We have received a letter and email from the WDC and HCC advising us that we are no longer able to use the Hamilton Libraries.

Like Upper Wainui Road, we have just had the end of Otonga Valley Road Contact: Administrator Jan Mitchell ph 825 5122 patched up. This was done a couple of years ago, but the heavy trucks that turn into and out of the road soon rip it up. I spoke to one of the workers at the time and he said that a more substantial repair should have been done but they can only do as they are told.

2015 I spent some time in the reserve clearing out the gorse, blackberry, Himalayan honeysuckle, ragwort, thistle, wild walnut, etc. and all I asked of the council was to take the rubbish away.

This seemed to be an onerous task. The response I got was to be told that from April 2016, due to OSH legislation, the only tool I am allowed to go into the reserve with is a pruning saw with all its teeth filed off.

However as from August 2016 the council will be engaging a contractor to keep the reserves clear on a 6 monthly cycle. Judging by the amount of ragwort and thistle and the other things that are now coming back no one has been in there at all, yet someone is getting paid as if they had.

All that time and money I spent cleaning up the reserve so that the public could walk through it and enjoy it is now wasted and the council couldn’t give a tinker’s cuss.

As far as your no spray fee goes Gillian, I think it is in the vicinity of $180 not $80 and you will still be paying the $20 a year levy in your rates that they charge for spraying the roadside.

I had the same problem a couple of years back when the council were spraying the flowers that I was planting along the roadside.

Locals digging in for coastal care and protection

The original Raglan Taxi Bus driver, Dave Brown, passed away peacefully on the 19th August 2018. Dave was big part of Te Mata School for so many years, very supportive of the Raglan bus service and he will be sadly missed. A memorial service was to be held at Rosehill Village Community Hall 182 Gleneagles Drive, Te Awamutu at 1pm this Thursday. haingaroa and Ruapuke Coastcare groups are planting up a storm around Raglan in the name of coastal protection and restoration.

Thousands of native coastal grasses and forest species have been lovingly planted by green-fingered, environmentallyminded locals around the area.

Keen planters have worked to restore the backdunes at Papahua, the slopes by the Wainamu carpark, coastline south of Ruapuke and both north and south Ruapuke carparks. In addition, foredune areas by

the kokiri centre and along Ocean Beach have been filled with young kowhangatara (spinifex) and pingao.

Organised by Waikato Regional Council Coastcare co-ordinator Stacey Hill, she says winter is the best time for planting so the seedlings have a better chance at survival.

“I’m so happy to see the rain at the moment.”

Students from Te Uku School, Raglan Area School, Te Mata School and members of the local community have been digging in to support the ecosystem and Stacey says their efforts at protecting the dunes will help lessen coastal hazards and erosion, as

well as providing habitat for special plants and animals.

“Sand dunes are part of the natural character of coastlines. They play an important role filtering water and often hold intrinsic cultural and archaeological values. They provide an essential flexible buffer protecting coastal communities and are our natural barrier to the sea – but this only works if the specially adapted coastal plants are growing well and supporting this natural dune function.”

Stacey says Angeline Greensill leads the Whaingaroa Coastcare efforts and has been an environmental warrior for many years, with Jenny Carter and Penny

Knuiman leading Ruapuke Coastcare plantings with support from Simon Thomson.

Waikato Coastcare is a partnership between the local community, iwi, district councils and Waikato Regional Council, and the various groups are kaitiaki for 24 beaches on the east and west coasts of the Waikato region.

“I coordinate this programme on the Waikato’s West Coast and get to work with some amazing volunteers from Port Waikato right down to near Awakino. I feel so lucky to work in this space. There are so many beautiful spots down this coast and it feels great to restore these areas. I can't wait to see these sites grow,” Stacey says.

News update from Raglan Community House

his week we sat down for a T chat with Raglan Community House Manager Mike Rarere.

What services are currently on offer at The Raglan house?

The Raglan Community House currently provides the Building Financial Capability Service, Low Cost Counselling Service and Free Drug and Alcohol Counselling.

The Building Financial Capability Service (formerly the Budgeting Service) is facilitated by Noelene Manufui on Thursdays and Fridays. This free service has 2 components: The Financial Mentor component provides one to one mentoring for those who want help to manage their money, develop an individual plan to improve their current situation and better understand their money personality.

