Mr Sullivan won the top spot 19772 against Peter Hockenhull, who was ousted as president in April last year because of his plans for a restructure.

Mr Hockenhull, supported by Andreas Broring who lost his bid for Club treasurer, stood for presidency against Mr Sullivan – the two had said the election would be a vote between those who wanted to sell the Club premises and those who wished to trade their way out of debt.

Mr Sullivan says his return to presidency shows he has support from Club members.

“We want to get the Club back into the black.

“I think we have a good manager and good staff, I just think the place is old and tired and it costs a lot of money to do anything with it.”

The financial report for the year ended March 31, 2017, shows that the Club made a loss of $117,710 compared with a profit of $13,051 the previous year.

Mr Hockenhull had told the Raglan Chronicle that Mr Sullivan had a secret agenda in wanting to sell because he wanted the Club to buy the building predominantly occupied by Orca Restaurant and Bar – property that Mr Sullivan is part-owner of.

Rumour has it that Mr Sullivan wants to sell to Progressive Enterprises, owner and operator of Countdown supermarkets in New Zealand.

Mr Sullivan says a special meeting will be held in about four to five weeks time presenting a number of options to further the Club.

He says he has been working on the options for about nine months.

“We have a preferred option but our eyes are still open.

“The members do want to know what is going on but a lot is commercially sensitive at the moment.”

Any decision to sell the Club will be decided by the members, he says.

Mr Hockenhull says he is disappointed that Mr Sullivan won the election because “now we will lose the Club”. “What will be will be.”

Mr Broring, who lost his bid for treasurer against Bevan Miller 189-73, says he is glad that the election raised awareness and discussion about the future of the Club, with more people voicing their concerns about a sale.

Mr Broring, says a new, giant supermarket will take business away from locals and he believes there are about five members of the executive who oppose the sale of the Club.

New committee member Gary Kite says he is “passionate that the Club remains where it is and we strive to find alternative methods to get the Club financially buoyant”. Taste of meat lures top chefs to Raglan

y Kitchen Rules judge Gareth Stewart is bit scared of cows.

And although the executive chef of Nourish Group, who oversees 11 restaurant kitchens, was in Raglan on Monday to check out his new, regular supply of Grandad’s Beef, he wasn’t too keen to get too close.

“I’m pretty good at cooking them, not at patting them when they are live,” says Gareth, a bit nervously. He was chased by a cow when he was young.

Gareth brought with him four other top chefs from Auckland, who will be serving up Grandad’s Beef at the Jervois Steak House, Euro, FISH and Baduzzi restaurants from this week.

It was the flavour of the meat that got them into gumboots and trudging around Brookdell Farm in Ohautira Rd for a lesson in biological farming practices by the Bayliss family.

“The one thing for me is flavour,” says Gareth. “If it tastes good I want it.”

Tracey Bayliss, whose parents Cliff and Maureen own Brookdell Farm, had rocked up to the Jervois Steak House, which is part of

the Nourish Group, with her little black bag of steaks and offered them a try.

They were instantly sold on the taste, however there was a catch.

“Usually restaurants always place orders for meat by the kilo,” says Tracey. “I want six kilos of eye fillet and six kilos of sirloin steak.

We can’t do that, it doesn’t work in with our philosophy.”

And that philosophy is sustainable farming, using the whole beast.

So she invited them down to come and look at the big steers that are raised using traditional farming practices – there’s no mass production here. Chemicals aren’t used on the land and the stock are all raised on real milk and then grassfed, supplemented by hay and silage.

“That’s 600 kilograms of meat in the paddock. So I can’t give you two kilos of rump or eye fillet, I can’t slice two kilos off the back of that guy,” explains Tracey.

“It’s not about mass producing. We are not processing in a year what competitors do in a day. We need to start looking at everything as a whole.”

Another reason why Tracey got the chefs on the farm was to show them why her family’s meat tastes so good.

That’s because they focus on the soil and keep practices natural. The by-product is beef superior in taste.

“I wanted them to see it, feel it and touch it, rather than rocking up with a big bag of soil and worms,” says Tracey.

