How would you describe Nia? I would describe Nia as an amazing, The Raglan Club. It’s a fusion of nine different movement philosophies - dance, martial arts and mindful movement arts so you get to experience moving in many different ways.

How did you become involved with Nia? I came upon Nia in Ecuador while I was staying at a yoga studio. They had Nia classes on their timetable and I was like “what is that?” I was told it was a yogary-dancey-martial arts thing... I needed to try it.

What training is required to become an instructor?

You need to have completed a 7 - day ‘White Belt’ course, where you experientially learn about the body and mind. You also must be licensed to teach with the Nia Technique association.

Who is Nia great for?

Nia is great for everyone regardless of your age, physical fitness or dance “aptitude”. One of the principals of Nia is ‘The Body’s Way’. Through this you Mass on Saturday evenings at 5 pm.

the word “dance”. Both men and women can find Nia a worthwhile practice. For women, the strength element of the martial arts may be their area to improve, for men it might be the fluidity of dance that is their challenge to overcome. Perhaps flexibility and agility are areas you’d like to work on?

There is something for everyone in Nia. What is your background in terms of sport and dance?

I’ve always enjoyed sports, at first for its competitive nature and now, more so for the health side of things. When I was younger I was involved in netball teams, cross-country, waka and so on but my main passions were water sports - swimming and underwater hockey (I know... Google it - it’s very strange!). I started snowboarding while at Otago Uni where I studied for a Phys Ed degree and then learnt to surf after that. Surfing has been it ever since really.

That’s what led me to Ecuador, the surf, which led me to discovering Nia. In terms of dance, my sister and I grew up learning traditional Kiribati dancing from my mother, so the idea of music and movement have always been familiar to me.

What attracted you to Raglan?

The surf... That was pretty much it! I originally moved from Wellington to live in Hamilton but lucky for me a friend suggested living in Raglan and commuting.

As it turns out it’s not such a novel idea, but at the time, to me, it was genius! I’m glad that happened and I moved here - apart from the amazing surf, the community feel in Raglan is very special.

When and where are the Nia classes in Raglan?

Nia classes are held at the Union Church http://www.weathermap.co.nz/?p=ragla hall on Stewart Street every Monday and Wednesday at 5:30-6:30pm and on Friday at 9:30 -10:30am. First class free.

Info afternoon to peddle planned MTB track’s merits

aglan’s own mountain bike track beneath the forest of pine trees near the Wainui Reserve trig could well be up and running by this spring if there’s enough interest and if the project attracts sufficient funds, come August when community grant applications are processed.

The five to ten kilometre-long track – which would cater for all ages and skill levels – will take only six weeks to build, says Raglan Mountain Bike Club treasurer Dirk de Ruysscher.

He’s pretty sure now the planned track will soon become a reality.

To generate interest in the project the club’s organised an info afternoon – not just for members but for all cyclists – starting at Wainui Reserve on Sunday week, where the benefits of the facility will be outlined and locals can see the site’s potential for themselves.

“Definitely the focus of the day is just to have a look,” says club president Merren Tait, a keen cyclist who came to town several years ago and soon after set up the MTB club. “We’ll start up high on the reserve and walk or bike across farmland to

the top of the pine trees.”

While some may choose to return the same way, others could carry on through the pine forest – where the track will be built – to Ocean Beach carpark at the end of Riria Kereopa Memorial Drive.

The club – which is now an incorporated society – recently emailed members encouraging them to support the new track by paying for the first time their annual subscriptions, money which would help meet initial costs. Local GP and Karioi Classic regular Mike Loten reinforced that need, so the design plan for the first three kilometres of a “high quality single track network” could be paid for.

Adam King from Rotorua company Empire of the Dirt had produced the plan, Mike told members, and it was he who has also designed the “fantastic” new bermed tracks in the Redwoods (Whakarewarewa Forest).

“We will get Rotorua-quality tracks on our doorstep,” Mike enthused.

Meantime Merren has told club members it’s taken at least three years to get to the point where mountain biking is officially part of the Wainui Reserve’s management plan. “MTB tracks have been signposted for development, but the plan

doesn’t detail any processes in establishing the tracks.”

