aglan’s annual Arts Weekend will return over Auckland Anniversary Weekend, and locals, art lovers and tourists can get a peek of what to expect when an advance exhibition opens at the Old School Arts Centre on Friday, December 8.

Over 30 local artists will be unveiling a one-off, 300 x 300 mm piece of artwork created especially for the event, as well as a showcase piece. Arts facilitator Jacqueline Anderson says the exhibition provides an enticing introduction to Raglan Arts Weekend.

rganisers hope the fact 3,700-plus Facebook users have expressed interest in Raglan’s second free Music and Dance Festival will add up to a record turnout this Saturday at Papahua/Te Kopua Domain.

It was the success of last year’s inaugural festival – which attracted almost 1000 people rather than the modest 200 or so expected – that has inspired this weekend’s repeat event, says Raglan Area School maths teacher and musician Logan Nathan.

“We were super-stoked and it made us (the organisers) want to make it an annual event for Raglan.”

Logan is the man behind the Waikato Rocks Trust, which promotes original music throughout the region.

But because original music – without the big names – can be hard to sell, he adds, having free entertainment including dance groups guarantees a family-friendly day for the whole community.

Food stalls and amusements such as the ever-popular bouncy castle will also be set up at the event, which showcases six bands and five dance groups all up.

The area school’s band, CTRL+Z, and its junior kapa haka group will be among the music and cultural dance performers.

Raglan band Cloak Bay will also play, along with JayDub$ Aka J.O.D from Huntly, Looking For Alaska,The Latest Fallout and Rubita all from Hamilton.

Waikato Hip Hop from Hamilton and Imperious from Te Awamutu are the two hip-hop dance groups featured, while Hamilton’s Sutra Academy and Mon Thai will provide colourful displays of both Indian and Thai classical dance.

It’s a celebration of “fantastic” talent in our region, enthuses Logan, who commutes daily from Hamilton to Raglan.

“I have been associated for 10 years with this town and have not seen (many) free entertainment events for the community.”

Logan founded Waikato Rocks – a charitable organisation – back in 2010 to showcase and promote original music.

Airplay started small via Raglan’s more alternative radio station, Tractor FM, then grew throughout the Waikato as Hamilton’s Free FM came on board.

The wider airplay has also provided “a great opportunity to promote our (Raglan) event,” explains Logan, “There is so much talent in our region, I had to do something about it.”

A long-held passion for local music has seen Logan produce a weekly television show in the past – with live band footage – for the now defunct TV Central and Sky TV’s FACE TV. He also arranged a couple of years ago for homegrown bands to perform at Hamilton’s Altitude nightclub.

Whaanga Coast challenges rally drivers Rally New Zealand 2017 organisers and competitors would like to sincerely thank all residents for their cooperation and support of this year’s event. The rally was the final round of the NZ Rally Championship. he final stage of Rally New Zealand was held over the weekend with the Saturday service based at the Raglan airfield. Hot and dusty conditions meant racing was particularly hard on tyres.

Posting a 7-minute video clip to his Facebook page, New Zealand’s World Rally Championship star Hayden Paddon (Hyundai) described the Whaanga stage as “a true challenge that has claimed many drivers in the past” and that it is “one of the most iconic stages of NZ rallying.”

While the Whaanga Coast stage is no longer part of the WRC, the stage has been described as “world class” by many drivers, including Haydon Paddon, who missed out on the Rally New Zealand title but was victorious in winning all 12 special stages over the weekend.

Hayden Paddon took victory after two days of hard fought competition, taking an eventual winning margin of 7 minutes 28.7 seconds. He and co-driver John Kennard were dominant across the weekend.

With Paddon making only two appearances in the NZ Rally this year, the top honours were owned by Andrew Hawkeswood and Jeff Cress when

they were crowned New Zealand Rally Champions after six rounds and more than 1000 kilometres of special stages. The pair wrapped up the title by a margin of 10-points over Matt and Nicole Summerfield, with Ben Hunt and Tony Rawstorn third after one of the most intensely fought titles in years.

This Rally New Zealand event was one of the most treacherous of the season, with only 20 cars completing the 226.80 kilometre route and many of those with tales of woe to tell. The 2018 New Zealand Rally Championship kicks off with Rally Otago on April 14-15.

Future of Raglan Club in membership hands, once again

T

he future of the Raglan Club is again being put before the membership at a special meeting on Sunday, December 10 at 10am.

