New exhibition pays tribute to Raglan’s enduring pipe band

ts drummers and pipers have come and gone over time, but Raglan District Caledonian Society and Highland Pipe Band has endured for more than 70 years, playing a big part in the town’s social history.

Now the band which proudly heads up Raglan’s Anzac Day and New Year’s Eve parades is taking centre stage elsewhere downtown – in an exhibition which occupies pride of place, if not a vast expanse, immediately inside the entrance to the museum in Wainui Road.

A stone’s throw from the fire station where members have practised for years, the band’s drums and pipes of old are on display along with early uniforms worn by two mannequins fondly called Tom and Betty after the Whites, who were involved in the society from the beginning.

The display also includes footage of members and parades – from the early days through to the present – showing continuously on a small TV screen.

“It’s a fantastic exhibition,” band stalwart Brett McCardle told the Chronicle.

Now in his 60s, the former Raglan District High School student remembers being asked as a young lad if he’d like to learn the pipes. “Why not?” he thought, so along with a few others Brett took up

tuition under the eye of late Te Uku identity Kelly Gifford.

That was during the 1970s and Brett’s been playing on and off ever since. At one stage it seemed like everyone in Raglan was in the band, he recalls. “It was a real social event.”

Another at the museum on Monday to talk to the Chronicle about the exhibition was Raglan Community Board chair Bob MacLeod, whose first connection with the band goes back the best part of a decade earlier.

Bob – who started school in Stewart Street then went on to the district high in Norrie Ave – began piping about the age of eight.

Being in the band back then was a real commitment, he says. Piping practice was on Tuesdays, it was marching on Thursdays at Kopua reserve and come Saturdays – when Raglan “closed down” at noon – a 30-seater bus took band members further afield to the likes of Ngaruawahia, Hamilton and Paeroa for Caledonian events.

“I used to pipe for the Highland dancing (competitions),” Bob recalls. He reckons it beat hanging around all day after playing in the band.

Caledonian events were big entertainment in those days, Brett chimes in.

But the band ebbed and flowed like the tide, he adds. It went through another rejuvenation in the mid 2000s with the addition of drummer Rob Kirkwood – who ultimately got son Jack involved – while Kelly Gifford’s grandson Warren Yorston joined as a piper.

Then old hand Jamie Edwards, who’d piped way back as a schoolboy with Brett, returned to the band and – with the addition of seasoned piper Deirdre Bourne – made up a core group of six or so who pretty much remain today.

“It’s not exactly dying,” Deirdre laughs.

The band – boosted by members from other Caledonian societies – has led every Raglan New Year’s Eve and Anzac Day parade for more than 40 years.

At New Year’s the Raglan band has relaxed its dress code to accommodate pipers and drummers who regularly join their ranks while on holiday at Kopua campground. Jandals, T-shirts, anything goes, says Deirdre – just as long as they’ve got the all-important kilt.

Raglan & District Museum secretary Barbara Day and collections administrator Kaz Willoughby put the exhibition together last month. It will continue through until early 2019.

Recreational fishers fined approx $4,000 over long weekend in the Coromandel

e c r e a t i o n a l fishers around the Coromandel Peninsula were fined around $4,000 over Labour Weekend for various fisheries related offences including gathering crayfish that were carrying eggs.

MPI fishery officers uncovered the offending while out on patrol on land and at sea on both the west and east coast of the peninsula.

Spokesman Jason Howat says around 400 recreational fishers were subject to inspections and

some paid the price for committing a range of offences.

“In general, compliance with fisheries regulations was high, with fishers playing their part in protecting the fishery by sticking to the rules.

“However, 14 infringements were issued for offences ranging from undersized fish (snapper), excess and undersized paua, undersized scallops, undersized crayfish and taking crayfish that were carrying eggs.

“In a more serious incident, a recreational fishing boat was boarded at sea by fishery officers in Opito Bay in the early evening. The inspection revealed 132 scallops, 52 of which were undersized.

