Raglan nominees included Raglan Point Boardrider surfers Brie Bennett, Jayden Willoughby, Kora Cooper and Josef Jungwirth. They were nominated for the awards by Raglan Area School for their hard work and dedication this past year.

Brie Bennett walked away with the award for Junior Sportswoman of the Year, while Kora Cooper took the Junior Sportsmen of the Year award home.

The Waikato District Sports Awards are hosted by Sport Waikato and are a chance to recognise those both competing in sport and those who support the sportspeople.

‘Local Hero’ award recipient thought that someone was horsing around

hristine Hartstone “thought it was a scam” when she got an email recently to say she was up for a New Zealander of the Year Award.

But then she googled the awards’ nominees and, sure enough, there was her name among the dozen in the Waikato region who were set to be honoured in the Kiwibank Local Hero category for community service.

To say she was surprised is putting it mildly.

Although the administration of equestrian events around the country has taken up virtually all her time since she co-established the Te Uku Pony Club 35odd years ago with daughter Jody in mind, Christine – like all “unsung heroes” – didn’t rate her volunteer work as all that important.

At least not up there with the likes of a renowned heart specialist from Whatawhata, for instance, or the longtime Whangamata Beach Hop organiser – two of those who also received local hero medals “honouring the best of us” at the awards ceremony a fortnight ago.

Fashion icon Annah Stretton was also there at the Waikato Museum function, earning acknowledgment for her work with women prisoners.

Christine recalls being impressed by all the different stories behind the medals but reckons she can’t remember a thing that was said of her, only that she was 68!

But “thank God” she was looking her best in her glad rags, seated as she was next to Annah S. =Christine says her work has been a labour of love which developed out of supporting Jody, first as a Te Uku schoolgirl with a passion for ponies but now as New Zealand’s top Grand Prix Dressage rider and an international equestrian coach.

Christine started out as secretarytreasurer of the local pony club, moving on to treasurer of Hamilton Pony Club – where she was also the district commissioner for a time – then as treasurer of the area club.

“These (roles) were usually all at the same time,” she laughs.

When Jody was a teen Christine would also go out scoring at dressage days, and ultimately became treasurer for Dressage Waikato. Then she became events secretary for Kihikihi Waikato Eventing, involved with the “big” International Horse Trials each April.

Christine retired last year but is still a committee member for the Waikato Equestrian Centre, which is the home to many events. And as event secretary for the centre’s horse trials and dressage days, she’s kept busy with what began as the Kaurilands but is now the Equissage Winter Dressage series.

“Jody also got me involved in the NZ Warmblood Association,” she adds. “Mum you just (have to) look after the database,” was how her daughter roped her in.

Jody told the Chronicle this week it was

“pretty cool” to see her mum awarded a local hero medal for what was basically a full-time job without pay.

Her mother had travelled all round the country for years, she explained, “mainly to eventing and dressage … and she doesn’t leave the computer during the day.”

Christine says she’s relished working over the years for the country’s up-andcoming riders. “You think you might be there for five years, then it’s 10 … competition doesn’t happen without organisation.”

Left Hand Break restaurant gets new lease of life A column connecting with senior citizens in our community.

ith the busy season just around the corner some of the senior groups have started their end of year functions.

However, for others, the show must go on. The Saturday morning drop-in session will continue over the holiday period even though the Raglan Community House will be closed from December 22 until January 15, 2018. The staff and volunteers will be relocating the Bargain Basement Op Shop during the Christmas break.

The Raglan Community Christmas Dinner will be on December 25. Contact Colin 825 8289 or Dave 825 8792.

The Senior Technology Group will continue to support those who need help.

Thursdays 2pm until 3pm at the Raglan Community House.

The Lions Op Shop in Wallis Street will be open seven days a week except for Christmas Day. The Crop Swap will be held on the first and third Sundays of the month at 9.30am. The venue will vary.

The next meeting will be at the Scout Hall on December 3. Bring something to share for a celebration picnic.

Legionnaires Disease (Legionella) With the gardening season now in full swing (after a slow damp start be sure) gardeners need to be careful around soil, compost and potting mix. Avoid inhaling dust or air from freshly opened bags

of compost. It is important to dampen and avoid stirring up the dusty particles which could contain bacteria.

The Legionella bacteria causes a life threatening type of pneumonia and was first recognised in 1976, at a Convention of Legion Veterans in Philadelphia. It was caused by contaminated water from the hotel’s cooling towers. About 200 contracted the disease and almost 30 died. The same bacteria is found in soil, particularly, potting mix.

