ver 60 people attended the opening of Raglan Museum's latest exhibition held last Saturday.

“Landmarks of Whaingaroa – Art by Jenny Rhodes” stirred many memories of buildings and places in Raglan that are no longer there, have changed or moved.

Jenny was accompanied by her daughters, Anastasia and Bernadette, and son, Dominic, for an early preview of the exhibition, and then joined by more family members and Raglan locals for an emotional exhibition opening.

Among the 27 original paintings on display is a water colour of the Post Office building that served Raglan from 1914 to 1978, and an acrylic on canvas of the original Raglan Wharf buildings in 2010 that were destroyed by fire that same year.

The print wall has 16 paintings that incite memories of not so long ago, such as Vinnies and the old Manu Bay Breakwater, along with a digital slideshow featuring more of Jenny’s paintings.

The exhibition will run for 2-3 months. Come along to the Raglan Museum and check it out.

Club members vote against sale

W

ith a non-binding show of hands it was obvious that the majority of the Raglan Club members that turned up to a special meeting on Sunday didn’t want to sell the property to get out of debt.

Depending on who is telling the story, over 300 or 500 members turned up for the meeting that had the sale of the Bow St premises on its agenda.

Opinions are also divided on whether there was meant to be an official vote that day regarding an offer that could or could not be worth about $5 million or more, but after about three hours of heated debate a motion was put forward to have a nonbinding show of hands.

It was about 60:40 against, or 75:25 by another account – still, it was an obvious majority.

In the end, the members made their feelings clear, and perhaps more voted with their hearts than their minds.

Members need to remember that the situation that the Club is in, that it is about $150,000 in debt and losing money every week, is not going to go away, says Raglan Club president Colin Sullivan.

It’s been a long road to get to this point, at least a year of negotiations, and an end is certainly not in sight without a solution – looking ahead, it seems perhaps there will just be more unrest and division.

There are calls for more transparency when it comes to making plans for the Club’s future, with members saying that any sale should be on the open market, not behind closed doors – Colin calls the path that was taken “respecting commercial sensitivity” and getting the best offer, what he says is 54 per cent above a registered valuation.

There’s also been unrest in the executive.

According to Colin, there is a certain member of the executive who had voiced his independent support in committee but in the public arena has “spouted the opposite, and told untruths with regard to certain facts that affect the future of the Club”; then there are “certain individuals who have tried to

hijack the process” with “out and out lies”, petitions and “far-fetched ideas” such as developing the road front of the property, a solution that has been looked into in the past and didn’t fly.

“People say we need more members but we need more members to support the Club,” says Colin, who isn’t fazed by the dissent – it’s par for the course in a large club, he reckons.

Colin says members aren’t visiting more despite knowing the financial strife the club is in, and which is largely due to lack of patronage.

“They say they will come down more but they haven’t. A lot of people that spoke against the sale don’t utilise the Club.

“We also need certain members to pull their heads in and be more welcoming to fellow members. We need more members to visit us and make themselves more aware of the dire situation the Club is in by inquiring and absorbing the information that is available from the people who are at the coalface, and not listen to and take on board absolute crap from people with personal agendas.”

At the meeting – which was members only, and they had to prove their identification – things got a bit personal and heated.

Two offers were put on the table, but both without any real substance, according to detractors. They were: “at least $5m” from Sanjay Sharma, owner-operator of Raglan SuperValue, which was actually made up of $3.5m and a house in Cliff St; and $4.5m from Surfside Church.

Options for relocation included the West Coast Health centre property and the building consisting of Orca Restaurant and Bar, which is deemed a conflict of interest due to Colin owning shares.

A further option to relocate to the Raglan Bowling Club, which the Club owns, has been deemed “fraught with difficulties” and taken off the table.

Colin says since the meeting there has been some investigation into suggestions made on Sunday to sell off part of the Bow St property or sell the Bowling Club and build a new green at the Club. And both offers for sale are still on the table.

“We are supportive of trying to stay on the site but the fact of the matter is we have to come up with a working format that is not based on supposition.”

It also has to be kept in mind that the building is too big for the number of patrons that support the Club, its size and age makes it costly to run, and it is in bad need of some TLC and maintenance.

“If members could come up with a viable solution we would grab it with both hands.”

Club member of 30 years Andreas Broring, who has been hard out campaigning against the sale of the Club, including coming up with his own concept for “Raglan Central”, says there has to be better communication from the executive regarding plans for the Club’s future to avoid distrust and bad feelings.

He says the information given to members at the meeting had no substance to it, “there was nothing in writing, no reports by lawyers, nothing seen as being the truth, just Colin saying ‘trust me’ without giving any evidence”.

“People wanted more information and Colin was not providing it.”

Andreas say it wasn’t even clear who a sale would be to – Sanjay or the Surfside Church.

“And the members probably understood that if they voted to sell they don’t know where they are going – there is no vision.”

Club member Lee Knight, who was forced to attend the meeting by this writer, says it was clear that the members were really passionate about the Club.

