The recent Council decision to no longer fund access to the Hamilton Public Libraries by WDC ratepayers, a service enjoyed by many in the district who find the WDC library collections inadequate for their purposes; as a WDC rate payer for over thirty years who, through my rates, has supported Council Sports facilities and parks that I have never used, and now support infrastructure for visitors/tourists to Raglan which I do not use, the access to Hamilton Libraries was one of the real benefits to me of being a WDC rate payer.

Surely the Council can find the money in the budget to continue this service, which is I suspect, is probably used mostly by women ratepayers.

Thanks for the chance to voice my spleen.

Raglan CrossFit teen toughs it out for second place in the NZ NationalsClassic

aglan teen Tawhiri KomeneSalvation powered his way into the New Zealand CrossFit competition circuit with a second placing at the recent New Zealand Nationals.

The 15-year-old Raglan Area School student was virtually brought up on CrossFit; his parents Rob Salvation and Jula Komene run LightWeight Fitness in the rugby club’s old shearing shed.

The youngest competitor at the July nationals held at Avantidrome in Cambridge, Tawhiri’s second placing in the scaled male division put him up against men of all ages, some more than twice his age.

A young man of few words, Tawhiri’s CrossFit achievement speaks volumes and he credits his parents for supporting him with his training.

It was only four months out from the competition when he discovered Rob and Jula had entered him in the nationals. It was a surprise, he says, but the quietly determined athlete rose to the challenge.

Training has been part of his daily life for many years so it wasn’t difficult for Tawhiri to rachet up another gear, hitting the gym twice daily during the week and up to three or four trainings in the weekends.

“He’s made heaps of sacrifices,” Rob says. “He didn’t really get to hang out with

The competition incorporates elements of high-intensity interval training, Olympic weightlifting, powerlifting, gymnastics, running, swimming, strongman and other exercises to test the endurance, strength and stamina of the contestants.

As well as his CrossFit training regime, Tawhiri’s also had the usual schoolwork, work experience with Raglan Excavations and rugby training to keep up with.

He also recently qualified in the top 200 14-15 age group out of 1400 other young CrossFit hopefuls from around the world at the CrossFit Games 2018 in the USA. Competing in the first stage, Tawhiri completed an online five-week, fiveworkout competition. Aiming to beat his 34th placing next year, he hopes to make it into the top 20 who go on to compete in the finals held in the States every year.

Raglan Housing Survey – a good response so far

S

urvey forms have been flowing into the collection boxes with the WRAP team needing to replace already full boxes at the Library and the Raglan Community House last week only a few days after the survey was circulated.

Lisa Thomson our ward counsellor and member of the WRAP steering group hosted a WRAP stall at the Raglan Community Market on Sunday so market goers could have a chance to chat about the housing survey and housing issues in general.

Cr Thomson said that the response was very positive with people keen to see affordable housing as a top priority for a community solution. It was a great opportunity for those attending to have a chance to korero about the survey and

what the objectives for the research are.

WRAP have received a bit of feedback that for some people supplying name and full address details on the survey has made them feel uncomfortable about completing it. In response the WRAP steering group have decided to remove the name field and alter the address field to street name and area code fields then reproduce the forms so that anyone who hasn’t completed the survey yet can use an updated version.

Entering a street name only will identify the survey as coming from the Raglan ward area which will make the data more robust than it would be without any identifying details.

Existing forms can still be used by leaving the name field blank and only entering street name in the address field. New forms will be printed in next week’s Chronicle and made available along with an online version via the Raglan Notice Board Facebook page.

WRAP

Forms already completed with those details will have name and street number details stripped out by the data entry team and not entered into the database. All original forms will be destroyed once the survey data is entered.

For those who have completed the form and provided name and address details, be reassured that your forms are secure. Full drop-off boxes have been collected, sealed and are stored in a locked space at the Raglan Community House until the close of the survey.

here’s no business like snow business if you want quality time on the slopes, reckons a keen young Raglan boarder who’s paired up with a mate to operate a Kombi coffee cart at the base of Turoa skifield this winter.

