To the Editor, I am hopeful that there will be discussion at the next Community Board meeting on the idea of making Raglan central a skateboard and scooter friendly environment. If the idea is widened a bit to include cycles there may be a wider interest. We have favoured motor vehicles since they replaced horse and cart. There has been total absence of any form of thinking that is inclusive since then! It is a challenge that I put to you all. Examine your prejudices, put them aside for a bit as there are ways we can embrace the no petrol forms of mobility in our town. Has any thought of parking adjacent to the centre of the road been examined? Or lowering the speed of vehicles? Has any thought of making the roads so that pedestrians have the same rights to the road as vehicles? Has any thought been given to getting our skate boarders to teach us how best we can all use the roads and make them safer? Start asking questions from a youth perspective!

We funded these skate boards etc and expect our youth not to skate on the best surfaces. Let's give it a seasons trial.

Work begins on new early learning centre ,

Work begins: Pile-driving gets underway at the site of the new Lets Grow Early Learning Centre.

ile drivers at work near the turnoff to Ocean Beach have noisily announced the start of work on a new early learning centre for Raglan, but other than that it’s still “quiet time” for the longrumoured project.

The now Raglan-domiciled couple behind the 'Lets Grow Early Learning Centre' did not want to be identified last

week and were reluctant to say much more than that construction had finally begun after a two-year consent process, Luke Mathers was the builder and they were looking to open early next year.

They added they would provide the “finer details of the business” around October.

A sign at the site, on the corner of Wainui Road and Riria Kereopa Memorial Drive, points interested passers-by to a website which talks of the peaceful rural

setting “which will allow children space and freedom to move and play, awakening their senses, helping the children to learn”.

The website also has a waiting list form which specifies a minimum 6.5 hours per booking.

The new centre enters a market long dominated by Raglan Childcare & Education Centre in Wallis Street and its associated Matapihi Kindergarten at Te Mata, and Raglan Kindergarten in Stewart Street. Edith Symes

Board takes consultation role over $2m multi-purpose ‘shed’ A sporting Raglan Community Board agreed this week to take the lead in consulting the community over a project it had just learned about, a $2 million multi-purpose building planned for Kopua Domain.

The move came immediately after the board was briefed on the ambitious project

by Raglan Kopua Holiday Park Board chairman Colin Chung.

Ironically while Waikato district councillors have apparently seen the full proposal and associated feasibility study, nothing was included on Tuesday’s

community board meeting agenda other than a draft recommendation about consultation, and it was left to Mr Chung to outline what the park board envisaged for a site in the vicinity of the current Te Kopua Domain Camp Store.

He painted a verbal picture of a sixmetre high steel “shed” – with bleacher seating along two sides – which could be transformed from a full netball court into smaller courts for the likes of basketball, volleyball and badminton. There would also be 12-15 storage areas for different sports groups, changing rooms and toilets, a kitchen and provision for a concession

operation selling food indoors or outdoors.

The building would also have a mezzanine floor comprising a series of meeting rooms and a sports viewing area.

Mr Chung said that over the past 6-8 years many people had requested provision of various sports facilities at the domain, and the multi-purpose building was designed to meet those needs.

He said while a complete and fittedout building had been costed at just under $2 million, the park board had already put aside $½ a million, was eyeing $1 million from the Lotteries Commission and would approach other funders like Trust Waikato.

Neil Morris warned other members, in a recent issue of the association magazine ‘The Motor Caravanner’, to “be careful on the streets of Raglan” after an incident at a tarsealed public carpark at 8.45 one morning in which he claimed to have been officiously interviewed over where he had parked overnight.

He said the council staffer, on being told he’d spent the night on private property, “marched off without any pleasantries whatsoever”.

In a subsequent issue fellow motorhomer Ann Maxwell described having parked up for the night at the

Raglan Club carpark before driving down to the waterfront about 8am to exercise her little dog. There, she says, she was blocked in by an unmarked vehicle and “interrogated” on where she’d spent the night by a council officer who wore no uniform and produced no ID. She said she found the incident “threatening to a woman on her own” and Raglan to be an inhospitable place for motorhomers.

Council general manager customer support Sue Duignan told the Chronicle that to protect the Raglan area and prevent some of the problems that could be associated with freedom camping, the council undertook checks on some of the more high-profile spots.

“It is necessary to ask some standard questions, for example ‘did you park here overnight?’, in order to establish if people are camping there or not, but it is only to make sure there is no abuse of the area.”

Harlequins jersey makes teen a centre of attention

H

e’s still only 16 but Raglan Area School student Herewini Barlow has just secured an opportunity that his mentor says “could be his meal ticket”.

The strapping year 13 pupil was selected last month for the under 17s Harlequins, a squad which Raglan deputy principal Quenten Browne – who’s also Herewini’s mentor and manager – describes as a “feeding ground” for the likes of the New Zealand under 20s and NPC sides around the country.

Many All Blacks have played in the same NZ Harlequins jersey which Herewini was proudly wearing for a Chronicle photo last week, and the under17s development programme is recognised as providing a clear

development pathway for young and up-and-coming Waikato rugby players.

Herewini’s big break came at a three-day Harlequins training camp at St Paul’s Collegiate in Hamilton in the second week of July. Wanting to be fresh and injury-free he’d forgone the annual area schools national sports tournament in Whangarei the previous week, and his decision paid off when he impressed the selectors in a trial game on the last day of camp.

Of the 46 players in the trial, 20 faced the chop and the Raglan lad confesses to having been “a bit worried about it all”. But the trepidation vanished when an “excited as” Herewini got a phone call that night to say he’d made the Harlequins. “It was the meanest feeling,” he says.

