n behalf of the Senior Citizens and all the groups that benefit from this column I would like to thank the Raglan Rest Home and Hospital for sponsoring the articles.

Depending where in the world you were born, the first of the ‘Baby Boomers’ are now pensioners. The first generation to be given an official title, they were born between 1946 and 1964. Those born prior to that era, ‘The Silent Generation’, are now in their 70’s and 80’s. Before that the ‘Greatest Generation’ are approaching 100 years old, their motto; ‘use it up, wear it out, make do, or do without’. Those born at the beginning of 20th century are called ‘The Interbellum Generation’. It is Latin; ‘inter’ meaning between and ‘bellum’ meaning war) and most have now passed on.

More recent age groups are referred to as ‘Generation X’ (35 to 50 year olds), ‘Millennials’ (18 to 34), and ‘Generation Z’ ( teens and younger). For the new generations issues are much the same as in the past: inequality, poverty, over-population, wars, dictators, natural disasters, with modern technology and plastic bags thrown into the mix with next month being Plastic Free July too.

Keeping Seniors connected with what was going on in Raglan was the original aim of the column as well as supporting Senior groups. Since then, new groups have been established and there are many who have helped behind the scenes, not least the staff at the Raglan Chronicle, particularly Maki who has been so supportive.

Proof reading, and checking dates and venues are correct as well as keeping to a dead line are all a part of the challenge. Friends and family have often chipped in with ideas and proof reading, while Senior Technology and the staff at The Raglan Community House have often helped with computer glitches.

Keeping the terminology ‘politically correct’ has proved challenging as vocabulary is ever changing. Some readers did not like the use of the word ‘elderly’ when applied to ‘older people’ but a recent poll showed that 80% of society find the term acceptable. Meanwhile, it appears some of the younger folk do not like to be referred to as ‘kids’.

arking at Joyce Petchell Memorial Park was the hot topic at June’s Raglan Community Board meeting.

Waikato District Council staff presented two proposed designs, including sealing a large area at Joyce Petchell Memorial Park for 14 angle and four campervan parks and another for alterations to the fire station carpark layout – the parking is part of the museum resource consent conditions.

Board chair Bob MacLeod says the community board have asked the council to go back to the drawing board over the Joyce Petchell proposal and for Stewart Street to also be considered for angle parking.

“Parking at Stewart Street has been discussed since the new museum was built in 2007. We are suggesting to them that they put their money in Stewart Street.”

Waikato District deputy general manager service delivery Roger MacCulloch says they will be talking to archaeological and cultural stakeholders before the Joyce Petchell design is finalised and work starts, as well as addressing potential effects of water run-off from the sealed car park by

using rain gardens to help remove pollutants and slow down storm water flows.

Other recommendations up for consultation include paid – with an exemption for Raglan residents -and angled parking on Bow Street, Wi Neera Street and Wainui Road.

MacLeod believes paid parking will help alleviate parking congestion and generate revenue earmarked for Raglan community use.

Council recommends a minimum of four machines in Bow Street and two in Wallis Street at a cost of around $10,000 plus a monthly maintenance cost and additional staffing costs to collect the cash.

All proposals are still up for discussion and the board will be holding public workshops, talking to local groups and organisations, as well as opportunities for people with an interest in parking to join the Raglan Naturally transport focus group.

Council will start work on the Papahua/ Kopua car park extension soon, which will add 27 car parks with a similar amount of space available in a barked overflow car parking space funded from the parks and reserves budget.

Boat Parking

T

he council are also looking at paid parking for boat trailers at boat ramps with the possibility of a permit for boaties to still use the 48-hour parking at the wharf.

Raglan Sportfishing Club secretary Sheryl Hart says their members were not opposed to user pays but they would only want to pay a reduced fee.

“Raglan Wharf is a working ramp and has been since about 1938. It was put in by the Hartstone family and the Kopua boat ramp was built by the club.

When you help build and look after an asset it’s a bit of a joke to have to pay to use it.”

Hart says the wharf has the only ramp that can launch all vessel sizes as Kopua boat ramp has issues with bridge clearance and low tide.

