Dear Editor I would like to thank Solscape for the excellent venue and meals during the Surfing-Social Hui conference held there.

Vodafone tower boosts rural coverage for Te Uku

The new Vodafone cell tower in Te Uku.

The Te Uku cell site is one of seven new towers for the Waikato District to be built under the Rural Broadband Initiative – which Vodafone delivers in partnership with the Government and Chorus – to bring faster, more reliable wireless broadband and mobile coverage to Kiwis living in rural New Zealand.

The site will radically transform the area’s access to communication services, with almost 500 addresses benefiting from greater connectivity over Vodafone's 4G network.

Vodafone’s Technology Director, Tony Baird, says connectivity and access to highspeed broadband has become a critical tool for Kiwis in rural areas.

“We’re continually investing so our rural customers gain access to the same benefits as those living in urban areas, and have done so since the Rural Broadband Initiative began. Our focus is to ensure rural Kiwis can stay reliably connected.”

Te Uku residents can look forward to optimised broadband speeds just like Chris Lewis, President of Waikato Federated Farmers, who had Rural Broadband installed earlier this year and connected his farm to fast and reliable broadband.

“Ensuring the milk shed is connected means information is getting off the farm in real time. The cell phone coverage upgrade also means I’m pretty much connected all over the farm.”

The Te Uku site will ensure residents and businesses have access to reliable information and communications, can connect to their community and can engage online in the same way as their urban counterparts.

Baird adds, “Being connected to regional, national and international partners is critical in ensuring rural businesses remain competitive and keep innovating”.

On completion of the Rural Broadband Initiative, Vodafone coverage will be available to almost 9000 address points in the Waikato area.

Council use of herbicide slammed aikato District Council has been W criticised for using a herbicide Raglan resident Brian Scrafton says glyphosate – commonly known here as the weed killer Roundup – has been banned from use in many countries but the council continues to use it for controlling weeds on residential roadsides.

“It could be at the bottom of your garden.”

In March 2015 the World Health Organisation's International Agency for Research on Cancer classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic in humans” based on epidemiological studies, animal studies and in vitro studies.

Countries that have banned its use include Holland, Denmark and Sweden, and in some countries “you can’t buy it over the counter”, says Mr Scrafton, who took his concerns to the Raglan Community Board.

Tim Harty says glyphosate is a cost effective and safe solution to weed control.

“Council is aware of information that is readily available to the public on websites such as the World Health Organisation.

The National Poisons Centre also holds all current material safety data sheets (MSDS) for all products used in New Zealand. The WHO website states that glyphosate has low toxicity and does not present a hazard to human health.”

Mr Harty says there has been research and trials done by Waikato District Council and other local authorities in recent years, “but they saw limited success and a return to use of glyphosate in most cases”.

“There are many other methods, (but they come) with greatly increased costs, for example the manual removal of plants.

Steam treatment is also an option, but both would incur more cost to the ratepayer.”

He says the council typically sprays three times a year within the road reserves.

“Residents can apply for a no-spray zone which exempts them from road side spraying, however residents then need to control the weeds to a similar standard themselves.”

New bylaw to target freedom campers n increase in the number of A campervans and freedom campers in the Raglan area has prompted the Waikato District Council to develop a Freedom Camping Bylaw, which will be put out for public consultation this year.

WDC general manager of customer support Sue Duignan says campervans have become an increasing problem around Raglan, despite signs saying that freedom camping is not permitted.

For the summer period from December 27 to January 10, council issued 42 infringements for campervans parking on a road not in a licenced camping area.

This is a higher number than in previous years, says Ms Duignan. “This increased number of fines does indicate a rising number of campervans wanting to park in Raglan. This means it is an appropriate

time to develop a new bylaw and establish what controls are appropriate to deal with problems and issues that may be associated with freedom camping.”