The Money Mates component uses groupwork and workshops to learn new skills and develop support around the individuals participating.

What new developments have there been? New staff etc?

Noelene brings a fresh face and new ideas to our services. The next free workshops are 'Learn about Tenancy Law' 10am-12pm Thursday August 30 and 'Learn about Consumer Law' 10am-12pm Friday August 31 in the Raglan Community House Basement Meeting Room. Contact us to reserve your place on 07-8258142.

Low Cost Counselling is available with our two experienced Counsellors on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Rates start at $10 for Community Service Card Holders.

Our Free Drug and Alcohol Counselling is a collaboration with Pai Ake Solutions and is available every Wednesday.

This year we have welcomed several new members to our team, including Lara Toxward as the House's Financial Administrator, Noelene Manufui as Financial Mentor, and Maryann Tuao as the Community House Youth Development Worker. Lara brings a positive and fresh approach to our administration. She is at the Community House full-time and supports the Manager to meet the needs of this Community. Maryann joined our team earlier this year and is developing projects including the Raglan Youth Innovation Project and Raglan's Youth Week Project to provide activities, workshops, events and

A

s council upgrades on the community concerned with the stormwater network the consultation process came on Wainui Road began this Monday, August 20, members of out to protest the new upgrades.

The current resource consent AUTH105646 allows for diversion and discharge of Raglan urban stormwater and associated contaminants at multiple locations in to the Whaingaroa Harbour.

The key issue lies with a core condition of the consent that requires council to establish and retain a Tangata Whenua and Key Stakeholder Liason Group to consult with about new works.

Protesters have expressed concern that compliance has not occured for the 2016/2017 year.

In a letter, Hugh Keane, Team Leader, Infrastructure at WDC outlines that if the consultation process has not occured, discharges that would otherwise have been authorised by this consent would in fact be unlawful.

The new upgrades allow for storwater discharge to go straight out in to the harbour without any filtering processes.

he WRAP steering group have some new ways this week for you to complete the housing survey if you haven’t already. The inserted survey from a couple of weeks ago proved a bit tricky for the company who does the inserting and folding of the Chronicle – it turns out that the papers wouldn’t fold automatically in their machine due to the insert, so someone had to hand fold the entire circulation for that week!

So printing directly into the paper was the next best way to go – fill it in and drop-off at any of the collection sites – Raglan Library, Raglan i-site (at the Museum), Raglan Community House, Rock-it Kitchen, 4 Square, Raglan Surf Co, The Herbal Dispensary, Whaingaroa Organic Kai (WOK), The Food Department Raglan West and The Shack.

There is also a new pdf version of the form that you can type directly into, save and email (address is on the form) or print and drop-off.

WRAP have a new Facebook page too, where were you can download the form and catch up on news about the project and housing issues, what other communities are doing and our next event – the Raglan Housing Forum on the 3rd of November at The Raglan Town Hall.

The forum is in the planning stages, but WRAP expect to be able to share the early results from the survey and other research that is underway. There will be speakers and lots of interesting information about housing and ideas on how to make your existing house more affordable to live in.

There’s a buzz going on about housing in town – lots of street conversations and lots of forms flowing into the collection boxes. If you haven’t already filled it in, do it now, the collection will close on the 22nd of September.

The most inspiring story of the week is the person who removed their property from AirBnB to place it back into the long term rental market after reading the Chronicle article about the family having to leave town because they couldn’t find a place to live – this is the power of sharing our stories.

Saving the rhinos: Journey to South Africa with Aeronavics

O

n Saturday, July 30, 2018, Linda Bulk, director of Raglan-based drone company Aeronavics, and Hadley BoksWilson, Flight Engineer, took off to South Africa. Some 18 months earlier they were approached

by Sarah Jones from the Raglan charitable trust supporting rhino conservation, ‘Tusk and Horn Wildlife Trust’.

At that time, Sarah had just returned from a trip to South Africa that she had undertaken with Peter Eastwood from the Auckland based charitable trust ‘Tanglewood Foundation’. During this trip they had met with world renowned wildlife vet and rhino specialist Dr William Fowlds, famous for his work in rhino conservation and rehabilitation. In 2012 William and his team managed to save their very first rhino from certain death after having fallen victim to a vicious poaching attack. It made headlines worldwide and propelled him into instant fame, a position he never aspired to, but which he reluctantly accepted in his quest to raise support for the fight against the soaring rhino poaching crisis.