“As a result, the vessel and the dive gear used in the offending was seized and one person will face prosecution action.”

Mr Howat says MPI fishery officers are always out and about over Labour Weekend so people who breach fisheries regulations will be caught.

“The result of the weekend’s patrol sends a very clear message.

People who choose to break the rules will be dealt with accordingly.

There’s not an endless supply of fish in the sea. We all need to do our bit to protect the sustainability of our fisheries for current and future generations and for the health of the fishery in general.”

Corporate life in Europe no match for life of volunteering back home

Hinemoa: "Paradise is your own backyard".

he Labour Weekend influx of holidaymakers and day trippers into Raglan might tempt more than the odd local to leave the hordes to it, but not Hinemoa Rossi.

Why head out of town, asks this passionate volunteer in the Whaingaroa community, when “paradise is your own backyard”.

Hinemoa’s own little piece of paradise these days is a home tucked in at the end of Taipari Ave in Raglan West, with only bush separating her property from Poihakena Marae and with the Pokohue creek – where she played as a child – running by so close she can hear it trickling.

It’s a gentle space to be, she says, and pretty much where she’s based herself since returning from Europe to Whaingaroa with her Italian husband, Alex, and their

toddler son, Tainui, 18 years ago.

That’s when this now 50-something – a Kereopa by birth – took on what she calls her first volunteer gig. It was with Te Kopua 2B3 Incorporation which looks after ancestral Maori land blocks along Riria Kereopa Memorial Drive.

A long-held vision by local Maori to build a papakainga there has so far seen the construction of three homes. All are currently rented out to whanau because, as Hinemoa explains, “when our family come home they can’t afford to live in this town”.

Hinemoa stresses she’s just one of many who have helped the vision become a reality by working collaboratively, each using their own skills. Hers are in business, having worked for the Union Bank of Switzerland in London where she says years of corporate meetings honed her organisational skills.

“They turned me into a

diplomat … none of this shootfrom-the-hip Kereopa stance,” she laughs. The one-time Raglan Area School dux and former UBS business analyst now rates diplomacy – and negotiation – among her strengths.

Reintegrating into the community and drawing on those strengths, Hinemoa also became involved – following on from her parents – in the continuing growth of Poihakena Marae and helping in the establishment in 2000 of what is now known as Xtreme Zero Waste.

Xtreme’s success, she says, relied on the collaboration of many people with “great values” centred on nurturing Papatuanuku or Mother Earth.

About 2009 Hinemoa found herself in another local volunteering role, as coordinator of Poihakena Marae’s debut television appearance on ‘Marae DIY’.

This was a daunting project with a “really amazing” outcome, she says. “Look at the transformation of our marae. It’s always busy and full with evening classes … it goes from strength to strength.”

The nearby Kokiri Centre’s stage, which has been used for various music and cultural festivals over the years, also got a makeover in a more recent series of ‘Marae DIY’. Hinemoa was again involved although cousin Angeline Greensill coordinated that project, with help from many others.

“We are very humble, our people,” says Hinemoa. “We quietly work together to advance a bigger goal: ultimately the nurturing of whanau and retention of land.”

Sometimes, though, achieving those goals has demanded a more public stand. Her father’s sister, the late Eva Rickard, campaigned

LED street lighting to save $70,000 a year on one of the largest local roading networks operated by a local authority in the country.

It also details initiatives designed to protect environmental sustainability too, such as: • a kerbside food waste collection started in partnership with Raglan’s Xtreme Zero Waste which has diverted 123 tonnes of food waste from landfill to compost, • the completion of a switch to water meter charging for all properties connected to a Council water supply to encourage water conservation and to help locate and fix water losses, • the completion of the second year of a $1.76 million ‘continuous improvement programme’ to mitigate the risk of wastewater overflows with a particular focus on protecting waterways and environmentally sensitive areas, and • the completion of the second year of a four-year Lake Rotokauri restoration programme

supported by nearly $400,000 funding from the Waikato River Authority Mayor Sanson says environmental sustainability was also a focus for some of the $800,000 of grants the Council committed for distribution to community groups throughout the district for work on local projects.

