coordinator Kathy Gilbert.

She views her community as a larger part of that whanau and believes that nurturing safe and caring neighbourhoods and communities is vital to reducing

“I see all of us as one big family and the beauty about Neighbourhood Support is it covers people from all different backgrounds.”

Kathy will be a familiar face to many, she volunteered at the Raglan police station from 20062014 as watch house officer before volunteer roles were phased out across the country.

She moved to Raglan in 1998 to house-sit at Upper Bow St for Baha’i couple Miette and the late Murray Smith while they were away in Haifa, Israel - Murray was then deputy secretary-general of the Baha’i International Community.

A Baha’i herself, Kathy has worked as a volunteer in Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, on a Native American reservation, and believes service to community is important for personal wellbeing.

Kathy says communities like Raglan, where many houses are unoccupied for long periods of time, benefit enormously from having Neighbourhood Support groups operating.

“Our neighbours are potentially the first people to notice anything amiss and if they are connected it makes it much easier to communicate information to one another and to the police, if need be.”

Neighbourhood Support tips for keeping your home secure over the holiday season: • Shut and lock all doors, even if you're only going out for a short time.

• Close and lock all windows - burglars don't like to smash glass.

• Do not "hide" keys outside your home, nor leave them in an obvious place near doors or windows.

• Make sure your valuables including televisions and stereo systems - cannot be seen from outside.

• Make your home look occupied when you're away by using timers on radios and lights • When you buy new items like DVD players or video recorders, don't advertise by leaving the empty boxes out for recycling, turn the boxes inside out and fold them down.

• Hide or lock away passports and official documents - identity fraud is on the rise.

• Don't leave car keys near doors or windows - car theft through burglary is also on the rise.

• Consider engraving your property - this puts thieves off because it makes it harder to resell.

• Ensure you have an up to date list and photographs of your valuables and keep copies in a safe place.

• Record product serial numbers and register them on www.snap.org.nz. The website can assist the police and your insurance claim, and makes it easier to track your stolen property.

Rural communities are more attuned to this concept of looking out for one another, she says, and Ruapuke Neighbourhood Support group is a good example of this.

“There can be a burglary happening at the beach end and by the time they get to the other end at Te Papatapu Rd, the police are waiting for them,” she laughs.

Working closely with the police and other organisations in the community, Neighbourhood Support promotes and supports the development of Neighbourhood Support groups throughout New Zealand.

Neighbourhood Support has access to support and resources that helps neighbourhoods solve local problems, reduce crime, learn to prepare and cope with civil defence emergencies and much more.

Kath says knowing the skills of the community is a great asset that Neighbourhood Support can share in times of emergencies, but also in times when a neighbour might just need a helping hand.

“Being a part of a group is a really great help to the vulnerable people in our community.”

olin Chung and his team of helpers are organising another midday Christmas dinner at the Raglan Town Hall, on Christmas Day. “If you are finding yourself alone, or without extended family, or for some reason you may not be able to have a Christmas dinner this year then come on down as it’ll be like any other family Christmas dinner, the family just happens to be the Raglan community, and the home happens to be the town hall” says Colin who extends an open invitation to anyone in our Whaingaroa community.

Colin & his team of helpers are once again preparing a delicious feast including turkey, ham, lamb, sushi, mussels, salmon and loads of salads and vegetables - they can however, use extra desserts, so if anybody is making dessert for your own dinner, make another for us and just bring it down to the Town Hall before 12 noon on Xmas day.

This annual occasion will be a day to remember with Xmas carols being sung, plus local musicians providing entertainment.

La La Land combines sweet delights and European charm in a one-stop chocolate shop

aglan’s newest eatery La La Land opened its doors recently offering a bounty of tasty treats for the discerning sweet tooth with plenty vegan and gluten-free options.

Selling organic, fair trade chocolate from master chocolate makers around New Zealand, including Whaingaroa’s own Raglan Chocolate, Honest chocolate from Matakana, Hogarth from Nelson, Swiss Bliss from Matakana and She Universe from Christchurch, owner Monika Suchecka is very pleased with the reception she has had so far.

“The feedback I have had is so positive – my heart is melting every day,” she says.

She also sells delectable glutenfree cake, gluten-free waffles, gluten-free real hot chocolate, coffee and other sweet delights.

Monika uses a churro batter for her delectable waffles and the sweet selection includes salted chocolate caramel, fresh cream, brownie -

dulce de leche and candied pecans – fresh fruit and cream – toasted marshmallow cream and torched marshmallow.

