Kasm takes call for moratorium on seabed mining to Parliament K asm is awaiting a decision on its call for five-year moratorium on seabed mining.

On Thursday last week, Kasm chairman Phil McCabe and lawyer Duncan Currie made a presentation to the Local Government and Environment Select Committee in Wellington, urging a halt on seabed mining in New Zealand waters until a better understanding of the risks and impacts has been provided.

Phil says the presentation went well but was intense – “I’ve never done anything like that before” – and he heard that the following debate behind closed doors was quite fiery.

“They deferred the decision for a week.

That shows there are differing points of view.

“The guts of what we are saying is in (the Government’s) attempt at rolling out seabed mining in New Zealand waters they

have grossly underestimated the effects of dropping cast mines in the marine environment and the depth of feeling of the people.”

The presentation to the Select Committee was made in support of a petition signed by 6000 New Zealanders.

Phil says the New Zealand Government is leading the way, globally, in its push for seabed mining.

“It’s our risk for the rest of the world. Even the international rules and regulations, how to handle this, are still being written up.”

There are currently moratoria in Namibia and Australia’s Northern Territory because of the high uncertainly of environmental impacts, Phil says.

“Our argument had a lot of logic to it.

We’ve had three applications for seabed mining – two have been declined. One decision clearly stated that the application

was premature because there was not enough information on this. We are waiting a decision on the third application and there are still questions around the environmental effects.

“We need to know more about what’s out there and what the effects are of seabed mining.”

The decision on Trans-Tasman Resources second application to mine the seabed in the South Taranaki Bight has been pushed back a month to the end of July.

“If the application is declined that gives our call for moratorium more weight.”

Phil says Kasm will keep pushing against seabed mining, “especially if this one gets declined”.

“We need to have a national discussion on it. There needs to be an overarching ocean policy, rather then adhoc, which is what’s going on.”

Community Vehicle Trust are winners in Raglan’s eyes

hey may not have won an award but the team of volunteers behind the Raglan District Community Vehicle Trust are number one in the eyes of the many who rely on them to get the outof-town healthcare services that they need.

The trust was one of 14 nominations

for team excellence at Volunteering Waikato’s awards night held at the Atrium, Wintec, in Hamilton on Friday last week.

Trust secretary and treasurer Elspeth Ryan says the number of volunteers at the awards evening was “impressive” and “it made me realise how tiny we were and how few people we have to call on”.

Many of the volunteer organisations have big names behind them, such as Red Cross or Hospice, she says, and their operations “make you feel quite insignificant”.

Although the work they do is anything but.

The trust was started nearly 20 years ago to ensure that Raglan residents can get the healthcare services that they need.

The van has a hoist for wheelchair access.

The majority of residents who use the transit van service are elderly, says Elspeth, and it ensures “they can stay in their own homes and get to their appointments”.

“They have enough to worry about without how to get there and how to come back.”

The trust currently has eight drivers who provide a door-to-door service Monday to Friday, sometimes driving to and from Hamilton several times a day, to anyone who has no transportation to make a healthcare appointment of any kind.

“The dedication is wonderful. The drivers are taking special care of the clients … making sure they are not stressed and waiting for them during appointment times.”

The trust recently signed up its first two women drivers but is always looking for more volunteers.

“Most drivers drive once a week – you really have to have a few extras you can call on,” says Elspeth, whose husband, Terry, is a volunteer driver.

“Recruitment is not easy – there is a reluctance to commit.

“All our drivers are retired otherwise they couldn’t do it.”

The trust has seven trustees, including three who started the service nearly 20 years ago.

“They’re all about 90 now.

Unfortunately we have lost some along the way.”

Elspeth says one of the founders, Fred Gilbert, 90, accepted the certificate at the awards night on behalf of the trust.

“We persuaded him to come and made him go up on the stage to get the certificate.”

brave bunch of swimmers turned out last Saturday morning for the Ray White Raglan mid winter swim, raising funds for the Raglan Surf Life Saving Club.

With $600 in prize money up for grabs, there were plenting of winners on the day.

ocal writer Sarah Johnson treated a crowd of Raglan Area School children to an excerpt from her new book ‘The Spaghetti Giraffe’ last week when the Storylines Festival Story Tour came to town.

And though this award-winning children’s author has been coming to the school nearly every day for 10 years with her own four young sons she had never before been “up the front”, she told the 100 or so year fives to eights – including son Finnbar – gathered in the school hall for the hour-long author/illustrator visit.

Alongside Sarah were fellow children’s writer Mark Sommerset from Waiheke who gave a very animated reading of his popular storybook ‘Baa Baa Smart Sheep’, and South Auckland comic book artist-cumpro wrestler Michel Mulipola who showed examples of his work on an overhead screen.

All three shared how they loved what they did, and how their audience too could aspire to be whatever they wanted.

“I never take myself too seriously,” said Sarah, whose earlier books ‘Wooden Arms’ and ‘The Bold Ship Phenomenal’ can be

found in the school library. “And I get to do what I want as a job.”

Mark, who also plays guitar and sings, agreed: “You can be an author, write songs, surf … whatever you want really.”

Michel – a comic book junkie from way back – told how getting paid for illustrating comics was such a “good feeling”.

The trio’s visit is part of a push by Storylines Children’s Literature Charitable Trust to bring authors and illustrators directly to schools throughout New Zealand.

It has been hosting Storylines Festivals nationwide now for 23 years, but in the cities. This year is the first time authors and illustrators are travelling to schools throughout six regions.

