t’s that time of the year again to dust off the cobwebs of your bike and get into some serious gravel riding training.

Raglan’s iconic winter cycle event is going into its 6th edition this year.

The classic 43km route is back and we have kept the extended distance of 57km.

Over the years the Karioi Classic has become a popular winter event.

More and more national cycling talent has been entering the race, like Commonwealth silver medallist Sam Gaze and singlespeed world champion Garth Weinberg.

The event has also been generating a busy profitable weekend for local businesses in the slow winter period.

Not into cycling? No problem, this year we are also organizing our second Karioi Classic Run on the same day.

43km over multi-terrain including gravel, farm tracks and beach.

Once again, there will be heaps of prizes to be won, cash prizes for the winners, a mountain bike, a 2 night stay at a holiday bach, etc.

CB candidate meeting this Sunday Raglan Residents & Ratepayers Association has again organised a meeting to give the five candidates for the two seats in the Community Board byelection a platform to tell us about themselves, the issues and why we should vote for them.

Voting papers go out on 14 May. In previous Community Board elections the Chronicle has given lots of coverage, but this time the by-election candidates’ names have only appeared in print in a Council advert at the back of the paper. This may reflect the lack of interest of voters in local elections.

In 2001 51.9% of Raglan electors took part in choosing our councillor. By 2013 that was down to 33%.

That means that any candidate who can get the other two thirds to vote has a good chance of winning.

So far none of the candidates has done much campaigning. Sunday will be an opportunity for them to test how their message is received. Sunday will be a chance for us to hear if things will stay much the same, or whether there are any ideas or people who might change things. Be there!

Raglan remembers the Anzac sacrifice

undreds of people turned out in Raglan on Saturday to honour the 100-year anniversary of the ANZACs first landing at Gallipoli, Turkey during World War I. The special ANZAC ceremony began with a parade to the Raglan war memorial in Bow Street led by local veterans, followed by members of the 161 Battery and local police, fire and coastguard services.

Kathleen Gavin, a minister at Raglan’s Anglican Church, and kaumatua Sean Ellison led the service, which marked the April 25, 1915 Allied Forces’ landing at Gallipoli that resulted in heavy casualties for New Zealanders and Australians, as well as the French, British and Indian soldiers fighting alongside them.

Kathleen Gavin said ANZAC Day was a time to remember the soldiers’ bravery and sacrifice, as well as those who returned emotionally, physically and spiritually traumatised.

“May their sacrifice never be forgotten

and may we continue to cherish the freedom they fought for,” she said.

Sean Ellison said it was good to see so many young people coming to commemorate ANZAC Day. “It’s important that they learn about the past so they can equip themselves for the future,” he said.

Raglan Area School head girl Rylee King talked about her family’s own experience with war through her grandfather, who had served in Malaya during the 1950s.

RAS head boy Rhys Daysh remembered former RAS students who had gone to war, and said young people did not know the reality of war these days, only what they saw on movies.

Master of Ceremonies Colin Hodkinson, president of the Raglan Returned Services’ Association, said the organisation was proud that all the money collected through the sale of poppies was used for the welfare of soldiers and their communities.

More than 30 different local organisations, schools and individuals laid

wreaths at the war memorial, with crosses alongside to mark the local soldiers who had fallen.

The New Zealand flag was lowered to half-mast while the Last Post bugle call rang out, then the RSA ode was read before the flag was raised once more.

The day ended with veterans, guests and those who took part in the parade moving to the Raglan Club for refreshments, entertainment and spending time with old friends, Colin said.

He said the ANZAC Day meant so many different things to different people.

More young people were involved in the commemoration now too, possibly because of the recency of conflicts New Zealanders were involved in, such as Korea, Vietnam and the Gulf War, with a frequency of causalities being noted.

“It’s all right there in your face,” he said.

“And I think there’s a great abhorrence, especially in New Zealand, of war.”