The symptoms range from mild (called pontiac) which appears soon after contact with the Legionnaires spores and lasts a few days requiring no medical treatment.

The more serious form of Legionnaires requires strong antibiotics and often hospitalisation. Nearly 40 years later it is still difficult to diagnose and treat. Many are left with ongoing respiratory problems.

The elderly are more vulnerable to contracting Legionella and also smokers, heavy drinkers and those with a history of lung problems. It is advisable to wear a mask and gloves.

The Raglan Naturally (Wellbeing Group) is making sure visitors and locals have access to emergency numbers throughout the summer. Notices will be placed throughout the district eg: emergency centres shops, notice board and public places such as parks, toilets and walk ways.

Joining forces in this new culinary venture, they hope to satisfy the tastebuds of club regulars as well as enticing newcomers to experience the restaurant and check out what the club has to offer.

“This is an amazing facility with an amazing kitchen,” Tom says.

“For $10 you can take a trial three-month membership which is perfect for holidaymakers over the summer.”

Chef Mauro adds his magic touch to the

“The key to success is to provide consistently good food,” Mauro says.

“Using seasonal and local produce as much as possible.”

And the best fish and chips will still be on offer Ts - on the fryers and along with Mona, providing the same friendly service.

“We feel really lucky and privileged to continue working with these amazing people,” Tom says.

With a few alterations – materials provided by Xtreme Zero Waste - the dining area has been given a more intimate feel.

They will also be working on upgrading the spacious al fresco dining space by adding a kids’ corner and a small petting zoo.

Rivet Exhibition: The Good Dudes Club by Relic

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory provides little surprises around every corner

Illustrator Tegan Byford-Hollows, aka Relic, is influenced by both skate and surf culture.

T

he good dudes club is the first exhibition of Relic’s illustrations to be displayed for the public at Rivet Gallery in Raglan.

Tegan Byford-Hollows, also known as Relic, is an independent illustrator and graphic designer who has recently completed a Bachelor of Media Arts at Wintec majoring in graphic design.

It all started with one art class at Mount Maunganui College where Tegan decided to use the strong influences from the surf and skate culture she was surrounded by to develop her own style of illustration. From here, she refined her technique and style and continued to take art and design classes throughout the rest of her schooling.

The name Relic originally stemmed from a design assignment that was completed in her last year of high school at Sacred Heart Girls College Hamilton.

The design project was about brand that recycles skateboards and refurbishes them to be either artwork or for people to skate again, this concept inspired Tegan to make this project a dream. She then began to collect skateboards and other recycled materials to apply her illustrations to and sell.

Tegan became highly interested in the graphic design and illustration that she left school early to start study at the age of 16. Throughout her study, Tegan adapted styles from artists known as Sheryo, The Yok and McBess.

The illustration style that these artist use consist of bold colours and detailed characters that mostly represent a story or opinion. They are generally impish and

gleeful which reflects heavily in Tegan’s work.

Most of the illustration characters in Relic’s exhibition The Good Dudes Club address problems around politics, global warming and environmental opinions.

These themes then help build the scenario of these characteristics making them original and unique.

Not only does Tegan focus on illustration she also incorporates her style of drawing within her graphic design.

As a result, you will see the deliberate pairing of sophisticated and minimal design structure, which helps Tegan’s work stand out and become known for her specific style.

et your golden tickets ready for Raglan Theatre Academy’s premier production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at the Raglan Town Hall, Saturday, November 25 at 1pm and 7pm and Sunday, November 26 at 1pm.

Roald Dahl’s much-loved book comes to life with director/producer Ruth Hare at the helm and a cast of 60 local young actors aged 6-16 taking their talents to the stage.

This adaptation of sweet-natured Charlie Bucket winning a rare chance to visit Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory will be true to the original story, Ruth says, but expect some creative surprises along the way.

“I always make my shows a little bit special,” she says.

Seasoned young actor Tom Hannan takes on the role of Willy Wonka in what could be his swansong for the Raglan Theatre Academy.

The aspiring local thespian says he was inspired by Johnny Depp’s version of Willy Wonka.

“He’s (Willy Wonka) really awkward and funny and really good to act as,” he says.

“I know the character will get some really good audience reactions.”

Medicines play a central role in helping take pressure off the heart and support someone to live well with a long term condition like heart failure, so understanding what they do and how they work can also help.

