This week we talk to Andrew Bradbury of Mojo Marine about working on super yachts.

How did you first get the opportunity to Marlin Cafe & Grill. Dine in. On the Wharf...........................................825 0010 work on super yachts?

After sailing around the world, I ended up in Palma on the island of Marjorca Spain in 1998. Palma is a hub for large yachts, that mainly stop there for maintenance between Mediterranean and Caribbean seasons.

What was your role?

I was in charge of the engineering, these yachts are complex, so that keeps you busy!

Mainly sailing yachts, my longest employment was for 6 years aboard a 215ft 3 masted schooner, a beautiful and powerful sailing machine, since then I have done some work on motoryachts, but they are not as exciting!

What did you love most about life www.national.org.nz onboard?

I love the connection to the ocean, I think its a great way to see and experience the world. You certainly have different experiences travelling by boat than you do have being in amongst crowds in airports, taxis and hotels! You gain some good skills, you don't have the ability just to hop off when things get tough, so you need to be prepared, work as a team and get a buzz from it across.

living and working in a small environment, but I have worked on yachts, where the crew have been tight and we have had some good times.

When did you first visit Raglan?

I hopped off a yacht in Nelson in 2006, got a van and discovered NZ, and was told to put it on my list of places to visit.

Why did you decide to make Raglan home?

A lovely lady! we were in Auckland for 3 years after we had our first child, and I could only handle a sea of roofs for that long!

What advice can you give to someone considering a career within the industry?

Give it a go, give it a bloody good go!

Be a team player, positive and apply yourself and one can do really well out there. Its a demanding but fun industry, you see the world and get paid well to do so. If you play your cards right, you can set yourself up for life in 10 years, if you don't spend most behind the bar, and that can happen quite easily. I am happy to meet with anybody who is keen to start and give some tips and advice.

What do you do now that you are back on the land?

I still work from time to time delivering yachts, I have just started Mojo Marine here in Raglan. I offer technical services for outboard engines, repairs and servicing.

Raglan a major influence in Auckland sorting its rubbish

T

he Community Recycling Network (CRN) set up in Raglan – of which Xtreme Zero Waste is a key player – is in the running for an $8 million contract to handle Auckland’s inorganic collection contracts from July next year.

And while Xtreme co-manager Rick Thorpe told the Chronicle last week things are still in the tender process, “we’re going to try and claim it (the contract) in the name of community so the materials are available for a network of community recycling centres soon to be established”.

CRN is a non-governmental organisation or NGO set up at a meeting at the Raglan Surf Life Saving Club rooms about 2002, he explains, and has grown its membership to include more than 50 communities from Kaitaia to Bluff all working towards a zero waste future.

One of its aims is to foster partnerships with business and local authorities – and in this instance the recycling model used in Raglan, Kaitaia, Kaikoura, Ashburton and Wanaka has been “picked up” by Auckland Council’s waste management and minimisation plan in a bid to get their region’s rubbish sorted.

It’s “really exciting”, says Rick, to have this opportunity to trial the Xtreme Waste system in an urban environment. And although there would be lots of challenges, he adds, Xtreme Zero Waste is lucky to have had a good relationship with Waikato District Council and strong support from the Raglan community.

In the past year Xtreme has hosted a number of visits by Auckland Council’s solid waste team – including councillors and 30 community groups – to its recycling site in Te Hutewai Road. “We’ve shown them around and shared our 14year experience, and as a result they have supported developing a network of community recycling groups in Auckland to help them achieve their goal of zero waste to landfill by 2040.”

In a recent Sunday Herald story the Raglan operation – which now employs 26 people – was cited by Auckland Council’s solid waste manager Ian Stupple as a good working model, creating both jobs and training opportunities.

The bold move by Auckland Council to set up 30 community recycling hubs around the city over the next 20 years signals the end of its roadside inorganic collections in favour of community facilities for the drop-off of unwanted items by some, and bargain-hunting by others, he said.

Rick believes Auckland has a wonderful opportunity to make the most of the new system. “There would be a huge social and economic change in the city and a lot of jobs and a lot of resources would become available,” he told the Herald.

The first Auckland community recycling centre to be developed is at Waiuku. Xtreme Waste is partnering with a local trust in the joint venture, says Rick.

“We would stand beside them (Waiuku), give them the systems and training and get them started.”

Ultimately Auckland Council is looking in the short term at developing five

community recycling centres – in Waiuku, Hellensville, Devonport, Waitakere and Central Auckland – from this July to the next, Rick explains, all relating to its waste minimisation plan which has long been discussed.

Waikato District Council is looking now at its options, says Rick, and might also develop a similar community recycling network which aims for an aspirational goal of zero waste. Recycling is now regarded as core business, and council/community partnerships as the way to achieve it.

