Punk band The Hard Ons play at the Yot Club

A 1987 Beat magazine article described their sound as “Motörhead meets the Beach Boys”; Allmusic’s Jody McGregor describes it as a “mix of punk, pop, and metal” with “dashes of power pop, psychedelic rock, thrashy metal, and a healthy dose of humor”.

The Hard-Ons have carved a niche in the world of punk rock and have assembled a cult following of fans worldwide. They are Australia’s most successful independent band, with over 250,000 records sold worldwide and 17 consecutive No. 1 hits on the Australian alternative charts.

Still absolutely buoyant from their 30th anniversary tour and the worldwide release of their best album-todate, “Peel Me Like A Egg”, Sydney’s colourful rocking identities the Hard-

This explosive yet deeply melodic line up of one of Australia’s most unique and action-packed rock and roll bands will perform a set bristling with both beauty and brutality, as they explore their vast back catalogue and, more importantly, introduce new material that has only just been hammered brilliantly into shape by this incarnation!

Raglan Surf Co goes left

E

arlier this week, the Hughes family closed the doors to the old Raglan Surf Co building for the very last time. They took with them 25 years of memories, that have since become the foundation of their new home, just two doors down.

For anyone who has been through town in the past few months, you might have noticed the old Vinnies building getting a bit of a facelift. With some fresh paint, new signs and some proper TLC, the Hughes family has brought new life into one of Raglan’s oldest buildings.

The late Craig Hughes opened Surf Co with his wife, Liz, in 1992, fuelled by his passion for surfing, his talent for making surfboards and his deep love for Raglan.

The Surf Co quickly became one of Raglan’s most progressive surfboard factories in New Zealand, with mastercraftsman Craig at the helm and a handful of skilled locals backing him up.

In the early 2000s, the manufacturing side of things moved just out of town, which allowed Surf Co to further evolve as a retail shop through the vision of Craig and Liz. The pair took the building from a dusty factory into what would be known for a time as “Raglan’s surf shop”, and a home away from home for both the Hughes family and many others.

With the passing of Craig in 2013, new changes presented themselves to the family, and a collective decision was made to find a new home for Raglan Surf Co and continue what their father had started.

Like Raglan Surf Co, the old Vinnies building holds a history all its own.

fitting that the two local icons have been moulded into one.

And while the past 10 years have seen various food offerings coming out of Vinnies, the remodelled space seems to perfectly hold its new occupants.

In the middle of the freshly finished (surf)board room upstairs, stands the very first board shaped by Craig when he was just 14-years-old. A representation of his legacy, a taonga of the Hughes family.

The new board room will serve as the home base for Hughes Surfboards, the family label established by their father over 15 years ago. The room is a place where surfers young and old can go, whether beginners or advanced, and take advantage of the knowledge of the Hughes family.

With more space to work with, comes the opportunity to further expand and share their surfing experiences both in and out of the water. It is also a space where custom board ideas can become a reality—utilising the knowledge passed down by Craig, they

continue to shape and finish the boards locally.

To complement the board room, there is a hire room downstairs where both boards and wetsuits will be available. The addition of these areas connects Surf Co full circle to the original passion of their father.

The move lays ground for a new chapter of their story to be written and gives the family and their third generation surfer children the opportunity to evolve Raglan Surf Co and Hughes Surfboards in a new and vibrant space.

A space where they can share what Surf Co is, not just as a “surf shop” but as a place where anyone can walk in off the street and learn the fundamentals of surfing through the legacy of Craig.

Raglan Surf Co can now be found at 7 Wainui Road, with the same great quality and service as before. Stop by their new space to say hello, share your memories of the old building and start making new ones with them.

Word Cafe 2017: Local writers share insights and inspiration The authors will be talking about their just or soon to be released books. The books, all penned in Raglan, span a diverse range of genres, from fiction to memoir to personal development.

Stephanie Philp and Bernadette Gavin are part of a panel discussing “local books in the making”. Bernadette, who grew up in Raglan and is well known in the community as a yoga teacher, mother and activist, is in the process of writing a memoir that interweaves her four-year sailing adventure and accompanying journey of self-discovery.