Originally from Poland, Monika has transformed the flower shop next to Orca into a chocolate shop with a European twist.

Investing a lot of time and energy into creating the look she desired, Monika has sourced European-inspired décor, scoured Kaahu’s Nest for furniture she could upcycle and she’s added lovely family-friendly touches with wooden toys under the pohutukawa tree out the front.

Taking inspiration for the shop from the movies Chocolat and La La Land, which combines her two great loves of chocolate and jazz, Monika’s added a piano to the little chocolate shop and hopes to inspire locals to come in and play some tunes.

Monika says Raglan is full of hidden talent and sometimes the most unlikely people will surprise with their passion for music.

“An electrician came in with dirty big boots and asked if he could play – he was amazing.”

Having worked in hospitality around Europe including seven years in Dublin, Monika moved to New Zealand six years ago to continue working in the industry she is passionate about. She is also a wedding photographer - something she loves and continues to do.

“I’ve been in hospitality for so long and I treated each workplace as my own. I felt like I was investing a lot of energy into someone else’s dream,” she says.

It’s a dream come true to finally put her own stamp on a food business she can feel proud of and truly make her own.

And, being able to live in Raglan is the sweet icing on the top of that dream.

“I had always dreamed of opening a shop with a big tree out the front so when I found this place, I couldn’t believe my luck. It’s so beautiful here – I love the children climbing the tree outside, seeing

them swimming and jumping from the bridge. We are so lucky to have such beautiful nature around us.”

Boot-load of organic produce a taste of what’s to come from rustic farm shop

f you think country stores are a thing of the past, then a rustic grocery that’s sprouting up in rural Raglan may make you think again.

The Little Kauroa Farm Shop – which will specialise in fresh, organic produce – is set to open early in the new year just off Te Mata Rd. All the venture’s waiting on now is for one or two tradies to finish off the store that Pond Rd farmer Jo Bloomer has long envisioned.

Meantime “it’s all go here on the farm,” she told the Chronicle – and to illustrate her point sent on-site gardener Sez Fitzpatrick into Raglan recently laden with baskets of vegetables and herbs for locals to sample.

Grown in soil fertilised by sheep manure from under the shearing shed on Ratanui farm – part of the old Kauroa block – the veggies “came screaming out of the ground”, Jo reckons. “No tunnel houses, no plastic.”

Having established this year – with partner Ross Loveridge – a premium firewood business from onetime tornado-strewn trees across the property, Jo’s now on a mission to sell other “stuff” off the historic farm she describes as a garden of Eden.

Jo and Sez got busy in spring making garden girl scarecrows that emit bird-repellent sounds, raising crops from seeds and caring for a very old organic orchard.

The shop has been built using timber and relics salvaged from disused farm buildings, including windows unearthed from an old shed. All that’s needed now are a few finishing touches.

It’s to be a “destination” shop, Sez explains, where locals can come and buy from locals.

Ideally others in the area will also want to pitch in, selling their own handicrafts and produce such as honey, eggs and milk.

“It’s not about (making a) huge profit,” she stresses.

Surfer's Code signs going up

urfers to Ngaranui Beach, Manu Bay and Whale Bay will soon be seeing new 'Surfers Code' signs near the water.

Thanks to local funding by the Raglan Point Boardriders and a grant from Waikato District Council, the new signs will be up just in time for summer.

With the water getting busier and busier, knowing the rules and practicing safety in the water is crucial here on the West Coast.

The main theme of the Surfers Code in Raglan: Respect the environment, the ocean and most importantly, each other.

The infamous waves at Manu Bay attract surfers from around the world. But before you jump in the water just to say "I've surfed Manu Bay in Raglan", take time to think if you really should be surfing there.

1. Point Break Ability: Intermediate to Expert - No Beginners 2. Paddling Out: Paddle wide of the Wave. If caught inside, stay in the white water.

3. Keep the Wave Face Clear: Keep out of the way of approaching surfer.

4. Give Way: Closest to peak has right of way. Wait your turn. Join at the end of the queue.

5. Remember to Communicate: Call It! Paddle with commitment and intent.

6. Control Your Equipment: Hold onto your equipment, it can be a danger to others.

ecemeber and January can often be a hectic time for everyone, especially if you have electrical issues to sort out around the business or home. The Chronicle sat down with local electricans, On-Time Sparkys, to see what kinds of services they offer.

