This triggered the need for extra parking at the Domain.

Acting Programme Delivery Manager Paul McPherson said the new car park is looking great and relieves pressure on car parking availability in the town.

“As well as making it easier to find a park if you’re heading to the playground or the skate park, it also provides extra spaces for those wanting to go to Raglan’s main street as it’s only about 250m away over the footbridge,” he said.

The car park was completed a couple of weeks ago so that it was ready in time for Labour Weekend, a traditionally busy weekend that signals the start of Raglan’s influx of visitors for the summer season.

Waikato District Council

The new car park on Marine Parade opposite the takeaway shop has been sealed with high quality asphalt, which provides parking for a further 27 cars.

There’s also space for 20 cars in a barked section of the car park under trees to allow for parking in the shade on hot summer days.

This section was barked so as to avoid damaging the roots of the pohutukawa trees, while allowing rainfall to pass through to the trees’ root systems.

Raglan rally driver shares the thrills of high-speed gravel action

Rally driver and former local, Dale Perry, visited the Raglan Hopsital during his time in Raglan competing in the final round of the New Zealand Rally Championship..

ormer local boy Dale Perry has gone from delivering milk in Raglan to rally competitor, and he hit the gravel roads last Saturday in the final round of the New Zealand Rally Championship.

Dale finished the rally top of his division and 21st overall after a few spins and ‘offroad excursions’.

He says it may be the last time in a long while that Raglan hosts the Hyundai NZ Raglan Rally of the Coast with towns like Waitomo keen to get in on the action.

“The top WRC rally drivers who have raced the Whaanga say it is the best in the world. It’s an iconic stage and an iconic coast.”

With 75 cars and six people in every

team the economic benefits of the race to the town are far-reaching but Dale says residents’ complaints are making it harder to organise.

The action on the gravel started at the airfield in Raglan and finished at the Raglan Club, and Dale says the club was pumping and the restaurant was still serving food at 11pm.

Despite doubts over the Raglan rally he hopes to work with the club to put on a sprint event next year.

Before he took on the Whaanga coast leg of the championship, Dale visited Raglan Rest Home and Hospital in his rally car as a favour to manager and long-time friend Maree Burley.

“The last time I was in the hospital was in 1958 when I was born. I like giving back to the generation of people who I looked up

to and sharing the sport with them because they don’t get the opportunity to go out and follow it.”

Many of the residents had question about the horsepower, pace notes and speed of the Mitsubishi Evolution 6 RS, Maree says, and were shocked at the pace the rally cars drive on the local gravel roads.

“There was a suggestion of swapping the engine with a resident’s electric wheelchair – however the thought of the possible chaos this may cause put paid to that.”

The 60-year-old started driving at 19 and owning Rally Drive NZ allows Dale to indulge in his need for speed on a daily basis.

Dale and wife Maureen, still own a bach in Raglan and they love being able to get away to enjoy his home town when they can.

ne of the problems for the Waikato Regional Council (WRC) enacting their brief with respect to invasive plant species is that we take some of them for granted. We even value them and unwittingly give them pride of place in our gardens, not realising that they are problematic. For example, some years ago the respective councils went to great lengths to eradicate boneseed from the Raglan area and yet I am told that is flowering at the moment in gardens around town.

The best advice I can give is to urge people to check out the WRC invasive weed page (https://www.waikatoregion.govt.nz/ services/regional-services/plant-and-animalpests/) which has photos of the majority of the potentially problematic species. We all need to take responsibility for the management of the plants on our own properties.

One species that does not currently feature on that site, but will no doubt in the future, is the cockspur coral tree, often referred to as a flame tree (one of a number of species to be given this title). This plant has been treasured as a feature in a handful of gardens in the Raglan area but at least one of these has spawned numerous offspring in the neighbourhood. Similar to the cockspur coral

is the hybrid, common coral tree, but this does not produce viable seeds and is normally spread by dumping garden waste.

The risks with the coral tree are clear; it spreads and once it’s established it’s almost impossible to eradicate. Just as the woolly nightshade has taken over Port Waikato, the coral tree threatens to take over Ahipara. We can learn from experiences in NSW where over half a million hours of intense labour has failed to eradicate it from coastal areas and waterways.

Another species which some people seem quite fond of is the Himalayan honeysuckle.