“Even if they came here purely and simply for the taste it shows there is demand for this type of farming.”

Gareth says it’s really good to see the connection between pasture and plate.

“To see where the products have come from and tell the story to your guests.”

For the five chefs who came to Raglan that day, those stories include a feast of homemade scones and jam, sausage and egg pie, sausages and mince patties – good old farming hospitality!

It also includes getting shocked by an electric fence, checking out the pig hunter’s man cave filled with tusk trophies, drinking water from a farm stream and returning home with bags of grapefruit.

“Beautiful, the fact you can drink from a stream,” says Gareth, after standing in the water for a taste.

“I will let you know if I am sick later.”

Raglan kids stars on radio show

ot only is Raglan 9-year-old Eli O’Connor a radio star but he will feature in a national kids magazine.

“little beauty” of a Raglan bach has picked up both a gold award and category win in this year’s Waikato Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition.

Praised by the judges as a retreat that “wears its heart on its sleeve”, the onebedroom one-bathroom 70sqm bach at Manu Bay was voted the top build in the Resene New Homes up to $450,000 section.

The bach was the work of Matangi-based builder/designer Francis Van Den Einden, who’s lived in Raglan West in the past and who used Jamie Bruce of Te Uku’s Envision Architecture to produce the detailed drawings.

As a gold award winner it now goes on to be judged against similar winners from around the country to find the gold reserve national finalists.

The judges for the Waikato competition said a fully exposed steel beam structure was key to the sturdy, honest design of the Raglan retreat. Exposed roofing iron has been used in place of soffits to continue the theme, they noted.

They praised the use of locally sourced cladding materials, from pine plywood walls and ceilings to locally milled macrocarpa weatherboards and decking. Glass sliders enhanced flow to the outdoors, they added.

“Superbly positioned to capture the afternoon sun and amazing views of the rugged Waikato west coast, the interior is a wellinsulated and welcoming space,” their citation continued. “Double-glazed low emissivity glass welcomes in the rays, delivering natural warmth to highly insulated polished concrete floors which lasts into the evening.”

The judges also noted the compact wood burner to keep the interior cosy in winter,

a 25,000-litre tank that collects rainwater underground and a hot tub on the deck for an indulgent dip was “a beautiful spot to soak up this design and its … surroundings”.

Mr Van Den Einden says his small build was a “highly detailed” job completed last year for an older Auckland couple. It included “lots of little features” picked up by the judges, among them glow-in-the-dark concrete flooring in the bathroom.

A boardwalk connects the structure’s decking to the caravan that the couple – identified only as John and Yvonne – have stayed in till now on the shared-title property.

The Manu Bay bach is one of three smaller builds with big views that have earned Raglan

national exposure over the past year.

About two months ago a tiny house that popped up in Kaitoke Bay featured on a new online do-it-yourself series fronted by renowned UK television architect George Clarke.

In this case a caravan already on site had to make way for the build, a 4.2m-high contemporary bach erected on a 559sqm back section also owned by an Auckland couple.

The pair described their compact but innovative living space as luxurious. “The design choices we’ve made don’t make it feel like a tiny house.”

Hi, Iʼm Mark Tinetti. My family and I have been living locally in Raglan for two years now.

P LASTIC FREE JULY - WR AP UP !

WEC Event Recap This last month many people have been taking part in Plastic Free July – trying to reduce their use of plastic and taking part in events/activities addressing the issue of plastic pollution.

The Whaingaroa Environment Centre was thrilled to help coordinate the following events: • Timebank Raglan member Meredith Youngson held a Beeswax Wraps workshop. This workshop taught a group of six how to create beautiful foodwraps from cotton and beeswax – no need for gladwrap anymore!

• Bag It Raglan held a marathon sewing session and created more wonderful reusable bags for our community. Many of these bags were given out at two ‘pop-up giveaway’ nights at the supermarkets to hundreds of grateful shoppers. Helping us get one step closer to a Plastic Bag Free Raglan!

• A beach clean up with Xtreme Zero Waste, Raglan Kayak & Paddleboard, Raglan Backpackers, Ian Hardie and 27 wonderful locals collected nearly 2 cubic metres of rubbish from the northern harbour (break down of rubbish collected below).

