daunting tasks for elderly people even with the support of friends and family.

Plastic Free July: The Senior Citizens had an interesting talk by Vicky who is passionate about making Raglan plastic bag free.

She told us how local ladies have made hundreds of cloth bags using donated fabric and distributed them throughout the town. If anyone would like to help there are lots of sewing sessions throughout July to be held at the Town Hall Supper Room. Dates are available from Raglan House and the library.

Remember those who cannot remember: June 21 is shortest day and we remember those with memory loss. While there appears to be no known cure for dementia there is a lot we can do to help improve our memory and perhaps prevent the deterioration of our brain cells and connections.

Howard Vickridge from Dementia Waikato will explain the different types of dementia and what help is available for families coping with memory loss at a meeting at the Stewart Street Hall on Wednesday, July 5, at 10am.

aglan nominees for the 27th annual Green Ribbon Awards attended the awards ceremony held at Parliament last Thursday, announcing this year’s winners.

This year’s awards saw three Raglan community groups named as finalists – Xtreme Zero Waste and Whaingaroa Harbour Care as well as Para Kore, a national zero waste education organisation that was initiated by Xtreme Zero Waste.

Environment minister Nick Smith and conservation minister Maggie Barry announced the 2017 Green Ribbon Awards finalists earlier in the month. While the Raglan nominees were not winners their nominations are a huge achievement recognising their efforts as some of the country’s exceptional environmental and conservation initiatives.

“These national awards, now in their 27th year, play an important role in celebrating and raising the profile of outstanding contributions by individuals, communities and organisations to protect and manage New Zealand’s environment,” Smith said.

“The standard of nominations this year was particularly high and it’s great to see so many people and organisations stepping up to care for our environment. We received close to 150 nominations, from all corners of the country.”

Barry said the finalists are doing exceptional work to conserve New

Zealand’s unique environment and species for generations to come.

“What particularly stands out from the stories of our finalists this year is the leadership they have shown to deliver significant, tangible outcomes for the environment and conservation,” Barry said.

“Many of the finalists have achieved remarkable results through community involvement and collaboration with others.

They are examples of New Zealanders working together for the common good.”

Xtreme Zero Waste was named a finalist due to their 17 year history providing a zero waste to landfill programme for the Raglan Community.

They have achieved over 75% diversion of waste from landfill and are about to bring in a further service, kerbside collection of food waste, which might see over 85% diversion from landfill.

The food waste collection and composting is a new project for Raglan.

The project is being funded by the Ministry of Environment Waste Minimisation Fund which was announced this week in Raglan by the associate minister for the environment, Scott Simpson. Food waste diversion is important for many reasons including New Zealand’s target of reduction in emissions currently being discussed in Paris.

"Para Kore is Zero Waste education programme that is now working across the Māori community, with over 180

marae, kura, kohanga reo and community organisations.

"With the additional funding, we are bringing the Para Kore kaupapa to Wellington, Hawke's Bay, Gisborne, East Coast and Rotorua.

"For us it is about kaitiakitanga, it's about looking after Papatūānuku and Ranginui" says Jacqui Forbes, Kaihautū Matua for Para Kore.

Whaingaroa Harbour Care was also named a finalist in the Green Ribbon Awards due to their 23 year history.

“Back in 1995, it took 18 hours to catch a single fish, whitebait catches were about half a cup and when it rained, the Whaingaroa Harbour turned brown with sediment for weeks at a time.

"Sediment runoff from farmland was smothering the seabed and your gumboots would stick in the mud.”

“Two decades later and it’s a different story. There’s more than 425km of riparian fencing and planting, as our team of five staff have worked with over 60 landowners throughout the catchment and planted 1.6 million trees.

"Seagrass beds are expanding and you can easily catch three snapper an hour.

It’s truly amazing what a few people can achieve working alongside willing farmers,” Fiona said.

he Bryant Retreat For Women last weekend threw open its doors to publicly thank the Raglan community for its ongoing support of the harbourside facility – and to dispel the notion the unique service it offers is only for women from out of town.

“This misconception ... has somehow become part of popular mythology,” DV Bryant Trust chief executive officer Lindsay Cumberpatch said in welcoming more than 20 locals representing the wider community to afternoon tea last Saturday.

“The retreat is a healing home for women here in Whaingaroa too.”

The facility caters year-round for up to six women at a time from the Waikato and King Country. They stay for 11 days and each has their own room, ensuring “there is always company when you need it and solitude when you want time out”.

All come courtesy of referrals from their GPs and their stays are fully funded by the Hamilton-based trust, which was set up in 1960.

The retreat’s purpose is to nurture women needing some TLC and time out from stressful situations in overly busy lives.

“It’s not a health facility,” Lindsay

pointed out. “It’s a home, a place for our guests.”

A short DVD on the retreat’s beginnings back in 1964 – when the expansive red brick house on the corner of Cliff and James Streets was purpose-built – showed how Waikato farmer and philanthropist Daniel (Dan) Vickery Bryant had set the scene a decade before when he arranged for women suffering from stress to stay at a family bach further along Cliff St. Earlier, from the 1930s, “tired mothers” were able to stay during the winter months at the then Bryant Convalescent Home for Children – now Camp Raglan on Wainui Rd overlooking Ngarunui Beach.