Fiona McNabb, an experienced clinical pharmacist, with a special interest and speciality in cardiology, has developed a series of presentations to provide a forum for people with long term conditions to come together and learn more about how to manage their health. Sessions are held once every 4 to 6 weeks on a Saturday morning at The Raglan House in Bow St. The sessions are designed to give those who attend a chance to ask questions, share their experiences and get information about how medicines work, what else they can do besides taking medicines and anything else that is of concern or interest.

The next class, from 10 – 11.30 on Saturday the 2nd of December will focus on Heart Failure. All are welcome – whether you have a diagnosis of heart failure, perhaps your partner or family/ whanau member has HF or you just have a general interest. A koha to cover the room hire and printing costs is invited.

Raglan-based marine science business making waves

Dougal Greer from eCoast.

A

shared passion for the ocean, rivers and water quality has led to a successful international business for six friends.

eCoast Marine Consulting and Research is a small, independent marine and freshwater research consultancy based in Raglan on the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island.

As well as being life-long and passionate surfers and ocean enthusiasts, the company’s directors and employees all hold PhDs or other postgraduate qualifications in coastal science, oceanography, engineering, marine biology and physics.

Since it began five years ago, eCoast has begun to make its mark, both in New Zealand and internationally, with its work in a number of areas, from sustainable coastal development and coastal erosion to surf break monitoring, management and tsunami modelling.

They provide advisory services and technical expertise to clients in New Zealand, Australia, the Pacific and around the world.

About 50 per cent of their current work is international, says co-director and oceanographer Dougal Greer. That means a fair amount of Skype meetings and some travel, with field work to sometimes remote locations.

In the Pacific, a lot of work is around coastal erosion and the impact of development on the ocean. “Water quality is an issue,” says Greer. “Although there is good political will for change, and often environmental law similar to our Resource Management Act, many small

island developing states don’t have internal capacity to put robust systems in place to protect water, as we do in New Zealand.”

They are often called on by regional councils, NGOs and other groups to do research into coastal areas, estuaries and waterways. “We are scientists and we are there to give a scientific point of view,” says Greer. [For more on eCoast’s work, see side bar] The eCoast team includes environmental scientist and managing director Dr Shaw Mead, and a team of four directors – oceanographer and surf scientist Ed Atkin, coastal engineer Jose Borrero, marine ecologist Tim Haggitt and Greer, and senior consultant and civil engineer David Phillips.

“One of the things that bonds us all as a team is water quality – coming from the land, through the rivers and estuaries, and to the sea,” says Greer. “Water quality is an extremely valuable resource in New Zealand, and it’s under a lot of pressure in many places. It is a taonga to protect.”

“We are all passionate about water quality as a topic – it’s not just business for us,” says Greer. “We all enjoy the water – surfing, sailing, fishing and scuba diving – and we understand how important it is to people.”

GROWTH OF THE BUSINESS eCoast began in 2012, and Greer admits that the early years of business were hard.

“You are always busy,” he says. “In the early years of a business you are often caught in the trap of needing to be IN the business and DO the work, but you are also LOOKING for business.”

When they were able to hire their first new employee “it took the pressure off”, says Greer.

Raising awareness and communicating what they did was also a challenge. “When you start you are known as individuals, but your brand is not known, and that’s a big challenge, so getting out and getting in front of people and letting them know what you do is important,” says Greer.

The eCoast team attend a lot of conferences and meet with people to “make opportunities”. As they become better known, word-of-mouth has helped.

Part of that is delivering on their word, and being reliable. “We don’t produce a widget you can sell; every job is different.

So for us it’s about building relationships and trust with people, and part of that is getting work and doing it on time and on budget.”

BUSINESS SUPPORT AND FUNDING eCoast has benefitted from business support and funding over the years – receiving a number of grants to pursue key research projects.

Waikato Innovation Park’s Business Growth team has played a role in assisting eCoast – supporting them to apply for Callaghan Innovation funding.

In October 2016 eCoast received a $30,000 R&D Career Grant towards six months’ work by a recently graduated student, who has since gone on to become a full time employee.

“It was a hugely positive experience for us,” says Greer. “To receive that funding has been massive. It exposes you to the (student) talent that you wouldn’t otherwise necessarily see.”

The grant was on top of several other small grants eCoast had received over the years to pay for undergraduate students to work on R&D projects.

Callaghan Innovation is a Crown entity established in February 2013 to support businesses to increase their investment in research and development.

Greer says the grants meant that important research projects were advanced, that otherwise may not have happened.