“Things are happening at The House,” PR adviser Chrissy Hodkinson told the Chronicle on Friday of the new ‘Connect Whaingaroa/Raglan’ initiatives. “While the community house of old has been a hub of activity since opening on site 15 years ago, The Raglan House is keen to work more collaboratively with other local groups to help us move forward”, she said.

“People in our community need to see what’s available here (in town),” Chrissy added, explaining the concept of the open day or expo to be held in the town hall on June 6. She’s calling now for local clubs and organisations to get involved by booking a stand, at no cost, to promote their activities.

It’s to be a non-commercial day, Chrissy pointed out, the sole purpose being to better support local residents. “The more connected our community is, the healthier and more resilient it can be.”

A new Youth Hub – Connect Youth – will be opening in the old Coastguard building by the Fire Station and will operate on a Thursday afternoon during term time from 3 – 7pm. The Youth Hub has emerged from the Ministry of Social Development social sector trials which have been conducted over the past two years in five towns including Raglan.

This age group had indicated in a survey that they didn’t feel they belonged in our community, said Chrissy. They cited a lack of both their own space and a voice amid the town’s growing tourism trade.

Local youth activities had been “very limited” in the past, Chrissy said, and including young people the ‘Connect Whaingaroa/Raglan’ campaign was important. We are working with Raglan Area School and the Ministry of Social Development and are keen to help foster, develop and support the youth in our community as much as we can.

At the other end of the age spectrum there’s a new IT initiative aimed primarily at older people – an internet café – starting next week and running on Monday, Thursday and Friday afternoons.

“We’ll see what the demand’s like,” said manager Sharon Tribe, who foresees the possible need to extend the time available for people to surf the net and check their emails. The computer sessions – relying on six new laptops which have come courtesy of a Lotteries grant – will be run on a koha basis for half hour time slots, she explains.

There’s a plan too for the internet café to work in with area school students who might be available to connect with older users less familiar with information technology.

The Raglan House also has computer classes on Friday mornings for beginners, with a qualified IT instructor. At just $20 to register for the four-week blocks there was a “substantial demand”, said Sharon, and the classes were now booked through till September.

Meantime the Bargain Basement that operates beneath The Raglan House has had a recent upgrade which includes the provision of Eftpos facilities. The op shop was “hugely dependent” on the community for its supply of good quality stock, from clothing and crockery to books and bric-abrac, said Chrissy.

“It’s our only source of untagged

funding, and crucial to the sustainability of the community house.” New health services at The Raglan House this year – all of which can be accessed free – include both a social worker and drug and alcohol counsellor on Wednesdays, and a counsellor from the Rape and Sexual Abuse Healing Centre on Tuesdays.

A shoppers minibus service is also available on Tuesdays. People can be collected from their homes at around 9.30am and brought into town and then driven home again after their shopping or other business.

This is a combined venture between The Raglan House, The Raglan Club, the Raglan RSA and SuperValue with funding support also coming from the Raglan Community Board. Phone the House on 8258142 to make a booking to use the bus – bookings must be made by Monday each week.

Local golf team making a strong pitch for glory Raglan Golf Club has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity in recent years and as if they were riding that wave the Prebble Cup Team representing Raglan has surged to hitherto unattainable heights in the Waikato wide competition.

The Prebble Cup is a prestigious knock out competition that is competed for by 36 teams from throughout the Waikato. The

Playing the Te Kowhai team it was a tense local derby and after coming back from a three to one deficit at the halfway stage the team managed to pull one ahead as the final pair approached the 18th tee. Peter Moir was

one shot down and needed to win the hole for the team to progress to the semi finals for the first time in its history. As his nerve held he needed a knee shaking three foot putt to secure the win for Raglan and in front of a packed gallery he sunk the shot to the delight of his team mates. Raglan now move onto the final four and will play on the 3rd of May for a rags to riches chance to appear in the Grand Final.

