Saturday brings The Super Suckers to town. These American country/punk legends are doing their first tour of New Zealand and they are an absolute must see.

Playing with The Super Suckers are Skinny Hobos and Raglan stoner/punk icons The Illicit Wah Wahz. This gig is also a release for The Wah Wahz debut album Speed of Dark. There are limited albums and 7-inch singles available on the night, each record being lathe cut and with individual artwork.

Sunday has the start of our regular Sunday Sessions and we start with a global superstar DJ Hell. Hell is one of the absolute originators of techno, up there with the Carl Coxes of the DJ world. It is an absolute coup to

get Hell to Raglan in one of his only three gigs in Australasia. Support from Jamin-i, Chimpster and Chris Rayner.

Anyone who came to the Labour Weekend Sunday Session will see how fantastic our new set up is and with the continued assistance from our new neighbours, Ozone and Duckas Tucka food truck, we set the bar even higher for this amazing community based event. Free til 7pm, $10 after.

Sunday Sessions goes inside from 10pm which is when DJ Hell starts.

The next Saturday sees another iconic international DJ in town. Darren Emerson emerged with the world’s premier dance act Underworld, before blazing his own trail as one of the globes top techno DJs. Door sales will be $20 an absolute bargain for an artist of this stature.

Sunday the 26th brings Bevan Keys to the Sunday Session. This is Bevans first Raglan appearance and I promise you. He. Will. Smash. It. Friday, December 1, has Wellington Ska sensations Battle Ska Gallactica in town, while we are hoping to have one of NZs top bands Rubita play on the Saturday.

Finally, December 3 brings the infamous duo Cut Snake back for a Sunday Session. These professional party boys ripped the roof off the Yotty last time. Expect nothing less.

Finally thank you so much to the hundreds and hundreds of you who showed the support and love for the Yotty with your emails/letters of support. I am very happy with how the appeal went. Decision is expected roughly a month from November 6 which is why I have not listed any gigs going forward, but here's hoping for a long and fun summer.

They were fine examples of students “pushing through that finish line”, she said.

The principal’s address on goal-setting encouraged senior students to continue to step up, take responsibility for their learning and “empty the tank” by being and doing their best.

Malcolm was delighted to add that the school might even have a 100 percent pass rate this time round for year 12s getting Level 2 NCEA qualifications – “the door that opens up all other opportunities”.

He also acknowledged the work of school-leaver and aspiring professional firefighter Julius Kite who “disappeared out of the school grounds” whenever the Raglan Volunteer Fire Service siren sounded.

Julius has gained some credits associated with his many hours of volunteer work, Malcolm explained, and plenty of kudos in the community for giving his time in this way. “It’s a huge endorsement of Julius as a person.”

Former head boy and top surfer Luke Hughes who took over Raglan Surf Co a few years ago from his late father, Craig, was the evening’s guest speaker. “Live your life, have fun with your dreams, give yourself a goal, work hard,” he advised the fresh wave of seniors.

“Success doesn’t appear out of nowhere.”

ou don’t need to go far for your Christmas shopping this Y year, head to the Raglan Spirit of Christmas Arts sale and exhibition at the Old School Arts Centre from Saturday, November 18 to Sunday, December 3.

In its third year, the exhibition caters to all tastes and budgets with a myriad of artworks for sale from $5 to $500.

Curator Susanne Prinz says the exhibition is always a great hit and is looking forward to featuring work from a variety of local artists.

“The exhibition gives local artists the opportunity to sell and showcase their work,” she says.

“And it’s a great way to do all your Christmas shopping in one place.”

Around 15 artists’ work will be on display, including work by popular jeweller Yannis Petzold from Ocean Inlays, 3D artist Doug Ford, glass artist Raewyn Fitch, clay sculptor Anita Sneddon and abstract artist Claudia Grutke, to name a few.

Maureen Soanes driftwood Christmas trees will also be on display and Susanne suggests people get in quick if they want to purchase an extra special decoration to add to their family festivities, as the trees fly out the door Susanne is also looking forward to featuring the tasty delights of raw foodie Jono Hutson and says she is lining up another local food artist to join the exhibition.

The exhibition is the main fundraiser for the Old School’s clay shed which holds regular clay play for its 50 members, as well as holding workshops for beginner adults and the popular kids clay classes held weekly during term time.

Susanne says the money raised this year will help the clay shed upgrade equipment, including the kiln.

Huia Come Home hatched by a giant chicken

Local author Jay Ruka with his new book Huia Come Home.

H

uia Come Home takes flight on Saturday, November 18 at 1.50pm with a book launch at Poihakena Marae by local author Jay Ruka.