It was Sarah, Mark and Michel who kicked off last week’s South Auckland/ Waikato tour of 26 schools.

Each of them had visited two Waikato district schools on their own that Wednesday morning before coming together at Raglan Area School in the afternoon.

Mark and Michael covered St Columba’s and Crawshaw in Hamilton, then Te Uku and Waitetuna schools on the way out to Raglan.

Meantime Sarah had read excerpts from an earlier book to about 70 children at Whatawhata School and tackled “origami things” – somewhat chaotically, she laughed – as a metaphor for making a book.

Then at Te Mata School she’d got a smaller group of children involved in a play based on her book ‘Wooden Arms’.

Sarah’s now eagerly awaiting the return of ‘The Spaghetti Giraffe’ from the printers in China late next month, having read from a proof copy during her area school visit.

his week the Chronicle caught up with local plumber Nick Heasman and asked a few questions about his business.

Tell us about your business: A locally owned business, I'm a certified plumber and drainlayer and working towards my gasfitting certification. Having lived in this quaint community for the past 10 years, I thought it was about time to move business this side of the divvy.

How long have you been in the business and trade?

I started my plumbing apprencticeship straight out of school at 17 and have been working for various plumbing companies for the last 26 years in Taupo, Auckland, Hamilton and London. I spent the last 10 years with Hamilton Plumbing Company, and have just recently started On Point Plumbing in Raglan.

What do you specialise in?

All aspects of plumbing and drainlaying, in new builds, maintenace, renovations and light commercial work.

What are common issues/problems you encounter on the job?

Kids toys dropped down toilets is a pretty common occurence.

Do you offer free quotes?

Yes we do.

What is the best thing about running your business?

Meeting new people/clients and building relationships in our community and having the time to be more involved in my kids after school sports.

Best piece of advice you can offer customers: Call a plumber before a small leak becomes a major building problem!

Suzy Cato searches for young Raglan radio star A young Raglander has a chance to be a radio star with broadcaster Suzy Cato on her Suzy & Friends show.

Children’s entertainer Cato will be recording an episode of her show at Raglan Community Radio 98.1 on Saturday, July 8, and she is looking for a local kid to join her on air and have a bit of fun.

Suzy & Friends is a Saturday morning kids’ radio show that is played on over 20 local, independent and community radio stations.

“One child will get to sit behind the mic with me in the Raglan Community Radio studio and have a bit of fun,” says Cato. “They’ll get to share with the rest of New Zealand some of the things they like to do.”

Cato says having young guests is one of the highlight of her show.

“I love giving kids the chance to talk and laugh, and experience something new – like being a radio announcer of TV presenter.”

Children who enter to be on the show are asked to write a sentence or two about the kinds of things they’re into, such as hobbies, games, sports, books, movies or musical instruments, etc.

Suzy & Friends producer Trevor Plant says “there’s never a ‘type’ of kid – as long as they’re relatively outgoing and have something to talk about”.

“We’ve had sporty farm kids, thoughtful bookish kids, singers, a songwriter, drama-types, a young surfer-dude and a clarinet player.”

Close shave at vets for dog, horse and their ‘punk’ owner

I

t could have been a scene straight out of the children’s storybook ‘Hairy Maclary’s Rumpus at the Vet’.

But it was actually more a shaggy dog story with a few twists as Raglan identity Petra Yorke, her pet pooch, Tiger, and about six other women – all with dogs barking or yapping excitedly – crowded into the local vets downtown last week for a fundraiser billed as ‘the shortest shave on the shortest day’.

“The dogs are the support crew,” someone shouted above the ruckus as Tiger had her long hair

trimmed from around her head and ears, and then tinges of shocking pink dye added for effect.

Tiger, who’s often seen tagging along when Petra’s out horse-riding on the beach, took the attention in her stride as Clean-A-Dog Mobile Groomers petted and preened her.

Then it was Petra’s turn.

Tonic Hairdressing’s Rachel Bailey wielded the clippers this time – right there in the middle of the vet clinic – on Petra’s long blonde locks.

Petra had earlier confessed to a few “nervous pees” because she hadn’t had a haircut for at least 21 years, and got teary-eyed as her ponytail was lopped off ahead of the No 2 shave.

Six weeks earlier the 53 year old – who runs Surf & Turf Horse Riding Raglan – had vowed to raise money and awareness for the Cancer Society via its online fundraising platform, ‘Everyday Hero NZ: Brave the Shave’.

“I am sure everyone has some sort of connection to someone with cancer,” she said in her fundraising posters around town, sharing the fact her own dad had suffered with it for years.

“Please help by donating as much or as little as you can.”

Petra was despairing early on at having raised only a few hundred dollars, but was proud by the time of the shave on Wednesday – the shortest day – to have upped the figure to $900.

Then friend and zookeeper Sarah Jones stepped up, adding a $100 note to the fundraising pot as the clippers buzzed.

“OMG!” Petra exclaimed midway through the shave, taking a sneak peek at her new pink-tinged ‘angry bird’ hairdo in a photo on vet nurse Donna Rickard’s smartphone. “I look like a punk rocker.”

Finally the shave was finished, leaving Petra a little “shaky” and reaching for her beanie as protection against the cold wind outside.

That’s because the event was not quite over, and about to transfer out of doors where Petra’s horse Lily had her pink-tinged forelock shaved for the occasion.

Their brand is synonymous with our youth, so the boys and their parents are very proud of this very generous gift.
