Council rocks the boat with its choice to market wharf shops A wave of disbelief has met Waikato District Council’s decision to appoint a Hamilton real estate agent to try WR ÂżOO WKH WRZQÂśV QHZ DQG VWLOO YHU\ empty-looking wharf building. Critics say they cannot fathom why a Lodge commercial property specialist has been given the job over Raglan realtors to market the building for lease. And their concern has been heightened by rumours doing the rounds – after a claim made at last week’s Raglan Community Board meeting – that potential lessees have been told no-one could come out to show them around the $1.9 million building and that they should look in the windows. The issue came up in the public forum preceding the community board meeting, where Raglan Community House co- ordinator Chrissy Hodkinson asked simply “Why Lodge?â€? Raglan ward councillor Clint Baddeley referred to the matter being an “operationalâ€? issue – in other words one handled by council staff based in Ngaruawahia – but board chairman Rodger Gallagher’s response was less diplomatic. “It’s another example of council disengaging from the community,â€? he complained. Chrissy told the Chronicle she raised the issue because “it struck me as kind of oddâ€? that Lodge were doing the marketing. She said the council needed reminding there were agents here who could handle the work instead.

Chamber members go in search of Hobbiton While Frodo and Bilbo were not in residence at the time of the their visit, the Raglan Chamber of Commerce members had a wonderful visit to the Hobbiton movie set in Matamata recently. Hobbiton is expected to rapidly become the number one tourist destination in New =HDODQG RQFH 3HWHU -DFNVRQœV ¿OP WKH Hobbit, comes out in December. As Tourism New Zealand points out, when local operators can engage with tourists about places to visit in their area, it gives the tourist a much richer and deeper experience of their time here. This trip was organised as a familiarisation tour with 30 Chamber members taking advantage of the opportunity. The tour was followed by a great barbecue meal at the Shire’s Rest, a converted wool shed. On site there is also the Hobbiton gift shop, complete with authentic Hobbit and LOTR jewellery. C h a m b e r members had a great time and the tour is highly r e c o m m e n d e d for Hobbit and non Hobbit fans alike. Stephanie Philp

The evening before the community board meeting, the same issue was discussed at a regular meeting of the Raglan Chamber of Commerce board. Chairwoman Stephanie Philp said board members couldn’t understand why the council did not use Raglan agents. “It doesn’t make any sense, no logical sense,â€? she said. “They should have gone with local people.â€? A chamber representative who subsequently went along to the community board meeting said she shared Chrissy’s concerns but was encouraged that Clint undertook to take the matter up with council. Meanwhile it’s understood Lodge have rung at least one Raglan real estate agency to ask if it would “conjunctâ€? with them in marketing the wharf leases, and that the agency is now obliged to do so if there is interest from potential commercial tenants. Vacant CBD shops soon thing of past? Marketing the Raglan wharf leases may prove a challenge but there’s a mood of positivity now in the Raglan CBD, with one commercial landlord optimistic that town retail premises will soon be “pretty well fullâ€?. He told the Chronicle he believed the uptown bakery could reopen under new management as early as next month and a new restaurant in the old Zaragoza premises by October. There was also interest in the former Splurge shop on Bow Street, and the reletting of the old Raglan Information Centre premises around the corner in Wainui Road was close to a “done dealâ€?. Super Sports do it again Raglan Club Inc. has a proud record of achievement at the annual Whangamata Club’s mixed sport tournament. By bringing home the trophy again this year, talented all-rounder Maureen Wahanga has won the pairs trophy three times in the last seven years. This year Thomas Lord, who works part-time at the club driving the courtesy van, partnered Maureen as they tackled 8 ball, indoor bowls and darts. “I wasn’t expecting to do so well at the indoor bowls part but I played better than expected and with Maureen’s skill level in all three events we were a strong combinationâ€?, says Thomas. Both plan to go back to Whangamata next year to defend their title.

“I really enjoy going to Whangamata and seeing the same players year after year. The competition is full-on so it was great to bring the trophy back to Raglan againâ€?, says Maureen who won the event in 2011 and in 2006. Sue Russell