Sarah and Peter spent some time with William in the field, and in one instance witnessed how he deployed a drone to locate a rhino.

William explained how he believed that drone technology could be highly useful for conservation work, especially if it could provide night vision to support security teams in patrolling reserves. But this particular drone didn’t have this capability, and resources were limited.

Knowing of Aeronavics right in her hometown, Sarah planned to visit them on her return to discuss options.

“When Sarah contacted us we instantly wanted to help,” says Linda. “Both Rob (Rob Brouwer, co-director) and I were deeply moved by her relay of what was going on in South Africa, and by the gruesome imagery she showed us of the unimaginable suffering inflicted on this magnificent species by humankind.”

It took 18 months to pull it off, developing a number of prototypes before ending up with one they believed would do the job. Both Sarah’s and Peter’s trusts also helped with some of the expenses,

including plane tickets for Flight Engineer Hadley, and William’s foundation ARCC (African Rhino Conservation Collaboration) funded the thermal camera.

“The weeks leading up to departure had been crazy busy,” Linda says, “with especially Hadley spending countless hours of his own time into perfecting the prototype, which he named ‘Rhino Bavi’. It is a quad rotor model which flies for about 45 minutes and can withstand a high degree of wind, common especially at this time of year in the region of South Africa it will be deployed. It can comfortably fly several kilometres away without losing contact with the radio and video controls, and carries a normal camera and a

poachers to strike. Unfortunately, this is by no means a guarantee.

With rhino horn being worth more than its weight in gold on the black market, even a few centimetres of remaining horn have proven to be worthwhile for poachers to slash the animals’ faces open”.

The procedure brought Linda to tears she relays. “It was heart wrenching to see this magnificent creature lying helplessly on the ground, sedated but aware, as his pride and glory, his defining feature, was sawn of his head. You can just imagine their terror as the penetrating noise of a chainsaw is cutting into their horn just inches away from their face, followed by a grinder to remove the remainder.

but as of 2018 the actual numbers are likely to be fewer than this. The northern white rhino subspecies has been reduced to just two living in East Africa. The three species of rhino in Asia are also threatened by the demand for rhino horn. As of the end of 2017 there are an estimated 3333 greater one-horned rhino (Indian rhino), and around 67 of the Javan species, and officially less than 100 (but estimated as few as 30) rhinos of the Sumatran species left in the wild.

If nothing changes we could see this iconic species go extinct in the wild in as little as 20 years, a species that has roamed this planet for over 50 million years.

“This is much bigger than just animal cruelty and human

thermal camera side by side. It has several safety features and can be pre-programmed to fly autonomous missions to assist daily patrols, as well as flown manually to wherever necessary.”

On arrival in Port Elizabeth Linda and Hadley were picked up

by William, who invited them to join a scheduled “rhino procedure”.

They drove with the rest of the team to a nearby reserve, where William explained they would dehorn some rhinos as a preventative measure against poaching. “Rhino horn” he said “exists of keratin, the same substance as human’s finger/toe nails, and grows back if cut above the growth plate. Reserve owners hope that by cutting the horns off, there will be less incentive for

hurt them physically, unlike the brutal force poachers apply as they savage their faces with axes. And I was super impressed with William and his team, with their confidence, kindness and skill. It is just so sad that it’s necessary.”

The rhino horn is mostly trafficked into Asian countries like Vietnam and China, where they are believed to have healing powers and are used in traditional medicine, or simply acquired as a status symbol.

Poaching incidents take place every day, with over a 1000 per year in South Africa alone.

The most recent studies and census estimate that there are roughly 18,000 southern white rhino and 5500 black rhino left in Africa, including their subspecies,

ignorance and greed,” Linda says.

“William wrote an e-book about his first poaching incident titled POACHED!, and in here he says: ‘If we are not able to save the rhino from extinction, this flagship species that’s larger than life, what hope do we have of saving the rest?’. And that’s just it - besides a tragedy in itself, it is a symbol of the state of the world and the extent of human destruction. On the other hand, if we CAN save them from extinction, and I am convinced we can, they can be a symbol of hope. A symbol of inspiration and empowerment”.