Currently the council’s Parking Traffic Control and Public Places Bylaw bans freedom camping “on any road, public place, or any other land under the control of the council, other than in a licensed camping ground. There are a few designated parking areas for self-contained campervans in the Waikato district, such as the domain in Ngaruawahia, but none in the Raglan area.

In 2007, a proposed council parking bylaw, which would have allowed campervans to park overnight in the parking area beside the fire station, left Raglan residents unimpressed.

Ms Duignan says council patrols the hotspots where campervans are known to park up, however patrols are limited.

“Signage is also placed where there are recognised problems.”

Ruapuke resident Jenny Thomson says campervans are coming in ever-increasing numbers around Mt Karioi, and were sometimes parking up on the roadside for up to three weeks.

“Where there is a pull-off they will be there.”

Mrs Thomson wants council to designate a parking area for campervans in town, and believes the rugby grounds could be a good “overflow site”.

By keeping the caravans in Raglan it would be better for businesses, she says.

“I do feel that if there is adequate areas for them to camp in it will take them off the roads.”

One Raglan resident, who lives in Greenslade Rd, says campervans often park up on the roadside by her driveway.

Mr Scrafton, who has lived in Raglan for just over a year, says he went away last year for about a month and came back to see “a lot of dead or dry grass around the edges of the berms, including a length of my lawn, which I wasn’t happy about”.

“I asked the council what they were using.

“The fact that it is being used in residential areas without any thought, without telling anyone ...

“There is a fine mist. You are breathing it in and it is getting on your skin,” says Mr Scrafton, who says he’s seen spray contractors wearing no protective clothing, “like they are spraying water”.

He says council could use alternative ways to control weeds, such as mechanical means, manpower or steam, rather than reach for the glyphosate in residential areas.

utdoor education teacher Dave O Williams, who’s well on the way to scaling seven of the world’s highest peaks from sea level, reckons he can’t top Raglan as a place to live and train.

His personal sea-to-summit mission in seven continents – aptly titled Sea2Summit7 – has seen him conquer so far Tanzania’s Mt Kilimanjaro, Russia’s Mt Elbrus, Australia’s Mt Kosciuszko and just last month Argentina’s Mt Aconcagua after turning back about 300m from the top in both 2013 and 2015.

But despite these achievements and the incredible birds-eye view of the world they give him, Dave’s still in awe of Mt Karioi and the running, cycling, surfing, kayaking training opportunities he gets right on his doorstep in Raglan, where he’s been living part-time since the middle of last year.

FeastBox is the brainchild of Raglan residents Tara Wrigley and Rachel Brown who describe the service as “food kits for easy entertaining where local food producers are the stars of the menu.”

“Being busy, working mums makes it difficult to get around all the shops in Raglan and Hamilton to source the ingredients needed for special dinners with family and friends. We thought, wouldn’t it be great if we could just get all the ingredients for a delicious feast delivered to our door?” And so the FeastBox story began.

“The Waikato is so rich in produce that we are spoilt for choice,” they say. As Raglan becomes increasingly well known for its great food and dining, the pair have taken inspiration from local restaurants using local ingredients on their menus and are driven by that same theme.

Their aim is to support both Raglan and Waikato producers and encourage FeastBox customers to utilise their produce too.

When they discussed the idea with friends the general consensus was that trying to host the perfect dinner often meant spending a lot of time in the kitchen and not enough time with guests so people were very receptive to the concept.

and fitness fanatic told the Chronicle last weekend of his lifestyle here. “Raglan’s the ideal place to live and train.”

Living in Auckland from Tuesdays to Fridays is “okay”, Dave admits, because he really likes his job at Botany Downs Secondary College. But rounding the last corner on that drive back each week to the home he bought a year ago in Violet Street puts a smile on his face.

“And I (now) recognise everyone in the local shops.”

While this elite athlete hasn’t yet had the chance to tackle either the Karioi Trail or Karioi Classic, he regularly works the trail-running and cycling routes into his cross-training circuit.