Annual backyard science survey is saving the birds

ecome a citizen scientist and have fun researching the birdlife in your backyard with the Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research New Zealand Garden Bird Survey this year.

The annual survey takes place this year between Saturday, June 30 and Sunday, July 8, and birdwatchers from all walks of life are invited to take part. Simply pick a day, grab a comfy chair, sit back for an hour and record the birdlife.

Whaingaroa Environment Centre coordinator Stacey Hill says the aim of the garden bird survey is to learn more

about New Zealand garden birds and track population changes, which can signal environmental changes.

“The survey only takes an hour of your time. I think it’s a great way for families to take some time to sit in the garden, connect with their environment and watch the birds – it’s really grounding.”

Local conservationist Danny Parker has come on board to support the survey in Whaingaroa after noticing changes in his own backyard birdlife following pest control work.

Keen birdies are also invited to join a bird identification workshop this Saturday, June 30 from 3-5pm at the community gardens behind the police station in Wi Neera St. WEC has enlisted local bird expert Mark Hornby to share his avian knowledge with locals eager to make a difference for the birds.

Stacey says the bird identification workshop will help people interested in participating in the survey to identify their backyard birds.

“Most people will be able to identify a tūī and fantail but they might struggle with some of the other species. Mark is a great source of knowledge.”

The environment centre has check sheets available to assist with the survey and Stacey says attending the bird ID workshop is not a requirement to participating in the survey but it will be a lot of fun.

Birds are 'backyard barometers'

M

anaaki Whenua Landcare Research scientists believe our neighbourhood birds act as "backyard barometers" to the health of our environment and say declining numbers of our most common backyard bird the silvereye may be due to the warmer winters brought on by climate change.

Since the survey began in 2007, the silvereye’s population has declined nationally by nearly half and among other native species, tūī counts have shown a slight increase over the 11 years, while fantail and bellbird’s population have remained the same.

Researchers say even the decline of introduced birds is signalling change in our urban and rural environments we need to better understand.

Coffee addict finds fix: an app for on-the-go society

N

ecessity – the saying goes – is the mother of invention and that’s certainly the case for Raglan-bred Wes Moir when it comes to his allimportant regular caffeine fix.

“I was a customer who needed a coffee but didn’t have time,” he told the Chronicle of how he got the idea for his new ‘On the Go’ ordering app, which is now being tested at Brown Lightning Bros. Raglan Roast in Hamilton and is likely to be available soon on this side of the divvy.

It’s a purpose-built app designed to make better use of time, he explains, which just happens to be perfect for pre-ordering

coffee. No wait, no queues, just set the pickup time and make payment while you’re on the go.

“I hope to get it into Te Uku Roast Office around August,” says the 27 year old who grew up in Kaitoke Street but has been based for some years now on Auckland’s North Shore.

Brown Lightning Bros’ Te Rapa cafe – where an iPad is set up on the counter to process orders – has been a “great” pilot location or platform over the past couple of months, Wes says, highlighting the app’s good points and areas in which it can be improved.

business coffee providers is “ready to take to mainstream New Zealand”, he reckons.

Wes researched the project and has focused in the past 18 months on getting his app built, but now wants to shift focus to the business side of things. “I plan to target hard in Auckland,” he says, citing corporate buildings with large cafeterias below where workers haven’t got 15 minutes to wait in line to get a good coffee.

He’s invested a lot of time and money in the venture, putting in 20 to 30 hours per week on top of a 40-hour working week to bring his idea to reality.

Even then he didn’t build the app himself, he points out. While he “came up with the concept” and created his own company, Simply Pre-Ordering Solutions Ltd, techies at Almond digital product studio in Karangahape Road were commissioned to develop the program.

But it took double the expected build time and double the original budget.

Despite having had to stump up with the extra costs “off my own bat”, Wes is passionate about ‘On the Go’ and how it has fulfilled his vision to make ordering coffee simple.

Raglan Roast’s Tony Bruce, who is about to open his thirteenth coffee outlet in the Auckland suburb of Kingsland, says he’s known Wes since he was a youngster and believes his app could well “fly all around the world”.