This pest colonises light wells, slips and other gaps, quickly replacing native pioneer species and causing invasion by other exotic species, especially vines. I note it has spread to the reserve at Whale Bay One particularly tenacious, invasive villain is climbing asparagus. The WRC has been concerned about infestations of this in

the Coromandel and Raglan areas. Recently, a long-standing Raglan resident noted a serious out break on the Kaitoke Walkway and immediately photographed it and alerted the respective councils, following up this notification with personal contact. This action was important, not just because it enables the council to deal with it, but because it gives us a model of how to respond if we come across an infestation on public land. It’s up to all of us to do our part.

Obviously, other invasive species deserve a mention, including wild ginger, pampas, gorse etc. Pampas is notable for becoming a roadside incendiary device over summer (especially when it’s been sprayed), highlighting the escalating fire risk to the coastal area. Carelessness with fire, whether burning a pile of rubbish, a campfire on the beach or kids sneaking a smoke, could spell a catastrophic end to so many people’s efforts to protect the flora and fauna.

it. It’s worth noting that if left in proximity to native bush, gorse will both nitrogenise the soil and provide an effective nursery for the regeneration and eventual dominance of the bush.

Finally, I’ve been asked numerous times in the last few weeks, which do I think is the worst of the worst. No contest in my view – it’s privet. It’s terrible for the environment and it’s terrible for all the people experiencing the misery of sensitivity to its allergens. Let’s get rid of it now.

Margaret Jefferies will talk about her work with Project Lyttleton and how building sustainable communities can impact in surprising ways such as the Lyttelton Harbour TimeBank acting as an emergency management partner during the earthquakes.

Anna’s passionate about community and she will focus on relationship building and networking to increase TimeBank’s reach in Raglan. “I’m looking for opportunities for Timebank to spread out and make a bigger impact in Raglan.”

Currently, Whāingaroa Environment Centre, Raglan Naturally and Raglan Community House are on the TimeBank books and Anna believes there is real opportunity for other organisations to jump on board. The giving and receiving of skills, time and resources

can help organisations and they too have something to offer the community of timebankers, Anna says. “TimeBank is all about reciprocity and I’m hoping to connect with organisations we can work with.”

TimeBank’s philosophy is simple - everyone’s time is considered equal and every hour earns a credit that can be used at any time to buy services from other members. Everybody has something to offer, she says, and even a dreaded job for many such as ironing could be the super power that someone else can happily offer.

Connecting the community in ways they wouldn’t ordinarily get to interact is a big part of what TimeBank can offer.

“The number of new people to Raglan who have created friendships through TimeBank is invaluable,” she says.

With this in mind, Anna hopes to move the organisation towards providing companionship for the more isolated members of the community.

children’s verse and an unusually athletic bovine, after being named last week as Anexa’s joint vet nurse of the year in a Facebook competition celebrating Veterinary Nurse Awareness Week.

Shannon went head-to-head with Morrinsville vet nurse Jan Potter in the online vote – and lost out by a whisker.

Both vet nurses got more than 1900 votes, the North Islandwide veterinary practice told the Chronicle, with Jan clawing ahead to take out the poll by just one percent.

But it was all so close Anexa decided the pair should share the annual accolade. “You are both winners in our eyes,” Anexa posted on Facebook.

Raglan Vet Clinic head nurse Donna Rickard – who’s worked locally now for 28 years – was next highest poller in the contest.

Donna’s won a similar award in the past and says it’s an “excellent” way to acknowledge the hard work and dedication that goes into vet nursing.

She says this year’s “unbelievably close” contest was a great accolade for her young colleague, who coincidentally takes maternity leave next month.

Shannon, who was praised by Anexa for both her compassion and a “can-do” attitude, was presented last week with a celebratory potplant, choccies and card. Her name also goes on a plaque at head office, Anexa Vets Morrinsville.

She admits to loving all furry things and reckons her own

rescue cat Ringo – because he had ringworm as a kitten – has been like a child and is going to have to adapt to her new baby in a few months.

Shannon says of her job, which includes relief work in other Anexa clinics like Morrinsville and Te Aroha: “I like seeing animals go home well, I like making a difference.”

The former Raglan Area School and Hamilton Girls’ High student qualified as a vet nurse about five years ago after completing first a certificate then a diploma in animal care through Wintec.

Her work experience while studying has included a stint as a stable hand at Curraghmore stud farm in Te Awamutu, with another year at Hamilton Veterinary Services in Te Rapa.

But the Raglan clinic downtown where she’s worked part-time for two years now has been the best nursing experience, Shannon says.

