be going out if there are white caps on the harbour and will have to keep an eye out for the wake of other boats. They are pretty easy to flip, too, if you don’t know what you are doing.

The boats are being kept at The Wharf Kitchen and Bar in exchange for some section maintenance, and it’s just a short walk to the boat ramp. The destination will be up-harbour rather than towards the bar.

Tony says the club will be a social affair, with perhaps a drink and a meal at The Wharf after an outing on the water.

“We shall look to see what the demand is, what people want to do, and make it up as we go along.”

Exhibition at the Old School: Kiwi and Cuban Ecological Images he intent of this international Tglobal poster project revolves around concerns.

The urgent need to protect our environment, as a way to preserve the human species, is fundamental to the way we educate and engage present and future generations. Visual Communication Design students of the Instituto Superior de Diseño in Havana, Cuba and students of the Bachelor of Mediarts of the Waikato Institute of Technology in Hamilton, and contexts, but they have in common the sensitivity to care for the environment and the certainity that something can be done to contribute to eco-educational awareness.

It is for this reason that students and tutors from both institutes have joined communication space for academic and cultural exchange on this topic.

This project was made possible within existing courses in the two institutions; where students environs, researched the issues and conceptualised and developed the poster designs.

The outcome of this experience is the joint exhibition of twenty posters that were part of the Forma 2015 VIII Congreso Internacional de Diseño “Diseño con Sentido” in Havana, Cuba (16-18 June 2015) and at Wintec in Hamilton. Playcentre Christmas Fundraiser e Akau Playcentre is running a T very festive fundraiser.

Whaingaroa Youth Movement: Outside In

Councillor’s Column Summer has been teasing us lately, one day it is like winter and the next is like we expect as a balmy day of summer.

I’ve had a number of people from our community raise concerns over what appears as an increase in violence and wilful damage plus a recent spat of burglaries, leaving them concerned as we head towards the holiday season.

As I said in my last column, we all have a responsibility to let our police know about these incidents so they can deal with it.

Our local police care about our community but they need our support.

Council because of a few peoples bad behaviours, have had to close our library’s and offices for one day to train staff in how to deal with bad behaviour, this is disappointing given staffs willingness to help everyone in our community.

I note there has been a lot of interest in the District Council Public Places By-Law review, which covers parking in town.

Parking has increasingly become a concern for a number of people particularly at this time of year.

Council and the Community Board are looking at ways to relieve the problem but once again because we are a popular destination we may have to look at our parking habits and consider parking a little further away and walking, when there is limited space.

Council has recently let a contract to improve some of our boat ramps which includes work on the Te Akau side of the harbour and the Puriri park foreshore and boat ramp in town , next year work will start on repairs to the Manu Bay boat ramp.

You would have also noticed that council has had a number of trees in the road reserve trimmed and tidied up.

Animal control will be showing more presence over the holiday season given the change to the Dog Policy By-Law allowing dogs on a leash in town, also expect to see the our traffic warden assisting with traffic management.

There are a number of events scheduled through the early part of summer including Soundsplash 2016.

I’m also aware that Xtreme Zero Waste are collaborating to provide a better rubbish collection through the summer with the assistance of our wonderful volunteers’.

It has been an extremely busy year at Council for my fellow Councillors and I and next year will be no different, it’s been a pleasure to work with a wide range of groups and individuals.

‘Outside In’ was a journey into the mind, memories and emotions, through dance. This is the work of 70 dancers aged between 5-18yrs exploring themes of joy, anger, disgust, fear, sadness and memories.

•30 hours per week We are looking for a House Manager at The Raglan House to run day to day operations. This is a management position based within The Raglan House and includes responsibility for the day to day operations, financial management, leading and coordinating the team to ensure effective service delivery and continued support of existing services to the Raglan Community.

The role also has strong liaison with the PR Manager to ensure the House is well represented in the wider community. The ability to develop strong relationships within the community and having an understanding of the social service sector and the current issues facing people and their family/whanau will be key to your success in this role. You’ll be in your element managing staff and volunteers and getting the best from the whole team.

Flexibility and strong communication will be key requirements along with proven management, financial and administration experience. Your management skills will help build a team that excels and provides real value to the community. You will have a proven understanding of, and commitment to, the Treaty of Waitangi. We’re looking for someone with drive, passion and the ability to think outside the square, who ‘thrives on challenges’ and can add value to our organisation.