It’s not the first time a local kid has come up with a successful business idea, he adds.

He sees the app as suiting some coffee outlets more than others – and the Te Uku Roast Office as ideal for this sort of technology because of its large commuter clientele.

Ahoy artist Gila Cohen was inspired to start the creative get-together for craftspeople, from the novice to the

experienced, as a way to share their skills or to learn a new skill.

“We want to create a space for people to feel comfortable learning a new skill, completing an unfinished project or starting one they haven’t even started yet,” she says.

A crafter for over 20 years, Gila loves sharing her own creative skills with

others and in the first session she will be showing people how to make a coiled bowl.

“I get a lot of pleasure teaching and it’s such an honour being able to share the skills I have.”

Resources for creating the coiled bowl will be available on the night but Gila says people can bring their own wool, raffia or thread and darning needles.

A great believer in keeping traditional crafts alive, she hopes to get in touch with others in the community with a creative skill they could share.

“There’s a lot of people out there making stuff at home, it could be someone knitting or crocheting who could share their talents at the gatherings.

If we don’t continue sharing these skills they will die out.”

The informal creative gatherings are open to all ages on the first Monday of the month and participants can stay for as long as they like - the 5pm start and 8pm finish is just a guideline.

“If people are engrossed in what they are doing I’m happy to keep going,” she laughs.

The Ahoy Creative Crew will be providing soup on the first night and Gila says entry by koha will help fund the next session - bring a bowl and spoon.

Karioi Classic is just around the corner

ext month on Sunday,, July 29, Raglan will be cycling capital of New Zealand again for one day.

The ninth edition of the iconic winter cycling event will offer three distances of grinding metal roads around our beautiful maunga - 43km, 57km and 85km.

Registrations are coming in nicely. We are hoping to exceed last years’ numbers and so far it seems to be going that way.

This year, we are going the extra mile and adding a Spanish flavour to our event. Each competitor gets a free paella meal after the finish, catered by chef Ferran from Paella Catering Raglan.

On race day there will be a few road closures in place till 2pm.

Notices will be send to local residents and posted in the Chronicle and social media.

I loved the school’s mission statement ‘Expanding Hearts and Minds’, as well as the school values. The school is in a beautiful part of the country, with fabulous natural resources. Plus, I’d heard there were some pretty great students and teachers at the school.

What do you like about Te Uku so far?

The welcoming community and working alongside enthusiastic teachers and students.

Is there anything else that you would like to say?

I’m looking forward to continuing the focus on ‘Expanding Hearts and Minds’, in a way that is unique and exciting, making Te Uku School one of the best places for students to grow and learn.

A

chimedes was an inventor, problem solver, and mathematician. He is known for saying, “Eureka!” when he discovered the solution to a difficult problem.

This term we got to be inventors.

Our group had to create a weatherproof marble run that had slopes, changes of direction, drops, weights and fidget spinners.

It was really tough. Some of the materials didn’t work very well, sometimes we couldn’t agree on what to do, and there was A LOT of trial and error. After six weeks our blood, sweat

and tantrums resulted in a master piece of a marble run.

Alicia and Riley invented something totally different. They had decided to solve a problem in our school; how to get everyone learning about permaculture. Their solution was to design a permaculture club house that had grapevines, a turf roof, garden boxes, and a comfortable learning space.

The next step was to write a proposal for the Board of Trustees.

Now they are waiting to see if their invention can become a reality.

The Junior Discovery at Te Uku decided that it would be an exciting place to learn about land forms. Guess what; they were right! We thought that it would be best if Vincent, one of the Junior Discovery students, described the trip in his own words.

worm cave. It was called Waitomo Caves. We had to drive there. I went with Grayson. We laughed and smiled in the car. We sang in the caves. It was amazing. It gave me a fright when they turned the lights off. After we went to the Ruakuri Walk there was this balcony.

There was a huge waterfall. Then we went to a museum. We saw a frog. We watched a movie and then me and Grayson got an ice cream. It was called Goody Goody Gumdrops.

T

he secret’s out, children can be teachers too. Year 7 and 8 students have been teaching each other how to improve their ball skills through a variety of sports.

