Not much gives me the creeps. But when people talk about surgery in detail it makes me eugh.. Not images or movie scenes just if they describe something and the imagery that comes into my head it just isn’t pretty.

What two things would be on your desert island?

Is it cheating to say: A lovely little batch and an endless supply of yummy food!

I probably spend most of my time on Facebook or Instagram.

ichard and Alison Jeffcoat are looking forward to working for someone else and having their family life back after 17 years in the butchering business in Raglan.

The Jeffcoats recently sold their Raglan Topcut Butchery business to Hamiltonbased butcher Ricky Barham. The pair have also sold their house and relocated to Hamilton, but Richard will be staying on at the butchery till the end of the month with the new owner.

It will be a total change in lifestyle for the couple, who plans to firstly take a holiday and enjoy some quality time with their two teenagers, Ashleigh, 16, and 14-year-old Nicolas.

They might even be able to take their first family holiday at Christmas time, which was always their busy time at the shop.

“I’ve never had a Christmas that I haven’t had to worry about Christmas hams or how many precooked sausages I had,” Richard said.

Richard is planning to go see Nicolas play in a national under-15 rugby tournament in

Dunedin, and Alison is going to Samoa next month to watch Ashleigh compete in lawn bowls in the Youth Commonwealth Games.

After that, the couple plans to find nice, normal jobs with less stress and responsibility.

“Working 35 to 40 hours a week would be like semi-retirement after 25 years of butchering, with all the hours that are involved.”

Richard worked eight years in his father’s Frankton butchery before buying the Raglan butchery from Alison’s brother in 1998. So butchery was on both sides of the family, but particularly for Richard, whose father, grandfather and greatgrandfather have also been in the trade.

“I started working for Dad with no real idea of carrying it on. But then the passion took over. It’s in the blood,” he explained.

Ashleigh likes clean hands, but Nicolas was showing some talent for butchery: “He was dicing beef and tying sausages at the age of 13. I only showed him once and he got it straight away.”

Famous for its sausages, Topcut was

now producing more than 60 different flavoured varieties. Over the 17 years the Jeffcoats have owned the busy butchery, the variety, flavours and cuts of meat available have expanded considerably.

“There’s a bit of a passion now for people to cook with real meat and go to a shop and buy the meat they want, rather than go to a supermarket and buy a packet.”

Now the couple is pleased to be handing the business over into the capable hands of Ricky Barham, who is originally from Ngaruwahia and has been in the meat industry for 20 years. The Barham family also has a holiday house in Raglan.

The Jeffcoats’ other butcher, Jodie Ratima, who Richard said was “the best butcher I’ve ever known” would be staying on.

While Richard and Alison are looking forward to a less stressful life, they will miss some of the local Raglan colour.

“We’ve got heaps of neat customers, heaps of characters,” Richard said. “That’s what I’ll miss, is people sticking their heads in the door to give us a bit of banter.”

Closure of Bow St leaves few WOF choices Raglan car owners are getting a taste of the nationwide shortage of warranting mechanics, with the closure of Bow Street Motors leaving just one qualified mechanic in town able to complete the vehicle inspections.

Direct Tech’s Joel Connor, is currently the only qualified mechanic in Raglan able to do warrants of fitness (WOF), offering the service for the first time this week.

Joel said he has “tons of people” waiting to book in for WOFs, so he hopes to find someone to help him soon.

Bow Street Motors closed at the end of last month and its site at 20 Bow Street has been sold to an undisclosed buyer.

Raglan Service Station’s sole operator, John Hart, is on holiday until the end of October and Raglan Engineering has lost its

part-time WOF-accredited mechanic, former Bow Street Motors mechanic Ben Hill, this week.

“By coincidence Bow Street [Motors] closed and John Hart was away, so for a while there you couldn’t get a warrant done,” said Raglan Engineering owner Peter Williams.

Peter said New Zealand had a real shortage of qualified mechanics with the WOF accreditation. He had been “desperately looking” for such a person since January, spending a fortune on advertising.

“So Raglan finds itself in a situation which is really quite peculiar,” he said.

“There were at least three places that could do WOFs for many, many years.”

He has finally been able to secure a mechanic from South Africa for warrants at Raglan Engineering, but it would be at least three months until he was ready to do WOFs, once his qualifications had met New Zealand requirements.

“People are desperate for warrants.

I’m just really disappointed that I can’t do anything [about it],” Peter said.

Neither Peter nor Joel know the fate of the Bow Street Motors site under its new owners.

Peter, who was the last apprentice to be trained there in the 1970s, said Ben had accepted a job in Hamilton and another former Bow Street Motors mechanic, Andy, was “out of action” for at least four months after having a knee operation.

