aglan-based podiatrist Janet Murphy is proud of the changes she helped bring about during a recent volunteering stint at a leprosy clinic in India.

Originally from Cork in Ireland, Janet spent three months earlier this year working at the Calcutta Rescue charity’s Chitpur Clinic in the vast and very poor Indian city of Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta), returning from her travels last month.

She first visited the leprosy clinic in 2000 as a newly qualified podiatrist during her travels, after reading about it at university and being inspired by the work of Calcutta Rescue founder Dr Jack Preger.

It was a ramshackle clinic at a truck stop on the edge of the Howrah River and at the time she felt ill equipped to offer much to the clinic. She was also hospitalised due to illness so she didn’t last long. “But it has been on my mind ever since.”

Fifteen years later, as a fully qualified podiatrist and with much experience in

diabetics and amputations behind her, Janet returned to the Chitpur Clinic as a podiatrist with very much to offer.

She provided cross-infection education at the clinic, training both staff and patients in basic hygiene practices, such as getting staff to change gloves and sterilise equipment between patients.

She also dressed horrific wounds on the feet and hands of patients, and even helped make sandals and shoes for their deformed feet.

“There was a big emphasis on responding to individual needs and responding to any suffering,” Janet says.

India is home to about half the world’s estimated 250,000 leprosy survivors. The disease, which can have a three to 30 year incubation period, is caused by a bacteria thought to be spread through nasal droplets and prolonged close contact with leprosy survivors.

are no longer infectious after a month’s treatment.

Janet says about 95 percent of the population is thought to have natural immunity to the bacteria and most people who contract leprosy have other risk factors such as a poor diet, polluted water or other immune-compromising health problems.

Leprosy causes irreversible nerve damage to the limbs, which leads to numbness, weakness and an inability to feel pain. This means patients can easily injure themselves, which can lead to the deformity and disability that are characteristic of the untreated disease. Untreated infections can also lead to death.

Janet says the deformities are often why leprosy survivors are ostracised from their communities and end up on the streets, with begging being the main way for lepers to earn a living.

“That is why this charity is so important, they get treated with dignity and like normal human beings.”

An integral part of care is helping meet social and financial needs as well, so barriers stopping patients getting treatment are overcome. The charity gives patients food and vitamins, cooking oil, money for transport and clothing, subsidies rent and funds walking sticks, wheelchairs and prosthetics.

Sometimes patients can be reluctant to have an amputation because they have a family to look after and they can’t afford the NZ$7 a day fee that hospitals charge in India - the leprosy hospital in Kolkata being preferred over the Indian public hospitals.

“If you have to go the public hospital, god forbid, there’s rats there, there’s faeces there, you may not get a bed – you have to bribe your way into a bed,” Janet explains.

Understandably, Chitpur Clinic patients are very grateful for help.

“There was an acknowledgement that without this service, they would have had no where else to turn. Most of the leprosy

As a woman in a male-dominated society and as the only foreigner at the clinic, she says her work was not “a walk in the park” and changes did not happen overnight, but she is pleased with what she achieved in her three months there.

She paid for a lot of equipment for the clinic herself, including an ultrasonic cleaner, and some stainless steel trolleys for the wound dressing stations, replacing rusty instruments and fixing the steriliser.

Janet knows other people from Raglan who have done charity work in India and says she has met a lot of inspiring people in India as well who are dedicating their lives to helping others.

“You hear a lot about Mother Teresa, but there’s a lot more people out there doing more amazing stuff and they never get any acknowledgement,” she says.

Janet hopes to return there at a later stage in her life, but is for now, happy to be reestablishing her life and career here.

next book about a series of New Zealand murder mysteries from the 1920s.

Scott says while the actual subject matter of his fifth book is still under wraps, the new book relates to a television project. Some of it relates to the unsolved murder cases from the 1920s and ‘30s that are in his third book, Shot In the Dark.

Based in Hamilton with wife and two children, Scott will take a couple of months off from his job at the New Zealand Transport Agency’s certification office and “the hullaballoo” of his life in Hamilton to write at his parent’s bach in Raglan.

He finds the town is a good place to gather his thoughts.

“As soon as you drive into Raglan you feel that peace,” he says.

Scott’s first two books, Without Trace and Still Missing, are about missing persons and his investigative work led to several cold cases being reopened. The books also inspired the TVNZ series, The Missing.

While in Raglan he is also keen to find out more about a local missing person case from the 1950s or 60s. All he knows is that it was quite a controversial case at the time and concerned a woman who disappeared from Raglan, possibly over property.

“The little bit I know, it sounded quite intriguing,” Scott says. “I like those older cases. It’s more open to getting that information, rather than more recent cases.”

It is a time-consuming business though, investigating

unsolved crimes, he says. But the older the crime, the easier it is to get material and the more willing people are to talk about the cases, as often those responsible are “well and truly dead” by then.

“Most of the cases I look at, particularly the older ones, I found with 99 percent of them, most of the people were very open,” he says. “ People were more willing to talk about the circumstances or the victim.”