To begin with we had to get into groups and plan three lessons. We chose soccer. We planned warm ups and skills games, organized the gear, and set up each session. We also had to teach the rules. For the final lesson

students got to play a game.

We found out that being a teacher can be really hard, because sometimes people don’t listen and you have to explain things again. However, it was fun being the leaders and sharing what we knew.

This week the last group is going to teach us the skills for playing hockey.

n Saturday, June 2, and Sunday, June 3, students and families from across the district competed in the 2018 Raglan Art to Wear show.

This is a competition in which people from all over Waikato and some even further, create a costume or outfit that fits into one of the many categories for a chance to win some big bucks. The categories this year were: Heads Up-Mystery Box, Upcycled, Kaitiakitanga, Paua Power and Circus Circus.

There were so many creative young people who participated and the outcome was amazing! The tickets were sold out in a matter of minutes. The hall was absolutely packed and the lines to enter took up a whole street! The competition was so tough but the judges came to a decision and the results for Te Mata are: Paua Power 2nd: Chloe, Ella and Maria with their piece Kua of Moana.

Circus Circus, highly commended: Isla Limbert with her piece Candy Floss and in 1st place we have: Nina, Molly and Milly with their piece Judy Big Booty.

And the other results can be found in a previous Chronicle. The performance gets better every year and, I’m sure that in 2020 the costumes will blow the socks off of the judges.

Congratulations not only to those who won but to those who tried. I’m sure your families are very proud of you.

Passion Friday: Animal Club

E

very Friday at Te Mata we celebrate Passion Learning Friday. Passion Friday is an array of different activities ranging from Gardening to Animal Study Club to Science to Cooking to Sign language, Board Games and Choir.

Thank you to Sandra Jonas, Dayna Henley and Louisa George, who are all parents, taking time out of their day to help provide these amazing activities.The students are loving it and the school has been getting lots of parent/teacher help. All the students, teachers, parents etc are enjoying it and everyone has been giving positive feedback about Passion Friday.

principal Fiona Gott introduced it to Te Mata this year. The past few weeks have been an interesting experience for everyone.

The people in Animal Study Club had a visit from Nic Wylie from the Backyard Hub, she came and gave them a talk about trapping and protecting the Grey Faced Petrel, they also had a visit from a couple of very friendly horses and everyone else in all the other activities, have been discovering new things and sharing their knowledge with others.

Passion Friday will hopefully stay at Te Mata for a long time and maybe we will have some more activities. Perhaps maybe some of the other schools might even like to try doing it.

National Young Leaders Day 2018 n the May 14, 2018, four Year 8 O students from Te Mata School attended the National Young Leaders Day at Claudelands Arena in Hamilton.

The day included motivational talks from great New Zealand leaders, music, games and activities. There were people who spoke and gave inspiring talks like: Jono Naylor, a former member of parliament, Lisa Tamati, an ultra-marathon runner who has run over 300km, Amanda Wilson who was on the TV show Keeping up with the Kaimanawas, with her two sisters Vicky, and Kelly Wilson, and finally, there was Riley Hathaway, who is on the kids’ TV show Young Ocean Explorers and has been on lots of underwater adventures with her dad and had incredible encounters with whales, turtles and many other animals.

All the students that went from Te Mata thought Riley Hathaway was the most inspirational and interesting speaker. “She is helping save our oceans,” said Ella Robbs.

Te Mata School students attended the National Young Leaders Day held at Claudelands Arena in Hamilton back in May this year.

t the start of this year a teacher by the name of Annie Stewart came to teach at Te Mata School.

Annie currently teaches the year two and three students, so we thought we would interview her and see how she’s getting along at Te Mata School.

Q: How long have you been a teacher for?

A: 5 years.

Q: What made you want to be a teacher?

A: I am very passionate about the minds of young people and wanted a job where I could make a difference.

Q: Where did you teach before Te Mata School?

A: Auckland Kaurilands.

Q: What did you like about Te Mata School for you to want to teach here?

A: I was moving to Raglan and Te Mata School was close to my home.

