A

year ago three Raglan art enthusiasts got together and formed a plan to create a group of like-minded people for the promotion of work, social get-togethers and to share ideas and aspirations.

Lois Brooks, a well-known local artist, together with photographer, Richard Gemmel, and the internet savvy Ailene Cuthbertson, got the initial organisation going. Many meetings later they had invited and cajoled a very diverse group of artists to join them. This was the birth of Raglan Art. With guidance from Creative Waikato and an application to Creative Communities, the group was moving towards making an impact on the local art scene. Setting up and

building a web site, and organising the first of two exhibitions at Rivet Gallery were the impetus to drive forward and create a major exhibition at the wonderful Old School Gallery, in Stewart St, over Easter. It contains a diverse collection of works that includes nature and artistic photography, large modern works in acrylics, oils, pen and ink and smaller paintings with a modern twist. Titled ‘Our view Our Voice Our Harvest’, the subject matter is colourful and imaginative well worth a look!

This clever exhibition will be open daily from Friday 30 March through to Tuesday 10 April. 10am - 3pm, including two Creative Market days.

The Raglan Art Group hope that locals and visitors alike will drop in to view the exhibition and have a chat with the artists on duty.

Open to six men and women per Waka Ama team, 18 canoes battled it out for the Strongarm Power title in the 32km race, starting at Maketu with the finish line at Pilot Bay in Mt Maunganui.

“It was surf pretty much the first hour but the conditions started mixing up in the last half of the race.”

Dave says over the last year Nekeneke has developed some depth in the team, with plenty of good paddlers to pull a team together for the various competition around the country.

“We’re punching above our weight out on the water.”

Walking away with the major prize sponsored by Strongarm, the crew will now be kitted out with a new race tee emblazoned with their own custom design.

Although mainly self-funded, the club is thankful to the support of Raglan Surf Emporium for team uniforms.

And not forgetting the shore-bound crew, Team Nekeneke are grateful for the support from their whānau.

The crew are looking forward to helping host and racing in the Whaingaroa Hoe 2018 on Saturday, May 19 in home surf. The race draws a large number of waka ama crews to Raglan to compete in 8km and 24km races.

But take a second look as you head up Wainui Road and, in behind the stall outside Raglan Masterchef Aaron Brunet’s old house, you’ll get a glimpse of the flourishing flower farm that has sprouted over the past two years.

Raglan Buds, as the venture is called, occupies three acres spread across two properties and is the brainchild of good friends and neighbours Kristel Lindfield and Jenny Gaunt.

The block, in a sheltered valley running down to the Wainui stream, is where these young 30-something mothers are indulging a shared passion as small-scale “flower farmer florists”.

They now have a blooming year-round business growing beautiful flowers and designing unique floral arrangements.

“We were already friends, at the mama stage and growing veggies by permaculture,” Jenny recounts. “Three kids each at kindy and school, and thinking ahead ...”

Then they “got the vision” and Raglan Buds was born.

Buds because they were buddies, and of course flowers bud before they bloom. But they admit the catchy name’s also a “cheeky” nod to a certain plant that enjoys some popularity locally.

Jenny and Kristel have a common love of colours and also share an artistic bent, but admit to being completely self taught as flower farmer florists. They found all they needed to

know through books and online courses, and two years on their novel backyards business is literally thriving.

Now they regularly supply bouquets to the local Four Square – which they describe as their staple outlet – as well as to The Shack and Raglan Roast’s Food Department.

But it is weddings which remain their biggest source of business, they say.

The pair also supply the Direct2Florists online shop – with same-day delivery of their freshly picked flowers further afield – run flower workshops from a teepee in Jenny’s backyard and restock each day their roadside stall, which is “popular with surfers and boaties on their way home (from Manu Bay)”.

It’s all full-on and full-time, they reckon, as life revolves too around their hubbies and children.

Kristel and Jenny say the beauty of actually growing the flowers themselves is that there’s no production chain from farm to market to wholesaler. “We can just pop outside and pick a fresh bunch of flowers (for an instant order) which lasts a lot longer.”

The pair grow from seed or tuber, nurture the plants themselves and have the satisfaction of seeing the whole process from start to finish.

“We can grow specific colours for brides too,” Jenny reveals. Kristel, like Jenny dressed for work in a floppy black sunhat and gumboots the morning the Chronicle visited, elaborates: “We have a lot of outof-town brides come (visit) for that personal connection.”