He accesses old police files at Archives New Zealand, but with the paper in some of the old files being so flimsy and not able to be photocopied, he has to hand-write many of his notes.

He also travels the country talking to families of victims, witnesses and suspected perpetrators to gather his material, trying not to get anyone’s hopes up or get too emotionally involved himself.

“One of the first things I do is tell them not to get their hopes up.”

These families have usually accepted that their loved one is dead - many may even have an idea of who is responsible - but for most of them, the main concern is to get the body back.

His investigations are different from those of the police, and he can sometimes have more success because he is not from the constabulary: “People are reluctant to talk to the police because they’re police, whereas I’m coming from a different angle and people are more willing to open up.”

He has learned never to make assumptions about a case.

Sometimes missing people turn up years later or people fake their own deaths.

“Nothing surprises me – you never can predict what the outcome will be with a lot of the cases,” Scott explains.

Scott has always been fascinated in unsolved crime and missing person mysteries. He grew up in the 1970s, “the era of the motorised offender”, when women and girls started being abducted in cars – a marked change from the tranquil New Zealand of the 1960s when women could still hitchhike without fear.

“Back in the 1970s, a murder or an abduction made the news for weeks.”

As an adult he worked as a fraud investigator for several government departments, before doing a writing course and publishing his first missing person book, Without Trace in 2005.

He sometimes needs a break after completing a project: “It can be quite emotionally draining. You do get emotionally attached”.

But there are still a lot more cases out there to pique his interest.

“New Zealand has certainly more than enough missing person cases. There are certainly enough for another book or two,” Scott says.

Pet dental care

We know that to keep our mouths healthy we need to brush our teeth at least once a day and preferably floss as well.

Despite the differences between us and our furry friends, we share the same tooth structure and can develop the same tooth disorders, which include periodontal disease, tooth decay and dental fractures. However, our pets often don’t receive the same level of care for their teeth as we do.

Oral health status has a profound effect on the animal's general health. Infection and inflammation of the gums are caused by bacteria present in plaque and calculus (tartar).

The problem begins when plaque and calculus build up on a pet's teeth. Periodontal disease may cause bacteria and toxins to enter the bloodstream, with potentially harmful effects on internal organs. Conversely, poor systemic health may manifest in the oral cavity and can exacerbate periodontal disease. This means that if you think your animal has a mouth problem, the vet still needs to check the rest of your pet in case there is more to the problem.

To help prevent these problems from occurring you can regularly brush your pet’s teeth with a soft toothbrush and pet toothpaste. Diet is a major factor in the development of plaque. Soft or sticky foods should be avoided, while certain chewing toys are beneficial. A specially formulated diet with dental benefits is available for dogs.

Your animal will probably need a dental sometime in its life. Cats and dogs don’t sit still while we poke around their mouths! They can’t understand what we are doing and if they already have a painful tooth, then the whole procedure is quite stressful for them (and us)! This means that your pet will be under general anaesthesia during a dental procedure and won’t know what we are doing or feel any pain. The adverse effects of bad teeth on the overall health of the animal greatly outweigh any anaesthetic risk.

If you notice your pet has bad breath, altered behaviour such as chewing on one side of the mouth, dropping food, crying when yawning, not grooming themselves, acting “grumpy” or bleeding from the mouth, then contact your vet.

Support group for parents Fundraiser to tackle stray of children with extra needs problem

ocal animal lover Meisje Laboyrie Lstanding is helping tackle Raglan’s longproblem of stray cats.

“We remember what it felt like in the beginning. You feel alone. You find yourself comparing your situation to others,” said Charlotte.

“You are overwhelmed with appointments and specialists, and it can be difficult not having any other parents/caregivers to talk to who understand the challenges you are going through.”

There are a few families living within Raglan who have a child with special needs, whether it be physical, learning, or a combination, or even a chronic illness.

The two have been on their own journey with their daughters for a few years and hope to provide support and information they wish they had known at different stages.

They’re extending an open invitation to parents and caregivers with children who have extra needs–including grown up children, to an informal meet and greet to share stories, information and offer an understanding ear.

"We don’t necessarily know it all, but we can help those who are new to it start their journey. We don’t want anyone to feel like they are alone,” Charlotte said.

Anyone is welcome to attend and the group is open to all ages. If parents or caregivers are not at an early intervention stage, they can give feedback to those who are.

“Everyone is going through different stages,” said Rach. “Stage by stage there are so many different services. We hope to share the information that we have, and hope that others will do the same.”

The first meeting of the group will be held on Thursday 3rd September at 7:00PM at the Raglan Social Club. They hope to “form a community within the community”, by establishing who is living here and start helping each other find a common ground that all parents and families can relate to.

Meisje gathered donated goods from friends and businesses around Raglan that she put into a couple of hampers to raffle off, raising about $500 for the Raglan Vetinerary Clinic’s Stray Cat and Wildlife Fund.

Her aim is to help families who are struggling with the cost of de-sexing their cats, but who are contributing to the stray cat and unwanted kitten problem in the meantime.