Dave covers up to 200km each week to keep fit, he says, because to run from the sea to the summit of the highest mountain on each of the seven continents can be the equivalent of 10 marathons – or one each day – just to get from the nearest coastline

to the base of the mountain.

But his personal mission is about more than just challenging himself to be the first person in the world to summit the seven peaks from the sea. Having recently lost two adventurous young friends to depression, Dave’s also set on raising awareness and $100,000 in funds for males through the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand.

“Too often we try to tackle all our mountains in life alone,” he explains on his inspiring Sea2Summit7 Facebook page encouraging others to support the cause.

Young men in particular are taught to deal with life’s issues by “taking it on the chin”, he adds, rather than asking for help.

Last month good mate and hunting buddy Mike Boston, a Matamata policeman, tackled Aconcagua alongside him to support his successful third attempt at the summit. “The whole idea (of Sea2Summit7) is about not giving up, no matter how tough it gets.”

This April the pair will also climb Alaska’s Mt Denali together, a challenge which includes five marathons and a neverbefore-walked glacier and brings with it a whole new level of danger. Soon after that, Dave will be based in Raglan fulltime to train up for Antarctica’s Mt Vinson Massif from December through to January next year.

His assault on the seventh and final peak – Nepal’s Mt Everest – is scheduled for early 2018.

And if Dave hasn’t reached his 100-grand goal by then he’ll continue to raise funds through corporate and motivational speaking engagements, he says, to get the message of support for male mental health out there.

Don’t expect pre-cooked meals though, “it’s not about doing everything for the customer in a pre-made meal but taking them on a culinary journey without the menu planning, shopping and sourcing of ingredients.”

“Where is my stuff going to fit? … I’ve got to put it somewhere where people will appreciate it.” A venue can make or break a performance or artwork.

And for Karin, who sings in the Raglan choir Wandering Dulcet, which is playing at the Hamilton Fringe Festival next week, her “stuff” is original song, without instruments, unplugged and “quite intimate”. Not the type of music she would want to play in – or which would suit – a pub or a rowdy gig.

Nope! Karin reckons on playing in car park, instead.

“Yes, it is in a car park,” laughs Karin, regarding their Hamilton Fringe Festival performance. She sings in the choir with Charlotte Pearsall, Laura Wells, Eliza Kearvell and Anne Windust, all Raglan women.

“I was asking ‘where is it going to sound really good?’

“I remember seeing this clip on Facebook of some men singing a hymn in a train station. You could really hear the resonance of the voices …

“I said (to the festival organisers) I want a car park or a train station.”

And they got her the Celebrating Age car park.

“I went and had a look at it and it’s a great space.”

Karin, who has been a midwife for nine years but is currently being mum to fourmonth old Frida, says the Fringe Festival is such a cool festival because it gives a supportive and encouraging environment to do almost anything you want.

“It’s experimental and not judgmental, but also attracts a high standard of work.”

She says she cannot speak highly enough of the organisers of the Hamilton Fringe Festival, which is supported by Hamilton City Council, the Creative Communities Scheme, Trust Waikato and Wel Energy Trust.

“They are really awesome and so supportive of all the artists. Normally it’s quite a slog” to get your work out there and appreciated, “but it’s not about money, there is no commercialism”.

“These are people who are just making stuff in their backyards or lounge. It’s not a job but a love. It’s not about the money.”

Wandering Dulcet is a spin-off of a world music choir that was set up in Raglan about two years ago.

“It sort of fizzled out because the choir leader was from Hamilton and couldn’t keep it up.

“There were just us five left. We decided to do our own originals.”

All the women in Wandering Dulcet are young mums.

“We are a bunch of really lovely women who get together to sing.

“It’s a bit like a support group … but (stuff) talking, let’s sing,” Karin laughs.

She says she uses music to keep well, especially since her work as a midwife can be quite stressful, as is being a mum with young children.