“Writing can be such a private affair and in my case, after being squirrelled away busily writing for so long, it is nice to have an opportunity to share my experience,” says Bernadette.

International neuro-linguistic programming trainer Stephanie Philp has just finished her book, The Resilience Book, the fifth she has written.

“Resilience is a word that’s bandied about a Wanda Barker. fair bit these days. As a coach I see many people ive local authors will be taking centrestage who have ‘patchy’ resilience. Poet and artist Wanda Barker is appearing twice at the festival. On the Friday night (June 30) she joins fellow poets in the Spoken Poetry Showcase, the festival’s opening event. The showcase features four poets performing their work, and is a free community event, following on from the official festival opening at 7pm.

Then on Sunday (July 2), Wanda is launching All Her Dark Pretty Thoughts, a poetry novella that tells the story of an ordinary well-heeled woman’s growing defiance against the hurts and constraints of her failing marriage.

“The poetic content and language in the novella is explicit,” says Wanda. “Although the themes of relationship failure, mental health, addictions, and sexual and verbal violence and its impacts on women will be familiar to many readers.”

So come along and celebrate the extraordinary literary talent that we have within our town. One of Word Café’s aims is to provide a forum where that talent can be recognised, celebrated and shared. Also launching their new book on the Sunday are well-known Raglan couple Latesha Randall and Sebastian Walter (of Raglan Coconut Yoghurt fame).

The book, entitled The To Be-List, grew out of Latesha’s growing realisation that she wanted to spend less time “doing”, and more time “being”. What started out as a 5-year blogging project has now been picked up by an American publisher and transformed into an inspirational guide of how to do less and be more.

Latesha says: “The book is 70 short chapters to help shift the focus from just setting goals and ‘doing’ to developing character qualities and positive ways of thinking about life - ‘being’.

They’re perfect bite size chapters to read one a day in the morning or before going to sleep for some encouragement and inspiration.”

Latesha and Sebastian will hold a short Q+A, followed by vegan cake at the Town Hall and you can also purchase the book for a special price of $20 at the launch.

ake a wander through Bush Park Wainui during the week and you could well come across a small group of pre-schoolers building huts and feeding eels in the stream, stringing their own “spiderwebs” between trees and frolicking with the fantails that flit just out of reach.

It is this secluded valley, which only locals seem to know about, that has become over the past year the extended outdoor play area for 10 of the oldest children from the childcare centre in Wallis Street – known now as Magnolia Tree Raglan but formerly Raglan Childcare & Education Centre.

“It’s our backyard,” laughs Magnolia Tree manager Anne Snowden of the 10-hectare Waikato District Council-owned reserve.

Every Tuesday and Friday morning – rain or shine – the centre’s 4 year olds are dropped off at the park by their parents, with lunchboxes and a spare change of clothes in their backpacks for the day.

Two teachers are there to meet them and supervise the day’s activities.

They and their young proteges stay till two in the afternoon when Raglan Shuttle picks them up and returns them to the childcare centre.

The programme – adopted after staff went to an inspirational all-outside, threeday conference in Auckland called Natural Phenomena – has been “an awesome success”, Anne says.

Feedback from parents and children has all been positive, she adds, “and it’s such a great opportunity for kids”.

The youngsters are allowed to get muddy or wet, they explore, problem-solve and discover simple things like the magicallooking red toadstools growing around the park’s dampest walking tracks.

There are big ones with flat tops and little ones with rounded tops, teacher Jane Moreton explains. The kids get to study their

colour and shape, where exactly they grow and why. “They’re fascinated and ask lots of questions.”

They can now also name the birds and trees at the bush park, she says.

And they not only feed but also fish for eels in the Wainui Stream which meanders through the park. “They’ve pulled up only one eel onto the bank so far,” Jane adds.

“They were squealing, then one of the boys threw it straight back in.”

Getting out in nature is the basis of the programme, and is described very specifically in the childcare centre’s strategic plan: “We want our tamariki to develop a sense of wonder, curiosity, freedom and respect for Tane, Tangaroa and Papatuanuku by connecting with nature and the natural world through play and exploration here at our own doorstep.”