Q: What made you want to teach year two and three?

A: I used to teach year five and six, so it was a challenge to change to teaching year two and three but challenges are good in careers.

Q: What’s different about Te Mata School from your last school?

A: Auckland Kaurilands had eight-hundred kids and only went up to year six, plus there was more year five kids than all of Te Mata School kids combined.

Q: What are your hobbies or sports that you do in your free time?

A: I love surfing - it’s one of my favourite sports to do. I also like taking my boat out, and walking.

Q: What did you do prior to coming to Te Mata School?

A: I used to be a surf coach and did women's surf and yoga retreat camps in Nicaragua and before that I lived in Portugal.

Q: If you didn’t end up as a teacher what was your “Plan B”?

A: I had an interest with creeks and water so I probably was going to be a Marine Biologist. I also had a dream to work with whales.

On June 8, instead of actually walking from Cape Reinga to Bluff, they looped around a fullsized rugby field up to 67 times each (that’s half a marathon!). The reason they did this walk was to fundraise for sports gear, which the syndicate

were seriously keen to get.

The day started with lots of cheer. Nearly everyone was in fancy dress, including the event organiser, Matua Jason, whose Mexican outfit was topped off with pink socks and a pink moustache. For the first few rounds, students eagerly ran laps for once! However, after a dozen or so of their 67 laps, moans and groans began to fill the air. Then along came the free hot dog guys and the mood was back on track once again.

Not everyone walked. Quite a lot of people ran and even cycled around the field. Two students really stood out; Harrison Meek and Xander Warren, who completed over a whopping 100 laps each! “My breathing was fine but my legs were killing me,” commented Xander.

To help walk the required total of 6096 laps, we needed help. Students from across the entire school and some community members donated laps during the day helping accomplish the fundraising goal, reaching a total of over $2500.

This will go towards PE gear that students can access during break times.

Many students from different age groups took part in this event, and were eager to support the children of South Sudan. The students were to experience 40 hours of losing something that they usually take for granted, and by doing so, getting a taste of the bitter reality and the opportunity to empathise with these children.

Student Olive Peart explained what drove her to participate, “We wanted to see how it felt to live like them every day.” There was a great variation in what each student sacrificed in the 40 hours. Joel gave up talking, Manoa gave up furniture, and Olive and Isobel gave up food.

Many of the students felt that it was very difficult to complete the famine, with year five participant Isobel Peart stating, “The hardest part was looking at all the food and not being able to eat it.” The students raised over $900 for the children in need, and this amount of money is definitely enough to make a difference to innocent lives.

WAITETUNA SCHOOL NEWS National Young Leaders’ Day Indulge Yourself in Mindfulness

Students from Waitetuna School attended the NYLD event in Hamilton.

YLD is an amazing programme set up for intermediate and primary school children looking to be leaders and being inspired by them. There were many inspiring voices with their amazing stories and incredible adventures.

One particular speaker that really inspired me was Riley Hathaway, with all of her stories about how she wants to help the world as well as going to school.

She started her journey from a school project when she was 12 and turned it into a website and a desire to help sea life with her campaign called Young Ocean Explorers.

This programme has really inspired

us as a class, to pick up every bit of rubbish we see as it really will pay off. After all, who doesn’t like going snorkeling and diving and seeing all of the awesome fish being able to swim freely in their natural habitat?

“I liked listening to people talking about their struggles and what they had to go through to get the glory,” said Max. Xavier added, “I really enjoyed the music and awesome vibes.”

Cory said, “It was really inspiring and I enjoyed seeing everyone having a good time.”

“I learnt that we should always give things a go even if they seem hard,” remarked Eliza.

Muddy Madness

Waitetuna students got muddy during Term 2.

ud, mud glorious Mud that is what Term 2 is all about! Starting with the School Cross Country, where from the ages of 5 to 13 we run through tough mud and rivers.

The mud and the rivers were up and over our knees this year and very cold!