“When you are singing in harmony, you become greater then yourself, you play a role. You realise: I don’t have to sound like a rock star, or sound amazing, all I have to do is hold this note.”

Influences include jazz, folk, old sea songs, “sea shanties”, and Appalachian music, and “it’s quite romantic.

“It’s still in its experimental stage, it’s a totally weird space for us and it’s unplugged.

“People are going to come and get what they get. Some of it is going to be great; some will change over time.

“It’s really exciting.”

The Old School Arts Centre is also playing host to an exceptional family puppet show, Rumpelstiltskin, on Friday, March 4, 7pm, as a trial for Fringe artists to tour the Waikato.

This year’s programme includes dance, puppetry, street-theatre, glassmaking, pet photography and more music than before.

Fine weather and a friendly crowd took up residence at the Hamilton Gardens on Saturday as the Waikato Contemporary Dance Projects Trust presented ‘Frolic’.

There were plenty of familiar faces in the dance troupe including local Indya Gibbs who incorporated patu and long poi skills gained at Whitireia Performing Arts School

in Wellington, London Contemporary Dance School graduate and Raglan local Eve VeglioWhite, as well as a group of young dancers from ‘Whaingaroa Youth Movement’.

Local designer Kartika Leng co-ordinated the styling and costumes and Patti Mitchley worked as production and stage manager for the project. It turned out to be a perfect family day out for all.

There was a splash of colour on display this weekend at Manu Bay as the old school single fins were pulled out and on display for the King of the Single Fin contest.

Organised by The Raglan Point Boardriders to celebrate 53 years of the Point Boardriders Club, the day featured entertainment for all with multiple

categories, including the classic Pie Eating competition.

Taylor Hutchison came out on top as King of the Single Fin, with Chris Malone the Twin Fin winner. Joh won the Anything Goes category, surfing the waves on his inflatable surf mat. Whaingaroa is known throughout the country for being a community that cares about Māui Dolphins and for the last 14 years Raglan has come together to celebrate our community and our environment.

On Saturday March 12th, we do it again on Māui Dolphin Day. Come and show your support, from 11am till 3pm.

Those working for Māui Dolphin will be making their way here to answer your questions and let you know the latest Māui news. Waikato Regional Council, the Department of Conservation and Forest and Bird will be among the agencies here for the event. Nicola Toki the DOC Threatened Species Ambassador, will be bringing her whanau to enjoy the day and helping with our Māui Survival Challenge obstacle course for kids.

It’s a day for the community, and an opportunity for your group to raise funds with a food stall or an activity.

Timebank Raglan will be there, showcasing community skills we can all share like harakeke weaving. Bring the whānau to meet the local shore critters in the touch pool with conservation group Karioi Maunga ki te Moana. And now’s the time to get building your Recycled Raft!

Or support our food stalls, who’ll be fundraising for local projects and using compostable, zero-waste packaging. BAR CROSSING SAFETY COURSES AT RAGLAN AND KAWHIA Bar crossings can be very hazardous, even for the most experienced of boaties. They should only ever be tackled with the right attitude, equipment, and knowledge.

The Raglan course is on Sunday 13 March and the Kawhia course is on Sunday 24 April.

“Raglan and Kawhia are west coast bars with bad reputations for a reason. They can be very difficult and, if not navigated properly, it can lead to capsizing and possible fatalities and injuries,” said the council’s maritime service team leader Richard Barnett.

This is a fast growing, fast paced business and the employee must be able to work under pressure and must have knowledge and experience in the harvesting of fresh fish and be able to identify different species.

The fee is $30 if pre-registered or $35 on the day. A lifejacket is required as there will be a trip out to the bar.

The Kawhia course starts at 9am, at the Kawhia Boating and Angling Club, 124 Omimiti Street. Everyone is welcome to attend the free presentation, and a trip across the bar in Raglan Coastguard’s boat is $30.