The local teen living the dream is Flynn Bellerby, who’s grown up in Te Uku but completed much of his secondary education at Ruapehu College while also involved in “quite intense” snowboard training.

He and former down-country schoolmate Dylan Story – another madkeen snowboarder – take turns manning Kombi Ohakune, as their business is called, so both also get regular time on the slopes.

But on the days there’s 15 centimetres of fresh snowfall, for instance, they’ll shut up shop at noon to both go snowboarding, then head back down the mountain about 3pm to serve those in need of their next caffeine hit, Pictured above: Dylan and Flynn sitting outside their Kombi coffee cart.

The enterprise is not just about one or two Generation Z teenagers experimenting with the work-life balance. Their driving force is more about doing “as much snowboarding as possible,” Flynn says.

The pair came up with the plan last summer while living and working around Raglan, serving and roasting coffee – Flynn, 19, at the Te Uku Roast Office and Dylan, 18, downtown at Indi cafe’s Outsides counter.

The idea was to revamp Dylan’s dad’s Ohakune business from four years back.

He’d moved on, leaving his van and coffee machine in storage, Flynn explains. He gave the boys a few pointers, they applied to the local council for consent and Kombi Ohakune was re-born.

The pair have chosen a different blend of beans from the Havana used of old and are also offering a range of healthy juices at what is described on their Facebook page as a “new and improved location” in downtown Ohakune, opposite TCB Ski Board & Bike.

The “retro-like” split-screen Kombi is parked under a canopy made from four big beams and a clearlite roof. They serve customers from a counter in front of the Kombi’s double-opening side doors.

Business has been going “really well” for a couple of months now, Flynn says, and the pair can see themselves there for quite a few more seasons.

Part of Wainui Road to be closed for storm water upgrades

A

portion of Raglan’s Wainui Road will be closed from Monday 20 August so that Waikato District Council can upgrade the storm water system.

The existing system is inadequate and causes ponding and runoff issues across a number of private properties.

The work includes new pipework under Wainui Road, and improved drainage and swales. It will improve the capacity of the storm water system, and will reduce the severity and frequency of the ponding and runoff experienced.

“This will involve deep excavation works and, as a result, we will need to close Wainui Road between Stewart Street and Bankart Street to vehicles”, says Service Delivery General Manager, Ian Cathcart.

Vehicle traffic will be diverted via Stewart Street, Gilmour Street, Bow Street and Bankart Street.

Z Schools Surf Champs hosted by RAS Surfing Academy were held last week at Manu Bay. For the first time Raglan Area School won the competition with their talented Year 9 and 10 crew.

The academy students are unable to compete in the competition because they are responsible for running the event that involves 28 schools.

The students organisers were stoked with the surfing conditions and outcome of the event. They thank all the schools and competitors who got involved.

Rugby The Waikato Central Junior Rugby Board organizes and administrates all junior rugby in the wider Hamilton area.

We have over 3500 players playing all grades from 6th grade through to 13th grade. From these we provide opportunities for players to represent club and school areas in 13 different representative teams.

The first opportunity to play rep rugby is at under 45kg level. Four teams representing all Hamilton clubs play in the Bowers Cup Tournament which is a Morrinsville Sub Union tournament featuring teams from across the Waikato Wide competitions.

From the Hamilton teams we select 2 teams to represent Hamilton in the Under 45kg Invitational Tournament which is a Thames Valley Rugby Union tournament featuring Bay of Plenty, Thames Valley, King Country, Te Awamutu and our 2 Hamilton teams.

The Gwynne Shield Tournament is for players under 56kg. It has been contested every year since 1921. Across our Hamilton

and surrounding schools players are selected based on schools they attend. We enter 5 teams into the Gwynne Shield tournament which has 10 teams representing the Sub Unions across the Waikato.