Despite the majority members opposing the sale in a non-binding vote at a special meeting in August, three new proposals will be put to the membership including selling a portion of the property to SuperValue owner/operator Sanjay Sharma and building a new club on the site, selling the entire property and relocating, and selling half the bowling club on James Street to finance improvements to the club.

Raglan Club president Colin Sullivan believes the partial sale to Sanjay is the best way forward for the club.

“We do feel having a supermarket will give us spin offs,” he says.

“A number of the executive feel this is the way to go for the club to be able to operate into the future. Unless we get a huge capital injection we don’t have a viable future.”

Declining membership and competition in the town has seen the club suffer, Colin

says, and many clubs around the country are in a similar position.

“I’ve spoken to clubs in the country facing the same dilemma and like all clubs we are suffering from a lack of patronage.”

Colin says the executive has taken advice from their accountants and lawyers and are seeking expert financial and business advise.

This will also be presented to members.

SuperValue owner Sanjay, who is also a club member, says he is working with the club for the best outcome for both parties.

“I want the club to succeed and the options for the club need to be for the future of the club.”

Sanjay says the offer to sell the property to SuperValue is not new and previous owner Richard Jacobsen had approached the club around five years ago.

“Raglan needs a supermarket with a full serve-over deli, bakery and butcher,” he says.

Sanjay says Progressive have several other potential sites in Raglan and regardless of the outcome of the club offer a supermarket will go ahead.

Last year the club lost more than $100,000 and Colin believes the sale will put the club in a better financial position.

He says a supermarket chain is good for the community.

“I can’t see how it can be a bad thing, especially for older people who aren’t able to travel to Hamilton.”

Club member Andreas Broring wants to see members have more say, especially given the outcome of the August special meeting.

“It would be good to include the membership in the decision-making in a better way,” he says.

“They have a lot of very good ideas and many have offered to help.”

Andreas, who has offered to buy the street-front strip of the club for $1million, believes the new design will cause problems for members with parking limitations and cutting out revenue streams such as campervan parking, which he says also brings people into the club.

Arrows point in the right direction

Taking over The Local Eatery on Wallis Street, Justin has been hard at working renovating the space to create a cosy, comfortable and relaxed atmosphere, and making the most of the sheltered garden space out the back for al fresco dining in the coming summer months.

Justin and Alix are familiar with the café scene in Raglan owning the busy corner café The Shack, the former chefs will focus on lunch and dinner at Wallis Bistro.

“The feedback we are getting from a lot of people is Raglan needs more night time dining venues,” Justin says.

Influenced by Spanish and Italian cuisines, Justin says the menu will reflect those flavour profiles and will also take inspiration from the awesome tastes unique to Aotearoa.

“You can’t grow up in the Pacific and not be influenced.”

The Great Raglan Rat Hunt

Fresh arrows have appeared following a series of head-on collisions occurred in the space of a few days.

L

ocals took road safety into their own hands after a spate of accidents and near misses involving cars travelling on the wrong side of the road.

Professional looking arrows popped up overnight last week on Wainui Road after a local man was left badly injured and his car totalled when a car came out of Rock-it Kitchen on the wrong side of the road.

Waikato District Council staff have inspected the arrows and agree the arrows are helpful where they are positioned and a road marking contractor will formally paint arrows to the required specifications this week on the same locations.

Council spokesperson John Brown says they have not received service requests for safety improvements on this road previously.

“We think it is great that the community is thinking about road safety and if there were other suggestions regarding road safety we would encourage the community to let us know.”

Council are also changing the Give Way sign to a stop sign on Whitley Street at the intersection with Wainui Road and the possibility of painting more safety arrows on Ruapuke Road to further improve road safety.

“Our roading safety engineer is also meeting with the police and the Raglan Ward councillor today to assess if there are any immediate safety improvements required ahead of the holiday season,” he says.

A

new trap library in Raglan will see predator traps available for loan for up to three months to residents.

The Karioi Backyard hub is setting up the new initiative, funded by the Department of Conservation as part of the Karioi Maunga ki te Moana project.

The aim is to give more residents the opportunity to contribute to volunteer work around the maunga, and at the same time rid themselves of nuisance pests.

In the Raglan community, there are already 240 backyard traps helping to control rats and stoats. They are in addition to about 800 traps on Mt Karioi and in surrounding coastal areas.

The Karioi Maunga project aims to restore biodiversity to the mountain, and has a special focus on the threatened seabird grey faced petrel, also known as oi.