Big week for seabed mining opponents

Aaron rises to occasion after book launch numbers spiral

t’s been crunch time this week Raglan environmentalists’ fight against seabed mining.

Forty locals have been arguing at an Environmental Protection Authority hearing in Hamilton against 90 per cent foreign-owned Trans Tasman Resources’ application to mine the seabed for ironsands along the west coast.

The Hamilton hearing’s in a lounge at Waikato Stadium, and was scheduled to have continued all week.

While Sea Shepherd Auckland coordinator Tracy Brown was due to have fronted up on Monday along with some Raglan locals, another key submission later this week was expected to be that of Kiwis Against Seabed Mining president Phil McCabe.

KASM meanwhile is irate that it did not have a lawyer acting on its behalf at the ”biggest week of the hearing” in Wellington last week after its application for $40,000 assistance from a Government fund was rejected.

Phil says KASM sought help from the Environment Ministry’s environmental legal assistance fund in

January and was told there was a high likelihood it would qualify. But he says KASM was told a week before the hearing began that Environment Minister Amy Adams chose not to action recommended funding to groups working on marine consent applications.

“It was gutting because we were half counting on that funding,” says Phil, explaining that KASM’s main lawyer was in New York doing United Nations work.

“If you steal a Snickers bar from the local dairy you get given a lawyer to represent you, but a volunteerrun community not-for-profit group representing thousands in a bid to protect the ocean from very real negative effects gets nothing. There’s something wrong there.”

Ironically TTR has recently been awarded a multimillion-dollar taxpayer handout for innovation, KASM points out.

Of the 4850 submissions on TTR’s seabed mining application, 18 per cent are from the Waikato – and KASM’s Cindy Baxter says the majority of those are believed to be from Raglan.

Strong book sales: Around 400 people were present during Aaron Brunet's book launch

A

aron Brunet always seemed unflappable in the MasterChef kitchen but the response to his open invitation to the launch of his new cookbook just about floored him.

About 400 locals poured into the grounds of the Old School in Stewart Street last Saturday afternoon to celebrate the release of ‘Cook With Me’, the longanticipated book by Raglan’s own MasterChef NZ winner.

The lavish 266-page book had gone on sale nationally only the previous day and Aaron wanted it to be “as fresh and as hot off the press” as possible for locals who had supported him all along the way.

But what he hadn’t counted on, until the RSVP emails began flooding in, was how much interest his local launch function would attract.

A rugby team-sized volunteer army had to help him prepare the promised taste treats but Aaron was nevertheless delighted at the success of the event, which saw 400-odd Raglan residents cram into the garden space behind the arts centre and the kindergarten.

“I thought (at first) maybe 30 would come to our home to celebrate the book going on sale,” he told his guests as they juggled newly purchased cookbooks with cups of carrot and caraway or Slovenian jota soup and chunks

of fresh-baked sourdough bread – recipes straight out of the book.

A small stage had been set up for the occasion and Aaron spoke briefly of his journey to television celebrity status, which he said began two years ago when he became “obsessed” with making sourdough.

Auditions for the 2013 MasterChef series were on at the time, he recalled, and it took only some encouragement from “the girls” – wife Ani and their daughter Ariana – to enter the competition.

One thing led to another and he put himself into it wholeheartedly, he said, while at the same time striving throughout the series to remain “the real me” which was one of the joys of living in Raglan.

Aaron sold more than 200 copies of his book – published

by Random House, as part of the MasterChef prize package – at the launch and told of how he had wanted to make it “a real slice of our life …so you feel you’re standing there and we’re cooking together”.

He remembered growing up and cooking alongside his own mother from Slovenia who was a major influence in the kitchen.

But ‘Cook With Me’ was very much a Raglan-inspired book, Aaron insisted, with seven chapters reflecting different parts of his small family’s lifestyle, whether it was a busy weekday

or leisurely Saturday.

And all the finished recipes were photographed in the kitchen of their Wainui Road home, which has also become something of a yoga studio thanks to Ani who regularly teaches the discipline.

The final chapter of the book is in fact devoted to what Aaron calls yoga treats because, as he explained, yoga is “a big part of our lives”. The simple healthy recipes – along with weekend yoga retreats at home – “made all the difference to me during the challenges and pressures of the MasterChef competition”.

He revealed he would now be focusing more on yoga and food together, through those weekend retreats. “That’s a taste of what’s coming next (in my life).”

Aaron also devoted a whole chapter of ‘Cook With Me’ to his love of bread, in particular the sourdough recipe he used in turning out 54 loaves last Friday in preparation for Saturday’s book launch.

He confessed his team of family and friends helped him prepare Saturday’s fare – which included a medley of marshmallows – all last week as ever more locals emailed to let him know they’d be there.