“And they have not been able to get rid of me,” she laughs.

As for a quirky vet nurse moment, well, that would have to be when the clinic recently acquired a bird they called Bob. “A week later we found that Bob was a Bobbit,” says Shannon.

“She had laid an egg!”

The arts weekend will move from Auckland Anniversary weekend to Easter weekend in 2019 and former London-based public relations consultant Nicky Brzeska hopes to add her PR, brand management skills and fresh ideas to the popular art trail.

“I want to build on the amazing work established in previous years by arts centre manager Jacqueline and her team,” she says.

The format will remain the same – a preview exhibition in the lead up to the weekend at the Old School and open studios during the weekend.

Coming from global PR company Edelman to a creative role right in the heart of her community is perfect for Nicky, who is also starting a flower farm in Te Mata on a large lifestyle block with her husband John and young sons Jack and Finn.

“We’ve come from a one-bedroom flat in London to five-acres. It’s amazing to be able to work in a place I absolutely love, have inspiring conversations with artists and emerging talent, and promote a beautiful community I care about.”

Nicky has worked on some amazing jobs in her 19-years in PR including managing a citywide treasure hunt, running a ‘5 cities in 5 days’ music festival and working with the Tate Modern. She has also helped to

establish emerging artists in London, and delivered brand propositions for start-ups as well global companies like Facebook, Samsung and Disney.

She is looking forward to working with Raglan artists and using her PR skills to promote the weekend.

“I can see a lot of potential to refresh the look across all platforms we use, including the new website that was launched this year.

In time, we can look to make content more interactive and engaging, with some more video and behind the scenes stories of artists at work.”

Nicky is organising an ‘Artists’ Huddle’ for Thursday 25 October at 6.30pm at the Old School for local artists, creatives and any interested folk in town to give feedback on the Raglan Arts Weekend events so far.

“Our creative artists are the fabric of our community – I want to make sure everyone who wants to has a say in the event,” she says.

A “Get in Quick!” discounted registration fee of $139 for 2019 RAW is on offer until 30 October. From 30 October, it will revert to $150.

Registrations will close on Friday, November 9 to allow brochures to be ready before Christmas.

abour weekend is approaching, and we couldn’t be more excited. Labour weekend means an influx of new and exciting people, and a time to show off our beautiful coastal town to the holiday makers.

olin Chung and his team of helpers are organising another midday Christmas dinner at the Raglan Town Hall, on Christmas Day. “If you are finding yourself alone, or without extended family; or for some reason you may not be able to afford Christmas dinner this year - then come on down as it’ll be like any other family Christmas dinner,

the family just happens to be the Raglan community, and the home happens to be the town hall” says Colin who extends an open invitation to anyone in our community.

Colin, Rhonda Chung & their team of helpers are once again preparing a delicious feast including turkey, ham, lamb, sushi, mussels, salmon and loads of salads and vegetables - they can, however, use extra desserts, so if anybody is making dessert for

your own dinner, make another for us and just bring it down to the Town Hall before 12 noon on Xmas day.

Santa will be on hand to make this annual occasion a day to remember with Xmas carols to be sung and also local musicians providing entertainment.

A special word of thanks to the Raglan Hospital Trust, the local Raglan Lions and the local council of churches for their

generous funding to help with staging this annual event and the many other community members who have donated their time, effort and goods toward this great event.

Outdoor bowls report: Busy times on the green

L

ots of things are happening now that our season has started. On October 6 our third Aggregate Event, the Reeves Trophy was played out in good weather.

The 21 contestants were selected into Pairs teams, with one team having three members, to challenge each other for the trophy.

It was lovely to have a number of our new members taking part in this event and they played rather impressively indeed.

With the usual banter that flows, one team (Ross Turner and John Carr) had three wins.. Second were Alan Price and Gordon Mills with Eileen Stephens and Bob Noble coming in third. Two other teams also had two wins, but their points scored were not as high as the other place-getters - close, but not quite.

Then came October 13 with the Mixed Singles taking place. Play is generally played with the same ‘gender’, but in this event both men and women played ‘mixed’ as equals. A different format of play was used; the One Life

System (more commonly known as ‘sudden death’). That means, if you lose your first game then that is it, you are out! However, we like to play bowls, so we give those who lose their first game a second chance by playing in the Plate Event. Some interesting challenges followed. Some players were very determined to beat their comrade, but not everyone can win. Making it through to the semi-final of the main event, Darryl Hawkins beat John Carr and Eileen Stephens beat Maureen Wahanga (Maws), with Eileen taking out the Mixed Singles Title. In the Plate Event, Bill Bond beat Brenda Waters and Jack Peel beat Denis Pizer, with Bill winning over Jack to become the Plate winner. Congratulations to you all.