Locals meet giraffes and more on Animal Health Column For Raglan People + their Pets unique art trail A

giraffe stood on the hill – tall, strong, majestic and completely still - while down below three giraffes meandered around the countryside. And still the giraffe on the hill did not move.

by New Zealand artist Jeff Thomson that looks real, and yet seems so out of place in the New Zealand’s landscape.

To add to the confusion, there are three real giraffes nearby, wandering around grassy fields in their longnecked, long-legged way - you can even feed them.

Then there are the turkeys and the ostriches that roam free, while other birds flock to the various ponds and a couple of zebra and herds of water buffalo, lamas and other exotic creatures grace the hills.

But the animal life, although lovely, is not the half of it. The real raison d’être is the art, a lot of it well photographed and recognisable, such as the Richard Serra’s leaning wall sculpture, Te Turirangi Contour, and the long red horn of Anish Kapoor’s Dismemberment.

This is the Gibbs Farm – an amazing collection of 18 large sculptures scattered amongst unusual animals and rolling hills overlooking the Kaipara harbour, like a gigantic outdoor art gallery.

The 4sq km farm north of Auckland is owned by one of New Zealand’s most successful businessman, Alan Gibbs, and was bought in 1991 to house his growing collection of abstract minimalist art.

Once a month, except over winter, the farm opens for a few hours to allow up to 1500 members of the public a free glimpse of the works created by some of the world’s leading contemporary artists, who have mostly been commissioned to create their largest artworks specifically for the farm landscape.

Other artists include Graham Bennett, Chris Booth, Daniel Buren, Bill Culbert, Neil Dawson, Marijke de Goey, Andy Goldsworthy, Ralph

Last week Raglan people got the opportunity to visit the farm on a bus trip organised by the Raglan Old School Arts Centre committee, which organised its first visit to the sculpture farm two years ago.

“To go up there and actually experience it – it’s not just art, it’s the landscape and the animals.

There’s something for everyone,” said committee member Maureen Soames, who helped organise the trip.

The highlight of the day was to wander around the sculptures and realise the sheer size and significance of them – such as the 27m-high steel column artwork, 88.5deg Arc, by Bernar Venet.

“It’s incredible that we as Kiwis can go and have a look at it,” Maureen said.

The different vistas of the rolling hills and gullies combined with the ever-changing tidal Kaipara Harbour – the largest harbour in the Southern Hemisphere – meant the landscape

providing the backdrop to the art was always changing.

Some of the sculptures were also created from the landscape, such as Maya Lin’s Fold in the Field, which was so unobtrusive that it almost seemed part of the land. Others were just affected by their environment, like the George Rickey’s Two Rectangles, which only moved with the wind.

The excursion was a good workout for the visitors, as they free-ranged around the farm, walking for a couple of hours to discover one sculpture after another.

Then of course there were the animals: “How many opportunities do you get to feed giraffes and get that close to them?,” Maureen said.

To finish off the trip, which was a fundraiser for the Old School Arts Centre, the bus called in at Matua Winery at Waimauku on the way home for some wine tasting.

Maureen said because of the great demand, the committee may keep arranging trips to Gibbs Farm every two years and may arrange trips to other sculpture parks in future also.

GP makes a great ‘Buddy’ A Raglan doctor has received an award for her special support of a patient with a bleeding disorder.

Dr Fiona Bolden has been recognised with a special ‘Buddy Award’ from the Haemophilia Foundation of New Zealand Inc. (HFNZ) on 17 April 2015, World Haemophilia Day. Bolden, a general practitioner at the West Coast Health Centre was nominated by her patient Linda Mellsop-Anderson of Kawhia for helping make living with her von Willebrand disorder (vWD) much easier. Linda suffers from a rare form of the bleeding disorder, Type 2B, which affects her body’s ability to form blood clots.

“She’s always been there for me with well-based advice. Her words have given me strength, understanding and patience,” said Mellsop-Anderson.