But it was Dan’s son Cecil who oversaw, on behalf of the DV Bryant Trust, the building and landscaping of the current retreat which still nurtures women 53 years on.

There are always three family members included on the board of 12 trustees that runs the philanthropic organisation, which is now into its fourth generation.

Andy Bryant, a third generation family member at last Saturday’s function, fondly remembered his father Cecil getting rocks from the beach for the Bryant Retreat garden and how he used to dine once a week with the guests. Other times he’d

take them out on the harbour in a boat.

Trustee and retreat committee chair John Graham was also on hand to field questions on the running of the facility.

Retreat manager Robyn Riddle, who’s been in the job 18 months now, said it was an honour to be part of the trust’s vision in Raglan.

“Women who come and stay spend a lot of time telling us how wonderful the people here are,” she added, referring to the community that supports her and six local staff members working to keep things ticking over for their guests.

Community representatives at the afternoon tea included not only close neighbours who’ve had a long association with the retreat but also representatives from the likes of the Lions Op Shop, the Light Exercise Group, the Yoga Loft and the museum.

“We encourage guests to go out, explore and enjoy our community,” Robyn explained. There was no structured programme as such, she added, and certainly no counselling.

The retreat was all about rest and relaxation.

Council looks at another water company option W

aikato District Council is talking with Watercare Services Ltd and Waikato-Tainui about potentially forming a company to improve water and wastewater services for the district.

The informal discussions began when it became clear that neither Hamilton City nor Waipa District councils supported forming a joint asset-owning CCO to manage water as independently recommended. Waipa and Hamilton want a non-asset owning model.

Mayor Allan Sanson says talks with Watercare and Waikato-Tainui are at an early stage with other options to manage water services still “very much on the table”.

The council already works with Watercare in Pokeno and Tuakau. The Auckland Council-owned Watercare, a CCO, has treated wastewater and supplied drinking water to Waikato district ratepayers for many years.

Watercare contractors also provide specialist technical expertise to the northern part of the district. Council often struggles to find enough expert staff to keep up with growth and increasing health and environmental standards.

Mayor Allan Sanson said it might make “financial and common sense” for the three organisations to look at leveraging their existing relationships.

“We all want the same thing. We all want a healthy Waikato River and healthy waterways but in a way that’s affordable for people in our district. And we want to deliver the best water and wastewater services we can for the best possible price.”

Mr Sanson said no decisions would be made until the public was consulted and that was a way off yet.

“We’re keeping our options open but we’re strongly committed to improving the way we provide water and wastewater services, that’s for sure. In the meantime it’s business as usual.”

Raffle boosts coffers for new Increase in visitors at Old School creative space campground

he Raglan Kopua Holiday Park Board of Management reported a busy summer in its six-monthly report tabled that the Raglan Community Board meeting on Tuesday.

In the report, board chairman Colin Chung wrote that although it had been one of

he Raglan community has helped fundraise $8000 towards the new creative space at the Old School Arts Centre.

Fundraising committee member Susanne Giessen Prinz says $140,000 in grants has been secured for the project, with the community also showing its support by donating prizes and purchasing tickets in the Super Summer Bumper Raffle.

Constable Gary Ryburn drew the winning tickets on Monday.

First prize was a holiday for two for five nights on the Gold Coast, which was won by Derek Van Der Vossen.

Susanne says the community can continue to help out with fundraising efforts by supporting two upcoming events in Raglan.

Susanne is giving a talk on her trip to Antarctic at the Old School on July 7 at 7pm.

Tickets cost $15.

A Raglan Art Auction will be held at The Wharf Kitchen and Bar on July 21, including a buffet dinner, a complimentary glass of wine and live music by the Wandering Dulcets. Tickets cost $40.

Tickets for both evenings are on sale at the Old School.

The new two-storey creative space will replace the existing Clay Shed and the room used by the Lions to sort second-hand clothing for its opportunity shop, and will include an upstairs black box theatre space.

Building is hoped to start in April 2018.

the wettest and coldest starts to summer, the park was quite full and growth was up 8 per cent on last year, with January alone seeing an increase in visitors of 16 per cent.

Operating costs increased by $56,000 – “security costs doubled over last year” – but the park still managed a 25 per cent net after depreciation and bettered last year’s performance by 11 per cent.

This resulted in a working capital of $993,058 and a net worth of just under $3.8 million for the period ending January 31, 2017.

The board plans to upgrade most of the park’s cabins and motel units before next summer, as well as the toilet blocks and floors in other areas of the camp.

The rebuild and installation of the outdoor par course and the new designed pump track, to replace the BMX track, will also be completed.

Double medal tally for Raglan snowboarder

haingaroa students from Waikato schools took on the mud run at the annual Tough Girl and Guy challenge held at Ngaruawahia last week.