Aaron also gave a big thank you to Raglan’s Poulter family for coming to the party with free glasses of their Makaraka Estate range of wines.

t was standing-room only at The Shack early one morning last week as the Raglan Chamber of Commerce held a networking breakfast to brief local businesspeople on two big issues impacting on the centre of town – new earthquake legislation and the town square project.

“We had 50-odd there, a fantastic turnout,” chamber chairman Dave Currie told the Chronicle.

Raglan ward councillor Clint Baddeley updated businesspeople on where the Waikato District Council was heading with new earthquake legislation the Government was attempting to push through Parliament.

He also backgrounded the breakfast meeting on the process from when “place making” guru David Engwicht first

visited Raglan late last year through to the development of the town square project.

“There was clearly a lot of interest in the town square,” said Dave. “The chamber’s concern is to ensure there is meaningful discussion around it – to make sure any issues are debated so people can make informed decisions and not go on rumour and hearsay.”

He was encouraged there was more consensus over and understanding of the project by the end of last week, and expected to see roading issues sorted by council shortly and a new plan produced that was “not like the artist’s impression” issued by David Engwicht’s Creative Communities staff.

He said it was also suggested at the breakfast meeting there should be a big board in town to get people to indicate what they want, and maybe also a weekend sausage sizzle and chat, so there was a whole range of views “and we can arrive

The meeting also discussed the process councils were going through now preparing buildings over the next 15 years for earthquake risk. “Clearly what’s happened in Christchurch and more recently Wellington is a factor,” Dave said.

“Not that we’re high risk – but then neither was Canada.”

The earthquake risk for businesses was a longer term thing to think over, just as homeowners were doing now with house insurance.

The chamber meeting also received an update on the proposed mountain biking track at Wainui Reserve, and heard there could be good news shortly on its funding.

Barbara Kuriger – who’s farmed with her husband Louis for more than 30 years and is a director of a string of dairying and agricultural bodies as well as three familyowned farming businesses – was selected at a meeting of local party members in Te Kuiti on Sunday night.

The 2012 Dairy Woman of the Year succeeds Opunake farmer Shane Ardern as National candidate, and looks a shoo-in to make it into Parliament considering that in the last three general elections the retiring Ardern has snared two in every three votes cast in the Taranaki-King Country electorate.

But National’s track history doesn’t seem to have daunted Labour’s new candidate for Taranaki-King Country, Penny Gaylor, who has gotten quickly on the job and is set to visit Raglan next Monday morning to talk with “prominent members of the community and the media” before carrying on to Kawhia in the afternoon.

While she’s based way down on the Kapiti Coast her campaign manager Dan Armstrong, who’ll accompany her, is only a comparatively short hop away in Te Awamutu.

We have had amazing weather conditions that have boats sports fishing successfully well off our coast, inshore the bottom fishing has been also very good.

The Raglan harbour is so clean and clear at present with lots of species-particularly large trevally prevalent.     

 









It is apparent that more boats are fishing off our West coast than other seasons.

Sports fishing: the sea temperatures are still up with plenty of workups of tuna, kahawai, even packs of rat kingi’s. Multiple sightings and hook ups of marlin are still taking place.

Inshore, bottom fishing, is from 29m off Carters and along the northern coast inside that mark, Gibsons beach to the Aerial and Crayfish Point there are plenty of snapper, gurnard, slimy mackeral and kahawai. Sometimes

the swell will keep you out a bit, but the fish are on the bite. Stomachs full of biscuits. Some reports of Bar Reef and to the south the school sharks are more prevalent. Snapper off Ruapuke beach have mussels, worms, snails and baby flounder in their stomachs. The gurnard and kahawai are still in roe.

Sharp hooks and fresh bait is all you need.

Crayfish are plentiful with great conditions to operate closer to the shore, reefs and rocks.

Snapper of good size are being taken in our harbour, along with gurnard, kahawai, trevally as mentioned earlier and also the traditional flounder.

The harbour is so clean and calm and it is great to see lights at night from those spearing for flounder.

There are large numbers of ash tray depressions on the mudflats and shell beds from large fish raking up worms to eat. Inspect off Lorenzen Bay at low

tide, these are the result of trevally or snapper feeding up on the last high tide.

The harbour bar has hardly broke for some time except at low tide and I believe this influences more fish species of size to prevail in our harbour.

The annual smoked fish competition held at the Raglan Club Inc. Anzac Weekend 25th, 26th, 27th April is The Big Four Fishing Competition, held by the Waikato Sports Fishing Club. More details on their Club website.

Saturday 26th April is the Manu Bay Fishing Competition.

Remember your fish can be officially weighed at The Raglan Club Inc by contacting their bar staff.

The Raglan Bar is on the leads, using the clear sector light, watch for that swell forecasted size in the weeks ahead. Enjoy your days fishing.