Unfortunately, the Waitetuna Inter School Cross Country was cancelled, but all our training was great for the Tough Guy Girl Mud Run that Waitetuna School enters and supports. We had 7 year olds up to 13 year olds enter this fundraising challenge (Child Cancer). Mud, mud and more mud! There were about 600 runners and

it was a big day. Here are some comments from our students: “The track felt a lot longer than we thought it was, I liked it because it was for charity. We liked the day because it’s well organized and everyone also loved the support” said Corey.

Actually this term has been about supporting good causes and becoming aware, with the Mud Run, Prader Willis syndrome where we all wore orange in support and Anti Bullying or Kindness Day (as we called it) where we made and wore pink tie dye T- shirts. This also linked into our mindfulness program.

e have started doing mindfulness every Monday. We practice it throughout the week, to help us to maintain our focus and balance our inner selves.

Whaea Mariella leads us through the pause, breathe, smile program. Here is what some of the students have said: ~Mindfulness helps me to focus before I am running (Cory) ~Mindfulness is awesome - I didn’t know if it would help me in my life but it does ~Mindfulness helps me de-stress before my spelling (Riley) ~It helps make your mind creative (Louis) ~I am beautiful, I am intelligent I am happy.

We don’t only use mindfulness at school, we also do it at home. Here is what some of the parents said:

~ “I love that you do this with the children, and I was talking about types of strength. My son told me that being strong in your mind makes you feel happy, and calm, and greatful”. (Olivia)? ~ “Waitetuna you’re absolute gold! My child demonstrated how to make a mindfulness jar and shared and included in a video chat with her niece in the Netherlands” (Ellen). “It makes you feel calm when you look at it,” (Senna). ~ “My child loves mindfulness, he told us in the car the other day, he thinks that all the high schools should do mindfulness to help the teenagers with their crazy thinking.” (Lizzie) We practice mindfulness on a Monday to help us become calm and centered at the start of the week.

After School Care Kicks Off at Waitetuna School

E

very Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon Waitetuna children now have the option to stay at school while parents finish their day at work.

"With many working parents at Waitetuna and a growing role, our school has decided to offer an After School Care service three days a week,” says Principal Margery O'Connell.

After School Care is led by a local woman, and grandmother of two local children, Nicky Clark, who really enjoys running the programme.

“I’ve started to get to know the children. We play games, read books, bake cookies, do crafts, play outside and have the occasional movie afternoon. It's their time off, so they have a big say in how we fill our time,” says Nicky.

“The children love it, even to the extent they are

sad when it's not an After School Care day.”

These are some comments from some students that attend ASC. Cory: I go 1 day a week. I like doing sports.

Finn: I go 3 days a week. I like playing games.

Sofia: I go 1 day a week. I like making huts with Finn.

Seren: I go 2 days a week. I like doing drawing and art.

Senna: I go 3 days a week. I like doing drawing and art too.

Riley: I go 1 day a week. I like making forts with chairs.

Parents are quite happy with the new service as it allows them a little more flexibility to juggle work commitments and travel time.

Plastic Free July.....let’s make it Plastic Free Raglan!

What a great time to look at your use of single use plastics. Plastic Free July is a worldwide event with more than 150 countries participating in reducing their plastic usage for a month. We say why start on July 1st and finish on July 31st. continue those world changing habits for the years to come.

Xtreme and WEC have partnered up, we are here to offer advice, give you tips and support you in your plastic free journey. We want to work with you all, towards a single use plastic free Raglan.

What is single use? Items such as your takeaway coffee cups, plastic straws, water bottles, plastic cutlery and anything that is used once and then disposed.

For example the average lifespan of a takeaway coffee cup is less than a single use plastic bag, coming it at under 7 minutes per cup. In NZ we use 295, 000,000 (yes 295 MILLION) takeaway cups a year, most of these end up in landfill (Packaging Forum NZ 2018 stats).

These single use plastic items are landfilled, are in our oceans, in our water ways, are killing our marine life and becoming part of our food chain. The great news is, all of these items also have a reusable, accessible and environmentally friendly alternative for you to use instead.

During July, WEC and Xtreme ask you to please think about your purchase and actions. Invest in a Keep Cup for your coffee/teas, a metal drink bottle and enjoy your beverage without a single use plastic straw.