The grants schedule included $20,000 committed to support projects under the Waikato District Lakes and Wetlands memorandum of agreement with Waikato Regional Council, Waikato-Tainui, the Department of Conservation and Fish & Game, and $25,000 for work around Te Otamanui Lagoon.

he good weather this Labour Weekend was perfect for gathering together with family and friends.

Traditionally it is time to get into the garden and it was inspiring to see all the abundance at the Crop Swap and then call in at the Creative Art Market and meet the locals and chat with the different stall holders.

There are lots of groups working together such as Timebank, the Environmental Centre, Raglan Naturally and the Horticulture Society. They

encourage people to share ideas and support one another as well as taking care of our environment.

On Sunday at the Old School at 2pm there is a play about herbs. A Revealing Thyme is written and performed by Hamilton writer, actor and researcher, Joanna Bishop. Joanna is based in one of Hamilton’s oldest homes where she completed her doctorate on the history of medicinal plant use in colonial New Zealand.

Dangerously Inappropriate Speed Zones of Raglan. Episode 1

Tackling the Issues An occasional opinion column with long term Raglan resident, Ross Henderson.

A

s the safety driven upgrade of SH23 nears completion the question that seems to be on every commuters lips is ‘’given they’ve spent so much money widening the road, why the hell didn’t they paint some passing lanes on it?”

“Evidence on other similar highways does not show major safety gains from passing lanes.

Although we acknowledge they can alleviate some frustration.

Therefore, we are not considering these treatments as part of this project.”

(Source, NZTA Newsletter, December 2016) So the answer is that the upgrade was about safety, not convenience, and safe road design is a well-developed science. By establishing a wide shoulder they have created both a pull over zone and a margin for error. Any slow driver who genuinely wants to be courteous is just as likely to pull over on a broad and safe shoulder as they are to slow down to let faster traffic overtake on a short passing lane. As with all things, we get to decide whether we want to actively participate in a solution, or doggedly maintain a role as part of a problem that is “someone else’s job” to fix. Of course some signage to that effect would help.

And we’ve all had the frustration of following a slower vehicle all the way to the only passing lane in 45 kilometers of open road only to curse them as they accelerate leaving half a dozen enraged commuters in their wake.

The reason they do this is not that they hold a grudge or take some inexplicable pleasure in driving others into a frenzy of potentially lethal risk taking. It's because the road got wider and they felt safer and able to go a bit faster.

And herein lies a problem.

NZTA’s stated plan for the section of road from the corner before Greenslade Road and the 50k zone is the same widening

and shoulder extension as we have seen on the rest of the project. The result of this will be that drivers will feel confident to drive faster.

Unfortunately that confidence and that additional speed will add to what is already a completely unacceptable list of hazards. Not only does this 100 kph stretch of road have pedestrians but no footpath, bicycles but no cycle lane, a whole bunch of hidden driveways and, just after a blind corner, a hidden turnoff to the rapidly growing suburb on Greenslade Rd, it also has the most poorly designed intersection on the entire highway.

I’m referring, of course, to the SH 23, Lorenzen Bay Road, Hills Road intersection that has been the scene of so many near misses in the last few months.

Every vehicle coming into or leaving the Raglan area passes through this intersection, a significant proportion of these are using the Lorenzen Bay Road route to Raglan North or the wharf/boat-ramp complex and an increasing number of vehicles are going to the developments and building sites on the substandard

Hills Road. No doubt, when decisions were made in the past to postpone the upgrading of the intersection to a roundabout (that being the only viable option in my view), the traffic levels were only a fraction of what they are now, and the current explosion of Raglan popularity was not anticipated.