Strongly motivated and with a sense of purpose, Linda and Hadley worked throughout the week with the anti-poaching unit (APU) of

Amakhala, the Fowlds family’s game reserve. In between training sessions and practise flights they were treated to some magnificent game drives on the reserve, viewing all sorts of wildlife from elephants to lions to giraffes, rhinos, kudus, antelopes, jackals, zebras, wildebeest, hartebeest, ostriches, plentiful warthogs, all sorts of birds and stunning scenery.

“The APU team already had experience with smaller drones,” Linda says, “which made it a lot easier to train them. Besides, they were highly professional, competent and committed. Great guys, it was a joy to work with them.

We did several flights every day, manually and pre-programmed, including night flights and long range. All went well. We identified some potential improvements and will undoubtedly identify more as the team deploys the system throughout the next couple of months, but as it is it is already a useful tool.”

“We now have to strategize how to make it feasible to deploy this technology on a wide scale,” Linda continues. “The system we delivered is much more powerful and fit for purpose than the smaller, cheaper drones you see en mass on the market, but this comes at a cost.

How can we a) further improve on capability, and b) reduce cost. Even as a non-profit offering the costs are currently too high. We might have to look at a bit of an industry collaboration to achieve this. I will explore this.”

Linda concludes, “This week we have contributed in a small way. I am proud of the performance of the drone even though we can make improvements, and proud of the caring nature of our team as everyone was - and is - very involved and emotionally invested.

But it is little in comparison to the guys (male and female) we met this week at the frontline, who I respect immensely. I personally returned a richer person, and feel indebted to do more, contribute more, to help save the rhinos and all they represent. And this I will do, with Aeronavics and outside.

Te Uku Memorial and District Hall celebrates 50 years

T

he Te Uku Hall has been an integral part of the community and used as a meeting place for variousorganisations and groups over the years, including Young Farmers, Badminton, Bowls, Tennis Club, ArtGroup, Plunket, local schools, dancing groups, church groups, library, exercise groups, weddings, andsocial gatherings.

The original Te Uku War Memorial Hall was built in 1919.

It later became borer-ridden and was eventually demolished to make way for the existing building on the same land.

Two memorial tablets hang in the hall. The Te Uku District Roll of Honour 1914 – 1918 lists the names of 30 local men who served, seven of whom were killed.

The Te Uku and District Roll of Active Service 1939 – 1945 lists

the names and ranks of six men who were killed on active service and 27 men who also served.

The existing hall was built by then local builder Michael Robertson, in 1968. The hall was entirely funded by local residents, with debentures, cash donations, donations of livestock and various fundraising activities in the early 1960s.

The committee were proud to have the hall mortgage free by the time the building was complete.

The active committee and fundraising committees of that time worked tirelessly to provide this facility for the community and the committees going forward from there are proud to have been able to continue to upgrade and maintain the hall over time.

This work has all beenof a voluntary nature and as such the community is one of very few who still wholly own a local hall.

Fishing show host adds Raglan to list of top fishing spots

A

DOS Addicted to Fishing hit Raglan waters to film an episode for Australasia’s only fishing show hosted solely by a female presenter.

Host and producer of ADOS Addicted to Fishing, Nicky Sinden, is passionate getting women out on the water and inspiring others to do the same through her show.

The Raglan episode, filmed in November, recently screened on Prime and is available for viewing on the ADOS Addicted to Fishing Facebook page.

It features Nicky with her friends Rachelle Brisbane and Anthea Stembridge as they head out over the Raglan bar in pursuit of snapper and gurnard.

“Featuring female anglers is part of our point of difference on the show, but it’s not making a stand or anything, it’s just what we do. We love fishing and we just want to be out there having fun - same as the boys.”

It was Nicky’s first experience of angling out of Raglan and she used her recent experiences fishing in Kawhia and Taranaki as a guide to fishing Raglan waters.

“We had a really cool day on the water and caught more than enough for a feed and put the rest back,” she says.

Having just laid her grandmother to rest, Nicky says the Raglan trip was very therapeutic.

“It was such a beautiful way to leave the hustle and bustle behind, put down the phone and focus on what I love to do.”

Hailing from Mangawhai, Nicky says Raglan has a similar vibe, both places being proactive about sustainability.

“Raglan is one of my favourite places to visit,” she says, “I really resonate with the down-to-earth atmosphere of Raglan.

Reminds me of Mangawhai where I live, but on the West Coast. Not to mention it has world class fishing.”