For our bigger players we provide the McKenzie Cup Tournament which is a 4 team tournament featuring 2 x Hamilton teams and 2 x Country teams representing the Sub Unions. This is for players up to 75kg with 5 per team allowed over that weight.

From all these levels of rep rugby there are pathways to higher honours. The Waikato Rugby Union selects a team to represent Waikato at the prestigious Northern Roller Mills Tournament. This is a tournament for players under 57kg, featuring 10 teams from the central North Island, including Auckland, Nth Harbour, Northland, Counties, BoP, Thames Valley, King Country, Taranaki and Waikato. It has been played for since 1925.

The Karioi Kiwis are a lovely and committed team that mainly consists of year 5’s. They also have a couple year 6’s and one year 7 girl. They are playing the year 7&8 competition due to the ability to aim higher and the strive to be better.

They are a team built on the value of fellowship and love. This is what the coach of the Karioi Kiwis (Michelle Kanellis) said when she was asked ‘As coach of the Karioi Kiwis what has been your goal this season?’

A: Teamwork, unity and love were the major focuses of this season for the Kiwis. With teamwork players were split up into separate mini teams; mid court, attack and defence - the girls drills and skills were built around that.

The girls are given the chance to work in each sub team and to own their opposition player, so that they don't win the team but win the player. With unity, the girls were coached to call ‘here’ instead of calling to the player.

and not to the player. With love, if someone got hurt on the court it was every players responsibility to stop what they were doing and to help the player that was injured. Every player has the chance to talk and to state their opinion. We are a democratic team; in fact that is how we are going to choose the most valuable and improved players at the end of the season coupled with all the parents.

We also asked Michelle ‘What is the highlight of the season?’

A: Seeing each player grow into their positions. Some players may not have chosen to play the position they play on game day, but that’s where I believe they are most suited and talented. And from this mindset each player has grown in that position and as a team the game flows and is wonderful to watch! That’s why I believe we are currently on a winning streak as each player owns their space and the whole team flows.

Glenn wins big at Golf Club’s Casino Night

hen Glenn Rangitonga sauntered up to the poker table at the Raglan Golf Club he had no inclination he would leave a multi-millionaire.

he sun shone, the players came from near and far, and the Raglan locals held their own at last weekend’s outdoor bowls tournament hosted by Raglan.

“It was a really fun night - well run with the croupiers, roulette wheel, blackjack tables and of course the poker tables,” he said.

“I can’t wait to try my luck when I go to Sky City.”

After the casino closed, one of the night’s major sponsors, Julie Hanna from Ray White Real Estate, put her fantastic auctioneering skills to use.

Wonderful items had been donated by Raglan Wines and Spirits, Raglan Harbour View Hotel, Richard Thompson (PGG Wrightson Real Estate), Sharon and Steve Meddings, Raglan Surf Emporium, Gordon Thomas Hairdressing, Raglan Engineering, Angela Massey (Nutrimetics), Skoot and Fire Services Limited.

Julie was on fire, gathering bids left, right and centre, while she had the crowd fully engaged enjoying her brilliant humour.

The evening gave a huge boost to the golf club’s midwinter fund-raising efforts as they continue to strive to provide a worthwhile facility for Raglan.

“It was a great night and we owe so much to our sponsors, particularly our major sponsors Ray White and Rangitahi,” said club president Peter Aim.

The talented golfer arrived at the club for a recent Casino Night with little or no knowledge of how to play Texas Hold’Em. Nevertheless, he decided to have a crack and turned his modest handful of chips into a massive $11-plus million when he swooped on the final deal and blew his opponents away.

Glenn couldn’t believe his luck.

“I’ve played a bit of poker but Texas Hold’Em was new to me, but luck was obviously on my side,” he laughed.

The $11-odd million was “funny“ money handed out to the 60 players at the start of the evening by the professional croupiers who ran the night for the golf club.

