Arthritis can affect anyone at any age

Tankersley from Arthritis New Zealand will be giving a public talk at the Raglan Fire Station on the October 12 at 11am.

The talk will be hosted by the Senior Citizens and everyone is welcome to attend.

In New Zealand there are more than half a million men, women and children affected by over 100 different types of arthritis: osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, gout, fibromyalgia and lupus, to mention but a few.

While there is no cure, major symptoms can often be prevented or alleviated by good lifestyle choices, especially when it comes to exercise and diet. Richard will talk about where to get help for families, pain management and treatment.

The Senior Citizens will be assisted by Care and Craft

and The Raglan Support Group. During the past year there has been several visits by different organisations such as Age Concern and the Dementia New Zealand, as well as speakers from local volunteer groups. Last month the Support Group had a visit from a representative from the Raglan Fire Station. As a result it was realised that those with hearing impairment need a different type of smoke alarm. A meeting was then set up with another organisation, Life Unlimited Hearing, to give our elderly with hearing problems the best possible chance in case of a fire.

Thank you to the Raglan Chronicle for helping to keep our senior community informed on debilitating issues such as dementia, arthritis and hearing loss.

Raglan Chamber of Commerce presents on world stage at World Chambers Congress

W

hen the Whaingaroa Environment Centre approached the Raglan Chamber of Commerce to gauge the board's interest in helping them remove single-use plastic bags from the community, there was very little hesitation to support them.

“The Chamber board understands that the economic health and wellbeing of our businesses is influenced by the environmental health of our community,” said Karamea Puriri, administrator for the Raglan Chamber.

“While we unfortunately do not have control of how or when some of our larger infrastructure issues will be solved, the more tangible concerns, like rubbish blowing into the sea, is something within our control to change.”

The Chamber joined with the Whaingaroa Environment Centre (WEC) to create Plastic Bag Free Raglan (PBFR) at the beginning of 2016. PBFR is driven by three team members, a bevy of volunteers and a steering committee that includes representatives from both the Chamber and WEC, as well as Xtreme Zero Waste, Para Kore and the Raglan Community Board.

Together, they set out to make Raglan a single-use plastic bag free community by July of 2019.

The latest project launched by PBFR, was the PBFR Partners Programme, created

by PBFR and the Raglan Chamber. The programme includes a Business Support Booklet and Accreditation Programme– providing businesses with the knowledge and beginning steps to remove single-use plastic bags from their shops and make way for a more sustainable alternative.

The programme is open to businesses who have officially removed single-use plastic bags from their stores, as well as businesses who may not need to provide bags, but support the mission of PBFR. Since the introduction of the PBFR Partners Programme, they have accredited over 60 businesses, including the Raglan Four Square Supermarket, who was the first Four Square in New Zealand to remove their single-use plastic shopping bags and implement a 100%, truly compostable bag.

“Plastic Bag Free Raglan is unique in the sense that it is not a government issued change, it is a project ignited by groups who are at the forefront of the community in various ways. But it is especially unique to see a Chamber of Commerce not just supporting, but playing an active role in the movement,” says Karamea.

“The kaupapa of Plastic Bag Free Raglan is in line with the mission of the Raglan Chamber, which is to support, foster and advocate for vibrant and sustainable

business in Whaingaroa Raglan,” Karamea stated. “That means sustainable business both economically and environmentally.”

But it wasn’t until a few weeks ago that the Chamber realised just how big of an impact their involvement in Plastic Bag Free Raglan has made.

The Chamber was invited by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) to share the work they have done with Plastic Bag Free Raglan, at the 10th World Chambers Congress held in Sydney last week.

The Raglan Chamber is a member of the New Zealand Chambers of Commerce, which is made up of 30 other accredited Chambers from around the country (a member network of 22,000 businesses and growing). With that, the New Zealand Chambers of Commerce is a member and active participant in the International Chamber of Commerce World Chambers Federation, which unites over six million members in more than 100 countries.

The World Chambers Federation hosts the Chambers Congress biannually in different host cities around the world.

“They contacted us about Plastic Bag Free Raglan and asked us to share it as an example project during the Sustainability plenary at the Congress. The plenary focussed on ways in which the public and private sectors could collaborate for more meaningful, sustainable change.”

Karamea travelled to Sydney with 60 other delegates from around New Zealand, and was the sole New Zealand delegate to present at the Congress, which was attended by 1,200 Chamber delegates from around the world.

The Sustainability plenary opened with Gunter Pauli, Founder of the ZERI Foundation and author of The Blue Economy.

“Gunter’s way of thinking is comparable to many of the minds in our own community.

He was the inspiration of the conference for a lot of attendees and it was a huge honour to speak on the same stage as him.”

The plenary also featured Nathalie Meusy, Head of Sustainable Development at the European Space Agency and two other Chambers who shared how they have implemented sustainable practices within their own Chambers, including Pedram Soltani, First Vice President of the Iran Chamber of Commerce, Wendy Northcross, CEO of the Cape Cod Chamber. The plenary was moderated by Peter Townsend, CEO of the Canterbury Employers Chamber in Christchurch.