Dirk has put the cost of the $49,000 MTB track in perspective by pointing out a swimming pool cover costs $75,000 and a modest children’s playground around $100,000. He believes the facility will be good for the town because it will give families and sportspeople something else to do, in all weathers, besides surfing.

Long and winding roads lead team ‘k3m’ to Taupo’s shores

our Raglan women can safely say they know all the back roads around Ruapuke and Mt Karioi intimately. That’s because for weeks now the team of working mums with young families have gone walking, night and day, in training for this weekend’s Oxfam Trailwalker.

It’s a charity event attracting more than 1000 walkers or runners annually to Taupo, all keen to complete within 36 hours a 100-kilometre trail – boasting some of the North Island’s “finest” scenery – which skirts the shores of the lake and takes in the hilly terrain of surrounding farmland.

“We’re ready for this,” Kim Waterson told the Chronicle last week of the challenge she and her friends are looking forward to. They’re heading south Friday night in a campervan and will start walking the trail at dawn, along with a few hundred other teams of four doing the same.

Sometime on Sunday from 6pm, they’ll finish their endurance walk. And yes they’ve done a couple of night walks – after getting their primary school-aged kids to bed – in preparation for the event which demands torches and head lamps to light the way.

They’ve also added another 8km onto the 44km Karioi Classic route – a “oneoff” training exercise.

So what motivates the four to commit to such a huge undertaking? “To be honest, we want to contribute to a good cause,” they say. “And hey, it’s one way to connect with good friends!”

They’ve all enjoyed socialising while training, having been a bit short on what they call ‘girlfriend time’ in their busy lives. They also reckon endurance events

Oxfam Trailwalker New Zealand is part of a global network raising money for families fighting poverty in Southeast Asia and the Pacific. While teams are encouraged to work together to raise at least $2000, team ‘k3m’ as they’re called because of their first names – Kim, Kristi, Keri and Malene – have already exceeded that target by more than $300 thanks to their families and friends.

And they’re hoping for more generous donations yet, before the mid-June fundraising deadline.

“settling in”, they say, but they reckon last year’s local team ‘Raglan Wahine’ have been a wealth of information and advice.

‘K3m’ has also got a two-strong support crew, one of whom did the walk last year in a different team.

Now, as Malene says, they can but hope to become “thick-skinned” during the physical and mental challenge, both to reduce the risk of blisters and to ward off abuse as they begin to hobble.

Light exercise group going strong Maintaining your mobility can get harder and harder as you get older and one of Raglan’s longest running groups, the Light Exercise Group, helps community members stay active and their sessions held twice a week are as popular as ever.

Formed 18 years ago, the Light Exercise Group holds their sessions in the St. Peter’s Hall every Monday and Thursday.

Over the years the group has acquired several pieces of equipment like treadmills, exercycles, rowing machines and recumbent machines through grants, fundraising and donations.

Running for an hour, the first half hour is spent on the machines and the second half is spent doing stretches and floor exercises.

Run by instructor Julie Cockram, she says, ”It can be a bit harder to get active once you get to this stage of your life and knowing that I’m being helpful and seeing how much people enjoy themselves is a rewarding experience.’

With members’ ages ranging from 50 to 80 plus, many members remark how their fitness, mobility, health and their attitude to life has improved after being with the group for a few months.

Group president Noleen McCathie who has been involved for a number of years now remarks on the effect the exercise has had on her health.

“I get tests done for my bone density and in the past couple of years there’s been no deterioration, you don’t realise how important it is to keep active over the

years,” said Noleen.

Having a cuppa after their Thursday sessions, there’s a social element to the group as well.

“Some of the ladies carpool together and they’ll have a cup of tea on Thursday and talk about their gardens,” says Secretary/Treasurer Graham Hubert.

It’s simple: Kevin’s replacing and been replaced by Kevin T

he face was unfamiliar at first but the front office staff at Raglan police station have no trouble remembering the name of their new policeman. And it’s a fair bet it’s just the same at Timaru police headquarters down south. That’s what happens when a Kevin replaces a Kevin twice over.

The new Raglan arrival is Senior Constable Kevin McGartland, whose predecessor here was Kevin Bailey and whose successor down south – by remarkable coincidence – is one Kevin Grant.