Bush Park days can even include making camp bread and cooking sausages under the trees on a portable gas stove.

Outside of bush kindy there are other outings within walking distance of the Magnolia Tree centre – to the wharf, playgrounds and the beach, where at low tide they look for crabs.

There’s a big drive at most childcare centres now to do something in the great outdoors, Jane explains, to offset the time today’s children spend on technology and to foster a confident “I can do” attitude.

“We just wanted to share with the community that we are here and this is what we do,” Anne sums up.

There are also plans to relocate the centre’s office at the entranceway so Anne is more available to staff, children and parents.

Six months on from when Rachael and Steve Thomas bought the centre there’s now a website up and running and a Facebook page and new signage on the way.

There are also plans for teacher swaps for a day at a time between the Wallis Street centre and its sister Magnolia Tree Childcare in Whatawhata.

Funding sees Xtreme Waste roll out food waste collection

he food-scraps of Raglan residents will be turned into a super food for plants come August, thanks to a $150,000 grant from the Government’s Waste Minimisation Fund.

Xtreme Waste Zero will be rolling out a food waste collection service to the town after completing a five-year trial of 100 households in Raglan West.

Associate Environment Minister Scott Simpson was in Raglan on Tuesday last week to announce the funding for the new food waste collection, diversion and composting service.

Xtreme Zero Waste spokesperson Liz Stanway says Raglan is leading the way, nationally, in reducing the amount of waste going to landfill by collecting food waste to make high-quality compost.

“Diverting food waste from landfill is quite common overseas and is going to be a normal thing in New Zealand,” says Liz, who has been in charge of the food collection trials and setting up the composting operation at Xtreme Zero Waste.

“We have to get the food waste out of landfill where it makes acidic leachate and methane, a greenhouse gas and a major contributor to climate change.

“Food waste is a heavy component of landfill across the country so many councils are looking at initiating food waste collections.

We should see Raglan’s landfill volumes go down another 10 per cent.”

Liz says Xtreme Waste Zero, which is breeding its own tiger worms for part of the

composting programme, has been selling its “Super Food” compost from the trial for the last four years and it is very popular.

“It is amazing, people love it – it disappears off the stand really quickly. It has been trialled by Kaiwhenua Organics and we have been growing great veges with it in our own commercial gardens.

“The worms really polish the compost up, give it lots of life. That’s the point of difference in our compost. A lot of the commercial composts that have been sterilised by heat can be quite microbially dead.”

In preparation for the food collection service, a large composting unit is being built onsite at Xtreme Zero Waste.

At 30 metres long, 2m wide and 2m high, it consists of three compartments representing three stages of the composting process – the final stage is when the worms will be added.

The turnaround to produce compost is expected to be 12 weeks.

Chipped green waste will be added to the food scraps to make the compost.

“It’s sort of like baking a cake. The food waste is the butter and the green waste the flour – the moisture levels have to be just right.

“The resource consent is quite specific – exactly what the recipe is.”

The process will be strictly monitored to make sure it is composting well and that there are no odours.

“The main concern from neighbours was odour. We want to be really careful about that.”

Xtreme Zero Waste will be asking residents not to put fish in their food scraps for collection because it is stinky, and no frying or vegetable oils because they do not compost well.

“We are going to put a lot of effort into communication in the first year on how to use this service,” says Liz. Collection days will be on the same day as the usual rubbish and recycling service.

Xtreme Zero Waste has bought a new multi-purpose truck that has a leak-proof compartment for food waste collection.

Each property will receive a food waste collection kit of compostable bags, a kitchen caddy and a kerbside bin with lockable handles to prevent dog strike.

The compostable bags are used in the smaller kitchen bins. When full they are tied off and the waste stored in the larger outside bin until collection day.

Liz says Xtreme Zero Waste anticipates that about 4-8 cubic metres of food waste will be collected from the community every week.

The collection service will be free for one year, covered by funding from Waikato District Council. It will be reviewed in the Long Term Plan process to see if the community wants to include the cost in their rates.