Kana Vinaka wins at Gourmand World Cookbook Awards

C

ontemporary island cuisine cookbook, Kana Vinaka was awarded the winner in the Best South Pacific Food Culture category at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards 2018.

A

short beginner's cooking course is being offered starting on Tuesday, July 10, at the Raglan Community House.

Kana Vinaka, 'What Every KiwiShould Know About Good Kai' is a 3-week course, with classes to be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6-9pm, will be off ered to anyone in the community that wants to learn the basics of good cooking and using local ingredients.

'Kana Vinaka' is a Fijian term that means 'eat well' or 'good food' and is the ti tle of long-ti me local resident, Colin Chung’s new cook book, a not-forprofit initiative to get locals everywhere to eat healthy, cook well and learn to use their own local produce, instead of importi ng or eati ng processed foods.

The course will cover all the basics of cooking, preparati on and techniques to help those in the community who need these skills to bett er feed themselves and their families or those who are just

looking to improve their basic skill set in the kitchen.

This is not a gourmet cooking course, but is geared to help take the mystery out of making a good meal and to make cooking fun and interesting.

A $5 koha to pay for the ingredients each night is requested and everyone will share in the tasting. Spaces are limited and follow up courses are planned.

“As the sole entry from Fiji and the Pacific amongst 215 countries and regions, this is a wonderful recognition and a testament that we can do contemporary style cuisine in the Pacific using the abundant supply of fresh local produce,” said renowned chef and author, Colin Chung.

The cookbook which was launched in April 2017 “has simple recipes and concepts and shows the importance on what people at home can do with local produce,” said Mr Chung.

He added that “It really makes a difference if we ate local as opposed to imported goods and made correct choices even at home. We should stay away from processed food and if we do that there wouldn’t be so many non-communicable diseases (NCDs) which is rife in the Pacific, and that makes a difference.”

The awards took place from May 26 -27, 2018 in Yantai, China.

Give it a go. It can feel a bit like trying to herd cats sometimes, but there is great support from everyone - no experience necessary!

THE BIG INTERVIEW catching up with Raglan's local movers and shakers Q+A with Jake Fyalka

T

his week we spoke to Raglan Area School IT technician and rubbish crusader, Jake Fyalka.

Ok let's start from the beginning, Jake, because there are so many new people in town who don't know your story.

Where were you born and raised?

I was born in Tacoma, Washington and spent the first 25 years of my life near there.

When did you come to Raglan?

I came to New Zealand March 23 2002.

I was in Raglan the same day I landed.

How did you end up choosing Raglan as the place to settle?

I came to Raglan because I had a job lined up here. I met someone in Tacoma who was a friend of a friend. He had a very successful internet service provider in the states and was moving to Raglan to start up an ISP here. He was aware of my skillset and offered me a job in Raglan. He had a kiwi business partner named Kate and the two of them formed a business called RaglanNet. We ended up renting out the old lawnmower shop which is now Fallenfront.

Additionally, you have an IT business and help out many local businesses. What came first, teaching or the business?

Do you enjoy this line of work?

I love my job. I really enjoy helping people, and I hope they do appreciate the hard work it takes to maintain such a changing business, as Raglan Computer Services has to be in order to stay profitable in such a small town. The school was one of my first clients and the principal before Mr Cox hired me from RaglanNet. When I was first hired I worked 30 hours at RaglanNet and 20 hours a week at school.

One of the deals at the school was that my time could be

destroying some days. I decided the stress wasn’t worth it and to move on. I now only help with computer questions and IT support.

I've also heard that you are offering computer education to community members. What does that involve?

I had an offer from Nenya at Xtreme Zero Waste to do some adult education at the Community House as a paid job a few years ago (we’re into our third year now). After six months it became pretty obvious that the class wasn’t really what the community needed so I quit billing and getting paid for the job and instead did it for free. Now the class is more like a support group that I head. We all meet on Thursdays at 2pm at the

When did family come along for you? How do you balance all these undertakings with family life?