Kevin – McGartland, that is – has been on the job here just over a month now but is flying back to Timaru sometimes on his days off, as he did last week, because his wife’s still there while they try to sell their house.

The McGartlands had been wanting to move north for ages, and in another coincidence of sorts the opportunity came

about not only because Kevin Bailey had recently retired here but also because the Timaru Kevin’s police dog was due to retire.

The couple came to Raglan in midJanuary for Kevin’s interview and a lookaround, liked what they saw and so with his getting the job it “worked out real well”.

“Raglan is a lovely wee spot – friendly and welcoming,” the 51-year-old says.

He’s already helping coach a Raglan senior rugby side and he’d also like to get into fishing when he’s off duty.

His wife is a nurse and they have four sons in their early to mid-20s who variously live in France, Dunedin, Christchurch and Timaru.

Kevin’s been policing 10 years now and while Timaru has a much bigger station – it serves a population of 27,000 – he points out he’s done “quite a bit of relieving” in small South Island stations.

Despite the downsize he sees his overall task as the same, and that is to ensure “you treat everyone fairly”.

Pim Blair: For the love of horses

Raglan West resident Pim Blair’s life has always been connected, one way or another, with horses.

Early memories growing up near Gisborne were of riding horses to school.

Her Dad always had horses handy at the homestead. Pim maintains her affinity with the animal stems from those early days, observing how her father behaved and treated them.

Since then the former jockey has raced horses all over New Zealand, worked for trainers and owners doing track-work and spent a large chunk of her life developing an uncanny and very real bond with them.

Connections to Raglan also run deep.

For 40 years Pim and husband Scotty brought horses out to Raglan to enjoy the beach. When Scotty became unwell the couple made the decision to finally settle in Raglan some 15 years ago.

“It is especially good for racing horses to have a spell on the beach and in the water. The sand and water are forgiving unlike the often hard tracks they race on.

The environment is peaceful.”

Today Pim is known throughout the country and overseas as a person who can successfully bring a horse back from injury. Pim is regarded as a specialist when it comes to ironing out behaviour problems with the ‘naughty ones’ as well.

“I’ve just returned Harold to Johny Morell at Taupiri. He’s been with me a few weeks. I gave him the name Evil, short for Evil Knievel because he was a bit mad really. A beautiful horse who just needed time and enough contact with people to sort the fizziness out of him.”

Pim Blair on her horse ‘Mo’ preparing for a beach walk approach. While she’s busy between horses, when she’s with each one, she takes her time. Unlike the more pressurecooker environment that exists today where attending to a large number of horses every day leaves little time for them to be around humans.

“I give them time to breath and they come to trust and enjoy the rhythm of their day here.”

‘Takeachance’ a new arrival from Hong Kong, who Pim calls Herby, is set to spend a few months with her. The fact that owners are prepared to spend the sort of money it takes to send a horse that distance speaks volumes about the reputation within the industry Pim has acquired over the years.

Her faithful pony ‘Mo’ is a beautifully natured horse. He loves the company of the visitors and gets quite put out if the routine changes. The benefits of taking

horses into the sea-water are manifold Pim says.

“Salt provides a lot of healing. The deeper you can go the better.”

While over the years hundreds of horses have come into her care to then be sent back to continue track-work, there have been some she has helped find other situations for, including Riding for the Disabled and horse-trekking.

Carrying the sort of energy Pim does to maintain her remarkable fitness and vitality gives rise to the question about what form her own ‘breathing-out’ takes.

The answer - two polar opposite pasttimes she has become passionate about; ballroom dancing and outdoor bowls. She is currently working toward sitting her international grades in ballroom dancing and is a regular at bowling weekly rollups.

That was the quandary which faced more than 30 locals when they gathered upstairs at Valente’s restaurant on Tuesday night to try to progress the Raglan town square project which evolved out of “place making” guru David Engwicht’s day-long workshop in the town hall back in February.