But the big win gave Glenn some “real” rewards as he claimed the evening’s major prize of two night’s accommodation for two at Sky City Auckland plus a $50 poker stake.

Eddy was in commanding form, playing lead as he sent down a barrage of brilliant draw bowls.

Pizer has been in the winning team for each of the club’s four winter tournaments - May , June, July and now August, a special achievement.

The Raglan team-mates ended the day unbeaten in the Raglan Four Square-sponsored event with four wins to claim the day’s honours on points differential over the unbeaten Te Awamutu team of Apeldoorn,

Background music, a Raglanstyle fish ‘n’ chips lunch, an aftermatch drink and keen play on the greens added to great camaraderie.

When the chips were down, it came down to the skill and grit of Raglan triple Denis Pizer

Judson and Loomb.

Third was another unbeaten Raglan combination of Ross Turner, Eileen and Blue Stephens, with Te Kuiti fourth.

The wonderful weather gave a timely reminder of the upcoming season opening on September 15 and an Open Day at the club on September 16 at 1pm.

Keep the Open Day in mind. It is part of the club’s intention to get more people involved in the fun and competition of bowls.

T

he other morning I got a call from one of closest friends.

It was Wednesday.

We hadn't spoken to each other since the previous Friday.

Her first words were 'Just checking in. You've been quiet. Everything ok?'.

She knows that I've a history of depression.

She was there the day I broke up with alcohol and went into detox.

Our bond is a deep one.

She's a busy woman and yet she stopped to call me. Not message me. Not fb me.

She actually called me...you know, like we used to before screens and smart phones disconnected us from each other?

When I go quiet, she's the first to connect with me. And I've been quiet only because work has been busy and I've not had the space or energy to connect with her. I’m grateful that I’m no longer depressed.

It was a short and tender conversation, but it made my day.

I felt loved.

We had a laugh.

She said goodbye.

I prepped for my first client...a little late, but that's ok.

Why bring this up?

May this remind us all to check in on each other.

When we're fiercely independent we forget. We also forget that our strong friends can have bad days too. We forget that not everyone feels comfortable asking for support. We forget that a simple call can make someone's day.

Remember to check in on your friends, is what I'm saying.

BE PART OF THE SOLUTION HOW TO SUPPORT A FRIEND WHO IS DEALING WITH DEPRESSION You’re already a great friend simply by being there. But even when you have really good intentions, it can be hard to know exactly what to do to help. Here are a few tips, but remember to look after yourself too.

1. Become informed Not totally sure what depression is or what it means for your friend? A really great first step in helping your friend is to find out more about depression - which will help you better understand what they’re going through. www.depression.org.nz is a good first step.

2. Be there to listen If your friend feels like talking, ask them how they’re going. Try asking questions like, “What can I do to help?” and “What do you find helpful?” When you want to bring up a sensitive issue with a friend, try to choose a time and place when you’re both comfortable and relaxed. It’s a good idea to avoid talking to them about it if they’re upset.

3. Take their feelings seriously If someone is suffering from symptoms of depression, it isn’t possible for them just to ‘snap out of it’, ‘cheer up’ or ‘forget about it’. When you listen to them and validate their feelings by saying things like ‘That must be really hard’ or ‘I’m here when you want to talk’, they’ll know you’re taking their feelings seriously.

4. Let them know about support services If your friend has already seen a GP or mental health professional, that’s awesome.

You could let them know there are also online and email counselling services.

5. Respond to emergencies If you think your friend may be in danger or at risk of hurting themselves or someone else, seek help immediately. Call 111 to reach emergency services and also tell someone you trust.

6. Take care of yourself It can be incredibly frustrating, exhausting and upsetting to deal with someone who is experiencing depression. You can be there to support your friend only if you look after yourself first. Remember to do the following to make sure your own wellbeing is looked after.