Thursday October 25 will see us hosting our first Open Tournament with two full greens. Here’s hoping for a fine day.

Canterbury claim win but Raglan surfers take out both U16 titles at Scholastic Surfing Champs

he final day of the 2018 Scholastic Championships started off with perfect waves in the 1.0m range and offshore winds at Makorori Beach, Gisborne.

Unfortunately, onshore winds arrived in the afternoon part way through the finals and they deteriorated the conditions somewhat for the last heats of the event.

Caleb Cutmore won the Under 18 Boys Division, which added to his 8 RAGLAN Chronicle

win in the Under 16 Boys in 2017.

His gold medal almost wasn’t to be with a tough run to the finals.

“I was stoked to actually just make the final. I had a couple of close heats prior to that, but in the final I found a few waves luckily, as it was a bit messy,” said Cutmore, who is a little over a week away from heading to his second World Junior Championship.

Titles in the Under 16 Boys’ and Girls’ Divisions went to Waikato surfers Kora Cooper and Brie Bennett who joined Caleb Cutmore atop

Cooper added to his Under 14 Boys’ Division title in 2017. Cooper started the final with an eight point ride and then midway through the heat added a seven point ride for a comprehensive lead.

“I tried to stick to the lefts because my home break is Raglan and I surf my best on my backhand, so I tried to get two good ones and then paddle over to the guys on the other peak,” said Cooper.

He never let the lead go holding off Tom Robinson who was Northland’s highest placed surfer in second. Both surfers head to the World Junior Championships this month as well, so their performances are vital for their preparation.

“It is good to get a win here in New Zealand and get some confidence up before we head overseas to the worlds at the end of the month,” said Cooper.

Brie Bennett posted a 10.10 point heat total to win the Under 16 Girls’ Division. The turning point in the

final came on a nice right-hander for Bennett where she completed two big backhand turns for a six point ride.

“I got one good right-hander. I only got two waves in the final, but that was enough for the win I guess.”

Bennett defeated Georgia Wederell (Mnt) who finished in second ahead of Estella Hungerford (Chch) in third and Summer Carkeek (Auck) in fourth.

Coastguard swamped with demand

E

very year, nearly 7,000 New Zealanders – 19 a day on average – are brought home safely from our seas, lakes and rivers after an emergency. This prevents 18,000 children from losing their mum or dad, 11,000 grandparents from losing their grandchildren and 1.6 million of us from losing someone we know. And it’s all made possible

by Kiwi institution Coastguard New Zealand, a charity run by over 2,000 volunteers all dedicated to saving lives, and families, on the water – a place where things can go very wrong, very quickly.

From 15 – 28 October, Coastguard are appealing to the New Zealand public for donations to help them continue their life-saving efforts in providing professional marine and rescue services 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days of the year.

Patrick Holmes, CEO of Coastguard NZ, says: “Coastguard volunteers give over 300,000 hours of their free time every year to make sure Kiwis can enjoy New Zealand’s magnificent waterways, secure in the knowledge that should anything go wrong, someone highly organised, trained and equipped will be there to help.

“Our volunteers will spring to the assistance of anyone in trouble – from a boat not starting or helping a kayaker or surfer in difficulty, to rescuing a man overboard, responding to an emergency flare, locating a drifting vessel or attending to a medical emergency at sea.

“October is the time when Kiwis get back on the water and we

want everyone to know we’re their best mate – and not be scared to call us. At the end of the day, we don’t just save lives, we save families.”

Long-time friends and boaties Isaac Hurst and John Vander Hoeven of Nelson know this all too well. Out for four hours of fishing at their secret spot on a normal Saturday morning, they had caught their quota of fish and John was reeling in his line for the last time when a freak large swell came up under the boat and flipped it right over. Their simple fourhour trip quickly turned into a lifethreatening 11-hour ordeal.

Married father of four Isaac Hurst says, “It was the perfect storm of events. Our fishing spot is usually busy with boats but that day there wasn’t anyone else around.

We only saw two other boats, both were a long way off, one was a container ship.