While a public meeting in the town hall supper room a few weeks back gave the nod to a 12-month trial of a town square at the intersection of Bow and Wallis streets, this week’s gathering to progress the project reverted to more of an ideas session after it was learned that no engineers’

Meeting facilitator Gillian Cox attributed the delay to council engineers having decided to close the busy intersection to traffic but then having a rethink and opting to keep it open.

It’s a turnaround which fellow project promoter Lisa Thomson acknowledged “should ease people’s minds”, but meantime it’s not known how big the town square can be and those who turned out to Tuesday’s meeting were left – as another speaker put it – to “focus on what we can do meantime”.

Discussion at the 1½ hour meeting ranged from what features might be incorporated in the “linger nodes” – an interactive sculpture, a covered

photographed riding were among myriad suggestions – all the way to what timbers and recycled materials should be used.

Earlier, Raglan SuperValue owner Richard Jacobsen expressed strong concern that the project lacked hard data and was “putting my business under threat”. He urged caution with changes that could impact on the livelihoods of the supermarket’s staff.

However by the pow-wow’s end organisers felt there had been “some progress with consensus” as well as a lot of good ideas, and were hopeful they’d have the engineers’ report by the time of the next meeting in a fortnight.

Junior fisho’s hook up at the wharf

T hosted “Juniors on the Wharf” on he Raglan Sport Fishing Club

April is gardening change month and is just as exciting for some of us as spring is.

You can choose to rest some parts of your garden till spring, or you can prepare it for winter flowers and vegetables. Resting still means digging over, adding compost and lime and seeds of mustard, oats, or lupins.

The ground is still warm, so for winter gardeners, turn over the soil, add lime, and seeds of carrots and broad beans.

Plant out lettuce, leeks, caulis, cabbage, broccoli, spinach and silver beet.

Flower garden: there are many flowers to get under way - poppies, sweet peas, violas, pansies, polyanthus, wall flowers, stocks and many others. Same for winter herbs, parsley, rosemary and chives.

Moisture is the biggest challenge at the moment.

Garden maintenance is full on, raking leaves for the compost bin, digging soil, pruning and hedge cutting. Taking cuttings of roses, lavender, fushias etc. Split up your spring bulbs in your ground and expand their areas. New bulbs are in garden centres now. Time to plant fruit trees. Fertilize and manure, shrubs, bushes, roses, citrus, your lawns and existing fruit trees. For those of you who mulch with pea straw, dig it in with compost as it has nitrogen fixing nodules.

 

Manuring is not complicated. Get a bag of sheep pellets and distribute it around. That is all that’s required.

Storage time: Potatoes, kumara, pumpkins, butter cups, onions can now be stored. Make certain all to be stored are perfect and do not have skin ruptures as they could rot.

Storage has to be dry and dark.

Even apples, can be stored on wire netting in the car shed roof for example.

Save seeds of beans, cucumber, tomatoes, potatoes, peas, sweet peas, marigolds for next season.

April Moon. New Moon on the 29th April. Full Moon 15th April.

Seed planting between the 2nd to the 11th. Maintenance of gardens after the 20th.

Plant of the Month: Iceland poppie plants and sweet pea seeds.

Saturday 22nd March from 1.30 until 3.30 - this coincided with high tide, which sees the best fishing in the wharf area. Entry was free to all participants with all under 13’s being accompanied and entries taken up to 15 years of age.

We had great weather and masses of children. The organisers were very pleased that the event had been postponed. The wharf would not have been the place to be during cyclone Lusi.

All the kids got a couple of Ice blocks and a drink care of “Fish at the Wharf” and not to be forgotten Coffee at the wharf helped out with some prizes as well. Hamilton’s Top Catch supplied the 1st 2nd and 3rd prizes and Placemakers helped out with advertising.

The event is not only about the heaviest fish but also about the kids learning to handle fish for release in the correct manner. Each child got a Black Magic fish towel with instructions to wet it and for it to be used in

the event of catching an undersized fish. MPI measuring tapes were placed strategically around the wharf area.

This event was enjoyed by all and the Raglan Sport Fishing Club will be making this an annual event. Sheryl Hart

Masterchef book launch this weekend Raglan MasterChef winner Aaron Brunet will launch his long-anticipated cookbook this weekend at the Old School Arts Centre. Locals are invited to come along and “taste a few things”.