Launched in 2015 and supported by healthcare company Novo Nordisk, the Buddy Awards recognise the vital support provided by friends, families, and health professionals who have to cope with the everyday challenges that bleeding disorders can involve.

A national initiative, other Buddy Award winners include nurses, physiotherapists, family and friends of people with a bleeding disorder.

HFNZ Chief Executive, Richard Chambers, said: “The lack of public awareness of bleeding disorders means that families and friends take on a great deal of responsibility for their loved ones. The Buddy Awards are a way for people with a bleeding disorder to give a very special thank you to their ‘buddy’, be they friends, family or committed healthcare professionals.”

he root of Astragalus has been used for hundreds of years in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a herb that tonifies the Qi (energy) and blood.

Ray Brown with his 1958 German Borgward Isabella Coupe The Chronicle recently caught up with Ray Brown.

Tell us about your car, what make and model?

1958 German Borgward Isabella Coupe How did it come to be yours?

I brought it from the Hamilton Borgward agents in 1965, it had been brought into NZ in 1960.

Have you always had a thing for classic cars?

Yes, from a young age I have enjoyed working on old cars and machinery, and I have other classic cars.

Do you work under the bonnet?

Yes always.

Do you come from a family of car enthusiasts?

Not really.

How does it drive?

Very well for its age, underpowered for the weight of the car, it was built for the German Autobahns for cruising.

Favorite journey you have taken in it?

I went around the South Island, years ago and spotted another Coupe down there, there were only 6 coupes brought into NZ in the 60’s.

Best thing about owning this car?

A rarity in NZ, and it’s looks.

Worst thing about owning this car?

All the sheds that I have had to build to store the cars in.

What makes your vehicles

unique?

The Borgward Coupe is unique as it is how it came out of the factory in 1958, and there are not many of them in NZ. My other cars all have there own uniqueness as the Willys ute I built from a Willys sedan, and both my 1937 Willy’s have been modified so that they can be driven easily and on a daily basis.

I also have a Borgward Arabella and there are only a few of them in NZ. The Borgward factory had been taken over in the war to produce military vehicles for the German army, after the war it went back to producing Isabella’s and Arabella vehicles but then closed in 1961.

There are still a few Borgward vehicles overseas but not many around in NZ.

On Saturday 23 May, Yot Club will be hosting The Raglan Rip Curl after party, which will feature some of New Zealand’s top musical talent.

Music Month is bought to an end by one of the country’s top bands, Trinity Roots, playing Saturday 30 May. People still remember the legendary gig at the town hall a decade ago. Trinity Roots are one of NZ’s best ever bands with a power to their music rivaled by very few acts. Touring their new album Citizen as well as playing their extensive back catalogue this is a fantastic way to finish a great month of music.

All other weekend nights Raglan’s best Djs will be playing inc Sundays and the Yot is also open Thursdays with free pool, sky sport and great music.

Our life’s journey has taken us to various points in NZ: North Otago, Bible College in Tauranga, Raglan, Hawkes Bay and back to Raglan. Our son and his family are in Hamilton whom we love to see, with daughters in Wellington and Perth.

We both have part-time jobs, and various volunteering roles around Raglan which we enjoy. Life is good.

God is in the centre of my life, keeping me stable, safe and secure. Give God a try, He loves you with a perfect love and is just waiting, with arms outstretched for you! He did it for me and I know He can do it for you too.

St John Raglan recently celebrated the acheivements of some of their officers. Carol Millar and Bush Barton received their medals for 12 years service to St. John.

A social evening farewelled Sue and Neil Gilshnan who have given many years to Raglan StJohn as officers and members of the Area Committee. We wish them well on their move to Hamilton.

St John Appeal Week saw Raglan officers and supporters collecting on the street and on the Wainui bridge, which raised a great sum towards costs for equipment for our ambulance.