Monitor your mood. You might be really worried about a friend with depression, but it's important that you also monitor your own mood and stress levels.

Don't give up the things you enjoy.

Always make sure you've got the time to do your favourite things.

Set boundaries. You aren’t going to be able to be there for your friend all of the time.

Set some limits around what you’re willing and not willing to do. For example, you might decide not to take any phone calls in the middle of the night or not to miss social events just because your friend isn’t up to going.

Ask for support. It’s important that you’re getting your own emotional support. Talk to people you trust about how you’re feeling.

When you don't hear from a friend, call or pop round to see them. Sometimes they're just busy.

Other times they might feel overwhelmed and exhausted...too tired to ask for help. The power of connection is a healing force.

Go do it...connect with your friend today, especially the one who's been quiet.

And if you're on the receiving end, answer the call. Don't let it go to voicemail. That call might just make your day.

Tackling the Issues

An occasional opinion column with long term Raglan resident Ross Henderson

Regional Council tells locals that use of old moorings is now illegal - enforcement action to follow

L

ocals are smarting after the Waikato Regional Council placed notices on moorings in picturesque Lorenzen Bay informing locals that the moorings are not “in line with our (Regional Council’s) Waikato Coastal Plan”, do not have resource consent and are located outside the Raglan “ZMA” (Zoned Mooring Area).

Enforcement action is to follow if this was not remedied before 1 July.

The area in question is used for sailboats up to a maximum of about 6 meters. Many of the boats are part of the Raglan Sailing Club, an entirely voluntary group supporting Raglan kids to learn to sail and learn boating safety. The area is entirely tidal and all the yachts are, like the Lorenzen Bay boat ramp, high and dry for half the tide cycle.

The Regional Council action raises a number of issues.

For a start, the moorings are mostly historic and preceded the Waikato Coastal Plan, in some cases by decades, and as such were existing uses. As the use of them was not unlawful until the Council made up the bylaw, the offending has, in effect, been created by the council, not by local yachties.

Secondly, many of the moorings were reputed to have been located and installed by a previous harbour master who also allocated the use of them to locals. It is perfectly understandable they believe that they are able to use them.

Thirdly, there is no viable alternative. The only so called ZMA is located adjacent to the wharf in an exposed area of the

harbour which experiences strong tidal currents making it a difficult proposition and necessitating the launching of a second boat from the already hopelessly congested wharf boat ramp and parking a car and boat trailer where there is no parking available.

Furthermore this ZMA is the only one in in the harbour and only allows for a maximum of 30 moorings. This compares with Kawhia Harbour which has, under the same Coastal Plan, four ZMAs providing for a maximum of 115 moorings. Under the existing arrangement locals with their yachts on the traditional moorings at Lorenzen Bay are able too walk or safely swim to their boats placing no pressure at all on the grossly inadequate infrastructure in the wharf area.

Fourthly, the long-standing voluntary group and charitable trust, the Raglan Sailing Club, will no longer be viable. It simply is not safe to run it from the wharf area.

The lovingly restored, and historic clinker-built kauri cutter that is a mainstay of the club will be lost to the bay and to the community and young Raglan people will no longer have the opportunity to learn to sail under the expert voluntary tuition.

This is especially frustrating to club volunteers who have applied repeatedly to council for a grant for safety equipment but have never received any support from council at all. Like many of the yachties who, being on the pension, cannot afford expensive resource management applications for the Regional Council to send off to some consultant for consideration, the Sailing Club simply doesn’t have the resources to pay for mooring fees or resource consent applications. This compares with some centres where the councils have provided clubs with a venue and infrastructure.

Salt in the wound for Raglan locals is the fact that the Regional Council has, in the Coastal Plan Bylaw, provided for exceptions for existing “public” moorings in other areas, in particular Taupo, but not for Raglan. This adds to the commonly expressed ratepayer impression that Regional Council’s interest, like the rates, is disproportionately focused on Taupo.