From there they plan what they plant, working the land sustainably with no-dig gardening and permaculture techniques, using neither toxic chemicals nor sprays.

The flowers are usually picked as fast as they grow, Kristel says. “It’s a constant cycle of successive sowing and harvesting.”

They alternate the workload between them, each doing floristry and orders in their studio one week then the hard graft of farming – harvesting, planting, weeding – the next.

The work pattern has evolved naturally.

“It has just flowed,” says Kristel.

With such flexibility one can cover for the other, as happened last month when Kristel held the fort in Raglan while Jenny journeyed to Cuba to meet the local florists of Havana.

She was inspired to go there to see for herself how resourceful the locals were in terms of gardening self-sufficiently, and wasn’t disappointed.

Jenny says flower farming is always interesting and forever changing with the seasons – even in winter.

“We’re playing with nature really,” she adds.

Raewyn and Rangi with their Tuesday class of enthusiastic members from the community.

T

his week the Chronicle had a chat with Rangi Stevenson and Raewyn McLachlan. The couple provide members of the community with a safe and supportive environment to work on their personal health and fitness. Despite their demanding professional obligations, every week they open up their home to provide a fun place to get fit.

“Their exercise routine is fun.

It covers the whole spectrum from cardio to muscle toning, shaping and stretching, and it's never boring as there are several different machines to choose from and they change up their toning and shaping routine all the time. After the class, we get treated to cold, fresh fruit, and can jump in the hot spa overlooking the beautiful wetlands behind their house if we want to.

“But it's really much more than that. It's the camaraderie, the friendship, the kinship with them and all the others that come and train. It's like an extended family, and we really have Rangi and Raewyn's genuine kindness, care and generosity to thank for this. I have been training with them for about a year and a half now, during which time I've met so many great people and made some really warm friendships. And every summer they strengthen this community bond further by treating us "extended family" to a festive hangi.

“I am sure I am reflecting many others' feelings when I say this we are lucky to have them in our community!” Said regular attendee, Linda Bulk.

Can you tell us a little about your backgrounds and the fitness work you do with the community?

We work with a wide range of ages from 15 to the oldest being 75 all with different fitness levels.

In addition to taking 8-10 fitness sessions from our home every week, we both also have full time jobs.

As you know Raewyn is one of our local police officers having worked in Raglan for 12 years. I myself, work for the Waikato D.H.B as a Crisis Support Worker for the last 20 years dealing with people with drug, alcohol and mental health issues.

What motivated you to focus on starting your fitness classes?

We have both experienced family and friends who have passed away due to health issues and are very passionate about the health and wellbeing of our community.

Tell us a little about your classes: We have only recently stopped Ragbo due to changes at the Town Hall, and to focus on our HIIT sessions. More recently, we have also incorporated Circuit training into our HIIT sessions due to the high demand from our participants.

HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training.

Participants are challenged to train on cardio machines at high effort for 20

seconds, then rest for 10 seconds, for around 10-12 hours a week, then go again for 20 seconds, depending on our work schedules. keeping this high intensity training Raewyn has also been right going for around 28 minutes. On January 27 Gareth Jones decided, on his day off, to go and partake in a day of recreational rock climbing. We are not talking the type of climbing we lead our clients on, we are talking full on adventure climbing, otherwise known as traditional climbing. This is where the climber free climbs the rock until they can find an area on the rock whereby they can attach protection to connect their rope to.

Now climbers from all over the world climb in this accepted style.

Gareth likes to push and test his ability which means he likes to climb blank faces with not much protection on offer. Call it high risk, high reward.

On the day he was attempting to climb a notoriously hard climb, he fell three metres onto micro gear that he had placed. He hadn’t place it deep enough in the crack and it ripped out, resulting in Gareth falling another three metres to land on his back and breaking it. Oops - a bad day, but no real difference than somebody having a nasty tumble at the skate park like many this summer.

This is where we’d like to point out that there has been some confusion in our concerned and caring community.

1. None of Raglan Rock’s safety anchors failed as this was nothing to do with the business of Raglan Rock.

The confusion is from mis-information from a newspaper claiming that my safety anchors failed (what they meant is my traditional climbing protection ripped out) Unfortunately, we did have a workplace accident last Wednesday, whereby a client broke a bone in their foot. I cannot comment about this incident at present, as it is under investigation. Workplace accidents do happen (fact), they then need to be investigated and steps put in place to ensure it does not repeat itself. What I can comment on is that it was nothing to do with the failure of our equipment or safety systems but more to do with human error. The local emergency services were amazing and we all worked well together to get our patient out of the canyon and into care.