The presentation of Plastic Bag Free Raglan was warmly received by the room, with expressions of gratitude and interest from many of the attendees.

The director of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce acknowledged the importance of the topic and hopes more Chambers might follow suit. Kenya is one of the most recent countries to pass a governmental ban on single-use plastic bags.

To add to the support, during the opening of the Congress, there was a video message from His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales who remarked on the important role businesses play in creating a more sustainable future for their communities.

Further encouraging the delegates to consider the impacts of climate change and to become more aware of the changes that need to be made to offset the rapid decline of the Earth’s resources.

“Our main street runs straight into the Harbour,” said Karamea. We have shops sitting less than 50 footsteps away from the water… the water is polluted enough, the least we can do is encourage sustainable changes, in hopes of creating a more economically stable and sustainable future.”

“It was an invaluable opportunity,” said of the presentation. “We are one of the smallest Chambers in the world by way of members, if not the smallest. But our community seems to be leaps and bounds ahead when it comes to even exploring sustainable business practices.”

The Raglan Chamber is looking forward to sharing PBFR with the wider network of Chambers and will continue to support the project in its efforts locally, as Raglan moves towards becoming a single-use plastic bag free community.

Raglan women defy years in assault on ‘roof of Africa’

Jean at the age of 64 made it to the top of Africa’s highest mountain while Marie, who’s five years her junior, was only an hour off summiting when altitude sickness stopped her in her tracks.

“But I was happy with [reaching] Stella Point,” Marie told the Chronicle. In the final assault at the end of a week’s climbing the pair trekked seven hours through the night – wearing headlamps – to reach the 5756 metre-high point.

While by that stage Marie “needed oxygen”, Jean carried on to Uhuru Peak which – at 5895 metres above sea level – is the highest of Kilimanjaro’s three volcanic cones.

Pictures in her photo album show a jubilant Jean, arms outstretched, having conquered what is the world’s highest freestanding mountain.

the unassuming Raglan textile artist and grandmother has accomplished over the years.

“Jean was amazing,” says Marie. “Her body just clicked in.”

She was the oldest in their guided group of seven, one of whom had to be stretchered off the mountain halfway through the trek after a moment’s inattention saw him twist his ankle.

Others who were much younger also suffered the nausea of altitude sickness along the way, Marie adds.

Jean, the co-ordinator of Raglan’s biennial Art To Wear show, is modest about her achievement and jokes “the dog keeps me fit”.

While she’s trekked a lot at high altitude, including in the Himalayas, she reckons Raglan’s own Mt Karioi is the best training ground and climbed it in preparation for Kilimanjaro until it got so wet underfoot she was risking injury.

The last three weeks before flying out to Tanzania she’d set off with her dog every morning and afternoon from her barn-style home overlooking Ngarunui on a circuit

which took in the steep Bryant bush track and a run up the steps to the reserve’s stone sculptures.

Marie – who with partner Rob Galloway owns Soul Shoes – trained separately but agrees Mt Karioi is “fantastic” for getting into shape. “Everything is at your doorstep here in Raglan,” she says.

From two months before their departure for Africa Marie made sure she did some form of solid exercise each day, whether it was walking the steps of the Bridal Veil Falls and the Hakarimatas or practising at Raglan Yoga Loft and doing spin classes in a Wallis St garage across the road from her home.

She admits she was worried when Jean got the flu and bronchitis before their trip.

And despite having trekked the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal as a 22 year old, Marie also had some “what-if” moments during the trek around altitude sickness and the freezing nights when temperatures plummeted to minus 12 degrees.

further than the overnight camp spot before returning to it.

“You sleep lower than the height you’ve walked to build up oxygen levels in the blood,” Jean explains.

“And you really push your body to the limit,” adds Marie.

The women have nothing but praise for the 20-odd guides and porters who set up kitchens and tents daily and who, they say, want to see their clients get to the top of Kilimanjaro.

“Everyone has to have a guide and a porter – you can’t freedom-walk any more,” says Jean.

“And they sang to us most days,” Marie adds, replaying a video clip on her smartphone of the tribal dance and song she recorded en route. “They were just gorgeous!”

Marie’s now putting together a movie, perhaps to show at the Raglan Film Festival next year. And Jean’s not finished with altitude climbing yet, mentioning she may well have to satisfy a yen for the heights of Japan.

best experimental and People’s Choice award for Born at Sea. Shannon said her inspiration for the film came from a conversation she had with a Scottish gentleman at The Shack who told her about his grandmother being born on a ship bound for New Zealand and on a return visit to Scotland as an adult the woman became sick and died at sea.

Beautifully shot in Whāingaroa, Shannon told the story through the eyes of

talented local actor Luna Inuwai Petzold-de la Cruz, 9, and gave Born at Sea a Spanish twist.

Shannon was thrilled with the award and says she hopes to make more films using the stunning Raglan land and seascape as a backdrop and perhaps document the adventures of Luna’s younger sister Selva.