“The world of data is expanding, and technology is advancing fast,” says Greer.

“Every day we have ideas of things we could do, but getting the time to do research and development can be hard to find. So getting money from Callaghan Innovation that we can use on projects and for R&D is a total dream.”

Craig Purcell, from the Waikato Business Growth team, says eCoast are making waves in their field. “eCoast is an organisation that has the resilience and determination to keep at things they are passionate about,” says Purcell. “They also have a nice balance of commercial realism that keeps the bills paid and sets them up the nicely for the future.”

The Waikato Business Growth team offers free advice and business support to Waikato-area entrepreneurs and start-ups. It is funded by the Regional Business Partner Network (RBPN) which is supported by New Zealand Trade & Enterprise (NZTE) and Callaghan Innovation.

Their aim is to support businesses who have high-growth aspirations, are export focused, technology-driven or have innovative products or services with real commercial merit.

The team includes business advisors Kahurangi Taylor, Hayley Smith, Peter Davey, Novell Gopal and Waikato mentor manager Tony Kane. They are based at Waikato Innovation Park in Ruakura, Hamilton, but their services are available to companies throughout the wider Waikato region (including Coromandel and Taupo).

Greer says they appreciate all the advice and support they have received.

“Craig gave us great advice and takes a big picture approach,” says Greer. “When you are in the business it’s hard to step out of it and he did that for us. We are scientists

but he came at us with none of that, just pure business advice which was really valuable. It’s very important to get external advice when starting a business.”

Purcell’s assistance with applying for grants was also invaluable. “Thanks to Craig, we found the whole process of applying for funding MUCH easier, and not wrapped in red tape.”

In addition, eCoast have benefitted from business mentoring thanks to Tony Kane, who is the Waikato mentor manager for Waikato Innovation Park. “Tony Kane has helped us a lot with developing a more strategic way of thinking, and meeting with him regularly has been very valuable too.”

To date the Waikato Business Growth team has engaged with more than 1,400 businesses. About 60 per cent of those are outside Hamilton, and once a month advisors travel to seven regional Waikato towns – Thames, Paeroa, Tokoroa, Taupo, Raglan, Huntly and Tuakau – to meet with start-ups and other businesses.

ECOAST - KEY PROJECTS MAPPING WAIKATO ESTUARIES For more than 10 years eCoast has been modelling water quality on the Waikato’s west coast. The project has involved working with local communities and the Waikato Regional Council, and creating computer models to simulate the movement of water and contaminants from land to the marine environment. “We have been able to simulate how fresh water comes into the harbours and how the tides and winds move it around, and we could see how any contaminants get flushed out of the harbours,” says Greer, who currently leads the project.

Greer says the issue of how harbours are affected by pollution from rivers, sewage spills and other sources of contamination is a concern for councils around New Zealand. “Estuaries are extremely important areas; they are highly productive, and are breeding and nursery grounds for many marine species, so healthy estuaries are really important from that point of view,” says Greer. “They are also incredibly sensitive, they are the culmination of everything you do on the land. For some people estuaries are in the ‘too hard basket’ – they are not rivers but they are not the sea – they are something in between, so they haven’t got a lot of attention.

There is a change in thinking about estuaries now, and that’s really exciting.”

PLANNING FOR TSUNAMIS The team from eCoast have been studying tsunamis for a number of years, including computer modelling of worst-case tsunami events for the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions, and for New Zealand more broadly, for the purposes of responding to tsunami events.

Detailed computer modelling can identify areas in a port or harbour which are particularly vulnerable to tsunami induced currents, and help councils and authorities plan accordingly.

PROTECTING SURF BREAKS As surfers, the eCoast team are interested in sustainably managing surf breaks and coastlines – personally as well as professionally.

Recently, eCoast was in the news talking about the company’s research into how surf breaks work, and how they should be managed.

Five cameras are being mounted at key surf breaks around New Zealand, including Raglan’s Manu Bay, Piha, Whangamata, Lyall Bay in Wellington and Wainui Beach in Gisborne, with additional data coming from cameras at Aramoana and Whareakeake, Otago.

The measuring, modelling and monitoring is ongoing, and is a project that will set another resource management precedent for New Zealand on the international stage.

OTHER INTERNATIONAL WORK “We’ve done lots of work relating to climate change in the islands – Fiji, Tonga, Kiribati, Mauritius, the Seychelles and the Marshall Islands. One thing about climate change and the sea level rising is that people are experiencing it as erosion, and with each storm the waters come up higher and there is more erosion.”