Over 3000 competitors took part on a

course that included swamp crossings, a spiders web net climb, crawling under barb wire, beautiful native bush trails, tunnels, hurdles, a climbing frame and not to mention, mud, mud and more mud!

C

ompeting in the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria earlier this year, Raglan snowboarder Kaa Dekker won two medals, a silver and bronze, at the Winter Games.

Kaa first joined the Special Olympics team in 2011 so is no stanger to competiton.

Kaa placed second in the Advanced Giant Slalom and third in the Advanced Super G events.

Closure of causeway and footbridge stirs memories

everley Baker remembers her dad building the first footbridge that connected the Rangitahi Peninsula with Opotoru Rd. It was so that the then 5-year-old could get to school, no matter what the tide was doing.

Before that Bev’s mother would row across the estuary when the tide was in and “for someone who couldn't swim this was very daunting”, with two children under the age of 5 seated in the boat.

“She used to tell us, don’t you dare move,” recalls Bev, now 77 and living in Mt Maunganui.

Her dad, Aubrey Butterworth, a farmer on the peninsula, built the bridge in 1944-45 from tea tree felled on their land, which he trimmed with an axe and handsaw and then carted to the beach on the back of his Morris truck nicknamed Gertie.

“I remember going to the beach in the truck with the tea tree but how on earth he managed to get the poles dug in the dirt, I don’t know,” says Bev. This week marks the end of an era with access across the pedestrian footbridge and causeway permanently closed to make way for a new two-lane bridge with footpaths to service the future development of up to 500 properties on the peninsula. In four years it is envisioned that Rangitahi will be a small bustling community – a far cry from the sleepy hideaway that it currently is.

Longtime former Rangitahi resident Neria Mataira, who moved her family of three generations to Waingaro ahead of the closure because “it would have been to o hard to live there while the bridge is being built”, says she feels a huge sense of loss with the changes ahead.

“That was the swimming place of my grandchildren, my children and us growing up. It’s sad to think we don’t know if that will happen again – certainly not in the way we knew it.”

surfing the strong current in the channel by holding on to rope tied to the bridge.

Bev says the deep swimming hole wasn’t there back in her day – it was created as the causeway was built up, by the force of the water rushing in and out of the estuary under the vehicle bridge.

The first crossing of fascines and stones was put in by the Husband family, who arrived in Raglan about 1900, so they could drive over at low tides in their buggy pulled by two white horses.

Aubrey later built the bridge across the channel, which leads to the causeway, in the year that Bev was born, 1939.

“It made the farm a bit more accessible for vehicles,” says Bev, as the only way across was by boat or walking at low tide.

“Later the access was built up further with a culvert pipe nearer the Opotoru Rd end of the causeway, enabling a few more hours to get vehicles across.”

As more people came to live on the peninsula, the causeway was added to – rocks and rubble material including concrete poles, culverts and bricks – and Frank Chibnall, who owned the farm after the Butterworths, replaced Aubrey’s bridge with a taller one with treated timber and welded steel.

The bridge Bev’s father built used to become submerged during high spring tides, she recalls “We’d be up to our knees in water walking across it. And sometimes a board would wash out and you didn’t know, and your leg would go down and get all bruised.”

Bev took her last walk across the current footbridge a couple of months ago, for a trip down memory lane.

“When I got to the other side and my legs were shaking, and I said ‘I am going to walk back across the causeway’,” she laughs.

The old bridge also always shook back in her day whenever people walked over it, or when Bev and her sister rode their bikes across it.

“We used to laugh at people who would visit and come over the bridge … it was so scary for them. We’d always stomp a bit harder behind them so it would shake a bit more.

“I always remember it as a happy time on the farm, there.”

Construction of the bridge is expected to begin this month.

We are seeking a confident, enthusiastic and capable Customer Service Person to join our team on a full time permanent basis at our Raglan Beach vet clinic.

Anexa FVC operates 14 Veterinary Clinics across the Waikato employing 130 staff. We have an experienced and dedicated team of Vets, Vet Nurses and Customer Service people based at our clinic in the beautiful Raglan Beach. Our team provide services to beef, sheep and dairy farms as well as companion animals.

The Customer Service Person is the first point of contact for our loyal clients, therefore strong communication and organisational skills are essential. You will have the ability and confidence to book in farm calls and direct Vets efficiently to ensure they arrive on farm on time and prepared, as well as making sure our companion animal owners (and their pets) receive the best possible experience.

You will undertake data entry and month end processing as well as others tasks such as end of the day cash up, managing vaccination and dental reminders, general housekeeping, and managing the inventory of stock (both purchasing stock and stock taking).

To be successful in this role, you will have a fabulous phone and front counter manner, strong general office skills as well as the ability to multitask, problem solve, and meet deadlines. There is a requirement to participate in a Saturday morning clinic roster.

It would be an advantage to have knowledge of New Zealand farming systems and ideally a background in the veterinary industry, although this is not essential. We are happy to train the right person with the right attitude, great team work skills and a high level of personal positivity.