“The questions being asked reflected that people thought the Club hasn’t been following its own policies of communication to the members. Maybe it wasn’t a dishonest move to start with but based on a unique situation that they didn’t know how to cope with.

“Looking around you could see some people that were totally and utterly genuinely concerned and hurt that they haven’t been consulted with properly.

“Maybe people would have been more open if the communication had been done properly right from the beginning.”

A

plan a month in the making has come to fruition for Ray White Raglan as they opened the doors to a new Whatawhata office recently.

Located at the site of the popular Village Café and Eatery at the Whatawhata junction, Ray White Raglan owner/managers Dave and Julie Hanna are excited about the new

challenge and the opportunity to broaden their real estate reach from Raglan to the outskirts of Hamilton city.

What seemed like the obvious place for Ray White Raglan to expand to wouldn’t have been possible eight years ago but Dave says the upturn in Whatawhata has been phenomenal in the past few years.

“Julie was checking on a listing near the Hamilton Zoo and saw that there were hundreds of cars at the café and she said to me, we should start up there.”

The very next day Dave headed to Whatawhata to get things rolling.

“I’ve been there 25 days straight and there’s a lot of traffic stopping there every day.”

From locals and Hamiltonian day trippers to Aucklanders travelling south, Whatawhata has become a perfect pit stop, Dave says.

The Whatawhata office will focus on lifestyle rural properties and sections and will be manned by a roster of Raglan agents as well as new local agent John Donderwinkle.

Complementing the Raglan office, the Whatawhata office is already generating enquiry about Raglan property.

The current Whatawhata office is temporary for now as Ray White wait to take possession of a new office chalet being built on site.

Dave says they take their host responsibility seriously and put on a bus for staff and other Raglan locals attending the opening.

They proudly celebrated becoming Plastic Bag Free last week.

T

he concrete pill box on the shore of the harbour is a well known remnant that dates back to the second world war, but a keen family historian has uncovered a relatively obscure Raglan link to WWI. David Lloyd, who was a Raglan summer resident for many years and owned David’s Emporium in Hamilton, has cowritten a book – The Lost Boys – about his family war history, to pass down to future generations.

During his research, much of it thanks to Google, David uncovered the Raglan link and thought others – who aren’t family – might also be interested in this not as well known piece of New Zealand history.

“Explosion On Beach, Men Blown To Pieces” was the headline of a story he found on the website Papers Past, originally printed in the New Zealand Herald on April 23, 1919.

The story goes that a farmer along the coast between Port Waikato and Raglan had heard a terrific explosion and on investigation had found the “blown to pieces” remains of three Maori men and their horses.

Pieces of steel and metal were found, which appeared to be the remnants of an old mine – and it was thought that the men had been trying to recover the mine when it exploded.

It left a massive hole in the sand along the high tide line.

David says his Great Uncle Sydney Claude Lloyd had been a prisoner on the German raider SMS Wolf that had laid that mine and others in New Zealand waters during WWI. All his findings came about after sleuthing a letter from 1919 discovered in an old family trunk.

The letter was to Grandfather Lloyd from the high commissioner in London,

telling him that his brother, who had been a prisoner of war in two camps in Germany, had been repatriated to England.

The letter had stated that Sydney Lloyd was a seaman from the Wairuna, and not a soldier.

So David had googled the Wairuna and one link led to another until eventually the whole story came tumbling out.

It was 1917 when the Wolf brought the war to New Zealand waters, the ship undetected by authorities.

Great Uncle Sydney was a sailor on the SS Wairuna, a cargo boat taking supplies to England.

One June 2, 1917, near the Kermedec Islands, the Wolf’s seaplane, the Wolfchen, dropped a message by sand bag on board the Wairuna telling it that it would be bombed if it did not stop.

The crew complied and were taken prisoner on board the Wolf, joining other seamen who had been captured.

The Wairuna was plundered of its stock and sunk, and was assumed to have been lost at sea.

The Wolf then headed south to New Zealand. On June 25, 1917, according to the result of a Google search, the raider laid 25 contact mines in the shipping lane from Auckland to Australia, near Three Kings Islands, and then headed down the west coast to lay 35 mines off Farewell Spit, where ships coming from the Tasman Sea entered Cook Strait.

In the Lost Boys, co-written with Kingsley Field, it says the mine-laying was always a fearful time for the prisoners because they were in a hold right next to the mine-laying rails and if anything had gone wrong they would have been blown to smithereens.

The two minefields did have its casualties. On September 12, 1917, while approaching Farewell Spit lighthouse, there was a terrific explosion on board

the steamer Port Kembla, arriving from Melbourne.

No one was hurt and at the time it was assumed that the explosion was due to a bomb in the cargo.

It wasn’t until December 1917 that a message in a bottle was found on an island east of Borneo, written by a British merchant service officer who was also a prisoner on board the Wolf, saying that mines had been laid by the raider off South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

A mine was found near Cape Farewell in February 1918 and warnings were broadcast to all merchant ships operating in New Zealand waters to keep clear of known danger areas.