In total, there will be three trap libraries in the Waikato. Raglan residents will have access to DOC200 stoat traps, modified Victor rat traps, A24 Good Nature self-setting stoat/rat traps and A12 Good Nature selfsetting possum traps by contacting Nic at karioi.

The Karioi Trap Library will be launched at the inaugural “Great Raglan Rat Hunt”, a competition for the biggest, fattest or longest rat, stoat or possum caught in a trap, on the weekend of December 8-10.

Registration will be at the front of the Raglan Library on Friday, December 8, 5pm-6.30pm.

Residents will be trained to safely use their traps before setting them up at home. Then, on Sunday, December 10, participants will be asked to bring any kills to a weigh-in at 2pm, which will include a prizegiving and community BBQ at Papahua/Te Kopua Domain.

The Backyard Hub is a good chance for everyone to get involved in the Karioi project and do their part without having to hike up a mountain to check traps.

Over 5000 rats, stoats and possums have been trapped by project volunteers since 2009. Every rat caught makes a difference for biodiversity!

Summer has finally arrived and Raglan/Whaingaroa is looking stunning!

While you’re lounging by, playing in or having fun on the water this summer, keep an eye out for the wee Maui dolphins. With your help together we CAN save the world’s rarest dolphins: • Fisherman? Don’t use set nets where dolphins may be found; Stay with your net – if you see dolphins, lift your net immediately • Boatie? Use a ‘no wake’ speed within 300m of dolphins; Don’t swim with Māui dolphins or attempt to feed them • Cat lover? Don’t dispose of cat litter or other animal feaces in toilets, drains or stormwater systems – this may contribute to the spread of parasitic disease to the dolphins • Everyone: Report all sightings to 0800 DOC HOT line (0800 362 468) Remember “Rounded fin? e're kicking off the Christmas season with one of Raglan's favourite annual events - Kai and Carols with the lovely folk from St Peter's Anglican Church and special guests.

Come along to hear the roof being raised

by Mighty River Harmony, feel super proud of our fabulous local artists (including regular guests Dave Maybee and Slipped Discs, and Sean Ellison and friends), and dust off those carol singing vocal chords as we all join in on a few of our favourites. Delicious kai to follow with a sausage sizzle and some good old home baking. Entry is by koha but you may never want to leave :-) The venue is St Peter's Church Hall, which is on Bow St opposite Gilmour St. This is a change in venue from recent years when the event has been split between the church and the town hall. Sometimes people find the hall a bit hard to spot from the road but we'll

have signage up and Pumpkin the donkey will be making an appearance again, so people might catch sight of him, too. There'll also be someone down at the church helping lost souls to find their way up to us. Hopefully, they can follow the sounds of glorious singing.

Special guests this year (as in other years) are Might River Harmony - they're a mens barbershop group who come out to us from Hamilton and are the 2017 New Zealand champions in their style. We also have Dave Maybee appearing with Slipped Discs and their special guest, Sasha Kirkwood (a hugely talented young Raglan local).

Sean Ellison is joining us again (as he has in other years) with a group of friends, and we even have a visit from Elvis! I'm also singing a few songs - you can find out more about me at my website, if you want. The nativity story will be told in stages throughout the concert and there will be lots of opportunities to sing along in combined Christmas carols.

Keeping our maunga, Karioi, healthy and thriving It takes a combined effort in predator control. Dedication by community groups, kaitiaki and landowners, supported by Waikato Regional Council and the Department of Conservation (DOC), is helping restore the extinct volcano’s biodiversity, from the mountain to the sea.

POSSUM CONTROL SUCCESS In July this year, aerial 1080 was used on the steep landscape of Karioi. Ground control efforts were used in the 230-hectare Wainui catchment area and private land surrounding the maunga.

The possum population was measured before and after control using a residual trap catch (RTC) monitoring protocol. The results of monitoring before and after the control show the possum population as a percentage. The combined efforts showed the following reduction in possum populations: LEGEND Wainui Stream Catchment DOC AERIAL: 9.47% - 0.90% Conservation Land9.47% - 0% WAINUI Public CATCHMENT: MountNORTH Karioi North Block MT. KARIOI PPCA*: 7.73% - 0.33% MountSOUTH Karioi South PPCA: Block MT. KARIOI 10.73% - 1.22% Area is indicative *Priority Possum Control Area only

HAPŪ MEMBERS HIGHLY COMMENDED Kaitiaki of Karioi were recognised for their work on the maunga in this year’s New Zealand Biosecurity Awards.

The awards is a new Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) initiative that recognises and celebrates those across New Zealand who are doing their bit for biosecurity every day.