The media got a hold of it, twisted and embellished the facts to create a dramatic story.

aglan Community Board’s newest and youngest members, Charlie Irvin, Grace Mindoro and Sven Seddon, are looking forward to being the youth voice for Raglan.

The 16-year-olds recently sat in their second meeting since they were elected earlier this year and say the experience is giving them an opportunity to find out how

local government politics work in their town and how they can make a difference for young people in Raglan.

“Together we give the youth of the community a voice,” Sven says. “There’s not enough youth making decisions for the community.”

They all agree that the youth voice has been under-represented for too long and look forward to being a force for change for their generation and the next.

“We can offer our perspective and our viewpoint on community

board decisions and we can offer a new way of seeing things,” Charlie says.

They are also keen to bridge the gap between young and old people and shine a positive light on the great work being done by the younger generation in Raglan.

Keen to support their peers, the three young politicians hope to create a regular youth event, as well as looking into what can be done about work opportunities and after school activities for young people.

aikato-based author Sarah Johnson and illustrator Deborah Hinde have received a Storylines Notable Book Award for their junior fiction title, The Spaghetti Giraffe, it was announced today.

The Storylines awards are presented each year to recognise ‘outstanding books

for children and young people published in New Zealand

by New Zealand authors and illustrators during the previous calendar year’.

This is the second time that Johnson and Hinde have received a Storylines award for their work. In 2016, their junior fiction title, The Bold Ship Phenomenal (Flat Bed Press, 2015), received a Notable Book

Award, and was also shortlisted in the junior fiction category of the New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults.

In 2012, Johnson’s picture book Wooden Arms received the Storylines Joy Cowley Award and was subsequently published by Scholastic New Zealand.

This year’s awards will be presented at the Storylines Margaret Mahy Awards Day, to be held in Auckland on 8 April 2018.

The Spaghetti Giraffe tells the story of muddle-handed cook Mina Cucina’s desire to bake a cake that doesn’t erupt, take flight or explode. Mina Cucina is helped in her quest by a host of quirky animals formed from the debris that collects under cookers over time. The book is the first in a trilogy and was published by Flat Bed Press in 2017. The second book in the series will be published later this year.

Hinde who works as an illustrator from her studio in rural Wharepapa South has illustrated over 35 books for children, including kiwi classic A Kiwi Night Before Christmas (Scholastic NZ, 2003), and bestselling Moo, Moo and Little Calf Too (Allen & Unwin, 2017). She has recently branched out into authoring books of her own.

Johnson, who lives with her family in Raglan, writes chapter, picture and

educational books and stories for children, as well as working as a freelance writer.

Johnson says, “The Storylines Trust does a standout job of supporting New Zealand children’s writers and illustrators. We are extremely grateful to have been chosen to receive a 2018 Notable Book Award for The Spaghetti Giraffe, and are looking forward to the awards ceremony in April.”

Breathe Project educators Bodhi Whitaker and Kat Tucker have brought this message all the way from Australia to share with the Raglan Surf Academy students.

Originally from Gisborne, Bodhi is just the right person to connect with the young academy grommets. The 2009 Rip Curl Raglan Classic Under-19 Champion understands first-hand the pressures of surf competition.

“Not only are they putting pressure on themselves to win, there are expectations from their parents, their teachers and their peers,” Bodhi says.

“That’s where the breathing comes in to help them refocus, centre themselves and improve their performance overall.”

The young surfers are in good company.

Breathing techniques have been used by the All Blacks for many years, Bodhi and Kat say, and the Warriors are using breathing after every try to help them refocus their game to excellent results this season with two wins in a row.

Bodhi and Kat have taken Breathe Project on the road in a tour dubbed Back to the Roots after several years touring Australian schools and organisations teaching mindful breathing, which incorporates a technique that dates back 5000 years.

They’ve been able to connect to New Zealand schools with a little help from Bodhi’s surf connections and a lot of help from social media.

The three-week tour has seen them in 14 schools in Whakatane, Gisborne, Whangamata, Raglan, Auckland and Bay of Islands, and payment by koha means the schools pay as much as they can afford and sometimes payment has come in the way of food baskets and accommodation.