An increase in young local talent meant seven films entered in the tamariki and rangatahi categories, with Zara Beeby and Sashka Highway taking out the tamariki section with their documentary about Raglan animal sanctuary Paws Awhile and Frankie Reynolds winning rangatahi with Whāingaroa Through the Eyes of a Child.

Liam Schwarz took out RAFFA emerging talent for The World Left Behind and Frank Bellerby came second with music video Train Track to Oblivion.

Best Documentary went to Pedro Cordova who filmed local environmental initiative Bag it Raglan at work and Billy Lee-Pope a close second with his surf film Back on the Scent.

career in politics is beckoning but Raglan Area School student Liam Dingle knows he has to start small.

The 17-year-old is Raglan Community Board’s first-ever youth representative and he’s keen to lend a younger perspective to the fortnightly meetings.

“A lot of people talk about what they want to change but don’t actually put their hand up to make a change,” he says.

“My role (on the board) is making sure when decisions are made youth are taken into consideration. I will remind them that there are young people in Raglan.”

Liam says he is fortunate to be working with a community board of likeminded people and is looking forward to exploring environmentally-conscious and sustainable options for Raglan.

As well as his interest in sustainability, Liam believes it’s important to deal with the issues affecting our most vulnerable and a central government political career is something he is eyeing in the future.

“We need to look after people, caring about individuals, people without jobs, poor housing or no housing.”

The community board is not his first foray into local politics, he is the current student representative for the school’s board of trustees.

But before he makes his presence felt at the Beehive, Liam has enrolled to study teaching at Waikato University with the view of becoming a primary school teacher.

“I’ve always been good with little kids and people have always said ‘you’d make a great teacher’,” he says.

“Eventually, I want to come back to live and teach here.”

It’s a place the keen photographer loves and is passionate about, and hopes that this passion will help when he sits at the community boards table.

“Raglan is a great place to live, there’s always someone willing to help.”

The Raglan Community Board meets on the second Tuesday of each month, excluding January, April, July, October and December in the Town Hall supper room.

All members of the public are invited to attend a public forum at 1.30pm prior to the 2pm board meeting.

Foodwaste galore!

Raglan you have done incredible work using the new Kerbside Foodwaste Collection service. Over the past 4.5 weeks 6.1 tonnes of foodwaste have been collected and diverted from landfill! Every week the foodwaste has been mixed with fresh greenwaste (also from the community) and put in our Hot Composting Unit (HCU) where it is turning into beautiful Superfood Compost.

If you have received a little reminder in your Kerbside Collection Bin to put your handle in the locked position, you may have thought “but it is locked”. We apologise for any confusion around this but when the kerbside bin handle is sticking up the bin appears to be locked but if it is blown over by the wind or attacked by animals this position it is not secure. Putting your bin handle down at the front of the bin is the best “locked position”.

Hopefully you have found a nice dry and cool home for your packet of compostable bags and your kitchen caddy is sitting nicely on your kitchen bench or under the sink. Look out for the request slip in the pack and when you reach it follow the instructions and our driver will give you a new pack. For those of you who home compost, this service can still be of use to you. You can put meat, citrus, flour, bread, dry pasta, and other food items you may not want in your home compost, in the collection.

COMPOST SALES NEWSFLASH We have some beautiful piles of rich, mature compost up at Xtreme Zero Waste but we have been battling our muddy site to get to it. The good news is we can offer the following: Available this week - unsieved compost, bulk orders only this week. Pick up with your own vehicle or have us deliver. Minimum order 3 cubic metres.

Available 6th October onwards – our bagged compost will be back and also trailer loads of sieved compost loaded onto your trailer. Or, if you have a tow ball, you can do a quick turnaround hire of the Xtreme Zero Waste trailer for $10 (Raglan only).

There’s puawananga (clematis) flowering in the forest, kowhai blooming around town and the sound of pipiwharauroa (shining cuckoo) in the air - all signs that summer is on it’s way and it’s time to get outside and get planting!

Growing food at home is easier than you’d think and here at WEC we’d love to help you with advice, seeds from the Seed Bank and gardening tools from the Tool Library.

There are so many reasons to grow your own food: not only will you eliminate ‘food miles’ (the environmental cost of transporting food) but it’s a lot cheaper to grow your own veges than buying in the shops! Home grown food tastes better too!

Between the spring showers, where the earth is not too wet, give your garden beds some love and attention to get them ready for your summer crops.

There is a space down Wi Neera Street, tucked behind the Raglan Police Station that is ready and waiting for us to create a community garden. This awesome garden space is for the community and needs community input – please help us make it amazing!

Community gardens can become spaces for people to connect, grow food, learn skills and grow together. As the soil is starting to warm up and the planting season is creeping up, now is the time to plan how we can make this space the best it can be.

Join us at the gardens from 10am -12pm on Saturday the 14th of October to plan how we’re going to work together and how this space can grow this summer.

We’d love to hear what you’d like to see in the gardens, how you’d like to be involved and what you’d like to get out of this project (crops to browse? skills/workshops? a place to watch crops grow? shared gardens vs allocated plots? etc etc). WEC wants to work with everyone interested in helping this space grow - individuals or organisations are welcome!