The book had been brewing for a while and a dream by wife Erin about a giant chicken was the catalyst for Jay to capture New Zealand’s church history, from both a positive and a negative light and to look to a way forward, not just for Christianity, but for Aotearoa.

“Erin had a dream about a chicken threestorey’s high and then she heard the word huia,” he says.

And while the dream sounds comical, and Erin said she woke up and had a giggle about it, the couple realised the significance for Jay in the telling of Huia Come Home.

Jay says the chicken represents the imported dominant world-view of western thinking and the Huia, an extinct native bird, the indigenous Māori perspective.

In the first half of the book he explores the positive interactions between Māori and the first missionaries prior to the signing of the Treaty followed by the exchanges that would have farreaching negative impacts on Māori post Treaty.

“The early missionaries had a respectful relationship with Māori – they learnt the language and spent time with the people,” Jay says.

Jay says Christianity ‘s agenda changed from helping Māori navigate the wider world to one of

assimilation to the English way of life with the second wave of missionaries.

What was to follow was the degradation of Māori way of life - from the loss of language and tikanga (protocols) and ultimately, the loss of land ownership and ability to be economically viable.

“The new settler government came up with deceptive ways to legislate land off Māori and used Christianity to justify it.”

In the second half of the book, Jay attempts to align Christianity with Te Ao Māori - the indigenous Māori way of viewing the world.

He believes we can still hold a shining light to the Treaty document as a way to incorporate the Māori world-view into New Zealand’s economic and political structures.

“We’ve had 177 years of doing it wrong, doesn’t mean we can’t get it right in the future.”

Jay and Erin found themselves in Raglan 18 months ago, partly to immerse themselves in the celebrated Ataarangi te reo classes held at Poihakena Marae but soon realised that Raglan was the place to be to finally realise their dream of publishing Huia Come Home.

Jay also spent time researching his Raglan whakapapa; his great-great grandmother Raima Kahui was Ngāti Koata from Te Akau.

This week we sat down with fashion designer Mala Brakovic about her aesthetic inspirations and house renovations.

How long have you lived in your house?

One and a half years.

What have you done to it since buying it?

Pretty much a full overhaul. New kitchen and bathroom, floors, paint, fencing and gardens.

What is your favourite room of the house?

The bathroom and the sunroom.

With the bathroom did you have a look in mind or did it just evolve?

Our house is tiny so we sort of had to work with what we had. I always wanted

a pink bathroom and we found an old crimson marbled acrylic bench with a scalloped sink and also an old pink iron bath so we kind of worked around those.

We got our plants from Jasmine at Sill Life in Raglan and our mirror from Rivet, in Raglan also.

What is your general aesthetic with home decor?

I’m into mid century design, more '60s than '50s, which ours is definitely not. more '70s hardy board bach! But most of our furniture and homeware is from that era.

What is the the best feature of the bathroom?

Probably the pink bath although I really love the green mirror.

Raglan Naturally gets youth questioning the future R aglan Naturally is getting the community involved and it’s all starting with the youth.

Last term, a project running at Te Mata and Waitetuna Schools led by Raglan Naturally community engagement advisor Deb King has got the students pondering what Raglan means to them.

Deb says working with the Year 8 and 9 students helps introduce Raglan Naturally to as many people in the school community as possible.

“These young people have a vested interest in their town now and hopefully for many more years to come.”

The senior students conducted various studies around transport, environment, wellbeing and infrastructure to gain an understanding of the big questions around Raglan’s future.

“They were very insightful and passionate about creating a sustainable future for their town and they took a good look at the diversity of their community, including looking at their history and to their aspirations of the future.”

Their big concerns were supermarkets, local shopping, number of houses being built and keeping the township small and some of their solutions included upcycling the oneway bridge for walkers, skateboarders and bikes and to build a two-lane bridge for 3-4 wheeled vehicles.

“These kids are the ones who will solve the big issues in the future.”

A quick lesson on democracy was also on the cards, Deb says, with the students wanting to know about local government and how it works.

They also looked at successful alternative enterprises in the local community, such as Xtreme Zero Waste that started out as a big idea.

“I was blown away at the diversity of each school, at the beginning it was challenging to get young people to understand an intangible idea such as Raglan Naturally until they realised they could have a say in their future.

We are lucky to have so many young people who want to stay in the area to help shape things.”

The project isn’t over yet and Deb hopes to take Raglan Naturally to the other schools in the area and hold a workshop at the beginning of the year with leaders from each school about what Raglan Naturally means to them.

As well as thinking about future solutions to issues that will impact on them, the students will get the opportunity to get creative for a Raglan Naturally logo competition The winners will work alongside a graphic artist to create a logo for future use by the Raglan Naturally.