The captain of the cargo and passenger ship SS Wimmera was not convinced, however, and on June 26, 1918, the boat struck two mines in the minefield off North Cape. It sank, killing the captain and 25 crew and passengers.

The sweeping of minefields around Farewell Spit and Three Kings was ordered by the New Zealand Government, and finished in May 1919.

However, five of the Wolf’s mines washed ashore in New Zealand, including the one that killed the men at Waikouria Creek, north of Raglan.

As for the Wolf, she successfully slunk back to Germany, arriving in February 1918.

David says Great Uncle Sydney was a prisoner on board the Wolf for about nine months, before being sent to POW camps in Gustrow and then Parchim.

He finds the whole story “quite intriguing”, and thought others in Raglan might, too.

As for Great Uncle Sydney, “he only lasted three years after the war because of what I believe was the trauma he had gone through as a prisoner on the ship and in the war camps”.

Labour of love ensures rickety footbridge will not be forgotten

A

nostalgic portrayal of Raglan West’s rickety bridge across the causeway will be unveiled in a fortnight at the library – the labour of love rekindling a lot of memories for artist Robert Currie.

The 75 year old, talking to the Chronicle at his unmissable bright pink studio-cum-home alongside the vet clinic, said his whole motivation in doing the painting was his connection with the area over 50 years.

Robert first crossed the causeway linking Opotoru Rd to the Rangitahi Peninsula back in 1967. He was then a stock agent for Dalgety, and his task was to draft the Strawbridges’ lambs for sale.

He recalls waiting many a time over the years for the tide to recede so he could drive back over the primitive road below the footbridge.

More recently he marketed and sold – this time as a Wrightson Real Estate agent – the Barlow family farm on the peninsula to the Raglan Land Company which is now developing the area to provide 500 residential properties over a 20-year period.

“Suddenly the walkbridge will disappear,” Robert laments of the landmark’s imminent removal to make way for a new two-way bridge. “It’s a part of Raglan’s history – a thousand people have walked over there.”

A few months ago now Robert picked up his paintbrushes and put in “a couple of hundred hours” sketching then painting the old footbridge from recent photographs he had taken. The evocative work shows some locals strolling across the makeshift bridge, silhouetted by the setting sun.

He’s proud of the mood he was able to capture. “The dad and the girl will always remember their walk across that bridge,”

he says. He expects a similarly nostalgic reaction from the young couple also depicted in the painting.

Robert took a novel approach and painted the large – 6’x3’ – acrylic not on canvas but on a roller blind he picked up from the recycling centre. He thought the heavy fabric might just retain acrylics, and is delighted with the result.

“No-one’s ever done this before,” he laughs.

At the “launch” of his painting on the evening of September 13 – a regular late night at the library – Robert will be giving away mini prints from the original as mementos.

While Robert is a daily visitor to the library, Waikato District Council’s Raglan team leader customer delivery Mike Edmonds sees the launch function as an acknowledgment of the library’s growing role as a community hub. He points out the library has staged exhibitions for free public viewing in the past.

He sees Robert’s work, which is entitled ‘Footbridge to Rangitahi’, as a piece of history. “Anyone who’s lived here a while knows the footbridge must be at least 100 years old.”

Robert will hold on to the original of his painting for now, though reckons he could be tempted to sell if offered the right price. Ultimately he’d like to see the work permanently on show in the Raglan Museum.

An earlier work, ‘Raglan Burning’ – painted after the wharf fire of 2010 – already hangs there after having been donated to the museum by the Gallagher family.

Meantime, he’ll have a short run of limited edition ‘Footbridge to Rangitahi’ prints for sale from his studio. Ever the marketer, Robert reckons they might appeal particularly to Rangitahi Peninsula section buyers.

Painting for Robert is purely therapeutic, a hobby. “Every day I wake up and there’s always something to do.”

He paints mostly local sunsets, landscapes, seascapes and townscapes.

He’s shipped his work as far away as Australia, England, Turkey, Brazil and the US. Recently he has also donated prints of some of his paintings to auctions helping raise funds for local projects.

Students take action to help those in poverty

S

tudents from Raglan Area School are learning about living in poverty with help from Raglan Foodbank.

The senior social studies class is working on an NCEA achievement standard that requires them to “participate in a social justice and human rights action” and decided to explore poverty in New Zealand, with a focus on their local community.

Raglan Foodbank, which was started about 20 years ago by members of the Surfside Church, agreed to partner them in their social action.

On September 7, at Raglan Area School, the students will be holding a mufti day with Sumo competitions, a bouncy castle and sausage sizzle in exchange for items for the foodbank.

The students say their main goal is to raise awareness and food items for the Raglan Foodbank.

“We will be running a range of fun activities at our school next week, and instead of the students donating money to participate we are asking them to donate food items.

"We want to raise as much food and toiletries as we can, and if any people from the Raglan community want to support our social action they can drop food and toiletries at the school reception or donate at the foodbank drop-off point in the SuperValue supermarket.”