• Over 50 people joined in the Community Conversation last week, which focussed on plastic and how we can reduce our use. To Recap: - Rick from Xtreme Zero Waste provided a historical background and suggested we need to move from a linear throwaway economy to a circular one – where we buy goods of high quality, repair and reuse these. Recycling is only part of the solution.

- Merren described how she lives her plastic-free lifestyle – although it takes some effort to eliminate plastic from your life, we can all do it. She is an inspiration!

- Annick Janson talked about the collaboration between her son and local artist, Yaniv and the Green Room Marketing – an example of working together and using art to communicate the problem of plastic pollution.

- June Penn then provided a summary of the Plastic Bag Free Raglan Project – describing the wonderful work of Bag It Raglan, the jute bag giveaways, working with accommodation providers, education programmes and working with businesses to move away from plastic and provide compostable bags instead. Currently 67.3% of businesses are no longer supplying plastic bags in Raglan and have been ‘accredited Plastic Bag Free’ – she urges Raglan to support these businesses.

• The last WEC event for Plastic Free July is this Friday 28th July – Green Your Clean a demonstration workshop to learn how to make your own cleaning products and moisturiser.

Plastic Free July isn’t just about refusing bags when you go shopping for this one month, it’s about creating awareness of the plastic that is everywhere in our lives, everyday of our lives.

By creating awareness, we hope to start working together to change our habits. Don’t let Plastic Free July be the end of your plastic-free efforts!

Plastic Bag Free Raglan Single-use plastic carry bags are one of the worst ocean pollutants because of their widespread availability, increasing volume of use and ease of escape into the wild. They are particularly low value to recycle and are used for an average of just 12-minutes each! Most importantly, we don’t actually need them.

Through the PBFR Business Accreditation Program, businesses are making a conscious effort to support the environment by removing single-use plastic bags from their shops. This helps to limit the amount of bags that are making their way onto the streets, into storm drains, surrounding bush areas and eventually the sea. So the next time you are shopping in town, be sure to support and thank the accredited PBFR Partners, and

remember your resuable bag!

FREE RANGING CATS Free ranging or stray cats in bush reserves and around town are managed via a “live trapping program” to control their populations.

This means that if a domestic cat is caught it can be released unharmed or if your cat is micro chipped and collared it will be much easier for the Raglan Stray Animal and Wildlife Fund to identify the owner and the cat returned.

The Karioi project and Raglan Stray Animal and Wildlife Fund will be working in partnership to manage free ranging cats. All cats caught will be assessed by Raglan Stray Animal and Wildlife Fund to determine if a cat is a stray or can be rehabilitated or re-homed.

Cat owners should consider getting a collar for their cat and keeping cats indoors at night from 7 pm to 7 am. De-sexing and micro chipping is also recommended and Raglan Stray Animal and Wildlife Fund will be running a special on micro chipping for the month of August to support cat owners.

The road closure is in place from the gravel side of Whaanga Road, just past the entrance onto Te Tuhi Road, just past the entrance to Xtreme Zero Waste, @ Te Mata/Ruapuke, @ Te Hutewai/Te Mata, @ Te Mata/Waimaori.

This is a rolling road closure, which simply means that our last tail end vehicle becomes our works end. We expect Te Toto gorge to be uplifted around 11am, Waimaori between 1130 - 12pm and Ruapuke around 1.15pm.

Race direction is anti clockwise around Karioi.

Vehicles can travel in the same direction as the riders.

Please keep an eye out for our 85km riders, they will be riding past Waireinga/Bridal Veil Falls, Papatapu and Te Mata Roads.

Races will commence on Stewart Street: 85km @ 0830, 57km @ 0930, 43km @ 1015. Races finish in on Raglan Airfield, come down and cheer the riders home, first anticipated rider in @ around 1130.

We will also have a stop/go on the corner of Te Hutewai and Wainui Roads - riders will come down Te Hutewai Road and will turn right onto Wainui, our marshals will be operating the stop/go to enable riders to smoothly turn right from Te Hutewai onto Wainui Road.