Former Bow Street Motors owner Gordon Radford could not be contacted for comment.

Ray White Raglan real estate agent Dave Hanna said the purchase of the Bow Street Motors property had not been settled yet and the potential owners are currently “keeping plans close to their chest” regarding the site.

Frank reckons the funniest callout he’s experienced was to a Dalmatian – coincidentally a breed often adopted as firehouse or brigade mascots – which they had to dig out of the sand-dunes at Kopua campground. The dog had been looking for rabbits when the sand caved in, burying it about one-and-a-half metres underground.

Then there was the cockatiel – high in one of Bow Street’s iconic Phoenix palms – that had to be hosed down. “They don’t like water,” Frank explains.

Frank rates the camaraderie of fellow fire-fighters as one of the best parts of the job. There have always been 24 volunteers in the brigade, including women in recent times. The sense of “giving something back to the community” has also played a part.

but Frank Turner reckons he can’t just “rock up” to fire callouts in his jandals and shorts any more. And certainly not since becoming deputy chief of the Raglan Volunteer Fire Brigade five or six years ago.

“You’ve got to be in full kit now, but in the old days there wasn’t much gear,” he laughs.

The stricter dress code’s just one change the born-and-bred local has seen since first volunteering for the Raglan fire service exactly 40 years and one week ago today.

Despite the decades however – and being the brigade’s longest-serving member – Frank insists it feels like yesterday he started out.

But there’ve been plenty of changes over the years all the same.

“Nowadays it’s harder to join,” the 62-year-old admits. “You’ve got to dot the i’s and cross the t’s … health and safety (regulations) are more difficult.”

It’s been a “sterling effort”, Kevin adds of his deputy’s 40 years of service. “It’s not easy dragging yourself out of bed to go to someone else’s aid in the middle of the night.”

riting for children is a very successful area of New Zealand publishing, so it was fitting that much of Raglan’s writing festival, Word Café Raglan, was dedicated to the art.

The three day festival last weekend hosted a range of established New Zealand writers including crime writer Scott Bainbridge, novelist James George, local writers Andre Ngapo and Kani Te Manukura and Hamiltonbased poet Michael Moore.

But it was the children’s writing that really shone during Word Café, with speakers ranging from young adult writer Mandy Hager and well-

known children’s writer Dawn McMillan to top selling children’s author Kat Merewether.

There was also a panel discussion with children’s illustrators, which included Deborah Hinde, known for her popular A Kiwi Night Before Christmas series, graphic novelist Paul Martin, and Kat, who illustrated her own bestseller, Kuwi’s First Egg. “They talked a lot about their work and their processes – how they build on sketches to get a finished product,” said one of the Word Café organisers, Emma Brooks. “Everyone got a lot out of it.”

aglan photographer Jwan Milek has been a bit of a gypsy, but says his new gallery on Wainui Road will settle him down a bit.

Milek Photogaphy’s new gallery opened recently, displaying Jwan’s iconic surfing and ocean shots along with a few other pieces of Raglan art.

Jwan has been going back and forth between his native Australia and Raglan for more than 40 years, while developing his career as a photographer and raising a family. But he kept coming back here.

“I love surfing left-hand breaks when I surf,” Jwan explained. “Raglan’s just like a magnet – it always drags me back.”

It was not only the surf and his love of ocean photography that brought him back. Both his two adult daughters – Kylie, owner of the Let’s Grow daycare centre, and Cheri, who helps in

the gallery - are currently based in Raglan.

Having a gallery was also on Jwan’s bucket list. “Now that I’ve got a gallery, that’s settled me down a bit,” he added.

But the plan was to not spend all his time in the gallery, but to do what he really loves, to get out and take new photos. “That’s what inspires me, just to get something different every time.”

Many of his photographs – most of which were of Raglan - go overseas to places such as Germany, Australia and the United States, and the online component of his business is growing.

“It doesn’t have to be Raglan [photos] that people buy, it’s just something that captures the eye. But most people want a picture of Raglan,” he said of his customers.

Jwan is also doing some commercial and fashion photography, weddings, portraits and other photography work, plus a bit of plastering during quiet times.

It was plastering that was his main source of income in Raglan when his children were young, as creative photography alone could not support the family.

He got “the photo addiction” at the age of about 20 in Wollongong, Australia when he got a job in a photo processing shop, and was free to use the shop’s equipment and darkroom.

“That’s what hooked me – seeing what would come up in the darkroom. I had to go out and take another picture so I could see what would come up.”

Later, while living in Raglan he did a photojournalist course in Hamilton and got a job with a professional photographer Bill Limberg, learning to do different types of photography.

“But I still wanted to come out to Raglan and take photos of the surfing and the ocean.