We started having kids at 35. Family is always number one and being able to work at different times has really helped us succeed. I also have an amazing woman who is a great mum and teaches at the school. Our schedule gives us tons of time to be with our sons.

Having Marcus help me as well, has been great for business - having someone you can trust shouldering some of the load helps heaps.

What are you really passionate about for this community and where would you like to see improvement?

The school is number one always for me. After that I’d have to say the people in general.

I can’t think anything really needs improvement. I think change is the last thing Raglan needs. I think we need to spend more time respecting what is already here instead of always thinking of how we can better something so close to perfection.

Tell us about your role at the RAS school? What does it involve?

My job at Raglan Area School is the IT Technician.

It involves maintaining a 6 server 250 computer network.

Also, I support teachers, and students’ learning.

What's great about your role there and working at the local Area School. What has been achieved there over the years in terms of technology progress?

People are the greatest thing. Raglan’s student population is eclectic, and so much is expected from us at the school as far as our jobs go. I really enjoy my job - it is always different and dynamic. Progress as far as technology goes: our infrastructure is sound and we have over 30 wireless access points throughout the school with a fibre backbone pumping out 100 megabit internet that fully blankets the school.

Our surf academy offers digital coaching using filming and overlays of professional surfing. Our photography department teaches off Adobe Creative Suite with Lightroom and Photoshop. In our junior area we have been working with Google Docs, Chromebooks and tablets. The school, as always, is a challenge with so

tired of listening to the moaning about 1080 and one day challenged people to stop complaining and put work into the alternatives instead. I asked Bexie online and kept bugging her until she made a line from the bush park to the kite boarding beach for me. It takes a couple of hours a month and this month I got 12 rats in my 16 traps. I was slack this month and hadn’t checked my traps in 5 weeks and 5-weekold dead rats are pretty gross, but still the job has to be done. I’ve killed a couple of stoats as well in my traps and that is about as rewarding as it gets.

If you could go back would you do anything differently ?

Not much, I really like where Ive ended up, everything happens for a reason. made up if I had to take care of an emergency in town.

We are always impressed with how quickly you respond and rescue us. How much of your time does this business take?

You were involved in the notice board?

How did this come about? What was the experience like of managing this?

It wasn’t me that started it, but I did help maintain the early parts of the Raglan Notice Board on Facebook. I volunteered to be an admin and from that things just kind of took off. We got to help a ton of people on the board, but it was soul

Community House. We spend the hour fixing people’s problems, helping people with every day IT questions that they don’t understand, like how to use internet banking, how to use their phones, and how to order things online. It’s ever-changing and really rewarding. The Community House is an awesome place, and I’m pretty proud of what we’ve accomplished there.

And you'd think that would be enough on your plate, Jake, but I also hear that you trap rats in your spare time. Tell me about this. What's involved? Why do you do it?

What are your plans for the future?

Any other projects on the go?

I just want to be the best dad I possibly can, teaching my sons that the can make a difference to his surrounding environment.

As for other projects, I have been helping Lee Knight clean up SH23, as its disgusting.

I don’t think I can squeeze much more into my life as far as other projects of my own go, nearly every day is full. If I could make another day happen in the week Id love to take up cheffing. I love preparing food for people and don’t know why but I think most IT people dream of being a chef in another life. This school holidays Im going to learn how to be a better baker (See next week's issue for a full story on the rubbish clean up crew).

KARIOI CLASSIC ROAD CLOSURE

We wish to inform you that there will be a road closure in place on Sunday 29 July 2018 from 7am til 2pm on the following roads for the annual Karioi Classic Cycling event.

Whaanga Rd, Ruapuke Rd, Waimaunga Rd, Tuturimu Rd, Matawha Rd, Waimaori Rd and Te Hutewai Rd. The road closure is a rolling closure starting from Whaanga Road (Te Tuhi Rd) and ending at Te Hutewai Road (Extreme Waste). The closure gets uplifted as soon as the last rider travels around the course.

We expect the road closure by Te Toto Gorge will be uplifted around 11am. Road closure at Te Hutewai Rd is expected to be uplifted at 2pm. If necessary, traffic will be allowed with race direction, but only at slow speed.