We are a family business. We live locally in Raglan and my wife was born here.

Our team consists of myself as an Electrical Inspector, my son as an electrician who also had the opportunity to finish his

apprenticeship in Raglan, and also the support from our family.

We started On-time Sparkys in 2016.

However, I have been working in the electrical industry for more than 30 years.

We are a family business. We live locally in Raglan and my wife was born here.

Our team consists of myself as an Electrical Inspector, my son as an electrician who also had the opportunity to finish his apprenticeship in Raglan, and also the support from our family.

We started On-time Sparkys in 2016.

We offer a variety of services. We specialize in new and existing houses, general electrical maintenance, installing air-conditioning and heatpumps, lighting, sheds, electrical inspections and EWOF (electrical warrant of fitnesses) for caravans, tiny houses, portable cabin sleepouts. Also, we offer a special service for older ones on the pension who are located in Raglan and who are unable to change a light bulb.

ohutakawa trees on Wainui Reserve that were planted in memory of community members have recently been discovered damaged and even cut down.

Please read this message from Fred Lichtwark of Whaingaroa Harbour Care about the significance of these trees: Wainui Reserve is not just one of the most scenic reserves in NZ but a very special place that has a high degree spiritual significance to a lot of people.

A number of trees planted on the reserves are living memorials of loved ones as well as trees planted to celebrate a new life, a very special event with these scared trees being given protection by Waikato District Council.

The trees themselves, in most cases, have special significance. For example, a very special Pohutukawa had significant meaning to me and others within the Whaingaroa and Kawhia community.

Back in 1999, some seed was collected from the 1000 year plus old ancient, sacred Pohutukawa tree in Kawhia, the same tree that the Tainui waka tied up to 800 years ago.

That seed was blessed and gifted to Whaingaroa Harbour Care here in Raglan, to grow on to become beautiful specimens, and have been used to plant on many of Raglan's coastal reserves Most were used to honour our very special people, to turn in to living memorials to celebrate their lives.

When some fool rips branches off them or poisons their roots or cuts them down, the fools will never know why their luck has suddenly changed for the worse. I am a strong believer in karma good or bad.

The tree was planted in memory of my friend (Philip) Piripi Kereopa who put many years of his life in to the Wainui Reserve and being on the management committee for the reserve.

Piripi passed on his knowledge of the history of the land that his ancestors had lived on. The land which we know now as Wainui Reserve, that is now also our play ground, (Philip) Piripi Kereopa, who named the road after the pa site, Te Paeakaraoa Rd, the rod beside which, his tree was planted.

This tree has just been cut down in the last week, by a fool, I feel so very sorry for them.

Fiona McNabb, who led the WRAP affordable housing project in Raglan this year started Black Box Buildings after experimenting with the design to provide extra space for visiting friends and family.

There were 17 teams taking on the challenge each week, with a number of players coming through from the beginners Funday Sunday events held earlier in the year. Games were very competitive showing heaps of skills and tactics that have been learned along the way.

With team names like Pirates, Aka, Helen Place, The Far Canal, Under Cut, Te Mata 2, We Three, Crow Bars, Young Guns, Ragtime, Here For Beer, Des Disciples, Norrie Neighbours, Violets, Trust Us, RD and Karioi Locals, there was always going to be plenty of fun, laughter and banter throughout the five weeks of competition.

One week got rained off so we played an extra week to catch up.

Points overall were really quite close, with most of the teams having only 10 points separating them all…that is fantastic bowling.

The next session of Twilight/Business House will start on Tuesday, February 5, and run for five weeks until March 5. Keep this in mind if you would like to have a go at lawn bowls.

Our greens are open for play during the holiday period for a small fee. So if you would like to have a go contact Jack 022 156 7509 or Eileen 8258323. Roll ups are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 12.45pm. Our annual New Year’s Eve day tournament is on December 31 at 1pm.

Introducing our new team of Marine Matters advocates. Tori, Gemma, Janzelle and Mike will be out in the community this summer discussing local coastal issues and all the things we can do here in Raglan to keep our marine ecosystem healthy.

They will be teaching the public how to spot, how to report and how to protect the smallest and rarest dolphin in the world. The Maui Dolphin is critically endangered and can only be found on the West Coast of North Island so the conservation of this beautiful species is very much a local issue.

The team will also be helping out with beach cleans and community events so you will definitely be seeing their faces a lot.