Ocean photography is my thing.”

He has always sold his work at markets and through local shops and will continue to do so.

Raglan’s established children’s writer, Sarah Johnson, said children’s writing was a “hugely successful” area of publishing in New Zealand.

Sarah launched her third book, The Bold Ship Phenomenal, at the festival on Saturday in front of a large crowd.

She also attracted a large audience of children and parents at the Raglan Library on the Sunday at a book reading, where she talked about the inspiration for her stories – one of which was an unusual wind-up musical “Cherry Bestle” bottle she got from a recycle centre.

“What writers do is they find things in the world and they turn them into stories,” she explained to the 50-odd children gathered.

Waitetuna’s Margery Fern also read The New Old Truck, which was one of the books in the highly acclaimed Tales From The Farm series written by her sister Jennifer Somervell and illustrated by Margery.

Dawn McMillan, who read her book Pancake Attack to the children, said there seemed to be a “huge energy” around writing for children. She got a lot of inspiration from the bush and sea near her Coromandel house, while some story ideas were just “gifts that materialise”.

Dawn is also the author of best-seller I Need A New Bum as well as about 25 other picture books and 180 educational books, said she loved every minute of Word Café and enjoyed meeting other children’s writers there.

The festival had a real local flavour, with many local writers speaking and Word Café sponsoring a writing competition, which attracted a lot of entries from local school

children [see list of winners below].

Word Café also hosted a discussion on self-publishing versus publishers, featuring self-publisher’s Kat Merewether and Raglan’s Latesha Randall and Pisey Leng with Beatnik Publishing’s Sally Greer.

Kat said self-publishing was not an easy route and required a lot of planning and hard work. She said many self-published books flopped because they were not well-edited and did not have a good marketing strategy, which was very important.

She suggested writers opt for a small print run at first and urged self-publishers to consider other things if choosing an offshore printing company, such as whether staff were paid a decent wage and materials were environmentally sustainable.

“If you’re going to go offshore [for printing], make an ethical choice. Don’t just go on cost,” Kat said.

Sally said Beatnik’s publishing skills lay in quality control and the design and packaging of a book, which could take ideas to the next level.

Beatnik is interested in authors who are committed to writing, not just to ticking off ‘publish a book’ on their bucket lists, and who were realistic about how much money they could make.

“You can dream big, but that [making millions] can’t be the motivation within New Zealand,” Sally said.

Emma said the writers seemed to enjoy the friendly atmosphere of the event and ticket sales were nearly tripled from the last Word Café two years ago, with the audiences having plenty of opportunities to meet guest speakers.

“I guess our aim is that it has quite a personal touch,” Emma said.

he typical ‘Western Diet’ of high high fat, highly processed foods, basically all the foods in the middle aisles of the supermarket, are low in dietary fibre.

Dietary fibre refers to the cell walls found in plants that are not digestible by humans and are passed through the gastro intestinal tract.

A low fibre is linked to diseases such as obesity, diabetes, diverticulitis, constipation, colon cancer, kidney stones, gall stones and auto immune diseases just to name a few.

Functions of fibre: • Binds with water as it passes through the colon and increases the size and softness of stools. This helps with both constipation and diarrhoea.

• Used to make short chain fatty acids (SCFA) which play important roles in gut function.

• Increases feelings of fullness by slowing the rate of food absorption.

• Lowers cholesterol • Maintains suitable bacterial flora, which is synonymous with good health.

We should eat around 10-13 grams of fibre for every 1000 calories consumed. For a typical adult diet of 2000 calories we should aim to eat 20-26grams of dietary fibre.

How to increase dietary fibre: • Eat whole grains instead of white processed grains and food.

• Include 2 dessert spoons of oat bran to your breakfast • Add LSA (ground linseed, sunflower seeds, almonds) or LSC (chia instead of almonds) to smoothies, cereals, baking or as a sprinkle on salads.

• Eat at least nine servings (2 cups) of fibre-filled fruit and vegetables each day, including apples, oranges, broccoli, berries, pears, peas, figs, carrots, and beans.

and I was looking at jobs elsewhere. I had a new share milking offer over the other side of Hamilton. I didn’t feel easy about leaving Raglan and my church so I prayed about it and declined the job. I am now a Bee Keeper in my family business. My parents nearly sold up the business before I asked for a job. I have now seen the business expand and go from strength to strength.

I see God every day through the places I go and see how the bees work. I have no idea how to make honey but God does. We own a steep, hill country manuka farm in Tahora, Taranaki. When I go there I ride my motorbike to the highest point at dawn. I see the sunrise over a thousand hills and see Mt Ruapehu to the east and Mt Taranaki to the west and think God is real, God is awesome!