She’s keen to head back to Raglan to film another episode and this time she’s hunting marlin, swordfish or kingfish.

SpiritRides: New Zealand's first Equine yoga class

W

hen a person is passionate about two things and decides to combine them, something magical can happen.

For Stephanie from SpiritRides in Raglan, combining her love of horses and her love of yoga produced just such magic.

Stephanie was born and raised in Germany where she spent a lot of time working with horses, and when she immigrated to New Zealand in 1996 she knew having to be far away from her family could only be made easier by owning horses again. In 2011, SpiritRides was born as a Riding and later Equestrian Vaulting school. Stephanie realised the need for a private one-on-one setting for adults and children on her schooled horses and ponies, many of whom she rescued.

Her Yoga journey began 15 years ago, and for the last three years she has been co-leading a local group of like-minded people, enjoying the journey together in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. She felt there was something missing in yoga classes, and it was FUN. A year ago she qualified as a Rainbow Yoga Kids and Family Instructor and a month later SpiritRides Equine Yoga

was launched. She offers wroup Workshops, and together with her Yoga partner Elisabeth Denis, is venturing into their first retreat near Raglan. The purpose-built Waitetuna Retreat Centre is only 2km on the same road, which makes for a more than ideal team.

Elisabeth has done her yoga teacher training in the magical jungle of Costa Rica. Since then, her journey with yoga has led her to study with a variety of teachers and traditions located in different areas of the globe. However, she now considers Hatha and slow Vinyasa her main styles. Elisabeth taught yoga in her home country of Canada and in Costa Rica. Her first AcroYoga/Thai Massage retreat was created and held in Nicaragua with the help of another acro yoga teacher.

Elisabeth and Stephanie met earlier this year, clicking immediately, and they have decided to venture on this journey of retreats together, combining even more of their passions. Elisabeth's are AcroYoga and meditation, and both love food. So, the combination of Equine Yoga, AcroYoga, meditation and Indian cooking classes was born to offer you a most unique and special experience.

The length of the retreat was chosen by both - an overnight stay is very doable if you are a busy working person and also allows

parents just enough time to get a break without having to sacrifice too much.

They plan to host a few of these retreats over the summer months, so keep an eye on SpiritRides – Raglan Yoga FB page for upcoming events. The first retreat is on Labour Weekend (October 20-21)

with an Early Bird special until the end of August of $280 including accommodation and food. The numbers will not exceed 18, making a nice group to work with and spend the weekend together.

Monthly Equine Yoga Workshops on Saturday mornings will also continue from November

onwards, and can also be booked privately.

unning man Campbell Forlong is putting his stamina to the test in a coast-to-coast run from Mount Maunganui to Raglan, and it’s all in the name of charity.

Running the 160kms, Campbell hopes to raise money for muchneeded roof repairs at Agora

Café and Event Centre, a popular Frankton haunt for people wanting their coffee dollar to help those in need.

Campbell has a long-time affinity with Raglan. It’s been his go-to fishing destination since his teens, he ran the New Year’s summer programme at the Kopua Camping Ground with his wife Lorraine and was a regular visitor

when he was Linkup Paint Supplies sales rep.

He took up long distance running 13 years ago and ran his first marathon aged 40. When he turned 50 he decided to up the ante and, on his birthday, ran from Hamilton to Raglan and back.

He has since done it many times and says his favourite part of the run is getting to the top of the divvy.

“It’s so beautiful when you get to the top with the wind turbines and Karioi in the background, and you know you’re at the half-way point.”

Making it to Raglan is also a buzz and he ends the run with a dip at the Bow Street jetty, a coffee at any one of the great cafes and a walk along Ngarunui Beach.

He will start his coast to coast run at 6am on Friday, August 31 at Mount Maunganui and hopes to be in Raglan at the Bow Street jetty before the sun goes down on Saturday, September 1. Campbell is inviting runners to join any stage of the run by sending a private message on Facebook.

Originally an old clothing factory, Agora was purchased and renovated by City Bible Church 13 years ago and over the past 10 years Agora Community Trust has

donated over $128,000 to local charities and community groups.

They also work with Red Cross Refugee Services to provide funds, space, employment and training, and a free English language night class for many former refugees.

A Community Trust and City Bible Church trustee, Campbell says Agora has long needed a new roof, gutters and spouting and has started a Give-a-little page for people to contribute to the organisation that has given so much to others.