“There’s always so many cats at the [Raglan] vets that have been dumped,” explains Meisje, who has two cats from a litter of five kittens that were dumped in a rubbish bin at Te Kopua Domain around New Year. “I think it’s disgusting.”

She has fundraised several times for the stray cat fund, as she knows how much unpaid, unacknowledged work the clinic does in the community with abandoned animals.

“I do it for the kids. I’m trying to bring my kids up to have compassion for animals,” Meisje says.

Raglan Vet head nurse Donna Rickard is well acquainted with the problem of cats that have not been desexed, having been the face of the local Cat Protection League for many years.

She has little patience for many New Zealanders’ view that it is their “god given right” to own a pet.

“A pet is a luxury and if you can’t afford it, then don’t get one,” she says quite simply.

Raglan’s large transient population was part of the problem. In many stray cat cases, people got a kitten at Christmas, then moved somewhere where they were not allowed pets and just left their pet behind.

Last year the Raglan Vet rehomed 150 stray cats and kittens, six dogs and three rabbits, sometimes catching the animals themselves.

The clinic, which is under the Anexa umbrella, provides cats for rehoming at the subsidised cost of $110 for female cats and $85 for male cats. These cats are de-sexed, vaccinated, micro-chipped, de-wormed and treated for fleas.

Donna suggests new pet owners put money into an account at the vet when they first get a pet, so they plan ahead for these normal costs associated with owning a pet.

The more cats that are de-sexed, the less stray cats and unwanted kittens there would be, she says.

The money Meisje raised has gone into a fund that will provide for a number of free de-sexing operations.

The clinic continues to help abandoned animals, with staff often volunteering their time and the clinic covering the cost of boarding stray animals and many surgeries along the way.

But Donna stresses that the clinic is not the SPCA. “People forget that we are a business and we are paying staff and we need to be seen to be making a profit,” Donna says.

“We have a lot of people who know about the work we do and come and donate all the time.”

Which heater where?

In the colder months up to a third of your electricity bill can be spent on heating. The Whaingaroa Environment Centre Warm Home Service team compare a few common heaters to help save you money and use our planet’s precious resources more wisely.

When choosing a heater it’s important to consider the size of the space you are heating. Portable electric heaters are most useful for quickly warming small rooms. In a modern insulated (non-draughty) home with low ceilings, a good small heater will warm the air to a comfortable level. If you have high ceilings a ceiling fan can help circulate heat back down.

If your house has poor insulation or is draughty then then any warm air, which has cost you to heat, will be escaping and you’ll have to keep the heater cranking. A Warm Home Assessment can help you to keep the sneaky heat in.

Fan heater

Cents per kW/h = 22-35 Small and portable. Heat by pushing warm air around the room. Good for quickly warming small insulated rooms.

Oil coloumn heater Radiant Heater

Cents per kW/h= 22-35 Heat the air around them and rely on air convection to move heat around the room.

Not great for rooms with high ceilings as heat will rise. Good for background heating of bedrooms and small living spaces.

Heat pump Cents per kW/h= 6-11 Very efficient and safe. Good for roomspecific heating andbackground heating for large spaces such as hallways. Good for getting more heat cost-effectively into under-heated Panel Heater homes.

Cents per kW/h=22-35 A form of convection heater constructed as thin panels and wall mounted. Typically low wattage and provide only minimal heat. Good for small, well insulated rooms.

Compost Time

Now’s a great time to buy bulk compost at Xtreme Zero Waste for your spring garden.

Compost can be loaded onto your trailer on the yard, or delivered to your home. $35 per cubic metre and delivery charges do apply. Bags of compost are also available at $10 for 30 litres of super food, or $8 for 40 litres of carbon compost.

While you’re up here why not grab some carpet or cardboard for keeping those weeds at bay. We also have plenty of wood and corrugated iron for making some raised dirty paper, weeds and lawn clippings. garden bed. No land space? Get your creative hats on and make some planter boxes. Don’t forget we take flax now for $10 per cubic metre, the same price for green-waste drop off.

LPG cabinet heater

Cents per kW/h=35-40 Most expensive type of heating. Burns LPG gas and doesn’t have a flue or chimney - so emissions from burning stay inside the house. Releases harmful nitrogen dioxide, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. These heaters are banned in some countries. Must be used with windows open. Consumer magazine recommends these are never used indoors.

Release large quantity of water vapour which adds to humidity, dampness and mould issues.

More than 75 percent of electricity in New Zealand comes from renewable resources (like hydropower) LPG is a non-renewable fuel, which adds greenhouse gases to the environment.

ANNUAL AGRICULTURAL DAYS APPROACHING. Agricultural days foster an interest in farming, as well as teaching the children the responsibility involved with the care and wellbeing of a pet. It also helps the children to develop an understanding of the importance of animal welfare issues such as feed, shelter, handling and health. Each year, each school in the Raglan District holds a local day and then all children from all four schools are encouraged to participate in Group Day. The dates for this year are below.