The pair have combined Bodhi’s extensive experience as a Psychosomatic Therapist and yoga teacher, supporting youth and adults through awareness, education and action and Kat’s health promotion, acrobatic training, yoga and youthwork experience to connect with young people in a cool, relatable way.

They work with both the students and teachers so the programme can be easily integrated into the daily school programme.

“It’s about practising mindful breathing when you don’t need it so when you do, it becomes a natural response,” Bodhi says.

Young people are constantly being over stimulated in society today, they say, and the fight or flight response is activated unnecessarily leaving individuals breathing less deeply and more often.

This heightened stimulation turns up stress hormones, heart rate, blood pressure, muscle tension, sweat production, and anxiety.

“We’re trying to break that dysfunction by breathing slower and deeper,” Kat says.

They say mindful breathing is not only for young people and everyone would

benefit from taking some time in their day to practise the simple breathing technique.

“It’s so simple,” Bodhi says. “You could practise it in the morning with a cup of tea or it’s perfect at night just before you go to sleep.”

What with the previous Saturday and Sunday holding our Mixed Pairs Championship, Tuesday being the final night of Twilight Bowls, Thursday being our Premier Event, The Western 1000, Saturday was our Annual Challenge against Pirongia Club and then Sunday was the Post Section of the Open Men’s Pairs Championship. With names like, Pirates, Te Mata 1, Te Mata 2, Alan’s Kings, 123, BB, Des Disciples, R.D., Here for a Beer, Slippery Ball, Just Us, Americanos and Helen Place, there was always going to be that special banter happening, which was flourishing well! After five weeks of challenges, the overall winners were ‘Pirates’ – Bob Carter, Terry Wright and Phil Shea, with Nicole Shea as a reserve player. In second place (and also the winners of the group without a bowler in their team) were Liz, Geoff and Robin.

Meridian Power Up Community Fund Meridian recognises the importance of local communities to our hydro and wind operations.

Meridian’s Power Up gives your community a say on what local initiatives are supported and funded by Meridian. The Fund, managed by a panel of community members and Meridian staff, is about working together to build strong communities.

Te Awamutu, Otorohanga, Tokoroa, two Composite Teams and our local teams. We were treated to a luscious lunch, plus morning and afternoon tea. With music flowing through the air and great comradeship, the atmosphere was splendid for a wonderful day to be had by all. Two teams achieved four wins, while six teams achieved three wins.

Pirongia, skippered by Laurie Roycroft, and Hillcrest, skippered by Ray Finlay, each had 4 wins plus 57 points gained. So, we had to see who had the least number of points scored gains them. Hillcrest had 25 while Pirongia only had 14 which gave then the Winning title. In third place was a composite team, skippered by Ross McGrail, and in fourth place was Dan Winbergs’s team from Te Kuiti. The Top Local Team was skippered by Ross Turner. Congratulations to you all.

ANNUAL PIRONGIA INTERCLUB: It was Raglan’s turn to host this challenge this year. The weather plagued us again, but we did mange to complete two full games with the third one getting rain off, so we called it a day. This challenge has been happening for a number of decades now and is still fought with great valour. There is only one criteria to find the winner and that is the side with the highest points scored over the whole day.

Raglan sneaked in to retain the trophy, 101 points to 97. - that was a bit close. We return to Pirongia next year.

CHAMPIONSHIP MEN’S PAIRS: The Post Section of the Men’s Pairs was held on Sunday March 25. Although the weather forecast was to include a wet front passing through, it actually was a brilliant Autumn’s day, perfect for playing bowls. Playing in the semi-finals were Terry Green and Alan Price who were defeated by Ross Turner and Tim Ryan, with Bill Bond and Jack Peel (who were defeated by Colin Bouzaid and Murray Eddy) playing in the other semi. The final was between Ross Turner and Tim Ryan, and Colin Bouzaid and Murray Eddy - a well challenged game, which saw Ross and Tim gain momentum later in the game to take out the Championship Pairs this year.

Don’t dispose of cat litter or other animal feaces in toilets, drains or stormwater systems – this may spread a parasitic disease to the dolphins • Everyone: Report all sightings to 0800 DOC HOT line (0800 362 468) Remember “Rounded fin? Send it in!”

- Recycle and don’t litter – yet another reason to keep our beaches and public spaces clean of litter: Māui may swallow or get entangled in rubbish!