Te Whaanga 2B3B2 & 2B1 Ahu Whenua Trust (AWT), of Ngāti Hounuku, was highly commended in the Māori category of the awards for expanding the trapping network on Karioi in 2015, cutting 30km of trap lines with loppers and machetes across 2000ha of steep coastal forest.

This work has allowed an additional 400 DOC 200 traps to be set up as part of the Karioi Maunga project, a community-led project committed to restoring biodiversity from the mountain to the sea.

The AWT team, contracted by DOC and Waikato Regional Council this year to help with possum control on the mountain, also cut an additional 20km of new lines for bait stations on 200ha in the Wainui Stream catchment.

The trust also worked alongside council contractors to fill bait stations and lay traps on 2658ha of private land surrounding the maunga.

Without the work by AWT, and their support and co-operation, landscape scale predator control on and around the mountain would not be achieved.

Members of the Karioi Maunga project, dedicated to bringing back seabirds to the mountain by protecting grey-faced petrel (ōi) that nest on the coastal cliffs, are excited to hear the calls of chicks coming from burrows.

The A Rocha-led project, which got a funding boost of $429,000 from Waikato Regional Council last year, is making its greatest success since starting eight years ago.

Funding from a range of sources has allowed the

Karioi project to grow significantly over the last three years. The council money, from its Natural Heritage Fund, is being paid over four years and will help expand predator control on and around the mountain, including into the gardens of Raglan residents with the Backyard Hub trapping initiative.

Karioi project manager Kristel Van Houte says about half a dozen ōi burrows are active at the moment, with five chicks hatched. Without large scale predator control the chicks would not survive.

“These are the best results we have had in years but still small successes.

“All the work we do also has a huge benefit for forest birds in general, and we hope to be able to bring back kiwi to the maunga one day. Having the regional council, DOC, the Karioi project and the community all working together on predator control will give birds a chance to breed more successfully and restore a unique coastal landscape.”

The project has more than 100 volunteers, 40 who check the traps regularly.

Review: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory I t was with great anticipation we hoped in the car and headed around the mountain to the Raglan town hall to see the live stage performance of Charlie and the Chocolate factory's Saturday night show.

The story is a family favourite, so with quite a lot of knowledge of the story we sat and waited wondering how would this story be told.

We were captivated from the first instance with the lively narrators who held our attention throughout the show.

The staging was clever, simplistic and in parts surprising, letting the very talented and well rehearsed actors shine.

The costumes were once again exceptional thanks to Maddie Alexander and her team.

The scenes moved smoothly as the staging changed and the narrators danced and told the story. The music had us sitting on the edge of our seats waiting to see what was going to happen next.

The Oompa Loompas, Squirrals and Fizzy lifters danced their way

through the show keeping in character throughout, while keeping the energy of the show upbeat.

The main characters were so well cast and were clearly enjoying themselves. The stand out performance of the night was Willy Wonka played by a cool and calm Tom Hannon with his rendition of Wonka so cleverly delivered.

That said I would love to mention every actor in the show if I had more space to write, its a great show when every actor on stage shines.

It was in parts intentionally very funny and it was good to laugh out loud especially when Violet inflated into a giant blueberry. All credit to the costume team for pulling that off.

Well done to Ruth Hare and her crew for putting together such a fun and professionally run show, it was a pleasure to watch and so neat to see our kids embracing the arts.

For a Charlie and the chocolate factory fan I'd say they nailed it.

Waitetuna Wind Farm Trail Run goes the distance C ompetitors in the Waitetuna Wind Farm Trail Run were treated to picturesque scenery and near perfect weather at the inaugural event on Saturday.

Over 300 runners, joggers and walkers took part in a 21km, 10km or 5km trails, which took them through river crossings, bush and farm tracks on the Ormond family farm.

With the Te Uku wind turbines as the event backdrop, the 21km runners passed through some of the turbines and at its highest point were offered stunning views of the Raglan harbour and bar.

The $12,000 raised for Waitetuna

School will cover the costs of sandblasting, and painting the school pool.

Principal Margery O’Connell says the whole community pitched in to make the event a great success.

“It was a fabulous community event and we’ve had lots of positive feedback.”

The 5km was won by Chester Opperman and first equal females Kity McInereney and Cora McInereney, joint winners Armin Schmidt and Josiah Andre took out the 10km with Emie Senekal the first female and Rodrigo Jaca won the 21km and Kirsten Van Dorp was first female.