When the Chronicle talked

with a then 15-year-old Herewini last year, he was regularly starting on the wing for Raglan’s senior rugby team after having had a taste of Harlequins rugby with their under 15s side.

But this season he’s been turning out instead at second five or centre for the Melville High first fifteen, which last Saturday earned itself a spot in the final of the Waikato secondary schools second division championship.

The first fifteen appearances have ensured he gets noticed by those who count because, as Herewini observes, “Waikato development officers come and watch our games”. And Melville and former Raglan principal Clive Hamill, along with Herewini’s Melville coach Paul Nathan, have been “happy to have him” in their side, adds Quenten.

With Harlequins selection added to the mix, Quenten has recently been driving his young protégé across the divvy three times a week – to 1½ hour training sessions at Melville on Tuesday and Thursday nights, and to whopping 2½ hour workouts at St Pauls on Wednesday evenings.

came on board a year ago to job-share now Kathy’s become busy coordinating and growing Neighbourhood Support groups, a community-owned programme that works closely with the police to make homes and streets safe.

“We try to build a (sense of) family,” says Kathy of the national crime prevention scheme, which has worked successfully in some Raglan areas including Te Akau across the harbour for 20 years.

Kathy, at 65, makes no secret of the fact she has long battled “severe” health challenges including multiple sclerosis (MS) which left her with a paralysed face back in the early ‘80s. But Raglan has been a healing place, she says, and her barely evident disability is no excuse to opt out of the workforce.

She arrived in town 15 years ago to house-sit at Upper Bow Street for Baha’i couple Miette and the late Murray Smith while they were away in Haifa, Israel, where Murray was then deputy secretary-general of the Baha’i International Community.

A degree in sociology and education behind her, Kathy had travelled extensively in New Zealand working with people – especially youth – from all cultures but also venturing to Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and American reservations as a Baha’i who believes in “service to community” for personal wellbeing.

That philosophy still drives Kathy, and in her role now as a volunteer at the police station there’s a need for empathy, she says. It’s important that people are heard and listened to and that any cultural barriers drop down, she insists. “I’ve got a listening ear.”

While she and Fran both have paperwork and phone calls to do down at the station to clear the way for the three constables on duty at any one time, they also have to be ready to greet people and sometimes deal with difficult situations.

Fran says compared to the hospital environment she’s familiar with people might not be so “comfortable” at the police station. She sees the volunteers’ job as helping allay their fears and finding the best outcome for them.

Fran’s son is a policeman and it was he who suggested his mother might like to work at the local station after the recent loss of her job and marriage, coupled with major back surgery, left her feeling “rudderless”.

The job’s given her a reason to get up in the morning, she says. Now 67, Fran was able to pull her life together again and has a whole new respect for police work too after seeing it from the inside.

She and Kathy have become good friends and believe the face at the front desk is more important than that impersonal, automated response at the door only.

The small police team they work with– Raewyn McLachlan, Dean McMillan and Kevin Bailey – reckon they couldn’t do without their volunteers. In “sifting” not only the lost and found property but also attending to myriad details daily, Kathy and Fran clear the way for them to get on with the core job of policing.

“We couldn’t do without them,” Kevin told the Chronicle. “They’re essential.”

t was Saturday, the 10th of August.

Young girls dolled up and guys turned themselves into gentlemen for a night to remember. It was the night of the Raglan Area School’s senior ‘Crystal’ Ball.

Just like every other senior school

ball, Raglan Area had an amazing ball committee, built up of the school’s year 11 – 13’s, who worked for weeks to turn the town hall into a sparkling wonderland for other senior students and teachers to enjoy.

And what an incredible job they did.

This year, the ball committee went above and beyond, creating what has been called ‘maybe the best Senior Ball to be held in

the past few years’. Awesome music, great food and a gorgeous set up. In the end, it was a great turn out for Raglan Area School’s seniors.

Big thanks to everyone that helped out – our lovely young waitresses, parents and those in the community – to make the 2013 senior ball a great success.

The calendar again has 28 A4 pages with 13 large photos and many smaller pictures, all taken by Raglan Ramblers on their weekly walks and covering the countryside from the summit of the divi to Aotea. Most see the divi from the road, but it looks even more impressive from a vantage point 80 metres above it. The views of the beaches and cliffs to the north

of Raglan show a very different coast to that more familiar to us. The cover photo (see above) shows the pancake rocks of that coast. This calendar includes new venues for the Ramblers, including the other pancake rocks, to the south of us, at Schnackenberg Bay. In previous years photos have been arranged by the month they were taken, but this year only the main pictures have followed that pattern. The calendar has three main aims: to help Friends of Wainui Reserve fund their work at the reserve, to publicise them and their founding group, Raglan Ramblers, both of which offer free membership and welcome new participants, and to reveal to residents and visitors alike the hidden gems around us.

Friends of Wainui was formed in 1993 after a campaign had saved the former Pilot Reserve (the Governor appointed a pilot to serve ships entering the harbour as early as 1860) from sale for housing development.

The Friends look after the 10 hectare reserve, either side of the Wainui Stream, just beyond the Harbour Care nursery on Wainui Rd. This former farm, which is part of the 140 hectare council reserve, has had about 15,000 trees planted since 1993.

The remaining gaps are being filled with new planting this year – ring 825 7866 if you'd like to help.

We are looking for a well organised person to manage the distribution of advertising material and local newspapers to household letterboxes in the area. The role includes supervising and being responsible for a small team of deliverers.

This is a part-time contract position where you are able to co-ordinate the majority of your work from home as well as being able to have the opportunity to continue or apply for work in other fields.