“The boat wasn’t big (14-foot) and the conditions meant we both got washed off the hull a couple of times. We saw a boat with a search light come out to look for us around 5pm but it was looking in the wrong direction. We were waving and shouting but they were too far out.

Then it started getting dark and we were both getting very cold. It was another four hours before we heard the motor of another boat and saw the flash of the search light moving across the water. We started waving and shouting again and this time we thought we’d been seen, but it wasn’t until we could see it was coming towards us that we knew we’d been found.

“At that point we just flopped down, no trace of energy left and thought ‘thank goodness’. I really don’t think we had much left, we

were on the edge of being able to hold on. I got very emotional and it all hit home when the Coastguard volunteers came alongside and asked if there were any children with us. It made me realise if my grandsons had been on board how much worse it would have been.

They wouldn’t have made it, none of us probably would have made it.

John and I aren’t really cuddly men, but I’ve never hugged another man for as long as I did when I got pulled aboard that Coastguard boat.”

Wayne Harrison (pictured below), Coastguard Nelson volunteer who was part of the rescue mission, explains just how lucky Isaac and John were by having another mate, Brent, who knew where their ‘secret spot’ was.

“It took us 40 minutes to reach the area given Brent’s description and intel. We searched for a solid three hours in the rain, all six of us were soaked. We kept rotating to ensure those looking at the water didn’t get too fatigued and miss something. We were using all our skills and trying to stay positive despite things not looking great.

“Suddenly we got a return on the radar which made us all take

notice as we knew there were no rocks in that area. As we got closer, we saw them in the beam of our light, on top of the upturned hull.

“We got them on board, assessed their condition and started to warm them up with blankets. We kept talking to them both, all the way back to the mainland to make sure they were okay. It wasn’t until later, after our crew debrief, that I realised what an effect the whole night had on me. We’d made a real difference to someone’s life, and family.

“To me that night makes everything we do, all the hours and the training, worth it. That one rescue was enough to keep me wanting to do this for as long as I can.”

Isaac’s wife Mallisa Hurst will never forget the moment she got the phone call her husband and John had been found alive.

“We rushed down to where Coastguard had brought them in and found them in the ambulance.

Isaac was very emotional, it was just so good to see them. We are so appreciative of everything Coastguard did that night to find the boys and bring them back – alive.

Isaac still talks about just how incredible those volunteers were.”

YOT Club Labour Weekend Guide

abour Weekend is on the horizon and for us at The Yot Club it is the start of our much-loved Sunday sessions.

However, we have three nights of music before Sunday, starting on Thursday with a little live set from locals Green Stratos interspersed with some DJing from DJ Howard Aino.

Friday brings New Zealand’s premier Fleetwood Mac tribute band to town.

Landslide are regarded as the best tribute band around and include ex-Mocker and current Bads’ main man, Brent Adams. (presales at Eventfinda. There will be limited door sales).

Saturday has local reggae powerhouse Cornerstone Roots supported by Lost Tribe of Aotearoa. Cornerstone Roots have been one of New Zealand’s leading bands for several years and continue to evolve, while LTA are impressing all with their powerful show and evocative song writing.

The first Sunday Session is traditionally a massive day so we have tried to bring as strong a line up as possible. Summer Thieves’ front man Jake Barton will open outside (weather permitting) with an acoustic set on guitar. He will be followed by local DJs and Sunday Session stalwarts Jamin-i and Dubsonic. As always, we will go inside at 10 pm where we have, as special guest, one of New Zealand’s most revered DJs, Greg Churchill, playing from 10pm until 1am.

Entry is free until 7pm and $10 thereafter with food in the yard provided by the good people at Ulo's Kitchen.

Finally, a piece of exceptional news (well for us anyway): last week the Yot Club was granted a three-year licence with the main restrictions being music outside finished by 10pm and inside by 1am. This time last year the Yot Club had lost its licence and was only open as part of the Appeal Process.

We went to The Liquor Court and had the WDC Licensing decision overturned.

However, this was backdated and expired July this year. The new licence is until June 2021 and hopefully ends a long period of uncertainty for the Yotty.

My heartfelt thanks goes to all the many hundreds of you out there who supported us with emails which were presented to the relevant authorities. Also, a big thank you to the wider Raglan population in general as in my last two applications we have not had one person oppose us in any way. Lastly, another big thank you to all my staff over the last few years and friends and family for the support and love.