Underpinning all this is the need to manage the changing face of Raglan and the decisions that go with this.

Do we nurture, or at least preserve, the old Raglan lifestyle possible in picturesque enclaves like Lorenzen Bay with its pretty coloured boats and sails and friendly chatty neighbours with their laughing kids and grandkids paddling and swimming and sailing?

Or do we wipe the canvas clean with the heavy handed application of ‘one size fits all’ bylaws and clear the way for absentee landlords and Air B&B-dominated social wastelands.

This issue sits alongside other problems such as Raglan’s current housing crisis as part of the wider issue of how to safeguard this community. Healthy communities may be built on the engagement and commitment of good people, but they are also reliant on the wise application of public policy.

A community is like a forest.

As long as we look after it, it will keep providing the oxygen we need to support lifestyles, but all it takes is an ill-advised onslaught with a chainsaw (or an ill-fitting by-law) and it’s lost for generations.

verytime I watch an old movie I’m reminded of how far we’ve come in ridding the world of racism, sexism and other forms of prejudice. This is not to say that things are perfect but times have certainly changed, in fact I’d go so far as to say the tables have turned in a lot of ways. Watch what happens when someone utters a racist comment in public, there’s public outcry, a social media frenzy and eventually the racist person is forced to make a public apology – or maybe go into hiding.

And heaven forbid you should say something wrong on twitter. People have literally lost their job because outraged twitter mobs took offense after failing to spot the nuance in a 140 character tweet.

People seem to be increasingly uncomfortable with this and I’ve started

running this thought experiment: Imagine someone who can’t speak English being shown video of old-time racists discussing the short comings of Maori. Then imagine them being shown video footage of a different group of people discussing the short comings of racists. Would they be able to tell the difference?

I come from the anti-racist side of the fence and I know the satisfaction of seeing a prejudiced individual getting slammed, but I’m wondering what that feeling of satisfaction says about me? The dynamic of racism is to create an ‘out-group’ and then transfer our negative feelings on to that group – but isn’t that what I’m doing when I look down on racist people? Apart from having a more complex justification for my actions, is there any difference?

There’s no doubt that prejudice has been (and still is) at the root of a lot of injustice and that we need to get rid of it. But when did we go from stamping it out to directing hatred at anyone who shows the slightest hint of prejduice? Leftwing blogger Martyn

Bradbury refers to “micro aggression policing” when there are twitter pile-ons because some unfortunate individual didn’t get their wording quite right. I give thanks daily that I never got a twitter account.

Our behavior is creating a lot of resentment in other parts of the community how does a working class person feel when educated middle class people sneer at them because they aren’t pure enough in terms of race, sexism or environmental issues. Hilary Clinton’s “basket of deplorables” comment epitomises this attitude and while it sort of played welI to her voters it probably did more to help boost Donald Trump’s vote.

We also saw this with the protest against Trump when he arrived in England with organisers creating a huge orange blowup baby-Trump. It made the point about Trump’s behavior brilliantly, it was funny, it was guaranteed to get media attention… and it will have boosted his support back home immensely.

Trump has tapped into the resentment felt by working class people to get into

power, it surely isn’t pretty and it should concern us but we also need to know that every time we exhibit our own peculiar type of prejudice we’re adding to the problem not reducing it. We have to find things in common with people on the other side of the fence, whatever the issue, because we only need to look at the history of the 20th century to see what happens when people start fighting hatred with hatred.

Crazy Hair Day

I

f you saw a lot of fantastic hair styles on Wednesday 8 August that is because children from RAS were supporting our Crazy Hair Day in conjunction with a nationwide campaign by the charity KidsCan.

We were blown away by the amount of support from our young people, particularly the junior classes. There were prizes for best crazy hair at each level of the school including the teachers. We also ran a sausage sizzle to raise extra funds. Thank you to all who supported our Crazy Hair Day and look forward to sending a cheque to this charity.