Xtreme Zero Waste relations manager Rick Thorpe says the desire is to have a costneutral system, where the number of pre-paid blue bags used for rubbish will be reduced due to the removal of food waste.

“With less waste and no bad smells of rotting food in rubbish people won’t have to put out blue bags as often.”

Rick says he’s excited about the food collection service.

“It’s about building further resilience in Raglan.”

The new service creates more local employment, and he’d also like to see a commercial growing enterprise started “once we have a consistent volume of high-quality compost being made” that could provide more jobs and training opportunities.

Para Kore reach more marae with $800,000 cash injection

aglan-based Para Kore has received nearly $800,000 in government funding to extend its marae waste minimisation project in the North Island.

Former kiwi supermodel Rachel Hunter was spotted in Raglan this past week, with photos of herself around town and other nearby landmarks posted to her social media accounts. She described Raglan as a "mystical and magical place".

Para Kore general manager Jacqui Forbes says the money from the Waste Minimisation Fund will allow the programme to be set up in marae in Ruapehu, the Far North, Wellington, Hawke’s Bay, Rotorua, Gisborne and the East Coast, with the vision being to have all marae working towards zero waste by 2020.

The Para Kore programme, which was initiated by the Waikato District Council and started under Xtreme Zero Waste in 2009, is now independently and successfully operating in several regions, including Taranaki, Bay of Plenty, Waikato, Hauraki, and Raukawa.

So far, 171 marae are taking part in the programme, and have diverted 178 tonnes of waste from landfill.

The Para Kore programme works with marae to increase the reuse, recycling and composting of materials.

The funding will be used to hire the right person to deliver the programme in each region, and provide training, resources – such as wheelie bins – and ongoing support.

Jacqui says each project takes about three years to deliver and costs about $133,000.

Para Kore has been applying to the Waste Minimisation Fund every year with success.

“We are really appreciative of the local tangata whenua and Whaingaroa who have supported Para Kore from inception,” says Jacqui.

The Waste Minimisation Fund was established in 2009 and is funded by a levy of $10 per tonne charged on waste disposed of at landfills.

The fund’s purpose is to boost New Zealand’s performance in waste minimisation, by reducing waste and increasing the recovery of useful resources from waste.

Over $80 million has been awarded to more than 130 projects to date.

The school received $5450 from the fund, which supports local communities where Meridian has wind farms and hydro stations, to buy mountainbikes as part of its sustainable sports programme.

RAS sports coordinator Sam Cowley says she applied to the Power Up fund to buy the mountainbikes to increase the participation of students who aren’t involved in mainstream sports such as netball, soccer and rugby.

“It’s to get kids moving and get them engaged, ignite some passion. And it coincided with the Kakariki mountainbike track opening so it was good timing.

“It’s fun and it’s cool, and it’s being in nature.

The kids are loving it and we are getting more kids signing up every day.”

Sam says the weekly school mountainbike programme is also about encouraging more kids to

get on bikes – giving them the skills to ride safely and confidently.

More than 20 kids have registered for lunchtime mountainbike lessons with Raglan Rock founder Gareth Jones at the BMX track at Kopua Domain.

“The jumping side is the fun part but the focus is on cycle safety for kids,” says Gareth, who is proud of his students’ achievements.

“If we want to create cyclists in Raglan we need to be sure they are safe.

“The track teaches them cornering and how to go on and off the brakes. Not being on the flat ground takes a lot of understanding.

“The idea is to progress to the mountainbike track.”

Student Harry Carter, 9, says he’s really enjoying learning to do jumps.

The new bikes are great and easy to use, he says.

“Really smooth and easier to jump” then his old bike, he reckons.

“It’s just having fun.”

Waikato District Council advises that at their meeting on 31 May 2017 they adopted the Fees and Charges 2017/18. The adoption of the Fees and Charges has incorporated changes to swimming pool inspection fees, road signs and interim charges for new house builds.

The Fees and Charges come into effect on 1 July 2017 and can be viewed on our website www.waikatodistrict.govt.nz/your-council/fees-and-charges.