Also not allowed for was the strange tendency some drivers have, to speed up when they see a hazard as if to symbolically punish the other driver for challenging their God-given right to travel at 100KPH. The intersection is dangerous and what is required is an immediate, short-term solution to alleviate, as far as possible, the risk over summer and a complete redesign of the intersection as soon as possible.

The short-term solution, and by this, I mean now (RIGHT NOW), is to slow traffic down and warn people of the dangers.

Why wouldn't we? What possible justification would we have for not warning people of imminent danger?

The ASAP, longer term solution is to get on with it and

build a roundabout and realign the end of Lorenzen Bay Rd so that drivers are not forced to swing wide to get into Lorenzen Bay Road if they are coming from the Raglan direction. This should also be compatible with the eventual realignment of Greenslade Road to connect with Lorenzen Bay Road rather than SH 23. At least that’s how I see it, but then, this is just an opinion piece. I have no doubt, however, that the WDC roading

engineers have long since draw up some kind of improvements and are impatient to see them happen.

I’m usually philosophical about the reality of essential infrastructural investment following demand rather than preceding it, but this is urgent - lives are at stake. So, come on NZTA, WDC, WTFE. Do whatever you have to do to make it happen.

Did you know that NZ is the seabird capital of the world??

Just a few hundred years ago, there would have been thousands of seabirds on Karioi.

Seabirds are ecosystem engineers, bringing marine nutrients to land in the form of guano, and helping excavate and aerate the soil.

One of the few petrel species still breeding on the mainland are the Grey-Faced Petrel / Oi. We are extremely lucky to have them in Whaingaroa! Oi are a taonga species, They lay their eggs and raise their chicks in underground burrows on our coastline, which makes them susceptible to predators like rats, stoats, possums and roaming dogs and cats.

Last year, 7 Oi chicks successfully fledged as a result of our community predator control programme.

- Over 2000 hectares of predator control.

- 1500 traps checked by over 50 volunteers and 150 backyard trappers.

- A year-round seabird monitoring programme.

Spring Flings at Kaahus Nest Re-use Shop Up at Kaahu’s Nest on Te Hutewai Rd there’s always surprises and potential projects in abundance.

All the donations from the community get to have another life in our community, and the income from the shop helps Xtreme Zero Waste to run the facilities, and services that Xtreme Waste provides. Your support also helps our community by providing valuable employment opportunities; we currently employ 38 people.

Together we are helping to build a circular economy in our town.

So what’s new in the Nest? - We have been putting out all our summer clothes – dresses, shorts, shirts and togs. There’s shoes, hats, belts and other accessories. You could get a whole summer wardrobe for under $100!! There’s a ‘funky and fabulous’ rail and loads of dress up stuff for Halloween parties. A fantastic selection of books and magazines. You will find something for everyone with books from 50c to $5. We have stationary and loads of picture frames for sorting out those favourite family photos.

In the homeware section we’ve got pretty much everything you could possibly need : plates, bowls, mugs cups, glasses, platters, pots, pans and gadgets galore.

Our compost stand is always full, and loaded up with your spring gardening needs. Superfood compost is full of nutrients for you summer garden; Superfood mulch is great around trees and as a water saving weedsuppressing layer for your vege garden.

Bring the compost bags back when you’ve finished, we’ll give you a 50c return and we can refill the bag again and again.

We also have bottles of ‘Worm Wees’ which are loaded with beneficial bugs from the worms guts to bring life back to tired soil and container plants. Our plant man Ads has been rescuing plants from the greenwaste drop off and potting them up, we have a little area by the compost for these. Ads Garden Centre is coming soon.

AND MOST EXCITING OF ALL ….. We are getting a shop extension.

Kaahu’s Nest has been bulging at the seams with all the wonderful donations from our community. We have run out of space so we’re moving the Recycling Bay out, taking over the whole covered space and closing it in to keep out the dust. We’ll be able to look after our furniture better and are looking forward to displaying some unique upcycled pieces from the wood and metal yards.
